Man I'm loving the tank. The plants are awesome and I think the fish enjoy them. I too also love sponge filters. I think they are the best. I rely on my plants to do most of my filtering along with my sponge filters. Every tank has pothos, I even have less popular types as well as your 2 Most common. I keep luck bamboo I have one shoot that has 3 more coming up and They all are under water. I keep mini plam and pothos in my 2 big systems. I also grow wondering jew and another vine plant as well. Not sure what it is called. I have learned a ton from you all. I love it. Thank you for all you do. Thank you for helping me grow in this hobby. Started out with one betta and 3 gallon tank. Now I have 5-10gals, 6-5gals, 4- 3gals, then my 2- 30 gallon tanks. One has my blue crayfish and guppy fish. The other has my turtle Turt-Turt MaGurt which I got him on National Turtle day of this year. I have my fully planted 20 long betta sorority with platy, and few other fish. I thank lisa for that 😍 my tank is balanced and my ladies play nice. Then my 40 breeder is prized tank. I was actually sitting in front of my new custom 50g when this popped up. I've been wanting to do a tang Community for some time. There's not enough content like this. I can't tell you how excited I am 😆. Great content! And wow them orange Leleupi ! Awesome stuff 👏
Loved the tank Jeson. Planning on setting up one 30 long with somewhat similar fishes. Can you please tell me how many fishes you have got there and the water change schedule and how much water you change at once. It will be my first Tanganyika tank. So curious to know.
I think the stocking level on that tank right now is something like 6-8 Leulupi, 2 callipterus, 3 transcriptus, 4-5 falcicula, 2 paracyprichromis, and a couple BN plecos. We do about 35% water changes on that tank once a week. Good luck!
Love it. We've got almost the same stock in a 75g with some black and white Calvus also. Still chasing nitrates. 30% water changes 3 times a week and it always 30 to 40 ppm. Backed off feeding, & pulled some hard scape. Seachem 75 hob, Cascade1000 and a sponge filter. Just can't seem to lower those nitrates😒😒😒😒
I'm setting up a custom 75 gallon long aquarium. It's 5 ft long by 16 inches high by 18 inches wide. I'm planning on stocking it with Tanganyikan cichlids: 2 Altolamprologus Calvus, 4 Neolamprologus Leleupi, 2 Julidochromis Transcriptus, and 6 Neolamprologus Brichardi. And maybe three or four Dwarf Petricola. Does this sound like a good combination?
Really nice looking tank! I have a normal sized 33 gallon tank I guess (81x36x51cm), and I have 4 Similis shell-dwellers and 2 Julidochromis Transcriptus in there. I’ve had them for only a week now but there doesn’t seem to be any aggression. Do you think that I could add a pair of Neolamprologus Leleupis even though my tank is not that long. Is there any other possible tank mates that I could maybe add other than the Leleupis? Also I’m curious to know if you’ve had any problems with aggresion in this tank.
Thank you my man! Awesome tank and love to the 33 long! I still have mine sitting with sand and water in it since March due to the COVID pandemic, But recently ordered some plants from ebay to get the ball rolling!
A lot of people will say "oh! All african cichlids look so similar so I'm not a fan of em." Do they ever see their colors? Personality? Energy levels? They r just awsome!
I can't find any orange lelupi in Wisconsin at all. I have the yellow the shellies and, birchardi, all in grow out tanks. Can't wait to put them all in my 55.
Beautiful setup, I never kept African, it's great to know about them. From what I have seen l like malawi the most, please do cover all your other tanks as well, would be exciting to see others as well.
Hi Jeson - need a little suggestion how many fishes at maximum can be kept in a tank with dimensions- 36 inches long, 12 inches wide and 15 inches tall. It is somewhat 28 gallon. The fishes I am planning are Julidochromis transcriptus, leleupi and Neolamprologus brichardi. I am planning on running 2 sponge filters and a weekly water change of 20 to 30 percent.
In that size tank I would think about leaving the Brichardi out of the mix - they will over take the tank eventually. If you go with the other two, start with five each and see if you get any fry to survive (with lots of rocks it's possible). Have fun!
Prime Time Aquatics completely understand. I recently read that leleupi is a terrible fry eater. Will it work if I put Julidochromis transcriptus and brichardi? If it’s not advisable I have Another option I can go for is a 50 gallon tank- length 36 inches, width 18 inches and height 18 inches. What is your thoughts on the fishes I can put in that and how many. Thank you for helping me with your vast experience before I start - I just don’t want to end up with few dead fishes at the beginning just by getting the basics wrong.
