- Danny was a monster. During his second solo the camera can't keep up and his left hand is a blur a couple of times. The full show is at • Vince Gill - Danny Gat... .
Search RUclips for Danny vids by Mark Tryon and Warren K for almost 20 hours of live Danny shows.
tela.sugarmegs.org has about live 50 gigs. All are worth downloading.

Danny pretty much wiped the floor, even though the guy on fiddle held his own! Danny has to be one of the most underappreciated guitarists of all time. If it wasn't for RUclips I would have never heard of this guy and I've been playing guitar 52 years!! RIP Danny!
Anyone notice Mark O'connor's fiddle solo? Quite nice
I'm tickled by the smiles on Albert and Vince's faces when Danny is playing radiating "Yeah, Danny! Show the audience how this is _done!"_ He does. Magic ensues.
Danny was so underrated that it's tragic that most people have never heard the incredible talent this man possessed. He played jazz, funk, rock, rockabilly, and undefined styles. His medleys were legendary, covering a broad spectrum. Pursue his music.
No matter what, whenever you see three guys like this together, most of us just feel like selling our guitars. These guys make lot of players look like "guitar owners."
Saw this show when it first aired. Still the greatest guitar lineup I’ve ever seen. Like I died and went to b-bender heaven.
When the player becomes one with his instrument....as natural as a beating heart and blinking one's eyes.
Mark O'Connor on fiddle. Great stuff.
Love seeing Albert Lee grinning at how brilliant Danny is.
I'm French and I 've been a country music fan since my teens. My dad listened to a lot of country when I was a kid, and I fell in love with this music. Country music musicians are, IMHO, the best musicians technically I think. This is just crazy when you think about the amount of dedicated work needed to reach this level of mastery! I discovered Danny Gatton years ago when watching videos of Vince Gill on youtube, but he is greatly undrerrated, that's true, and it's a shame. So sad he ended as he did... I never get tired of listening to this!
He took Joe Bonamassa out on the road when he was a teenager. Taught him alot from what Joe said.
You know you got a great band when Vince Gill is the 3rd best guitar player in the band
This is nothing short of incredible. Even Albert Lee, one of the greatest of all-time, seems blown away by Danny's pyrotechnics. Special mention to the fiddler too.
Albert & Vince deserve Guitar Player Medals Of Honor just for having the sheer guts to strap on a guitar on the same stage as Danny Gatton. On his 1st solo, you can see how messed up Vince's head is after Danny Gattling Gun shot up that town. Not that there is any reason to diss on Vince - he is a great, killer guitarist. But clearly the man is scufflin' on that 1st solo, just trying to remember his own name after Danny beat the living hell out of that tune. Hello! Priceless.
Danny Gatton had two speeds: dead stop and balls to the wall. Nobody better.
Love the smile on Albert Lee's face their while he's getting his head cut - no ego there just love of the music!!
Albert is a great guy and he really appreciates Danny's otherworldly playing. Danny was just blazing! It's a real treat seeing those three great guitarists and the great fiddle player absolutely cookin'!
Glad You Mentioned Mark O'Connor just one of the Best Violin-Fiddle Players on Earth ~ Yes I Have This Video and Danny's amp Wasn't Facing in the Correct Direction so his Sound is Somewhat Tinny but His Playing was Awesome ~ RIP Danny Gatton ~ The True Telemaster !
Thanks. I'm not a huge country guy (except when guys like Danny, Albert and Vince are playing their guitars on an uptempo piece). So I don't know anything about Mark O'Connor but he is awesome on this. Re: Danny, I think it's fair to say that if you combined his playing with a tone like Mike Bloomfield's Les Paul tone it would be even more awesome.
To be fair to Albert, this was one of Danny's party pieces. Part of his repertoire for decades, Albert was just having a bash at it. Two of the true greats, equals.
@@bokehintheussr5033
Albert was more technical.
Danny is from another planet amazing talent wow!!
