Bought it for 45 000 $ CAN last year, it's now worth 30 000 $ CAN on the market and any dealer won't give you more than 25 000 $ CAN for the very same car, 20 000km later. Don't drive on break mode (B) on the back roads or on the highway. As soon as you take your foot off the accelerator, break mode is like throwing the anchor. Your brake lights will activate and you'll cause some funny reactions from the drive behind you. Plus, it'll take more energy to drive on B mode because you'll have to hit the gas to get back to speed. I default to D1 (first state of regen) as soon as I leave town. Other than that, it really is a reliable, fun, nimble car. Perfect around town, drives like a charm on the country back roads. For a second car that's in the driveway for grocery and get the kids to school, it's close from perfection.

Thanks for the video. I've had an e-Golf since 2015 and it is good and bad. The 'good' is that it drives well and is well built. The 'bad' is that it is unreliable and VERY expensive to run and maintain. Mine has only done 47,000 miles and been 'serviced' by a VW main dealer until October 2021 so the software has always been updated. The range has dropped from c.100 miles to c.75 miles. It goes through tyres every 15,000 miles because it is heavy and tyre pressures are 40+ psi. The charging cable packed up within two years - new ones are c.£100 and it's been through three since new. No apparent reason why they stop working - they just do. The charging port is unreliable, not releasing the charging plug on several occasions - resulting in three AA recoveries and two dealer visits. The ABS sensor and rear wheel bearings needed replacing in October 2021 at a cost of over £600. Last week, the in-built AC charger blew up and I'm awaiting a cost but the VW part alone is £1,100! The problem with electric cars is that very few people know how to service or repair them - including the main dealers - and when they do need repairing, the cost is astronomical. I'm waiting for the ECU to go - that costs a cool £2,750 for the part alone! Needless to say the car is being sold and I'll buy a petrol engined Golf to replace it.

Greetings from Portugal! Love to seeu your videos... Do you think the car (or most electric cars) will be worth anything after 10 years of usage and probably needing to replace the batteries? It is one of the scariest factors for me when thinking about buying an electric...
In Romania you get back 9500 euro and 0% annual taxation when you buy an electric. I bought this car for a total of 25k full options on a company (VAT deductible). The cost foe running 100km is about 4 euros if you charge only at night (electricity very cheap after 10pm with a special paying plan). So worth as city / suburban car. And you start from a traffic light ALWAYS first no matter what other combustion car sits next to you :))))
Why is nobody testing these electric cars how they handle with 4 persons inside and/or full boot, like when you travel with the family, +300kg battery, and see the efficiency as well.
I was going to order the id3 but after looking at one of these and test driving both I really enjoy the egolf. Also that waiting list for the id3 is ridiculous. Over 9 months so I brought the egolf
It doesn’t really work out from what I understand. Solar panels are really heavy which means the car consumes more fuel, and the surface area on the top of the car isn’t large enough to generate a significant amount of electricity
So, the golf is 31k, has a range of 140miles, takes ages to chagere and is, well, the most boring car on the planet. Tesla model 3 costs just shy of 40k, 250miles of range, supercharging, regular updates and is sexy and classy as hell. I'd rather pay 9k extra for the tesla. If you're short on cash though, stick with a used diesel for now.
I think you should take many other parameters into consideration when reviewing ev’s. What is the charging network like for the given vehicle, is the battery heated and cooled, the plug on the front of evs typically get snow in them or freeze during winter time, can the ev in question fit a toe hook, what is the expected battery degredation over time, etc.
You must be from US. All EVs sold in Europe are of same plug type and can be charged in any station. Thanks to our everybody's hated EU setting rules. Brexit happened, but EU rules still affect e plugs in Britain lolz. And while your other comments are very valid it doesn't really matter that much on UKs roads where it's neither too hot nor too cold - I guess the reason why it was not mentioned.
fake exhaust is there for body parts' unification and interchangeability I suppose. which is a good thing if you plan to use the car more than a test drive
In the Netherlands, currently Volkswagen offers a private leasing tariff of 299 a month. Which is makes it pretty interesting; since Peugeot and Mini are asking a whopping 499 for their electric vehicles. They are no doubt better EVs, but not 200-EUR-per-month better EV's. Since the regular catalogue price is roughly the same (around ~35k in EUR) you know where the surplus in money goes: directly towards the brand's profit margin.
@@Blackmamba12345 Thats bcs most people don't understand electric, yet. Leafs have the worst resale of all time bcs they have 10-20 miles total range after 5 years.

As a general rule, the charging time communicated by the manufacturers will be affected by the weather conditions outside, the battery health status for used cars, and the type of charging station that you find on the road to use... I don't see many people talking about this lately... Batteries can overheat in very hot weather even with normal driving and so do the cables and inside components. And make sure when you buy a new car that you get the Fast Charge option so you don't wait for hours for a complete charge and the extra heating system for the batteries, otherwise it's not worth the money.. the fuel range is gona drop dead.
Can’t really compare it to a lot of other electric cars cause they’re designed as an electric car from the ground up, that why they can do more on a charge.