Thanks for the tour. This is a beautiful tank ! I was interested to see that the Jungle Val does so well in the tanks pH and hardness. I also like some green in a Tanganika tank. I also appreciated the data on the other Neolamprologus species. If our home could take more tanks, I'd love to see some of those in species tanks. Thanks again, JIm
Late comment, but considering this is a 33 long, you are well stocked! Wondering if I can find maybe one more Tanganyikan cichlid into my 40 breeder community. Already have one of each: brichardi, Leleupi, Julie Marlieri, and a compressiceps. I have a feeling aggression will go down the more fish I add. Much like a Malawi tank.
Thank you for this video! I was going to comment on yesterdays video to ask if you could do a more in-depth walk through of this tank. I am transitioning my 40 breeder into a cichlid tank and this video really helps!
Really like the look of the 33 long, the fish are just amazing. The only thing I don’t like about African Cichlids is try to remember all there names, you must have a photographic memory 🤓
Hoping to get a 33 Long soon or a 40 breeder. So far I have four 20 gallons, four 10 gallons, two 5.5 gallons and three 2.5 gallons. I think I may have issues, lol. Love the setup.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics Lol, well there was an Aqueon dollar per gallon sale at local store so just picked up two 15 gallon, another 20 long and two more 10 gallon tanks.
Love the planted tank with africans! I have just started one my self but as with yours I can’t keep them planted in the substrate. But love the look keep up the good job
I just adopted a cichlid from an assorted tank. Just trying to figure out what kind it is. It looks kind of like a Neolamprologus sexfasciatus? It is white (w/lightblue undertone) with black bars and has blue around the eyes a yellow tint to the head region and tail, and a blue tint on the ridges of his dorsal fin. also, a black spot on the gill. he was getting bullied at the store, so I brought him home to live with my one eyed polar blue parrot Cichlid, but it might not work out so well lol. My parrot cichlid is pretty naughty. I guess having one eye and being previously bullied has made him paranoid or more aggressive maybe😄 yes yes that’s right. I have no idea what I’m doing right now. Lol.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics Oh nice. One more question, would brichardi do well in a 40 breeder with multies? Im getting a LOT of mixed answers and want to hear your opinion. The tank will have a good amount of rock work and shells.
Hi Jason please can you tell me why you do not have the seachem hang on the back on this 33 Tanganyika cichlid tank ? As i know from your reviews you rate the seachem very highly Paul from the UK
We have so many tanks we can’t run HOB on all of them or we would run out of power. It’s a great filter for that tank though (I would run two of them on a 33 long though).
Jason “Thanks You” I’ve learnt so much from watching your videos. You explain it as it is and easy for me to understand as new to the hobby. I’m starting my 3rd tank & using an 80cm terrarium. I prefer low tanks as I find it easier to work on. I love plants and my tanks are verging on mini jungle. Will dwarf cichlids be okay in that type of tank Thanks Tony 🇬🇧
What type of dorf cich is that tho? Depending on the species they will do just fine and they will be happier in lower tanks than taller tanks since all the dorfs I kno so far are bottom dewllers. Wish you good luck with your new tank, plants and dorfs!
Looks good dude! I'll keep an eye out for a 33 long. I recently got rid of a 55 because of the depth. You should print out some of the baseball style shirts like Joanna was wearing on the last video. Even the sparkly pink logo was kinda cool!
Hi Jason, your video has inspired me, but I've been discouraged by some from setting up a Lake Tanganyika tank due to the difficulty of maintaining the water parameters for these fish that react poorly to very subtle changes in water conditions. I have a thermal mixer maintaining incoming tap water at a constant 79 degrees, so any temporary fluctuations during water changes would be in the GH and PH. If I kept my water changes to just 10%, twice a week, would that be harmful to these fish?
@@PrimeTimeAquatics I hope that it shouldn't vary by much. I've automated the water changes to a point where I can perform them quickly. I was a little surprised of the push-back from people on this...they can't be that fragile can they?
I've had a Tang tank for 25 years they are awesome fish. Great personality. I've have same fish in my tank but with Brichardi. Brichardi are breeding machines and fiercely protective of their fry!
Have a chance to get a male and 3 female lelupi from our fish guy. But I have a 30 long. Would that be ok? Didn't get them today because of being unsure. Great video! Always seem to find a video with info I need from, what I call, my "five deadly venoms" lol.
Hey Jason, What does neolamprolagus mean. I used to think it meant shell dweller but I don't think juliis or leleupi are shell dwellers are they. Love this tank.
