One of the more difficult tasks to learn in pilot training is carrying on conversations with air traffic controllers while flying the plane and looking for traffic and making sure you're on course. In fact, you're drilled to "aviate, navigate, communicate" in that order. Keep the plane in stable flight (aviate), make sure you're going where others expect you to go (navigate), and with whatever brain cells are left, talk on the radio.
I can say that pilots will have an easier time handling the workload of talking on the phone while driving, thanks to that training.

Not fully correct she is... when you have a long drive, or often the same route, you can reach a state of deep relaxation. (NOT SLEEP OR MICROSLEEP) heart rate drops, attantion goes down. (You reach your home in brain@automatic mode). Studies have shown that a phonecall can increase awareness of the driver in this situations.
This is also the reason, why germany tries to build its autobahn in a optical varied and diverse way, so drivers do not phase out.

    • @tom.prince

Part of the reason is that the passenger is in the car with the driver, and can be aware of the surroundings, and so can (a) provide additional/compensatory situational awareness and (b) modulate the conversation in response to the amount of attention required for driving (e.g. talking while on a freeway but pausing the conversation when dealing with an intersection or the like). There has actually been some research that demonstrates this, though I don't recall the details.
