    I bought this for my friend for his birthday as we just moved into a new house and he finally has room for a workshop. The bench was very easy to set up ruclips.net/user/postUgkxyFZUPFEey-PuqsPMxqaykBhgA1LWxFHh They center support is a little difficult to snap in and out of place at first but at least then we know the bench is secure. It was a pleasant surprise when we saw it came with clamps. I apparently missed that in the description. My friend loves the versatility of the bench. Great starter bench for his workshop and easily transportable all over our property. I wish the bench was a little taller but the other features of the bench more than make up for that.

    Its crude, its rough but it works. I don't mean that to be insulting, this is actually more inspiring than most builds I see. I want to start wood working but the high attention to detail and complicated build patterns of most peoples videos is daunting. This is exactly what I needed to see, don't worry about the "perfect" way. Just start by making something that works.

    You coulda made the legs from doubled up 2x4s. Also I’d double up the top. Make it thicker, stronger and heavier.
    Cool project and nice video!!

    • @workshop_edits
      @workshop_edits  5 лет назад +8

      Yup - 4x4s aren't that expensive in my area - but I did recommend using 2x4s to people and doubling up to create the posts - that also actually makes it easier to make the half-lap joints. I considered doubling up the top - but this is more of a work surface than a big bench and it's impossible to move on my own already with all the added weight of tools and hardware so I just kept as is - thanks for watching!

  • @rcud1
    @rcud1 3 года назад +1

    So I ended up using this and making a similar workbench. I only did 8' length and turned out well. I made full lap joints instead of half and only a 2/4 back middle leg.
    I'm going to probably make another one as I want one taller and wider. Probably 40" high and 36" wide, but still 8' long. But one thing I would recommend is leaving a 2" or so front overhang on the top and sides for clamping stuff.

    • @workshop_edits

      Some people just want to bring you down don’t let them. Even though you may have more tools at a higher quality than some people you are totally right that it can be done with basic or less expensive tools. I’m fortunate enough to have my grandfather who has vast woodworking knowledge and an array of tools, but not everyone is that fortunate. Either way all the tools you used can be borrowed or rented and this can be done for a low cost. Thank you for the very informative video, I will be building this bench at a smaller scale for my workshop. I am subscribing and looking forward to more great videos. Cheers!

    I just made a 12' bench using this idea and I love it! I am now starting a 14' version of the same bench and can't wait to finish it and set up my shop. I could have doubled up the 2x4's for the legs , but I liked the idea of the 4x4 posts. Wood glue and the 2 1/2 construction screws have made the bench rock solid. Notching out the posts took the most time, but it was worth it. Thanks for the ideas!

    • @workshop_edits
      @workshop_edits  6 лет назад +3

      Yup - its particularly dangerous to do anything like that when you're crosscutting something much wider than long - bigger sheets of plywood aren't as bad, but things like this are a no no - as it can pinch on the blade, kick back at you, or worst case, drag your hand over the blade.

I’ve been looking for ideas and this is one of the best benches I’ve seen. The only critique I have is the title can be misleading when looking at it from another perspective. Yup. Actually, I've since updated the workbench a ton - replacing the top with a big and heavy clear fir top, swapped the drawer slides for full extension upgrade and rebuilt the drawers, and replace the fronts with maple plywood to tie it together.

      I think you'd like the fronts if you saw them - they are function in that they prevent the drawers from sliding further back than needed and the walnut veneer pops quite nicely against the whole build. Really love the overall weight and functionality of the bench so far - so even if you build something smaller or bigger for your space, you'll love the work surface and storage. Cheers.

      Nice - If you're looking for something a little more functional than a big work surface, I'd lose one set of drawers and use 2x6's for the top so you can have a vice area and add dogholes, etc.

      @@workshop_edits - I am very new to the interesting world of wood working. At the moment I am building a large work bench in which to build model airplanes on the top surface, and store my big power tools on the shelf underneath. I really liked the simplicity of your drawers and I want to add some like that in the future. I will be happy to show you what I have made when I am finished, and be glad to get more tips from you. I have never heard of dog holes before. Any other tips you have are much appreciated. Thanks, and looking forward to seeing more of your projects.

      @@royrosales81 I think if that is your end goal - you can forgo anything but a big working surface and actually use a layer of plywood with then a layer of hardboard on top - that iwll make for a great working surface. From there, you can add measuring tools, a cutting mat for accuracy, and if the top ever gets ruined you can just replace the hardboard all while storing smaller tools in drawers and larger tools below. Seems like a great set up. I think modifying it to make a U shape where you can sit in the middle with three sides might be even more useful so all work surfaces are within an arms reach. Good luck!

    Great vid! Is there an advantage of cutting the grooves into the legs to place the horizontal 2x4 within the grooves? Does this give it more support than just using a butt joint or is this purely just to look nice?

    • @workshop_edits
      @workshop_edits  3 года назад

      Little bit of both. Half laps and dados will have more glue surface after, and recessing just gives it a tighter framing structure. No need tool cut half laps though, just laminate 2x4s together to form the joints

    Would there be any problem with bounding the top as a frame, and then screw the legs on the inside of the corners, instead of dados?

    • @workshop_edits
      @workshop_edits  4 года назад

      I don't see why not - you could also make the dados using 2x4s so no need to even make dado / half lap joint cuts

  • @PainterD54
    @PainterD54 3 года назад

    The 4x4 posts for legs is a bit of overkill in my opinion and a waste of money. You could've mad it much simpler by screwing 2x4s together and saved all that cutting. And two 2x4s are actually stronger than a single piece of wood as in the 4x4.

    Looking to make a small workbench for small crafts since I'm limited on space but want something a little sturdier than pine ply. On a tight budget so do you think 1/2 maple ply would suffice over 3/4?

    • @workshop_edits
      @workshop_edits  5 лет назад

      that could work - or you could just make it out of 2 x 6's - heavier and probably a bit sturdier. Good luck!

    How do you clamp things to your work surface with the drawers in the way? Remove them temporarily?

    • @workshop_edits
      @workshop_edits  5 лет назад

      This bench was never intended for that type of work surface - I usually do that stuff on my outfeed bench which has the ability to do that. That being said, I've since modified this design to have a more robust solid top and removed the drawer all the way to the left to fit a smaller shop vac system which also allows me to clamp down. The alternative is having a big vice, but again, this isn't really a "woodworking bench", more of a workshop benchstop for a big overall work surface (if that makes sense). Best.

    If you dont have datto blades When you cutting your joints cut about 1/2 inches apart 1/8 from finished dimension then break out the chips and finish it of with a chisel youll gain days of life that looks painfull.

    • @workshop_edits

      Ryobi are affordable entry level. I’d start there if you’re on a budget and do combo kits. If you have some money to spend you can’t go wrong with Makita. Ridgid is a decent step up from Ryobi and they have life time warranties.