Found a website earlier for water hardness. Apparently where I live it's documented as soft\hard. I guess that's the British way of saying neutral. Looks like I'm getting tetras. I'm really wanting lemon and/or glass bloodfin tetras with some corydoras
I'm new to the hobby and live in a state with perfect water for conditions for cichlids. What type of cichlids would work in a colony in a 40 breeder? I'm leaning towards a small group of mbunas in the 40 breeder. Maybe 8 or 10 cichlids in the tank. Could anyone give me some tips and information on the do's and don'ts?
@@PrimeTimeAquatics thank you so very much for replying. I really appreciate the information as a lot of sights that I have found dont really give good information on keeping cichlid together(different species of mbunas, peacocks, etc). What different kinds of mbunas would work well together in a zpecies tank of that size?
Trying to fdecide on stocking for a 55 gal. I'm considering new world cichlids. Would you keep 2 jack dempseys in a 55 if you got several as juveniles and let two pair off (and responsibly rehoming the others)? P.S. awesome tank as usual. Shellies and transcriptus is another option I'm thinking about...
how do yo maintain the flow rate? I mean, it has to be very low, other wise all decorations will be dislocated. How about surface agitation with plants all over? How often do you need to change water,to clear out fish debris, as i see no water movement in this tank?
Not necessarily, but you will probably want to find ways to removes the nitrates - maybe that means adding a bunch of pothos plants growing out of your tank?
@@PrimeTimeAquatics Would hornwort or anachris do the trick? I have pothos also but more of the other two. I have a 16' x 11' pond choked with hornwort I think I could walk across. I'm guessing the multi water parameters are probably too harsh but what do you think?
I have a question about this fish , the make me buy but I not sure what it is? That told me it was a Vieja Cichlids. I’m not sure what to feed them or anything else
If I were going to keep them again I would do a species-only tank, preferably 6ft long and get a colony of 20 or so to start. I would give them lots of rocks and feed them mostly kelp flakes/pellets and algae wafers. Thanks for watching!
@@PrimeTimeAquatics Oh phew. You're just winging it then... I thought there was like a system and not just "hope for the best" and don't ruin the whole scape...
Where is a good place online to purchase a group of juliodichromis transcriptus like 5 to 10 to obtain a breeding pair hopefully. I'd like to breed some I'm bored with the brichardi but maybe I could put a breeding pair in the 55 gallon with my breeding pair of Brichardi and have them both produce fry, Ive got big clam shells and conch shells they could breed in and have privacy👍
Want your fry to survive? Give them ceramic caves. Even with your compressips there will be range wars. You will be scooping and taking fish to the fish store couple times a month. Take it from someone who has done this a long time. Had colonies of C. Foai Mbete (real purple ones) that would spawn and preferred my hand instead of a net to spit in. This with lamprichthys overhead.
According to an article I read from Reef Builders, I think the red algae you have is a form of freshwater coraline algae and it is found in Lake Tanganyika...reefbuilders.com/2020/06/22/red-encrusting-algae-grows-in-freshwater-too/

Looks good dude! I'll keep an eye out for a 33 long. I recently got rid of a 55 because of the depth. You should print out some of the baseball style shirts like Joanna was wearing on the last video. Even the sparkly pink logo was kinda cool!
She's actually working on some new shirt designs as we speak. :-)
@@PrimeTimeAquatics Dope! It's nice that she's comfortable getting in these videos with you. You guys are funny together!
WIth small water changes I don't see why the pH or GH would fluctuate?
@@PrimeTimeAquatics I hope that it shouldn't vary by much. I've automated the water changes to a point where I can perform them quickly. I was a little surprised of the push-back from people on this...they can't be that fragile can they?
I've had a Tang tank for 25 years they are awesome fish. Great personality. I've have same fish in my tank but with Brichardi. Brichardi are breeding machines and fiercely protective of their fry!
Have you noticed a lower bio load with this set up? Compared too your other mixed African cichlid tanks?
Not really - just depends on the overall size of the fish and the amount of food they consume.
Have a chance to get a male and 3 female lelupi from our fish guy. But I have a 30 long. Would that be ok? Didn't get them today because of being unsure. Great video! Always seem to find a video with info I need from, what I call, my "five deadly venoms" lol.
That works!
I got the shirt you're wearing for father's day!
That's awesome! Thanks for your support. :-)
nice video
Hey Jason, What does neolamprolagus mean. I used to think it meant shell dweller but I don't think juliis or leleupi are shell dwellers are they. Love this tank.
I’m not sure what it means off the top of my head, but you are correct in that the genus includes both shell dwellers and rock dwellers.
I have the best luck with mbuna in a 40 breeder if it is a species tank. Ideally - 1 male and 5-6 females.
