Interesting and informative. I set up a 125 here in Denver and went with the experts, Golden Fish in Lakewood. I was loaded down and satisfied with my collection then I noticed parasites. I went to the experts for advise and product and the next day every single fish was laying dead on the substrate. The "experts" failed to tell me to give my Africans a half a dose....I still had a colony of juvenile Tropheus and moved to the country. I brought oxygenated water and set up the tank and my juvies were literally jumping out of the water and coming down dead...I was shocked...just like that I was out of the hobby!

Because of you enthusiasm I went to Tanganyka’s. In one word? Awesome. I was sick of my Malawi’s constantly hurting and fighting. Now I changed my 190 gallon with 13 frontosa’s. 3 leleupis. 5 neolamprologus merengues is, a gold calvus. A black calvus and a wild caught beautiful white calvus. It al get along great. Relaxing swimmers. Just love my boys. Feeding them krill gold , hikari and cichlid formula. Great food. Thanks Jay. You’re the best.

Great video. I always love learning about Tanganyikan set ups. Been violating the cardinal onesy rule for years with a single Frontosa and Tropheus Moori in a 100 gallon, with some dither silver dollars. Never see any infighting.....they seem to keep the balance and are content,,,,,although I know this is not the ideal set up, especially since they are supposed to have different diets. Wow that was crazy informative. For more social shell dwellers, multies specifically, is it the volume or the footprint space that matters? I was thinking of two pairs in one those 12g bookshelves that are 35 inches long (with a sump or canister), but obviously don’t want to force it if it’s a dumb or harmful idea.

Moorii can be housed with duboisi. But definately need colonies.
Small fish - most of the lamprologus species. Julidochromis as well. Julies and steatochrimis can be kept with tropheus if shells and cover for them. Have to understand their natural niches and temperaments.
Just really can’t do different morphs of moorii. Don’t forget about frontosa.

I wouldn't recommend it in a 15 gallon. I tried it in a 16 gallon and it didn't work out very well.

Surprised to not hear anything about cyathopharynx, cyprochromis, or chalinochromis.

    • @billscorner404
      @billscorner404 Год назад

I came to the comments to say the same thing. Paracyps and Cyps are great for community tanks, and Cyathopharynx or Enantiopus sp. "Kilesa" are unbeatable if you've got the space.

What would you put in a 612 liter (158,503 gallon) tank? 170 x 60 x 60cm. Colourfull would be good.

@@Jaywil07 I'd like Frontosa, but don't really know if A: The tank is big enough. and B: What can I keep with them that they're not going to eat if I keep them long enough for the to get big? I also like Leleupi, Brichardi and Compressiseps. Also shell dwellers..... in fact I love them all.

So for instance a colony of Brichardi and a colony of shell dwellers, anything I could put in to utilise the upper reaches of the aquarium? Shell dwellers probably wouldn't be left with much room if the Brichardi's took off?

Hi there, I have a Tanganyikan community tank and would like to get some tropheus once I upgrade and add to my existing colony of fish. I've already sourced where to get Tropheus moorii moliro.
The community currently consists of a single 5 bar cichlid, some leleupi, some masked julies, a colony of shell dwellers (neolamprologus brevis) and a group of synodontis Petricola.
I'm going to be setting up a 6ft - 125gal tank with lots of large and small rocks. I would also like to create one of those high rock hides for the tropheus near the top of the tank. I know they need an algae based diet.
I'm mostly only worried about the shellies being too small with the tropheus but they hold there own against everything else and are kind of taking over haha. I did find a few tanks on some forums that had multis but those are smaller than the shell dwellers I already have.
Do you think this will work?
    Thanks.

    • @Jaywil07

I think your going to have a problem with troph unless you get quite a few of them in the tank.
      They are straight jerks lol

What about a goldfish? (Sorry 😏) I have a friend who went out with a guy who was into having fish, for about 6 months. He spent a ridiculous amount on a fish tank etc that took up a whole wall in her living room. She ended up loving that tank and fish. She missed them more than him when they broke up. I'm sure she'd love your channel (as long as she doesn't see I wrote about her!😳)

I think you should learn about other species than Tropheini species. There are Cyps, Featherfins and Sandsifters too other than these. I wouldn't keep Trops after Malawi mbuna, their body shape and behaviour are too similar.
