Traditional Woodworking using Hand Tools: Finishing Interior of an Off Grid Log Cabin DIY Kitchen

  • After skating on thin ice, I use traditional woodworking handtools to work on the interior of the log cabin. I add a second layer of wood to the kitchen countertop, install a cistern hand pump to supply water to the sink, fabricate and install copper to the backsplash and build my dog, Cali, a new raised bed with storage inside.
The video starts with drone footage of me skating on thin ice of a marsh and at the end of the video, I talk about doing exactly that as a kid and how I learned so much from that marsh, from how to skate and play hockey to how to identify birds, animals and insects of a marsh.
Thanks to David Oxley from Precision Sheet Metal for his generous donation of the sheet of copper.

Back in 1962 my dad and I built a cabin up in this area a place called Coldsprings. Our cabin had all the Amenities like inside bathroom and running hot and cold water electricity. It was 40’ X 27’ two story. We built a big fireplace that could burn a 59” log. The fireplace was in the center of the cabin and after a few days the rocks would heat up and upstairs we would have to open the windows because it would get up to 80 degrees. We got most of the wood for it from and old home that was built in 1840 in Sacromento that was being removed that was next to the Capitol building. My dad bought to house for one dollar and we had to tear in down or move it. We tour it down and saved the wood. All that wood was rough cut so it was full size. The cool thing was there was very little knots and a lot of the timber was knot free. I had the best time working with my dad on this cabin. Before we got it finish my parents had to sell our home in Sacromento because their service station failed when the new freeway was opened. I worked there when I wasn’t in school from age 9 to 14. When we moved to the cabin my dad went back to driving gas tankers and would stay at my grandmothers in Oakland during the week and come to the cabin on the weekends. The cabin wasn’t even close to being finished when we first moved in. The water and the electricity was out front on a post. My dad would come up on the weekends and he and I would work on the cabin. One of the first things we did was to put the shingles on. Dad and I started on one side and got that one side done and he had to go back to work driving> he was going to finish the roof the next weekend. When he got back up to the cabin I had finished the roof. I was so proud that I could do that by myself. That roof was good for over 40 years. So my dad and I cleared the lot and built the cabin. It is only about 12 miles from our home in Twain Harte Ca. My dad had some strokes and he sold the cabin in 1994. It was supposed to say in the family but mom had passed in 1978 and dad wasn’t thinking right after having those small strokes when sold the cabin. So in 1996 on January 20th the wife and I moved to our home here in Twain Harte so it all worked out. I thought I would give you a little info about me. My dad was a great guy and I was very lucky to have him teach me how to be a man. The things I learned from him shaped my life and I learned that if you want something and can’t afford it then make it yourself. It lead me to be a millwright and I have built things that went on the voyager 2 spacecraft and been a sheetmetal worker and machinist and welder and even a welding teacher. I learned to be self-reliant and that is way I like your posts so much. You are showing the young people that they can do this too. So your videos are not only entertaining but are also very important too. Thanks again.

My dad passed in 1996 about three weeks after my wife and I moved back up to this area. ithink he would have like our home in Twain Harte. We are at 4500 feet above sea level here and we loveit here.

It was a long time ago Mom passed back in 1978 and Dad 1996. I was lucky to have two great parents. But this video is about Shawn not me. I just wanted to let Shawn know that I really like his videos. Sorry Shawn I didn't want to make this about me.

    • @cacatr4495
      @cacatr4495 6 лет назад +12

Gregory Rapier If you don't mind my saying, you didn't make this about you. You contributed recollections that completely fit. Others too, relate to your history, having similar stories. There is nothing shameful about a sense of community that people share. Society has lost that, and many would say that it's been detrimental. If you'll notice, at this time, at least 45 people have given your comment a thumbs up; that's a lot of appreciation. I think it's fair to say that they're saying thank you, and Shawn too, gave an appreciative mark. Thanks again.

@Mashud Ahmed I think that once money came into being was the downfall of mankind. Once we as humans stopped living in villages and tight nite family groups, we also started loosing who we are. People who still live in small towns, and villages as in Europe, for the most part, still rely on each other. Every once in a while you 'll see us all rally for someone in need or there is a disaster we rally to help with supplies to help those victims to get back on their feet. But for the most part, we live more and more in seclusion. When we still lived together in villages and family groups we all pulled together for the common good of all in that village or family group. When a hut or home needs building everyone moves as one. We hunted together, we planted and harvested for the good of all. Everything was/is shared in small groups and villages. We see that humans still living in small groups of the Amish how everyone gathers, without being asked or for money

I have just sat watching you construct your beautiful kitchen. You took me back to when I was a young child and watched my grandfather and my father both carpenters work with hand tools..its a craft. My son followed the family tradition and is a carpenter too, but it's all power tools, you are a credit to your trade..the brace and bit, the sash clamps as we called them, even the oil stone to sharpen your plane, I still have them to this day...thank you for a trip down memory lane. I hope you will be happy in your new home.

