AHHH! My ears are bleeding! Some much Latin! No, I kid. I'm a nerd. I like hearing the scientific names of things. Plus these days it actually seems to help sometimes. It seems that a lot of fish have so many different common names anymore that people call them, if you're looking for them or trying to figure out what anything is everyone calls them something different and it's confusing. So sometimes it seems it's easier to go by the scientific names. Thanks for the video. You have a nice variety of different types of videos. More in depth ones like this one, and more general ones. I'm not sure my ego can handle watching it and commenting on it so much later than other people. 😁
Ohhhh no!! RUclips has to step up their game 🤣 Funnily enough it was so much easier saying the Latin names for these ones because everyone seems to use them for Tanganyikan cichlids. Unlike the Malawi cichlids where everything is known by its nickname normally 🤣
Altolamprologus calvus and A.compressiceps could crossbreed.Cyprichromis leptosoma "Utinta" could crossbreed with Cyprichromis leptosoma "Mpulungu" ... but if you are not going to keep small fry hybrids then it is ok.We don't do that in Tanganyika usually. greetings from Europe(Croatia) All the best :)

Hi kaity, lovely setup. So you feed your fish once a night i got that part, just didn't catch what and how much to meet the requirements of semi carnivorous and herbivore fish mixed together. Literally getting a tank built and you've made a rule breaking set up work well.
That was a really beautiful review, Kaity. Your video is spectacular. I really love the underwater video. I'm guessing that was a GoPro on a tripod inside the tank? I need to go find your video on GH and KH. I still don't fully understand that. I should from school, but that's been a while. 🙂 Keep 'em coming, Kaity. And have a fantastic day! ~Ron
@@Kaityscichlids Thanks, Kaity. I think I need to take a look at that. It could be a really fun addition to what I'm doing too. Have a fantastic weekend!
I'm Sincerely loving Your All content Kaity, it's really helping Me get ready to set up My Tank! I'm just wondering? What temperature do you prefer to keep the water for your Lake Malawi Cichlids?
Thank you 🙏 I feed them a mix of New Life Spectrum Thera A which is a low protein pellet, then Aquamunch Spirulina flakes. And I also mix in some frozen brine shrimp every now and then. I find with that combination it keeps them all happy 😊
As a human being requires to survive and thrive, we need Good nutrition,Good living environment, Good air. So for fishes similarly, make sure your fishes have 1 Good Food.2 Good water 3 Good oxygen. Three ingredients to raise quality fish, simple.I will for now give you my idea of creating Good Oxygen. Especially for Chichlids, Purchase a big Air Pump and large Air Diffuser, that will have strong air coming in, that will cause the waters to churn and blow strongly in one direction This creates some turbulence that the cichlids love to play in,excercise in. My best wishes to you and congratulations on your very nice video
It would be worth it to throw in some Neothauma tanganyicense snail shells, which are about 2 inches (5 cm) in diameter about 6 per fish just to see if they will host one to breed and even live in I’d definitely love to see you give that a shot also are they the ones that have been eating the fry?! Cuz there known to eat other fishes fry in the wild… anyways just another idea I’d throw out there thanks for sharing your tanks and videos with us love watching them evolve and grow!!! ❤❤❤❤
I wish I could find some larger cyprichromis. Some the size you have. All the ones I find are small and won't last long. Love your tank and videos. Hope you get more babies to grow out.
@@Kaityscichlids no problem at all. I'm looking into getting some brine shrimp eggs. Right now I feed mine small crushed flakes. I have 3 out of 6 still smh. Thanks for the advice though.
Awesome video! Between seeing this aquarium and my friends cichlids this week I really want to have a go setting up a cichlid aquarium which I've never kept before! As they're Lake Tanganyika cichlids, do you adjust the Magnesium and Calcium levels to match Lake Tanganyika as it is the only lake in the world to have 4x more Mg than Ca, and how do you do this if you do?
Thank you!! You definitely should give it a go, they are great fish and so fascinating 😊 I only add in Tanganyikan buffer to raise the pH and KH (which helps protect the pH against swings). But you can also add in Cichlid Lake Salts if you want to, which will raise your GH and add some of those other minerals in but it's not vital
@@Kaityscichlids I'll definitely consider setting up an aquarium for them, either if I rescape my large corner aquarium or somehow find the space for another aquarium! They're certainly really interesting to watch, they remind me of the Perch you get here in the UK with how curious they are plus the shapes and behaviour of them! I've got some underwater video of them I've filmed on my channel if you want to take a look and see what you think? Ah nice, I'll have to keep that in mind for pH and minerals as Lake Tanganyika cichlids are what I'd be most interested in keeping. Do you have any tips for raising pH in planted aquariums, my nano aquarium keeps going down to 6.0 but I'd ideally like to raise it to between 6.5-7 so it's safe for cherry & amano shrimp, and then stuff like tetras or rasbora?
