There is absolutely nothing wrong with having some solar panels to make life comfortable. You're still off-grid, you're still being self-sufficient, you're still building and living the life you want. You want your wife and daughters to be comfortable beyond what you have. Your home is growing out of love and that's always wonderful.

I have no issues with any choice Shawn makes. This is his cabin and way of life. I think even off grid you need some form of means to generate/produce electricity. I have no issues with solar, batteries, etc. Heck wind and even larger permanent solar panels and a battery bank would be perfectly fine in my book.

people who think that selfsufficient means you HAVE to live like the amish people are pretty stupid :D electricity makes stuff much easier and you dont have to focus some things so you can focus on more important things so why not automate stuff you can? :D

As much as we hate to admit it, there comes a time in life, when these "comfort" things become even more important. Approaching 75, I can't split a lot of wood anymore. Maybe enough for a campfire, but certainly not enough to heat our home. Grew up with wood heat and pulling water from a well, one bucket at a time. Today, I appreciate having a faucet and a flush handle. Allows me to stay in my home! Lord, willing, Shawn and his wife, will reach an age, where what they put into their homestead today, will be what keeps them there when wood splitting becomes too difficult to do each day.

My husband and I both had different dreams...He wanted to live on a homestead/farm and I wanted to live on a houseboat. After we found out that my husband had terminal cancer I decided his dream was more important than mine. I have to say I actually love living on our homestead. Caring for the livestock brings me a pleasurable and rewarding experience. I love being able to raise our own food and living in a cabin style home has been really fun to decorate. Being surrounded with trees and away from the city life has been peaceful and way less stressful. Hopefully in time your wife will feel the same as I do. I am so glad that I can spend the last days with my husband living his dream.

I’m an old lady who watches you but has little experience with this lifestyle. I have, however, felt the pull between living a conventional family lifestyle and the need to live in the wild and explore the adventures of solitude. I used to watch and read Proeneke and imagine what it might be like. However, I am not capable like you are and was a dreamer instead of a doer. I like to live through the adventures of others though, and I am glad you are finding ways to make it work with your family, whatever that works out to mean. You are definitely a treasure!

@Snow Angel RUclips has lots of videos on quilting I would start there. I originally taught myself from reading books long before the internet. When you said they use sewing machines at the local classes are they using the machines to piece the tops? I sew my tops by machine and then I hand quilt it. You should go to a class and check it out. They may be able to help you get started. Also check to see if your area has any quilt groups, try posting on Facebook to see if anyone knows of a local quilt group.

'I think your wife understands that it is never a bad thing to reinvent yourself a bit. When we retired, we began taking our motorhome and heading south for 3 or 4 months to escape the winters. One year, returning home, I said,"I dunno ... I might be able to do this full time." "Really?", said hubby. Before we got to our state line he had listed the house with a Realtor. We had been living in my absolute dream home ... an 1841 stone farmhouse, all original and filled with my antiques. I would have spent the rest of my life in that home, watching the world go by. We were close to many of the grandkids, lots of friends ... but husband desperately wanted to travel. So ... I took a deep breath and jumped off the cliff! We spent 5 years living full time on the road in our 40' motorhome and it was the MOST fun I have ever had in my life. BEST leap of faith ever.

Bravo! Hands clapping. Thank you, on behalf of your husband, for taking that leap of faith. Over the years, my better half and I did that for each other, till the Lord separated us, for the time being. No regrets, when looking back over almost 50 years together. That, IMHO, is what marriage is all about. Thank you for sharing your story. Truly appreciated!

I've been in the midst of finally getting my own house sold, so you & your wife have my deep sympathies on the cleaning & clearing out, the downsizing, the choosing (sometimes all too rapidly) through what to keep and what to sell or donate. With that said...I think it's both brave and wonderful of you to open up about these things. You're leading by example. You clearly feel there is nothing wrong, and everything right, with being able to change plans, make compromises, and have a close, loving, and utterly healthy relationship between two people who aren't identical in tastes and needs (since it's healthy to have your own interests as well as common interests with your beloved). That's a really good role model for other relationships to emulate, even if the actual details will be different in their own lives. You're both willing to try, both willing to bend a little, and both willing to realize that these things make you stronger, not weaker, as a couple. And you, Shawn, are exemplary in your emotional strength, being willing to share these things for the sake of others.

when I was growing up my parents were always together and living in the country, raising their chickens, farming, fishing, and their children. That was the life my father loved so much, but my mother not so much. Later on they came into an agreement when my mother moved to the city to be with my brothers, that my mother will live in the city permanently, and my father will go to visit them once a month to see them and buy supplies. All his life my father refused to go live in the big city. He just hated to be away from nature, and his wonderful and simple life. This arrangement worked, they were married for over 65 years, they love each other till the end.

People are generally wonderful, and very giving when the feel a connection, but many do not understand that "lots of stuff" is one of the things about modern life you are trying to escape. You are a terrific guy, Shawn, and I know you'll likely never do that to people, so you had better make the next project the Log Cabin Museum and Storage Facility. About 50' by 30' should do it, with a 12/12 roof pitch to support a South facing solar panel array which will make NASA proud. I estimate that will keep you busy for at least the next 2 1/2 years, and I doubt anyone would criticize you if you went with timber framing instead of the solid logs. God Bless you and your family, and Good luck with the empty nest situation.

Or do you just not like your life & the poor choices you have made? These reasons, or any other, do NOT give you the right to verbally abuse others (whom you do not even know!). You must be extremely dissatisfied & unhappy with your own life. Everyone can tell by what you are spewing out of that vile mouth of yours. If you can only reply with venom flowing thru your teeth, veins, why do you watch it? We dont like your vibes or jealousy, so pls stay off this ch or at least refrain from sharing your toxicity b/c we DO NOT want to hear it! I started off in a cabin without electricity and eventually, with pressures of a young family, went the complete route of electricity, septic tank, proper foundations, lights, the works. It is inevitable. The charm of living in the 18th century wears off soon enough. If we want to go back to the 18th century, all we have to do is wait for the inevitable power failures. Then it is back to lanterns and pulling water from the stream.

HaveCoffee, a FWIW..... I grew up on a farm, family of 7, where using an outhouse was the norm for both male and female. Had a slop jar under the bed for night time emergencies that was emptied on the first morning trip to take care of business. *It is the normal thing to do.* It was the necessary thing to do. Thus, it was simply taking it in stride, as a routine part of life. Gripping and complaining didn't change the fact that the outhouse was there for a purpose. Far better and easier than the more primitive ways of accomplishing that same purpose.
BTW, yes, our school had modern plumbing. Appreciated it, while at school. Yet, that didn't make it harder to go to the outhouse, as needed. School was school. Home was home. Home was where I lived and wanted to be, regardless of the plumbing arrangement.
