A Typical Week in an Off Grid Log Cabin, Maple Syrup with My Daughter & Sister, Smoked Venison Jerky

- Cabin life is not easy but to me the variety of tasks required to develop and maintain a successful wilderness homestead are very interesting and rewarding. During the last few days of winter, completing the interior of my log cabin is high priority before I turn my attention to the outdoor kitchen build in the coming days. Between construction projects, I pull a couple of venison hams out of the freezer and cut them into thin strips and dry/smoke them on the fire. With days reaching above freezing temperatures, my daughter Emily and sister help tap maple trees and prepare the evaporator for making maple syrup. Now that warmer weather is here, I shave my head and beard.
My wife returns from a hiking trip to Europe with Emily and visits the cabin, seeing the kitchen and bookcase wall additions for the first time.

Shawn built this and another log cabin, sauna and outdoor kitchen all by himself in the rain, snow and cold without any drawings, just a tape measure of mental imagination and a few tools. It takes an iron will that very few people possess.👍👍

Shawn, you are living your life the way my grandparents lived. They had a small farm in northern Wisconsin. My grandfather was born in 1901. They had no running water, no electricity and did everything by kerosene lanterns during night hours. Everything was "done by hand". I remember those days as a young child vividly. He would trap beaver and muskrat, skin them and sell the pelts and shoot deer with a 30/30 Winchester rifle. They depended on deer meat to survive and the few cows and chickens they had. And always a huge garden that was canned for the winter. A wood burning stove/oven for heating and cooking. So many great memories are brought back watching your channel. Thank you for sharing with us.
@Jim ...and esp those old hand tools he uses. My Daddy was born 1908 ( my last grson was born 2008) and I remember him using those tools !!! I loved it whenever Shawn would use a tool I'd not seen him use before, but by golly the memories of my Daddh use it came back crystal clear !!!! Makes Shawn's work so much more personal when that happens. I recall Daddy building ,or killing/ trapping and skinning, mother preserving everything in sundry that was grown of raised on our farm or bartered from another farmer in the region. He had a younger bro who was in Central Otago had a Stone Fruit Orchard business; every summer we headed up there on the 6hr return journey( in those days, family of 9 in the car) , to swap rolls of home grown bacon for wooden boxes of stone fruit : peaches plums apricots you name it ... all between morning and evening milking for Town Supply Dairy. Best memories as a kid! Left the farm in 1956,moved to CA…..first house ever with running water and indoor bathroom. Have never regretted my upbringing 🥰

Well Shawn ..... it looks like you have finally fully arrived at your heart’s destination. I’d provide a long list of superlatives to describe your cabin but others have already done a swell job of that in today’s comments. Your channel will always be #1 for so many people around the world because all the work involved to achieve & sustain your self reliance is done with not just determination but quiet joy.
It amazes us how you saw all this stuff in your mind and then built it all. Way back, when you built the kitchen in the small cabin, we were impressed by what you built in such a small place, but this cabin shows a true artist at work.

That's a very impressive cabin! Good luck with the Maple Syrup production this year - I just processed a bit more than five liters of syrup from my ONE tree in the back yard (it's huge) and expect the sap will run again next week after a brief pause. Oh - my doggo (Lucy) likes to barter for treats, too! Best wishes to you!

This cabin feels so much more like a home than that previous one you built Shawn. I know I said it on a video before, but it's true. It feels so warm and cozy just by looking at it on video. And it's much more bright and airy on the inside unlike the previous one. Always seemed a bit stuffy and cramped in it. Anyway, the cabin is turning out beautifully.
