Shawn, I can see you getting choked up telling this story. We don’t consider our own safety when defending someone we love. Good on you for defending Callie. She is a sweetheart. And you are her hero. I’m glad you all are ok.

@@justjen4125 Sabre makes a terrific pepper Gel that I have bought on amazon a number of times. The Gel is more directional than the spray, and cuts back on blow back. But the wind can still catch, and redirect it to you. Had it happen to me when I was trying to protect my elderly Westie from an overweight, and deaf blue heeler. She charged him, and was trying to rip him a new one. This gel got her to stop right away, and she ran home. But anyway, some of the Gel blew at me from the side, and I was incapacited for about 30 mins. I had no choice though. Hitting her with my hiking stick only broke it, but had no effect on her.
My dog was on leash as usual. But the blue heeler was loose, and came out of nowhere.

Our bully puppy was attacked by a full grown Golde Retriever @wanieta9271. It was extremely traumatic. Yet, I hold no grudge against Golden Retrievers. Please read the book Pitt Bull. It will give you insight into breed blaming. Yesterday, my husband and I saw a large Golden Doodle jump out of a moving pickup truck cab in a grocery parking lot. It proceeded to attempt attacking a dog in another vehicle! Golden Doodles are Poodle Golden Retriever cross breeds. I have watched a video of Cali getting aggressive with a friend of Shawn's dog. Breed blaming does absolutely NOTHING to address dog/owner training issues. Also, American Pitt Bull Terriers are American icons. You cannot ban/blame/hate them out of existence. That has been attempted before. It didn't work. I have had a German Shepherd attack my dear old Bichon, who died not long after the attack. So, I have experienced the same loss as you. Yet, I remain a fan of ALL DOG BREEDS. I am sorry for your loss. Not being a fan of Pitties is your personal choice. However, the behaviors of dogs are the owners responsibility. It is not the breeds responsibility.

I am a retired Canadian dog trainer and after a class episode where one dog latched onto other dog’s throat, (that I was able to interrupt), my husband made me some ‘breaking’ sticks which were scattered around training hall. Slides in between attackers jaws and you rotate to force their mouth open. I never needed it but felt safer. Will use as a very large key fob when walking with my dog when travelling. It is already in my van for next trip which is to US. We are not supposed to have Pits in Ontario although lots around. The Pits are lovely, athletic, powerful dogs but to be surprised they are often dog aggressive is like being surprised a herding dog chases, well, anything that moves. I am glad you and your dog are ok. Best wishes.

I'm so grateful that Callie came out okay from the encounter, thank you for all you did to help her. I had a dog that was attacked by a Pitbull, here in Toronto, back in 2006, my mom was walking him (Casey, 10 at the time) as I was unwell. My poor mom (71 at the time) did her best to fight the Pitbull off, the dog's owner did nothing to help, until a stranger walking by grabbed a large branch to help, that's when the owner finally called his dog off. My dog was okay, traumatized with 6 puncture wounds in his neck, but after my mom got home she had severe chest pain, and after going to hospital, had a heart attack. Thankfully she survived, but her health was never the same. Casey lived till 17.5 and was a spunky 35 lb mixed breed terrier-poodle. My mom grew up in tough times and maintained her special blend of inner toughness and compassion until she passed away in Dec 2021.

If I really think about this attack I can't breathe! So very glad that Calie is doing okay, so very glad! We did fairly good too - slow! Thank the Lord! Look for any type of abscess under the skin. We experienced this approximately 1 month after, from an unseen puncture wound that had festered and abscessed. Had to doctor this for a couple months! Emotional trauma for sure! Sweet Calie - sending love!

What a horrible thing to happen to you and Calli. I bet the owner of the dog didn't want to own up to what happened so he tried to put the blame on you instead. They don't want to take up ownership on what happened. Here's a tip, carry pepper spray on hand. I was told that dogs hate the smell, you don't have to spray them with it I think but you can use the smell to ward them off; I'm glad Callie is alright at least.

I'm currently in Denver taking care of my friends' two dogs while they're on a trip. I was sitting at the back door at 7:00am today watching the dogs in their fenced back yard, which is adjacent to a residential street. The neighbors along the back yard have numerous young kids and a dog which I hadn't yet seen, just merely heard. Two people walk by with a golden retriever. Neighbor's dog charges at them and completely leaves the property without hesitation. Neighbor starts shouting "SHE DOESN'T BITE! SHE'S SWEET, SHE DOESN'T BITE!" and I see it was a pitbull. Ticking time bomb; I can't imagine having a pitbull around a bunch of young kids and especially can't imagine letting a dog, particularly a pitbull, run around off-leash and with no fencing in a residential area. This is a suburb not the countryside.
I wish I could say pitbulls and similar fighting breeds aren't a problem, but all the evidence says otherwise. It certainly doesn't help that the least-responsible dog owners seem to gravitate towards these breeds. As for the pitbull's owner you encountered on the beach, I couldn't imagine shouting at someone who an animal I'm responsible for attacked -- how can someone respond any way other than being horrified and apologetic? They shouldn't be letting a breed like that run around off-leash remotely near other people anyways.
Sorry you had that experience out there, including with the rude people at 3:00am. I have no idea what goes through some people's minds when they decide to do stuff like that, but "consideration for others" definitely isn't one of the things. Small number of careless, irresponsible people ruin things for the vast majority of people who are decent and kind. Glad you had a nice trip otherwise and thanks for cleaning up some trash.

Being a Texan I am very sorry that happened... what a horrible experience!
Pit bulls are a big problem all over the US many apartment complexes have banned that breed and some cities have as well.
When it comes to the trash on the beach, the freighters out in the Gulf dump their food trash overboard, which is disgusting and the drilling rigs and drilling ships in the Gulf cause us to frequently have blobs of oil float in and wash up on the beach ... they get coated in sand so they blend in then you step on one... now you've got a mess. I generally wouldn't recommend our beaches. And of course the closer you get to the southern border the spookier things get.

There's a lot of nuance to every situation, including high emotions and adrenaline involved. I am so sorry this was your Texas experience. So glad Cali was not more seriously hurt and that she has recovered. As a Texan, I hope this does not sour you on our great state.

That wasn't his 'Texas experience'....it was just one unfortunate event that he had at that beach. The rest of his experience was lovely. This was just an unfortunate single event from a runaway dog(the kind of thing that happens every day all over the world).

Glad Callie was ok. Anything can happen in an instant so it is essential to be aware of what's going on around me . Sounds like , besides that one incident, your trip was a success. Thanks for sharing and we hope Kallie continues to do well.

I'm sorry for all of you 😮. Thank God you're both ok. How horrible people and dogs can be. I had a heart attack watching my husband get attacked by neighbors dogs. It's so terrifying. We're ok too. I was listening in disbelief. Thanks for sharing. ❤

Having been involved with dog fights, it is amazing how one forgets about your own safety when trying to separate the dogs. I just am happy to hear Cali was OK. I am sure that her fan club is relieved as well.

OMG it is sad anytime your furbaby gets hurt , especially by another dog. I just lost my furbaby do to illness and age and it is horrible. You love them like a family member and the love and loyalty they give.

One RUclipsr will book a room to use electricity and WiFi. He’s out of Scotland and travels with his cat. Though his vehicle was stolen. The police recovered the vehicle. But that’s the reason he books rooms. Praying for safety for all! 🐾
