Alexi Laiho, frontman and guitarist for melodic death metal band Children of Bodom, took us through his sparse, but powerful, setup before the band’s Nashville show at the Exit/In. A combination of ESP guitars, Marshall amps, and a few Boss pedals help create Laiho’s lightning-fast leads and bone-rattling rhythms.
Laiho tours with a trio of his signature ESP Custom Shop models. “Greeny” and “Scythe,” are both tuned a whole step down from standard and house a single EMG HZ F-H2 passive humbucker and an EMG MM-04 gain boost. The boost is almost always on and is controlled with a simple switch near the volume knob.
“Pinky” is the third ESP that Laiho takes on the road and is tuned to B-F#-B-E-G#-C#. All the guitars are strung with Laiho’s signature set from DR Strings (.010-.056).

Rest in Power, Alexi. One of my favourite rigs ever, and a massive player in the history of metal
I wonder if all the people criticizing this guy's English (too many "you know") realize he's from Finland and fluently conversing in a foreign language... and I wonder how many of those can speak themselves out of a paper bag in any other language besides their own...
so right dude. I can't speak any Finnish so the fact that he tell us his setup in English alone is very good. if people can't get past a few too many 'you knows' then they should go watch something else. I'm just happy to hear about a fantastic guitarist's kit.
I can speak another language and i think his English is shit
+Phvro oh well. he probably doesn't have as much time as you do.
+Phvro are you English?
Oliver James I speak English, French and Pidgin. Fluent in two of them.
They actually got ALEXI, not his tech or something.
Awesome.
+Event Horizon Productions it's usually the actual musicians with PG
Chris Thieblot
ok, but "usually" could technically = 50.00001%
And sometimes if feels like that number, especially when they ONLY say the guitarists name in the title and it's not.
yah, seems like the techs are way more enthusiastic about the gear. cool to see a healthy mix of both
speaks tons for the guy, and you can tell by the way he talks.
down to earth and knows his stuff-
I always knew Alexi was one of the top notch players but i had no idea his rig is THAT small. An Amp, 3 pedals and a guitar with 1 pickup. It takes huge balls to play with gear like this and he is doing it perfectly, while doing the lead vocals as well. My respect for this guy has risen to the sky!
Zac aint much different wah od1 and a chorus
That’s all that is needed and you don’t need the pedals lol
thats how rumors get started. For the record, it has been well documented that his "rig" was def not small. Some people say he actually used the weight of his "rig" to hold those arrow guitars upright in all those interviews where he would be sitting on a stool but not using his hands to hold the guitar while answering a question.
give this guy a break. seems to me he's a huge fan of COB and having a great time interviewing his idol
yea guys!!!!! be nice
absolutely
Leave Britney alone....
stoner haha 4:39
They’re just upset that they can’t meet him
11:06:
"...you know, just so, you know...You know, you never know ! "
- Alexi Laiho, March 2016.
+Hamza Benki Well, that's just you know, you know.
+zika peruz lol
You forgot a you know at the end
Cuz you know he's finnish you know...
+Veini Laakso lol true
"you know" is a typical phrase for non native speakers to give them time to think about the right words...so give this guy a break
Guys from Iron Maiden are native Britons and they are using "you know" just like Alexi :D
He speaks pretty good English for English being his 2nd language.
Hell, I'm American and I say you know a lot lol
Norm Macdonald uses it all the time too who cares ruclips.net/video/2mhUIIhcTb8/видео.html
Have you heard Zakk Wylde speak?
its 2016 and alexi laiho is still painting his nails and rocking a single pickup? awesome to see my childhood hasnt really gone anywhere
hence the "wildchild" moniker
he used neck pickup in the first album

You know come to think of it I wonder if the paint on his nails help him see better when he's shredding on stage
@@SoundwaveMusic22 It definitely helped me, personally, when I was younger and playing live.
The interviewer was so nervous you could tell, but he became more comfortable when he realized how down to earth and nice Alexi is. What a legend.
I'll watch this again with a heavy heart. R.I.P Alexi
Started crying watching this, he seemed like such a nice guy, very humble and down to earth. It’s almost as if when he was on stage he became somebody else, he was so wild and badass.
@@s4mcote One of the best players/composers ever to pick up a guitar. Plus did it while singing and performing. He is inspirational.
What a loss, honestly. I can't fuckin' believe it.
When nordic shred metal invaded the world in the beginning of this century, Alexi was the captain of the ship!! Rest in peace and thank you so much
I feel like many Finnish people may not even realize how integral bands like Children of Bodom were for putting Finland on the map for much of the world. If it weren't for Alexi, I might never know the wonders of Suomi perkele. I now know it to be one of the most Metal countries in the world. Thanks to COB I eventually discovered Korpiklaani, Finntroll, Ensiferum, Rotten Sound, Nightwish, Apocalyptica, Lordi, Wintersun, Moonsorrow. I don't hesitate to say that I digged Bodom's sound the most out of all of them. RIP Alexi!!!