Love watching the time you and your dog spend together. I had a golden mix, he passed away from cancer at 9.5 yo this past August. We used to hike and swim and do pretty much everything together. I've been pretty stagnant since his passing. The unconditional love from a dog and the big wet kisses are the best next to the quiet times just sitting together enjoying the sounds of the forest. Thanks for letting us all into part of your life.

    Shawn:
Every week of watching this is food for my soul! savour every bite!
We had a pond near our house we played hockey on, friends father would drive his 1968 Dodge Power Wagon on it and plow it for us. Then we would play hockey at night with the full moon lighting up the Ice! Ahhh!! The innocence of being a boy playing hockey in the dead of night with the sounds of the blades singing through the Ice with that full moon washing the Ice with light. Ahhh! the warmth of a memory. Thanks Shawn have not revisited that memory in 47 years.

Great video (as always) Shawn! You should know you have truly inspired me. I actually purchased a book on survival recently, and plan on practicing some outdoors skills over the coming months and hopefully years! In addition, for my birthday, my future father-in-law bought me some tackle and a tackle box for my kayak so he can teach me the intricacies of fishing. I know the basics of all of these things (I earned my Eagle Scout about five years ago) but I know I have so much more to learn, and have again been inspired by you to find and pursue the crafts that bring me life and joy! Much love-- Adam.

Why so many thumbs down? If the world had more people like this guy it sure would be a better place, a lot of people have become so removed from true happiness caught in the rat race, short tempers, hatred towards other people, a huge amount of people seem excessively concerned with physical comforts or the acquisition of wealth, and the worst thing the TV brain washing us to think its acceptable. Take a step back and take in the natural beauty that surrounds us its way better than anything you can buy.

Tina Gallagher most people know how but the right has been taken away with all the rules regulations and permits you have to pay pretty much taking away all your rights to build on a piece of land that you own that's why he is in a place where there are no building codes

Then there are..over the sink/ counters
Enjoyed it. Never, would have thought of that.

I'm a carpenter yet I'm learning a lot from you. I love your style. Just finished the plumbing in an 18 foot trailer. Your's is so simple compared to the nightmare I just went through in the last two weeks. Makes me want to drop it all and head for the woods. Thanks for all you do.

You have captured the attention of my 7-year old daughter. She was fascinated by your work in the cabin. I talked to her about what you are doing and she had a few questions. I think she may want to watch your build from the beginning. We'll see. If she keeps an interest, I'l be sure to let you know.

Great job Shawn. You are making it hard for us lesser mortals as we watch this here in Thailand. My Thai wife purchased a beautiful high quality stainless steel sink for our new kitchen. Now she likes copper, having just seen it for the first time. My wife is correct, very beautiful to look at. So, as a viewer request and small warning it the title "vdnwft" for 'viewer discretion no wifes first time' may just save a few lesser chaps heart ache of "Why can't you do that?" Easy for me, rubbish chinese tools or 'I cannot buy that tool here.'
A wonderful job and a joy to watch you working. Thank you, Greg

Hi CA Catr, may be, but most will not ship to Thailand, or the shipping cost is 3 or 4 times the product cost and there is no guarantee that he product will ever arrive. I do love wood, as do the local white ants here, they come in two sizes, huge and really big bast&&ds and just love to eat wooden houses. So my retreat farm homestead is made of concrete and ceramic tiles and needs to last my wife 40 years. 33 deg C every day here, so watching Shawn helps me feel a little cooler. His words are good for my heart as an added bonus. Kind regards, Greg

Understandable. I know that Thailand is coming into its hottest season. I would imagine that concrete retains that heat. I've never heard of white ants; thanks for educating. I suspect that the placid calm of Shawn's atmosphere is also found to be appreciably peaceful by many.

Hi Catr, Yes it is hot, we have A-C in our bedroom. Shawn is calm and happy so much different than so many other You Tubers. The contributors are great and we can have a small side bar chat is the icing on the cake. It so good to see a man making a cabin for the lady he dearly loves; as I am making the dream farm for my wife. Thank you again, Greg

Keep on truckin'!. Of late, these vids are the highlight of my weeks...
Not to nit-pick, but I keep wondering why you don't build yourself a pair of sturdy sawhorses, instead of battering that poor old square-built chair. They could be quickly knocked together from rough logs, and would save you both time and effort.
Love what you do and how you present it, and from the subs counter, seems like I'm far from alone.
You've got a real flair for editing, you don't use too much music, your work reaches a lot more people than would otherwise be the case.
As the Aussies'd say: "Good on ya!", I'm really glad for your success.

On the job site there are no such things as chairs. They turn into props, tool holders, dead weights and workbenches. Oh, they also become something to kick when you make a mistake. LOL.

Andrew Whip That, it does... It's just that it'll become loose and wobbly, and won't serve it's original purpose anymore, once he's done with the build. That, and the fact that he mentions he intends to build more cabins on his plot, means that building sawhorses wouldn't be a waste of time. Sorry if I've ruffled your feathers, that wasn't the intention...
It was just a suggestion, he's a grown man and then some.
