I find Altolamprologus sp. 'compressiceps shell' to be a universal tank mate of shelldwellers, no matter the size of your aquarium. In the wild, they live in the vicinity of shelldwellers or directly inside colonies providing additional help in defense against other predators in exchange for some fry once a while. Super interesting looks and behavior, highly adaptable and built to tank any attacks of similarly-sized fish. Highly recommended :-)
Large sailfin mollies and brichardis with shell dwellers in a 55 gallon tank made a stunning tank although freuent thinning of young fish was neccesary, but as shell dwellers and brichardi are so hard to find not to mention expensive, i had no problem sellin them.
I been looking for multi shell dwellers for 8+ months, just got 6 today from my gf for my birthday and came straight to this channel, they been top of my list for a while and super excited got them in quarantine now but gonna be moving them into a 30g after a week
Ive actually had a gold mystery snail in my shell dweller tank for over a year and I honestly think I've never seen any sort of aggression twords it at all
Thanks Jason! My multis need some predation ;) Started with a 20 long and now have a 20 long AND a 40 breeder and they still keep coming!!! I guess there is more than one reason they are called multis!!
I have just made a shell dweller tank and just want to say thanks for the insight on tankmates, I'm new to the hobby and these guys will be my first ciclids
My 20 long Simili tank has mystery snails in it. They don't seem to have any issues. I see them moving the little pond slug snails that came in on the plants around, but they just pick them up and move them then spit them out. I do have some shrimp in it also but they will attack them. I have rock work and guppy grass that they can hide in but if they get near a shell it's game over. I won't put any more shrimp in. I'll be moving them to a 60 breeder this month, along with some Julies and Cyprichromis that I'll be picking up at the next green water swap. See you guys then Jason.
I have a group of Telmatochromis temporalis “shell” they are pretty cool like a dwarf buffalo cichlid that just happens to be a shell dweller only gets 2-2.5 inches. They hold their own though, have them with a group of Turkana Jewel Cichlids. The Turkana’s are double the size, but they keep them in check.
Yes, goofy is understated!! I thought they were creepy before I got them but after I got some I now find them fascinating 😊😊. You are correct though as you once said: keep the lid on tight! They will escape! I love the magenta/purple colored ones
After 6 years in the hobby. I'm just getting into cichlids, with 7 angels, 6 electric blue acara, and a geophagus tapajo in my 100 gallon community tank. I'll have an EBA or Tapajo in all my community tanks from now on!! Gorgeous alert fish that never see the coryadora that's about to bounce off their head. I'm not sure I want to build a tank without corys and loaches. These shell dwellers are adorable, but I still have apistos, kribs, and rams to explore, and they all go with my community tanks. This is an entirely different branch of the hobby! They sound like 1.5 inch murder machines.
My 100cm/ 180 Liter Tank is in the Run in Phase at the Moment, hope nitrite is next week below enough and then i put a pair of Julidochromis transcriptus and six Neolamprologus multifasciatus in, i am really excited, its my first aquarium since over 20years. I also watched for Synodontis lucipinnis or Cyprichromis/Paracyprichromis but i afraid that the tank is too small...
🤔 I've got a established 10 gallon tank but recently lost 2 fish in less than a month . Water levels are fine but I was thinking of cleaning it adding more sand and clean rocks and wood in case of koodies .🤔 I'm also probably going to pull the live plants out and go all silk with thse BIO ORB Silk plants i bought .🌿🌱 My live plants just don't do well in my tank 😕. Should I do this and how big of a water change should I do 50-75% I'm not sure . All I have is small tetras and a couple Cory's. Let me know if you have any input . Thanks 🤗
What size was your tank? I'm trying to do that right now with a 55 gallon. Since the Brichardi have been breeding in there for a while, the shell dwellers are having a rough time since I just added them.
I have multi’s 4 of them in a 20 gallon long, with one golden wonder killifish up top they get along fine, I was wondering if there’s any invertebrates that I can put in that will leave the eggs and fry alone , But also eat algae off the shells and sand is there any?
I actually keep a rainbow shark with my tanganyikan cichlids (3 transcriptus, 4 lelupi, 1 gold faced compressiceps) in a 40g and they get along fine. They just need a territory and some caves to hide in when they get chased.
hi Jason.. i have watched a lot of your videos.. especially the shellie's, the multi's, over and over.. i have touched bases on the lowboy you have, on filters for it and for a for a 28g lowboy.. i plan on a 28g lowboy in my bedroom in the spring or sometime.. today i'd like advice on my 20g multi tank.. looking into getting some color in the tank, 1 or 2 top swimmers.. thinking 2 Neolamprologus Daffodil 2.5"-3" females or 2 males (NO PAIR, NO BREEDING WANTED).. i think the males have just a tad more color, or they both the same with female but is smaller, like the Brichardi?.. i have a breeder lined up on the Neolamprologus Daffodil 2.5"-3" ... in your opinion, this ok for my tank.. with the Daffodil and multi getting along? i have thought about one Synodontis Petricola Dwarf but you said in a video, the bottom should be left to the multi's.. other fish i like are the punks as the are called and Cyprichromis leptosoma (Harder to find breeders).. tell me what you think on all this as i value your opinions.. any other fish i can look into adding? would 1.5 "Neolamprologus Daffodil be better? not sure if they can be sexed.. do you know? thanks, asap
Love your videos. How do you go about removing the juveniles from your Multi tanks? I have some friends that would like some. I would appreciate any incite into this process. Thank You. Dale
What are the downsides to hybrid shell dwellers? And although it wouldn't look natural, would there be a downside to using a fun color sand? Blue or green?
The sand color doesn’t really matter. The downside to the hybrids is once shell dwellers really start breeding you can get a lot of them. At that point the excess fish probably need to be moved to someone else and spreading the hybrids around isn’t a great idea?
i need help! i’ve been bingeing videos for hours😭 i have been gifted a 29 gallon fishtank , i want to do a angelfish centerpiece (1 of them) but i dont know what else to fill the tank out with
I'm in the process of stocking a 60b Tanganyika community tank. I recently added a trio of caudopunctatus to the mix. The caudos don't seem to get along with the Similis too well. Thoughts?
Sorry this is unrealated to the vid but if i wanted to tank two eels together what would be the minimum tank size and what type of eel would go best with a snowflake morray
Funny bc I had mystery and nerites with a multi colony no problems. But they absolutely detested the bristlenose and even bit off one of its anal fins. 😢 I even had SAE to control my BBA. The most interesting thing was seeing the border battles between the leleupi and multis. 😂

