    To prepare for relaxation this winter at the log cabin (actually, my wife and I had the first fire in the woodstove a few nights ago when it got down close to freezing), I reassemble the wood stove, including cleaning the glass, replacing the rope gaskets and hooking the chimney back up. I get up early and cook blueberry bannock (I planned to have pancakes, but I ran out of milk and eggs).

    That burlap bag is a nice touch for hiding whatever brand of coffee that was. Plus, it really fits in with the cabin's overall style & feel much better. I also like how you're showing how to maintain and clean the pieces of the stove. It's not just an idealized life; there's a lot of work, a lot of things people don't even think about in our modern, convenience-saturated lives. I like how you willingly (at least on camera, lol) do these things.

    Hey Shawn, the filter in the moka coffee machine (we call it moka in Italy, don't know how you refer to it in Canada) must be completely filled up by coffee powder. No half-way possible with such system! The moka only runs with full load, fixed amounts of coffee in the filter and of water in the bottom reservoir (water must reach just under the pressure valve). The reason is that you need the coffee to be compact causing pressure build up when water starts to boil. That pressure is needed in order to extract the flavors from the coffee. Also, make sure to use the right grain size for the grinded coffee. It must be much finer for the moka than for normal gravity-fed american filter coffee!

    • @lucianatrambaglio4881
      @lucianatrambaglio4881 3 года назад

      I am Italian and drink only decaffein coffee, just like Shawn makes it. I do not fill up the filter with ground powder coffee and it is as good flavored as ever. Usual Italian coffee it's too strong for my taste and too small the one from the "bar" !

    I missed the parts where you cook your meals!! I really like that and it makes me hungry every time you share it. Looking forward to enjoy your content when it finally starts to get cold here in germany. We don't have a wooden stove or any other "trivial" tech in our house to get it comfy. Therefore I'll enjoy the sound of your stove and the calm of your environment. Your lifestyle reminded me to get outside more often and I am glad that my little son (6 yo) enjoys it too when we walk through the woods. He is Iistening anxiously when I tell him what my granddad told me many years ago. I really appreciate it to spend time outside... the smell of the woods is balm for the soul and it is actually changing my mind. I started to live more conscious (if that is the right word), don't eat meat at least one day a week, reduced the amount of alcohol I used to drink, tried to waive sweets and the excessive use of electric (entertainment) devices and so on. I hope you'll read this and realize how valuable (or actually mindchanging!) your videos are for some people. Please continue your great work and live the dream many people are afraid to live! If I ever get the chance to travel to Canada I would "spend a leg" to have a beer and a great conversation with you at the cabin! Expect more of my (horribly written) comments in the next videos

    HI Shawn. As always a great video. With the hustle and bustle of "normal" city life and working, you really have got the right perspective of being self reliant and getting away from it all. I can live vicariously through your channel.

      holy smokes you are going to build a sauna? soon enough you can open up a retreat center spa. yes I loved those gaitors as well, especially when I was walking through thick brush I was really glad that I had them. but after the trip I heard that the teeth of gabon vipers can be 2 inches long :O

    Shawn great video as always. Are you looking forward to fall in Algonquin? It’s my favourite time there. No bugs , beautiful colours and cool nights. Great time to have a campfire. I am heading the thanksgiving weekend for a week.

    • @christopher6460
      @christopher6460 5 лет назад +2

      You think that cabin would survive one of your winters? Lol

    • @juhonieminen4219
      @juhonieminen4219 5 лет назад +2

      As a wilderness-happy finn I can say that it is getting there. Lots of good laybor in these videos, and good results. If I ever spot any mistakes, mostly I can find the debate about those errors in the comments, and many of them have been answered and cleared out in the later videos.
      But if you really wan't to live in such a place over the winter, you need a sauna and a better way to heat water to A) bath, and B) to wash clothes. Sauna with a proper old time cauldron will do it. But it will waste firewood, because of the lack of users. It would take a large family or a small willage to make it energy-efficient.
      I never go to the cabin between december and february, because of that reason. I wan't to save resources.

      @@juhonieminen4219 you sound like an selfless man...i purposely go ice fishing just so I can sit by the fire haha I guess I'm selfish. Lol I really love your countries scenery by the way, definatly on my travel list.

    Great job with replacing the rope seals for your indoor wood stove ! Looks like a lot work to take it apart and clean off all of the buildup. Your outdoor oven looks like it is still drying out and looks good ! Thanks for the video !

    Hello Shawn, this is my first response on your channel. I follow you from the beginning. Your work is fascinating and every Friday a highlight in my day. Respect for everything you do and the time to editing your work. I live in the Netherlands and what you are doing is my dream. But that space you have is not available in Holland. Only when you are millionaire. I wish you a good autumn and winter. Enjoy your work and be careful and stay healthy! Greetings to Cali and your family. And for the Dutch subscribers, heel plezier met de films van Shawn en een mooie herfst voor iedereen! 🤗

    Another beautiful video. How about cutting the ends of your stove gasket at 45 degree (or lesser) angels instead of 90 degree angels to lessen any smoke leakage? This works when replacing gaskets on my Kamados. I believe it would work for a stove as well.
