  • With winter winding down, I'm eager to get started on building my summer kitchen, but first I need to finish the root cellar under the cabin and install drainage and fresh water plumbing to the indoor kitchen.

Because of your channels and Acre Homestead, we have amassed enough prepared food to sustain my husband and I for at least a year. I am now pressure canning our meats to be shelf stable, meals in a jar and buying our flour and sugar in bulk. We also have a wood cooking stove in our kitchen area that we can use for heat if needed. Thank you for motivating these old geesers to be prepared.

Hello from far north California. It was my husband's idea to prep (there's just the 2 of us). I've really gotten into growing and canning. Today will process in jars a bunch of ground venison given to us. I've tried just about everything: canning meat, cheese, butter, vac-sealing cornmeal, raisins, and many things in jars, even dry beans in half gallons, also 5-gal gamma sealed food grade buckets a-plenty. I have many hundreds of canned goods, oven canned, water bathed, pressure canned, vac-sealed, etc. Quite a vocation for such a time as this.

Don’t buy flour in bulk, it won’t last. Buy wheat ‘berries’ to store and grind as needed. Weevils are your enemy with flour.

Elizabeth, canning dairy or fatty produce is not recommended (in case you didn’t know this) neither is ‘oven canning’ which can potentially be a cause of botulism - theres tons of advice a recipes on usda websites. Obviously, each to their own - but it’s a risky thing.

Some men think that making money is the end all of life. While others see the love of a woman and the loyalty of a dog as more valuable. As we men age we long to be strong enough to build something that will last the ages and be admired by both men and women (hopefully by our children) who appreciate what we have accomplished and left for them to continue improving upon. Shawn, you are just such a man. Salute!

Hi Shawn; I love your videos.
If you find that you have voltage issues in the future, keep in mind that the ground plate that you installed needs to be in an area that there is moisture. Inside looks to be dry and dry sand can actually act like an insulator. If you were to put that plate on the outside so that rain can help dissipate the stray voltage, moist gravel works best. 5.0 ohms or less is what is recommended. Take care. Mike Dupree

Just a thought: old grey water systems used a soap box which would catch the food fats, soap and minor kitchen food Organics….if you fill the drain box completely with gravel the water will perk out but the gravel will plug up with fats and soap….leave a 6-10 cubic feet box where this will settle and stay and the water drain off through the gravel…that’s how the old systems worked…they often had 50 ft of drainage pipe like a septic tank but much smaller drain field. Im sure you know al, this 😊

Hi Shawn, have you ever thought of installing micro hydro near you cabin? It looks like you have enough flowing water all year round. A small turbine would generate more then your solar on a peak winter day. And it would generate it all year round, 24/7. It could even power a small heater, heating the greenhouse or cabin.

Shawn, you may want to rethink that 90 degree el at the end of your grey water drain. With the possible addition of solids such as food residue, and the omnipresent possibility of a killer frost some years, a sweep T with a cleanout or two 45 degree els might be a happier long term solution, I'm certain you already know this, but would hate to see it forgotten until after you have piled a bunch of stuff on top of it.

taters are pretty close perhaps another row of equal parts of each tater type ... to ensure extra for replanting and leftovers to mid April ... as for the other veg a good storage idea ... make a celery carrot tater dice bag of roughly 1/4in dice mix ... instant stew addins ... also a few bags of hash brown sized so 1/2in taters ... they can always be mashed or kept as cubes a done like fries etc ... even breaded or cheese fondue too same for carrots and celery ... even peas mixed in the small dice will work well ... also lots of sweet onion and stewing onions to go with regular and garlic chives and scallions ...
    .
preprepped for cooking comes in handy on those short time to cook days of heavy work ... or too tired to do lots of prep ... just pull the predone stuff and fix dinner
    .
here's a thought ... dig a cellar under yur outdoor kitchen accessed from the root cellar ... put cedar boards inside with benches etc ... add a smoke stack exit ... insert one of your hot tent camp stoves setup for a sauna and poof you have a sauna in house that you can use all year long without freezing and keep your cellars warm in winter ... make it with a large oval tub and it can be both a hot tub and sauna ... just recirculate the water around the stove for heating ... include a pelttier fan/pump to make the water flow and your off grid running
    .
if you are able .... dig a 5 foot deep trench down the middle of your cellar floors line with planks and or sawdust mixed into clay ... in winter haul ice blocks upto the trench ... lay with sawdust under around and over for each course ... and fill trench ... use a slat grid over top to keep the cold in then the ice will chill the cellar and add moisture when it melts ... and you should have ice a good long time down there as well .. I am certain you can find sawdust easy enough with a mill handy ;)
    .
if you stone your sump pit you could top it with fire ash and left over charcoal bits so as the drain does it's thing it passes through coal gravel and perhaps some sand etc giving it all a quick natural filter for the earth to work with ... heck build a scrub clearing fire over the sump pit once its raised add gravel and brush and set on fire ... it will burn down and mix as it goes ... even toss in extra sawdust after its out to work as a worm medium then the sump will also put great nutrients into the surrounding grounds and the meadow will take off toss a few mixed berry bushes down towards the stream from the sump and have them as open harvest ... just broadcast sew a handful of every type of berry you can get seeds for ... and toss em out and cover with some quick dirt to keep most from the birds and squirrels ....
    .
somewhere near the stream at the end of the berry patch drop a salt lick for summer ... they get a snack water or salt all in the same place and not to close or too far away ...
    .
that cellar is growing well ... soon it will be green house hustle and garden shuffle ... then back to work ... BUSY season is upon you ... now that wife and daughter are back from their shorts weather trip and perhaps have gushed about the joy of it for a few days ... more hands will get the place setup for summer sooner ...
    .
glad to see the wife has found something she likes ... cheese is awesome ... cheddar is simple ... Brie is great and Mozzarella and boccacinni ... the babybell sized balls of cheese is a second cooking of mozzarella whey to get the last of the fats from it .... boccacinni means twice cooked ... I do suggest half a dozen chickens and a rooster for bug control and fresh eggs ... every spring let one of a weeks eggs per chicken get fertilized ... after 3 years start swapping chickens with newer birds ... one or two a year .. the extra birds from a fertilization time keep feeding into winter and you have fresh chicken in winter even the young roosters for the pot ... 6 laying hens should give you 4 to 6 eggs a day plenty for breakfast and cooking other things etc ... they can also be pickled brined or even hard boiled for longevity ...