Any guitarist who could humble Albert (& Vince of course) is indeed a formidable force. I 'jammed' with Al almost 50 years ago in London & he was staggeringly fast even then. Danny was gifted beyond measure & actually 'tested' Albert to his limits as evidenced by Al glorious little smile. What a sad loss when Danny 'went'.
Gatton's out of his mind! I had the pleasure of seeing him once. I wish I knew of him sooner...
Whoa .. that stage was stacked with talent.
Love that little pedal steel solo
All of them - Supreme Talents.
Albert Lee is the best in the genre. Perfect in his left and right hands.
Nice single note solo runs by Lee too, but yes Danny Gatton is a very gifted an imaginative guitarist, whose solos are just chalked full of technique and wonderful musicality. After years and years of hearing about him, I am just now exploring and discovering his works and look forward to getting back to my roots.
Please stop calling Danny “underrated”. When he was alive he topped every readers poll and critical survey. He’s the rock star here, although Albert is the smoothest and Vince has the best tone.
Albert is unreal and Vince is a fantastic player but Danny is a million miles out on another planet , he wouldn't even be better now if he lived , he was perfect at everything then
I agree!
Yeah
Al and Vince have have perma Grins on their faces while Danny is riffing.
@jakehadlee I'm glad you noticed that, I thought the same thing. Mark O'Connor is the musicians musician.
Imagine being so good that Vince Gill and Albert Lee are blown away by your picking. Humbled
Danny Gatton is who the masters go to for their Master Class
You never see Albert Lee smile like that. Danny shined brighter then the Gold on his Tele..
C Sablan: Search for 'I Got A Woman' - Chet , Albert and James Burton - Albert enjoyed JB just as much!
awesome stuff from all awesome people and musicians ya just gotta sit back and say arhhhh i wish i could be as good as them
Wow killer guitarist, fiddle was on fire also, great jam!!
Can't recall anyone faster. Absolutely tremendous. What a loss of talent.
If you like fast, check his "Sweet Georgia Brown" at ruclips.net/video/QRasMMoTfoE/видео.html. At 3:27 he goes into overdrive, and at 4:07 goes into warp drive. He's not only fast, but on the mark, not missing a note (I think...).
not just fast but tasty. Albert plays a million notes fast like a machine, Danny nailed the right ones, imop
Ironically, Vince's tone is much like Alberts old tone here. Good ole days of the real early Teles. Albert never sounded the same with the Music Man / Ernie Balls.
I wouldn't mind hearing Albert on a Tele again at all.
The Humbler! WIsh I could have seen him live! What a player!
I never saw him either. Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman and Danny Gatton are the three musicians I'd have most liked to see who are gone.
he was stunning!
In Danny's biography ("Unfinished Business: the life and times of Danny Gatton" by Ralph Heibutzki; if you haven't read it, you should. It's great.) I read that his mother arranged for him to take lessons from the premiere classical guitar instructor in the D.C. area. Danny was in his early teens if I remember. Shortly after, the instructor told Danny's mother that her young 'un was so good that he didn't have anything left to teach him!
I read somewhere that Danny didn't like being a musician.
Danny loved working on his hot rods and was frustrated trying to earn a living in the music bus.
Mark was the best soloist. Clean melodic no slop........
They're all sooo good - but...... Albert was still pretty close to the top of his marvelous game there.
Gatton is as good a picker as I've ever heard.
I think that's true of most of us.
not as good as don rich buckaroo?
Vince Gill and Albert Lee simply played the country scales, it was a safe ground for them and they do that all the time. In fact, Danny played differently, his approach was brave and he had enough skills to get out of the solo in the way that most guitarists could never do. Guitar is not only about the scales, patterns and simple chords, it is something deeper and Danny had it.
Mali Oglasi Srbija well said friend.
Mali Oglasi Srbija
"Playing in the wrong key"
I disagree with you Albert doesn't just play country scales he's a master picker who improvises and never plays the same time twice . Gatton is a legend as well but different styles. Though Albert is the cleanest picker out of all of them and plays with the least amount of effect processing.
I agree Gawain. Albert is phenominal and Mark O'Connor is as well.