Yea i wouldn't put a mystery snail with my multis, but ramshorn snails do just fine with them. In my current tank, could always vary.
I love your shell dweler videos
Thank you so much for this educational video. I have a 20 gal species only multi tank, but now I have some ideas for when I upgrade to a larger tank !
First time I've seen the Cyprichromis, those look great. I am wanting to add more of an upper area fish to my multi tank and will look into those.
They’re nice but they’re pricey !
I been looking for multi shell dwellers for 8+ months, just got 6 today from my gf for my birthday and came straight to this channel, they been top of my list for a while and super excited got them in quarantine now but gonna be moving them into a 30g after a week

I've been dreaming about a multi and julii tank since I saw @blakesaquatics do it 😍 thank you so much for these ideas!!
Thanks Jason! My multis need some predation ;) Started with a 20 long and now have a 20 long AND a 40 breeder and they still keep coming!!! I guess there is more than one reason they are called multis!!

Great information. Things like this make me think about which type of fish to keep in the future. Gina
Great information!! Thank you!
When you showed their teeth, my mind immediately thought “death by a thousand nips.” Great video.

This comment was suppose to be on the mystery snail short video, not the shell dwellers video..omg
I figured that. Haha

Amazing video kind Regards Denmark🙏😊
I had success keeping brichardi with ocellatus.

Could I do ocellatus with other lake tanganyakan fish

Great question - I might hold off putting any other types of fish in the 20 gallon. Multis will often attack other fish in that size tank.
Could I do ocellatus with some other lake tanganyikan fish in a 29 gallon
Might be a little tough - they get more territorial than other shell dwellers.
Do you think gobies and loaches would match with shell dwellers? They all hang around the bottom though
Probably not - the shell dwellers don’t like anything sharing the bottom of the tank with them.
would love to do shell dwellers, but wouldn't work in my community tank..... maybe if i get another tank might give them a try, good video though.
They’re worth a try!
Love your videos. How do you go about removing the juveniles from your Multi tanks? I have some friends that would like some. I would appreciate any incite into this process. Thank You. Dale
I have so many more fish than shells they have no where to hide. 😀
What are the downsides to hybrid shell dwellers? And although it wouldn't look natural, would there be a downside to using a fun color sand? Blue or green?

@@PrimeTimeAquatics Thank you!
That beard is looking beautiful!
Why thank you 😀
Whats that floating plant at 3:25? With the rock dwellers.
Lots of hornwort.
@PrimeTimeAquatics wow the leaves look different. They look really long. I thought it was something else
i need help! i’ve been bingeing videos for hours😭 i have been gifted a 29 gallon fishtank , i want to do a angelfish centerpiece (1 of them) but i dont know what else to fill the tank out with
I usually don’t keep angelfish in anything less than a 40 breeder or even better a 4ft tank.
I'm in the process of stocking a 60b Tanganyika community tank. I recently added a trio of caudopunctatus to the mix. The caudos don't seem to get along with the Similis too well. Thoughts?
Try adding a bunch of rocks?
Sorry this is unrealated to the vid but if i wanted to tank two eels together what would be the minimum tank size and what type of eel would go best with a snowflake morray
I haven’t kept eels so I’m not sure?
Funny bc I had mystery and nerites with a multi colony no problems. But they absolutely detested the bristlenose and even bit off one of its anal fins. 😢 I even had SAE to control my BBA. The most interesting thing was seeing the border battles between the leleupi and multis. 😂