Awesome video! I enjoyed the section where you spoke about your sink drainage. I have an environmental background and I remediate DNALs, VOCs, and other chemicals. You made an excellent point about using biodegradable or environmentally friendly products. As your building up the mound for your drainage, have you considered adding ash or carbon around the deposit end of the pipe to help filter liquids and break down food waste? Keep up the awesome work. You're and inspiration.

    • @jockeberg4089

This. I'd be worried that the pipes and drainage would get clogged with food waste after a while without some kind of sedimentation tank or some way to help the waste break down (ash or carbon as you suggest). But maybe it's not as much of an issue as I worry it might be?

They make small heater elements for cabinets for woodworkers to put their various finishes in, so they don't freeze during cold weather.. Not sure about their details but they're intended to be low wattage. Was thinking they might be enough to keep that space up to temp if it's really well insulated and may not be that big a draw on your solar system.

Thanks Shawn. The cabin is looking great. I feel you have to put temperature/ humidity monitors in the basement then you can use that data to build or adjust what you want. In my greenhouse I struggle with humidity. This morning 73% @ 7°C. La Crosse View is a great choice because you can add more sensors. Thanks again. Greenhouse updates??? How did it fair over the winter?

Cellar walls look real nice! Funny watching dogs get used to going up stairs. One of my favorite dogs had to go everywhere with us. She started climbing the barn hayloft ladder. We had to pull her over the top there was nothing for her feet to grab. She did fall once so i always went behind her after that like you an Cali. Good to see plumbing too. Thank you

If you built a cold frame box on the hillside, you could use the pipe and a computer fan to blow heated air from the cabin into the box. The front wall of the outdoor kitchen would be close enough to run a duct or pipe into frames for heat. People are using old windows for the tops of cold frames. This is a way to make your stove in the cabin extend your growing season. An A/C thermostat placed outside and in the fan power circuit would make the fan automatic. To reduce noise the fans could be placed in the boxes and pull the warm air to them.

Sand will not be good for your electrical ground. I remember the Mall of Memphis (Tennessee - USA) was BUILT on 8 feet of sand. When they realized their error they took scrap steel and trenched all the way around the Mall and welded that scrap together to create a "grid" for arresting electricity.

Hi Shawn. I am a follower of your two channels, for a long time. I am from Paraguay, a country in the very center of South America, but more than 8 years ago, I am a resident of Orlando Florida. I have accompanied all your cabin constructions and even that of your beautiful daughter. But the one I liked the most is the last one, bigger and more complete. I have accompanied you all the days of summer, winter, with sun, with snow. And I want to tell you that the life you lead is beautiful. I love your dog. Congratulations on your work and I can hardly wait to see it all finished. Maybe one day I can send you a painting painted by me to decorate a wall in your cabin

Dear Shawn l have watched , learned and loved your building your cabins so much that l was very upset about your leaving your first cabin, My hopes was for you and family to live and grow and enjoy your life in that cabin. I do realize things change, Your life style is a true inspiration for me . I enjoy your relationship and love you show for your companion Callie . I just watched your Video showing you felling sick. I am sending prayer for a complete recovery, and May God watch over you , keep you safe from all harm. Your talking about the water , may be the cause, would it not cause your Callie to feel sick also, just a thought . I have experienced the same problems and discovered , my being alone and depressed was a big cause. I prayed to our Lord an Savor, he has given me complete recovery. By his love for me l am completely saved Amen for the love of our God’s family Stay Safe My Love

Onions and garlic store really well if you string them together, air can circulate all around them and prevent rotting.maybe you could hang them from the rear of the cellar stairs ,out of the way, hopefully you’ll have a good harvest this year

If you take your carrots out of the garden clean them off and bring them into your root cellar and Bury them in clean dry sand in wooden boxes they could last for most of the winter. Have you tried braiding your onion and hanging them up from your ceiling same with your garlic. Herbs can be done the same way.

If you put in a pvc pipe at ground level coming out of the root cellar /walk-in basement with 1/4 " galvanized mesh and window screen to keep bugs and pests out, it would create enough air flow with another vent at the ceiling level to regulate the air flow you could put in dampeners to control the volume of air flow.