Thank you Duzzy!! I feed them a mix of Spirulina flakes and low protein pellets, and brine shrimp every now and then. At the moment I'm using New Life Spectrum Thera A and Aquamunch Spirulina flakes and colour food 😊
*kaityscichlids* i have a quite couple of questions and you mentioned them as well: please i like to hear from your future reference in the aquarium hobby. it seems you've built amazing volume of cichilds from the vast fast/slow and steady streams and rivers you also pointed out that a few(selective few you have will or have paired for life) you also mentioned most of them have bred once or twice and/or havent gotten the chance to breed cause they arent big enough not to forget you two different kinds(species whatever terms you like to use) that are more predatory eating fry or others fry cichilds.. so what i am and others might be wondering: will you eventually the 14 species you have separate tanks so not only they will reastablish themselves but will no longer have to constantly defend themselves or fight for a shared space?
That is a great question! They are social fish so establishing their territories and interacting with each other is part of their enrichment. However it's not ideal for fry survival. With where things are at right now, I wouldn't want to set up separate tanks for the pairs, but that would be the ideal thing to do if I wanted good success breeding them. For now I'll keep them together and remove the fry and see how they go
Greetings Kaity from across the ditch 😂 Love your Tanganyika tank! How are you finding your Trets? I see you have a few adults on there. How is their aggression? They are my favorite I've got 2 juveniles and already one is pretty aggro.
They've been really good so far!! I've got 5 altogether and 1 breeding pair, and so far the only aggression I've seen is them chasing each other a bit but nothing too crazy
@@Kaityscichlids that's both interesting and really great. I think they get a bad rap when you read up on them and the fact they are breeding and not attacking everything in the tank is also cool.
@Kaity's Cichlids, I have a 400 gallon tank that I'm preparing to set up. I am struggling daily with whether to go with mbuna, which is what my wife wants, or Tanganyikans, which I prefer due to their interesting behavior. If you could only keep one, which would you keep and why? Thanks in advance for your thoughts. Maybe you could do a video on that question? Love your content here in the States.
Wow, 400 gallons!! No matter what you go with they're going to do great in a tank that size. I think it's definitely a personal choice depending on what you are drawn towards. For me I would go for a variety of large mbuna of all different colours because the variety and size in a large tank gives it that "wow" factor where most people will find it visually appealing. Whereas Tanganyikan cichlids are gorgeous but I find people normally have to be quite fascinated in fish to have them appeal to them as much. I'll definitely make a video on this topic comparing the two at some point 😊
I kept waiting for her to address the dietary restrictions of the Tropheus, but she never did. I'm curious how she keeps them from getting bloat while also ensuring that the other cichlids get enough protein. Maybe her tank works because of all the fry available to gobble up?
Sorry for not addressing this! I feed them New Life Spectrum Thera A which is a high quality low protein pellet, mixed with Aquamunch Spirulina flakes and they've all done well on that. I even find they can tolerate Brine Shrimp every now and then. I just stay away from foods like blood worms due to the exoskeletons, and low quality foods with a lot of fillers
I got all of mine from MAD Aquariums in Brisbane and some from Atlas Aquarium, Aquarium Central and Nick's Oceanarium 😄 We have quite a few here in Brisbane Australia
@@roohollahyeylaghiashrafi7095 just because my pH in this tank is a 8.4 so it's a bit high for them, and it leaves more algae for the tropheus to eat 😊🐟

Kaity love your content❤
Thank you 😊🐟❤️❤️
That's a beautiful tank For someone looking to get into the hoby, what type of budget would I be looking at for 6 foot tank similar to yours?
Thank you so much 🙏 3 of mine are still quite small and I've found they really like brine shrimp eggs. They have been pretty slow growing though!
@@Kaityscichlids no problem at all. I'm looking into getting some brine shrimp eggs. Right now I feed mine small crushed flakes. I have 3 out of 6 still smh. Thanks for the advice though.
Hi Miss, may I know what camera do you use to shoot those beautiful closeup shots of your fishes? 😊❤
I thought you'd put the bird cage in the other room as I didn't hear her at all and then at about 9.30 she fires up haha!
Hahaha, she was being suspiciously quiet during this video 🤣 I was surprised!