@@amphibeingmcshpongletron5026 never got the notification for your reply, I just ended watching the same video, saw my comment and saw your response!!. Im from central america, the first time I heard about Alexi was from the mouth of Empu from Nightwish, they were in my country on their america tour of wishmaster and me and a couple of friends got to meet the band, me being a guitar player asked him who was his favorite player and without lossing a best he said Alexi!!! They were friends all of those bands hanged with each other… you can even hear nigthwish influences in some cob songs….amazing music they gave us
I am absolutely in disbelief on his passing, Rock in Peace Alexi
Someone described the feeling as "gutted." I'd say that's accurate.
Oh dear! Really?! 😧 I heard of him and his band for the first time only 15 minutes ago, in a twoodfrd video where a preamp is being added to a guitar like his.
@@mightyV444 alcoholism man it sucks
@@johnmcdonald789 - 😔
Alexi sounds like Jesse Pinkman from Breaking bad.
A metalhead Finnish Jesse Pinkman? Fuckin' A dude!
yunes brejan yeah when he doesn't do drugs
Lol
yeah! Marshall cabs , bitch!
The world lost a one in a million human.
The light that burns twice as bright burns half as long.
Farewell, Alexi. You were so, so bright. No shooting stars in my sky tonight.
When a musician only has one pick up on his guitar, only 4 pedals and a simple amp, that's when you know he is truly talented. He does not rely on 100 pedals or the most expensive gear. He just plays and performs well all the time.
His actual ESP guitars are like 5 grand. And that amp is a down payment on a house.
Three pedals😁
He had a Boss Noise Suppresor NS-2 which his tech controlled offstage
Dude acted like he met his childhood hero, gonna miss Alexi a lot.
Really noticed that. He's super giddy and really looks like he's super into everything he's saying.
That's probably why this is one of the best interviews that someone has made to Alexi.
It is a great interview and I'm happy he's done it.
RIP Alexi....Such a massive loss to the guitar and metal community.
I love his simple setup. no bullshit. no digital shit besides his delay. tone one hundred percent from his fingers. THIS is what the best guitarists are made of
It's physically impossible to have your tone 100% in your fingers.
If you don't understand what the phrase is reffering to, then you are more than likely a trash guitar player
Royal James I understand the phrase well enough, and i'm disagreeing heartily. :)
cool, as long as your not wholeheartedly disagreeing with me
Besides a lack of directly stating what I said, I think Alexi more or less is saying it himself about his tone at 7:07 - 7:15
A haircut that would make Ace Ventura proud.
Beautiful human being Alexi Laiho so talented and at the same time so humble person, 0% ego just amazing one of my guitar heroes rest in peace you deserve it
The most laidback legend offstage, but THE most fearsome frontman metal has EVER seen!
RIP Alexi
ever seen Corpsegrinder live? :D
@@ckimmei956 come on now...
nah
Phil Anselmo in his prime is calling
Alexi: You know...
The Interviewer: Gotcha.
And that's pretty much thw whole interview you know...
Gotcha
Yep.
Haha
Veini Laakso Ok gotcha thanks
English is NOT his first language
I'm watching these as background noise and all I can hear is Skwisgaar Skwigelf.
Toki and Skwisgaar's wildchild lol
me too lol I was laughing the whole time
i dont get it
Its dildos....
SHIT I'm not the only one who have noticed it
great band, great guy... pretty terrible interview. constantly interrupting, nothing about cabs/speakers, string brand, picks ... these things would be interesting to me.
Jazz III picks
Jazz 3 (catched one..), signature DR strings I guess..
Fancy seeing you here, haven't seen you on the Duncan forum in a while!
I don't play a lot of metal anymore but I credit Alexi for showing me what was possible on guitar and inspiring me to get better and practice. You'll be missed Alexi...
Guys the interviewer did a great job, obviously you can see he was veery excited interviewing alexi, give him a break. Not everyone is perfect. If you honestly have a massive problem with him then you go and interview someone famous, I would like to see how it'll go for you? Lastly great job from the interviewer keep it up.
Yeah my amp is a 4 channel amp with 3 different modes per channel, but i use basically only one of them. My guitar has only one EMG Pickup, but it's a passive one. Oh and a gain boost, which is turned on all the time. You just have to love this guy. Alexi 😄👍🏻
Cause the Lee Jackson preamp doesn't have a lot of gain but now even though the JVM has pubescent amounts of gain he's just use to having the boost gain in the guitar. Why didn't he try any of the DSL/TSL Marshalls before?
"You know, it's just so 'in your face'"
Peter griffin: " HA! HA! HE SAID IT! HE SAID IT!"