Bro, why are you reviewing a product at the end of it's life-cycle that will be discontinued anyway?!
discounts
Greg M massive discounts when they have dozens sitting around gathering dust.
@@Sto79Be There's quite a lot of stock, and huge discounts about on the egolf at the moment. not sure where it's all come from tbh, must have had some batteries kicking about somewhere they needed to shift.
I had the car for 24 hours, so the real distance is dependent on the weather conditions . Fully charged 101 miles on 12 degrees in outside. 45 minutes charging give you 131 miles but when temperatures in outside is below 10 degrees after driving 2 miles my range go down to 118 miles.
In the morning from 108 miles with outside temperature 1.5 degrees after 1.5 miles the range drop down to 95 miles. So my journey of 85 miles I did on eco+ mode without heating in f...cold car. Don't waist your money for this car.
This golf is used in my country from the police departament and they look amazing
so the drastically falling range at high speeds is brilliant for safety 👍🔌
when is the new peugeot 208 review coming?

If VW had made an eSportwagen Golf, the extra length could have allowed for a larger battery with a range of well over 200 miles.
Should've done the blue in green for their record breaking emissions
144 miles range, what about the real world range, might be about 100 miles. My polluting diesel can do 500/600 miles and takes a few minutes to top up. Problem is it's killing 40,000 people prematurely in the uk. So what should I do? Answers on a postcard.
0:10 beautiful shot!
The fact you have to have a empty boot to get the charge cable would do my head in
i would go for the GTE though, honestly the best golf available

Do you think the car (or most electric cars) will be worth anything after 10 years of usage and probably needing to replace the batteries? It is one of the scariest factors for me when thinking about buying an electric...
I think the most mental thing is.... his name is only spelled with one "T"???
Like a small carpet 🤣
"Mat Watson" has two T's in it...
@@carwow that's not how it works
@@carwow According to his surname, he should be presenting a TV Guide show.
It's not even a name
It's available in Germany since 5 years. I little late for a review haha especially with the ID3 in the line.
The e-golf looks much better than the ID3.
6:35 that should read 36 kWh.
Easy way to remember.
kWh = Storage
kW = power
@@FrozenDung I've seen some car spec sheets with the same mistake. It's not that hard
Hi Mat. Keep up the great work ❤️
In Romania you get back 9500 euro and 0% annual taxation when you buy an electric.
Could you do a video on the golf GTE in comparison please?
Why is nobody testing these electric cars how they handle with 4 persons inside and/or full boot, like when you travel with the family, +300kg battery, and see the efficiency as well.
Wouldn't it be cool if smart-designed, effectivenes-oriented wheels where also offered with non-electric cars?
They look dreadful though lol
In Germany this thing now only costs around 20k. After seeing the price for the new ID3, people are gonna start looking at this car again.
I was going to order the id3 but after looking at one of these and test driving both I really enjoy the egolf. Also that waiting list for the id3 is ridiculous. Over 9 months so I brought the egolf
@@kingken0460 how do you find the egolf, quite interested in one as a second car for daily town driving?

I am getting this e-Golf in februari. I cannot wait!
Why they don't make electric car with a sun roof that double as a solar panel to charge the battery.
Nissan leaf has this option as extra with small solar panel on back spoiler
It doesn’t really work out from what I understand. Solar panels are really heavy which means the car consumes more fuel, and the surface area on the top of the car isn’t large enough to generate a significant amount of electricity
1. Too heavy
2. Too expensive
3. Too little usage / effectiveness
The existing technology is not efficient enough for that. We're talking about maybe an extra 5-10km in range for a whole day in the sun.
Hey we all live you reviews 🥰🥰 want to see you reach 5 million
Errr, same here!!
@@sk-sm9sh Well, aside from Tesla. They use the same plug, but use a software lock that prevents other cars from using Superchargers.
Who else love Matt.

Trust me, this still isn’t as good as BMW
‘s iDrive
Sean that’s a given 😂

In 5 years it'll have worse resale than the Leaf, which has the worst resale in history. No one wants a used EV with a dead, $30,000 battery.
@@Blackmamba12345
Thats bcs most people don't understand electric, yet. Leafs have the worst resale of all time bcs they have 10-20 miles total range after 5 years.
@@135iN55 that's wrong. Batteries will improve in the future aswell, but f.e. Tesla gives a guarantee that the Bbattery keeps at least 70% after 8 years
@@fynn6282
Tesla offers no battery capacity warranty whatsoever. They say they'll replace workmanship defects with like capacity. So you will have NO WORSE THAN a 70% degraded battery at the 8 year point, because 70% capacity is considered a fully dead Li-Ion battery. The fail curve is exponential.
Almost 5 years later and they resale for around 15-20k here in Germany.
Need a Carwow review of the MG ZS EV.
Can’t really compare it to a lot of other electric cars cause they’re designed as an electric car from the ground up, that why they can do more on a charge.
7:06 Yep, Mat's mad
Golf looks much better than than the ID3. Sad the mk8 wouldn’t have an electric variant.
Wonder what Americans will call the “motor” on electric cars. Perhaps engines?!
I just call them motors. Plain and simple.
which Americans you mean? Canadiens, Mexicans, Brazilians.....?

engine is a machine with moving part that create motion so using motor or engine would be correct.

25,000 pounds bad for a brand new one? I got a deal at a dealership idk if should or not, btw i dont get any rebates from the government i live in norway they have started cutting all benefits from buying electric since everyone buys electric now (mostly teslas)
What you end up doing ?
Mat: has been in some very, very fast cars.
Also Mat: sits on an electric bike and screams it's fast.
GuiG it would be for english standards as we have a 15.5 mph limit so most of our performance motors would be based around acceleration not overall speed. Also those go cycles are light weight
@@maxnewts fair point
Golf doesn't have an active thermal management system - which means the battery will most likely die in 8-10yrs (range will drop to unusable amount).