Nice fish Kaity ! ❤ Nice tank too , what kind of light are You got there ? It’s AI prime ? What model ?
Thank you!! They're Freshwater AI Primes 😊
The Calvis and comps are specialised fry hunters I'd imagine that is why the fry are disappearing
Oh that is so interesting!! I never would have suspected them 🤣 I just saw the guys with the big teeth and assumed it was them
another great video thank you 🐡🐟🐠💕
Thank you!! I'm glad you enjoyed it 😊
Muy interesante tu video , muy bien explicado todo , muy hermosos ciclidos 🤩 , saludos 😃👍...
Thank you so much 😊🙏🙏
Love your videos
Thank you 😊🙏
Another great vid. Love your content. How do you feed herbivores, carnivores and omnivores all without getting digestive issues?
Regards Duzzy 🇦🇺
Thank you Duzzy!! I feed them a mix of Spirulina flakes and low protein pellets, and brine shrimp every now and then. At the moment I'm using New Life Spectrum Thera A and Aquamunch Spirulina flakes and colour food 😊
Loved my bembas ❤ traded them in a year ago
They are so cute!
I have a video of them on my channel if you wanna see 😊
Great tank! Very interesting. Do you have Gnathochromis permaxillaris in AU? It is like a geophagus of lake tanganyika, I never see it in the US.
I just had a look at it, and I don't believe so! They look awesome though :O
*kaityscichlids* i have a quite couple of questions and you mentioned them as well: please i like to hear from your future reference in the aquarium hobby.
it seems you've built amazing volume of cichilds from the vast fast/slow and steady streams and rivers
you also pointed out that a few(selective few you have will or have paired for life)
you also mentioned most of them have bred once or twice and/or havent gotten the chance to breed cause they arent big enough
not to forget you two different kinds(species whatever terms you like to use) that are more predatory eating fry or others fry cichilds..
so what i am and others might be wondering: will you eventually the 14 species you have separate tanks so not only they will reastablish themselves but will no longer have to constantly defend themselves or fight for a shared space?
That is a great question! They are social fish so establishing their territories and interacting with each other is part of their enrichment. However it's not ideal for fry survival. With where things are at right now, I wouldn't want to set up separate tanks for the pairs, but that would be the ideal thing to do if I wanted good success breeding them. For now I'll keep them together and remove the fry and see how they go
Julidochromis species are fun to breed and make excellent parents. They don't need shells - a cave made of flat rock is good.
Beautiful ❤
Thank you 😄🙏
@Kaity's Cichlids, I have a 400 gallon tank that I'm preparing to set up.
I'll definitely make a video on this topic comparing the two at some point 😊
great video thanks
Thank you 😊🙏
Your video made me get a waterbox 7225.
;)
Woohoooo, that's awesome!! 🐟🎉🎉
My black calvus grew pretty fast. Got him very small and grew to 4.5 inches in as little as 5 months
What the heck 😱 You need to tell him to drop his diet and workout routine for my fish 😂
Dream tank there…..❤
😊❤️❤️
@@Kaityscichlids Thanks!
Wow, amazing, how can I get some here as well? I would you share how you got them over?
I got all of mine from MAD Aquariums in Brisbane and some from Atlas Aquarium, Aquarium Central and Nick's Oceanarium 😄 We have quite a few here in Brisbane Australia
Love my terets 👍
What type of rocks have you used in this tank?
Love the vid! Always hard to find good videos of tropheus on RUclips.
Thank you so much 😊🙏 They are so hard to film, they move so fast! 🤣
I love Cichlids 😊
They're the best 😄
@@Kaityscichlids why you don't have any cleaner fish like plecos or corydoras?
@@roohollahyeylaghiashrafi7095 just because my pH in this tank is a 8.4 so it's a bit high for them, and it leaves more algae for the tropheus to eat 😊🐟
Great job, Kaity
Thank you 😊🙌
Kaity., You should have been a Biologist specialising in This kind of thing in the wild and that of hybrid breeding of different types of Cichlids like cloning.
A Researcher is Definately that I hear when you talk about Fish .
Really interesting video.
Thankyou for taking the time to Educate us in these Magnificent Fish.
You should be praised for what you do because I have never seen anyone who knows a subject like you do with Cichlids
Kind Regards .
Hahaha, that would be very cool!! 😎🤓 Thank you so much 😊🙏🙏
Very nice, lots of breeding going on 😊
😊🐟🐟
Hi kaity what diet do you provide for all of this fish ?
U really really really need shelldwellers, too ! ❤
I'm considering it 😁🐟🐟