Vince gill yes Albert lee is on another level same as gatton. Wanna see some bullshit watch keith burban - brad prasley then you can state a noticeable comparison Vince jill included.
All Danny does is stand and play. No theatrics, no jumping about, no "show". He just plays.
@WGBader I've heard that too. AND he's a great guitarist too...could hold his own with these guys. He played guitar with Stephane Graphelli (sp?) on an album that was fantastic.
Proud to say Danny was a friend and teacher to older brother, accomplished guitarist as well. Danny does own the strongest claim to virtuoso, imo, and a nice guy to younger kid brothers.
Wow! Thanks for sharing this with us...the talent that's on the stage in this is amazing.
...and damn near every picker in Nashville can play with these guys. Absolutely unreal.
@WGBader It's true. Saw him at 14 years old blow away the competition at the Winfield Kansas Flatpicking contest.....the crowd was freaking out halfway through 'Dixie Breakdown', he's that damn good on everything he plays.
IT'S SO GREAT & I DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT HIM & THEM....!? FAR AWAY YES, BUT NOT HEARD AGAIN...TX...TX...TX...
All brilliant but Gatton was a phenom who was also one hell of a fiddle player. Never bettered.
Thank for posting. He was amazing. R.I.P.
Just checked it out...F**KING BADASS!!! Thanks for that recommendation!
How can you get any better than a little friendly "showing off " between friends. ?
James Burton invented it, these boys mastered it. Good gawd, y’all!
To 99butcher99: I'm sorry you don't hear in Danny what so many others do. Honest. Danny was a phenomenal guitarist, excelling at jazz, rockabilly, country, and other genres. He was fast, clean, melodic, and tasteful. Vince is good, sure, but Danny was in the stratosphere, IMHO.
Cont'd:
to have stacked the deck in Vince Gill's favor. He was their Golden Boy at the time, bringing in lots of revenue for the fat cats. Nonetheless, I'm happy this show found its way onto RUclips. Thanks to all who have posted them!
AWESOME................and so love Vince Gill
THANK YOU SO MUCH. IT'S LIKE WATCHING A HOLY TRINITY.
And I'm sure I read somewhere that Chet Atkins thought Mark O'Conner was possibly the greatest musician he'd ever known. But then he also said the same thing about Tommy E and Itzak Perlman. This from a guy who probably inspired more guitarist than anyone during his lifetime. Damn, I ain't gonna get no sleep tonite.
The Master! Danny was the man. Rip dude. X
You can tell when Albert Lee smiles, it’s that kind of smile like, “Holy shit, Danny Gatton is such a good player I love this stuff....oh shit I have to play lead guitar after Danny Gatton. Goddammit, how does he do that???”
Boy Vince,Danny and Albert sure is tearin' this thing up i wished i was there 4th guitarist!!!!
Leo Fender is surely smiling down on this!
Agreed. But I think Albert should have kept his telecaster. Just my opinion but he sounded stronger. And I'm a telecaster fan of course. Also notice the amps. I see a couple of twin reverbs and at least one Music Man.. Leo would be proud : )
I agree with this completely. As a big fan of Albert's I would love to see him just once ditch that red Music Man and play something else - ANYTHING else. I guarantee you the Music Man amp is Albert's too.
Danny has the Tele so well covered Albert's MM signature has room to breathe. Inspired.
I'd love to hear Albert play a different guitar just once. He still uses that same setup every time I hear him.
I saw this show when it appeared live on TV. When Danny took off I hit the record button on the VCR. Got the tape hiding somewhere safe, I couldn't believe it when I first saw it so I played it back about 10 times the same day. I only knew about Vince at the time and thought, who are those other 2 guys? All 3 sound different and uniquely special. Sad to hear Danny pasted away, but congrats to Vince getting a Star on the walk of Fame in Hollywood.
Awesome!
I agree about the tone; I wish Danny had picked something different. Too late now. As far as playing goes, I can't read Vince's mind, but I've seen a lot of Albert's videos on RUclips, and this is the only one where I can recall seeing him grinning the way he does here. Rough translation: "Holy smoke, this guy's astonishing, and I'm tickled to death to be playing with him!!!!"