I think that is an option. A 55 Tanganyika tank is cool too! :-)
В аквариуме 2 аэрлифта и всё?
Каким образом исчезает амиак и нитриты?
how do yo maintain the flow rate? I mean, it has to be very low, other wise all decorations will be dislocated. How about surface agitation with plants all over? How often do you need to change water,to clear out fish debris, as i see no water movement in this tank?
The two sponge filter provide all the surface agitation necessary. We do about a 30% water change once a week.
I was looking into getting fish from this lake but I'm into a little larger ones
A small correction it's julidochromis transcriptus not neolamprologus 😊
Support from India.. It's awesome..
Oh my gosh - yes! Oops.
Where can I purchase Lake Tanganyika cichlids in-person in the DMV / Mid-Atlantic region (DC, MD, VA) or even PA?
The Wet Spot ships!
Nice vid
Second ✌️
Love the tank demensions. 2/3rds of a 55.
Me too!
Awesome video Wich is the red one in the video
Those are Leleupi
if the water out of my tap reads 20 PPM nitrates, does that scuttle my plans for a multi cichlid tank?
Not necessarily, but you will probably want to find ways to removes the nitrates - maybe that means adding a bunch of pothos plants growing out of your tank?
@@PrimeTimeAquatics Would hornwort or anachris do the trick? I have pothos also but more of the other two. I have a 16' x 11' pond choked with hornwort I think I could walk across. I'm guessing the multi water parameters are probably too harsh but what do you think?
Enjoy the videos.
Thanks Lori!
That’s a great tank!
I have detritus worms in my tank please give some advice how I can fix this
I usually just let the fish eat them.
Where can I buy 33 Longs I can not find them in stock anywhere.
Usually local fish stores can order them.
I have a question about this fish , the make me buy but I not sure what it is? That told me it was a Vieja Cichlids. I’m not sure what to feed them or anything else
How can I send a picture??
You can send me pictures to my Instagram or Facebook. :-)
Prime Time Aquatics just send the picture on FB
Hey I'm a huge fan of yu & I would love to get more details on Tropheus fishes
If I were going to keep them again I would do a species-only tank, preferably 6ft long and get a colony of 20 or so to start. I would give them lots of rocks and feed them mostly kelp flakes/pellets and algae wafers. Thanks for watching!
@@PrimeTimeAquatics thanks for the reply
If possible please do a video on it 😇
Hey Jason.
How do you pull the fry out?
It's a pain - I try to corner and catch them when they are not by the rocks. :-)
@@PrimeTimeAquatics
Oh phew. You're just winging it then... I thought there was like a system and not just "hope for the best" and don't ruin the whole scape...
dont the plants keep the water too soft for cichlids..they need a high PH
I've never had them alter water chemistry in any meaningful way.
Glorious 2 tone beard by the way! lol
Dude, when this Covid stuff calms down, I would like to order your t-shirt... Posdible to ship to Maldives???
I'll have Joanna look at the shipping costs! Thank you!
@@PrimeTimeAquatics thats great, our boarders still closed so we still have some time to figure things out... Love ur videos dude... Keep it up!!!
Your best bet might be The Wet Spot?
@@PrimeTimeAquatics thanks a bunch 👊
Want your fry to survive? Give them ceramic caves. Even with your compressips there will be range wars. You will be scooping and taking fish to the fish store couple times a month. Take it from someone who has done this a long time. Had colonies of C. Foai Mbete (real purple ones) that would spawn and preferred my hand instead of a net to spit in. This with lamprichthys overhead.
Your "neolamprologus transcriptus" looks more like julidiochromis regain.
I meant Julidochromis transcriptus. The regani have more of a stripped pattern. I have had them too. :-)
Please do a update 🤩
Do both tanganyikan female an male color up
Usually they are very similar in color.
I want Julies so bad, but I can’t find them anywhere😥
Maybe try the Wet Spot?
👍
According to an article I read from Reef Builders, I think the red algae you have is a form of freshwater coraline algae and it is found in Lake Tanganyika...reefbuilders.com/2020/06/22/red-encrusting-algae-grows-in-freshwater-too/
Thank you!
R all lake tanganyikan fish this small
The Frontosa tend to be the largest of the common fish from Lake Tanganyika. Some of the feather fins can be on the larger side too.
👍👍👌👌😍😍
I am way to early here lol
If everyone in the whole wide world would keep fishes then you and jhon would beat pewdipie in terms of subs.
Now there's a thought. Haha
No, truly you people r awsome!
I’m somewhat copying you on this