Brent Rowan was playing lines in the background. He was outstanding for the entire run of this show. He is a superstar. No one ever gave him the credit he truly deserved.
Bill Branch Vince Gill was playing lines in the background Brent Rowan wasn't on this show.
Freaking awesome!!!
For tone and taste, give me Bill Kirchen.....but all these guys are so out of this world, what can you say?
No need to say how good these guitarists are but hey isn't Mark great on that fiddle. Thanks.
+strawman8 Amen!
strawman8 YOU LIBERALS ARE FUCKING TRASH!!!!
He’s a hell of a guitarist too: ruclips.net/video/pqn1TIb33ug/видео.html
Incredible. Can you imagine following Danny Gatton and not sounding out of place at all?!
Mark is one of the best in the world- he’ll be the first to tell ya.
Vince gill is a monster musician Jonzo
Gatton had so much more going on in his playing, it was crazy. The other two dudes are fine players, way better than me, just in awe of what was able to to do with a guitar, no matter the style. Let’s enjoy what we have if him to listen to!
Hey WG, I feel the same way. Been playing for 40 years and there's just no way I'll ever come close to Danny, Roy or any of them boys. I reckon it's because they were from a different planet. Oh well, we can still listen, watch and enjoy!
Semplicemente mostruosi !! STRATOSFERICI !!
Great choice Pickmaster, my roommates love this. Thanks
All great players. No reason to have to rate one over the other, but my vote would be for Albert Lee. Then there's Mark O'Connor. Nice steel player.
Brian Hanson: the steely is John Haughy (not sure about the spelling) he often worked with Vince.
I think it's John Hughey. Anyway, he was a big session player. He was all over Dickey Betts' album Highway Call ( with Vassar Clements on fiddle!).
Any guitarist who gets on stage with Danny has got to have balls of steel and be on top form because Danny can make any guitarist in the world look like an amateur
Gatton was a monster. RIP Danny.
this is the best so ever
un gran maestro del picking
brilliant,
love this
Vince # 1
I've got this whole show on tape. I'll upload it soon.
that smile of Lee's is saying " that Danny can sure play"
well get after it man!
You can find plenty of Danny online by googling sugarmegs and tela . Search for Gatton to find shows he did with others. Most have set lists, all are downloadable.
ALBERT IS THE KING
To hunterv41: Wikipedia has a good article about Mark. Supposedly when he was a teen he won so many competitions that the sponsors asked him to stop entering and start judging. I don't know if this is true, but it wouldn't surprise me.
They instituted what has become known as the Mark O’Connor Rule: if you win a contest 3 years in a row, you have to sit out a year. They never thought they needed to do that before he came along.
Attended a solo recital of his when he was about 14-15. He’d already won national championships in fiddle and flat picking. Astounding.
RIP
That would be fantastic. Thanks!
I notice Vince Gill and Danny Hatton play a lot alike. Danny is good but Vince can hold his own with anyone.
This is so true. Danny´s tone is too violent. I´ve been saying that for a long time. I wish I would have produced him before he checked out from here.
I love Danny Gatton's playing so much I actually skip right through the playing of an undeniable legend, Albert Lee lol
Danny won hands down but the others are pretty damn good.
No Need to say. You are right🎸
Wow! Ear candy deluxe! Nice.
Prime Abert Lee no one compares.
Oh man!
You have officially been humbled.
I remember seeing this on TV long ago. Watching it now, my opinion hasn't changed. All 3 are great but I still prefer Albert and Vince's playing and tone to Danny's.
as a novice player they all sound great to me Can u really say 1 is better than the other? maybe u can I don't know
Mirror mirror on the wall who are the baddest cats of all? Well there right here on this video son! Now stop bothering the mirror with silly questions🙊
I have a Danny Gatton Tribute page on Facebook. My brother was his drummer for 18 years. Please go to his page and "like"......thank you so much.
greytdog57
He deserved better. SRV was HOT and probably took away much of his spotlight.
I Like to see a SRV/Danny Gatton blues smoke off.