Haha sure, good one brow
I feel like I lost a close relative....this has been a super hard week for me and I’m sure millions of other fans that grew up with Bodom as well. RIP legend....
less bullshit gear to deal with, more time to write epic leads and song parts
5:46
"It's just so, so In Your Face..."
*finger guns*
*Seinfeld slap bass intro*
i play all mids because of Alexi. Rest in peace guitar master.
Rest In Peace I bet him dimebag and Van Halen are rocking together
RIP alexi. Gone but not forgotten
All his tone is from his fingers, that's what makes a great guitar player!Single pickup, marshall, rock'n roll! Simple as that! Not hiding behind tones of processors or all that digital shit. Respect Alexi!
he has the kirk hammett signature wah
I remember seeing him in Albuquerque, he tried to flip his guitar around, pinkie, but the headstock hit the front monitor. But he still rocked that guitar after that. Amazing player to see live, he will be missed
My god the way this interviewer interrupts drives me nuts. Alexi was about to explain how he has adjusted to the Vshape for practice and never got to finish @ 3:41
Yeah that doofus is very hyper and annoying wish he would've just shut up
First heard of CoB when the other guitarist in my high school metal band busted out a copy of Hatebreeder after practice one day. I remember asking “when was this made?” because it sounded like 80’s thrash with synths, and finding out it was only a year or two old really opened my eyes to what these guys overseas were doing at the time. Been a fan for over 22 years now. RIP Alexi!
This guy was a phenomenal musician, such a shame, died so young.
I saw CoB live with lamb of god and megadeth. Best gig ever!
Every other Guitarist: this is my 17-guitar collection with 99 features plus coil split and preamp boost and built in coffee grinder. This is my axe-FX 103948382 set up where every 0001001 brews a cup of espresso. My pedal board takes up 90%of the stage.
Alexi: budget effects pedals, one pickup, one amp on one channel, still better than all the others. RIP
This truly shows that less is more. RIP Wild Child!!!!
At that level nobody is better than anybody,it’s a matter of who’s style you prefer
Even though I was never much into Children of Bodom and the kind of metal they do I still say that Alexi is a damn good guitarist that was taken too early, RIP my dude
Less gain and more volume is really the secret to good tone. With too much gain you lose definition and attack. Unfortunately low gain doesn't sound good by yourself or in low volume situations. You really need to crank an amp up no matter if it's a Marshall style or Mesa style amp. The volume fills up the sound and gives you the saturation and sustain that you lack by turning the gain down below 12 o'clock. Treble pickup only also sounds better when you have a full band behind you.
lecorsaire I would have to agree. Blowing out the preamp on any amp that doesn't have a 100lbs primary transformer is going to flatten all the dynamics that are being created by the combination of the nuances of playing and the gain structure of the amp.
But the jvm red channel has a lot of gain, him setting it at 1 and boosting it still lots of gain, all my modern high gain amps are under 9 oclock and I dont boost
goddammnnn 2021..shit doesn't look that good rn...
REST IN PEACE ALEXI LAIHO... \M/
Rest in peace Alexi 😥😥
decided to watch it again just to count the "you know/don't know"... 61 of them... 1 every 18 seconds
LMAOOOOO WOW
Agree
Hi zakk Wylde!
R.I.P!
I need to see a Jim Root and Alexi Laiho Ya Know off haha
ShredzTheMetalHead yes
And Liam Gallagher "ya know what I mean?" :)
He was so down to earth, so genuine. Rest in peace.
You were a huge inspiration to me musically. Your legendary guitar solos will live on forever. RIP 🙏
Good Lord and Golden Buddha... Interviews are so hit and miss with this guy... On a side note, I need to get back into Bodom.
Rest In Peace Legend \m/
Silent Night Bodom Night
3:11 interesting spring arrangement there
I also thought there were only 2 springs..like wtff
That door creaking at 1:52 is cartoon-esque !
Lol, it is
RIP Alexi ... 2021 off to a grim start
Watching this makes me so sad, he was so humble and an honest soul, and I could cry that we never gonna get the chance to see his brilliant live shows again. Atleast we are going to get a last album by Bodom After Midnight and I also read that they already recorded 3 music videos for it. Anyway, his legacy will never be forgotten! Rest in power, best dude!! ❤️
Keeps it simple but yet one of the best to ever do it rip legend
even when is a simple rig, the most interesting part is that alexi keeps his chorus pedal on ALL THE TIME, nice to know that
+Jacksabbath44 YEP. Saved that information to do some tests. I used to do this back in '09, but leaving the rate on 0 just to give more body to the sound. But not with another settings.
Give it a try with 0 rate. Sounds HUGE

Good bye Alexi you will be missed!
Rip :(
his life was one giant party :-) R.I.P.
Alexi! While I did not grow up with you, I started listening to you in College and even after I had already developed my childhood influences I knew that you were a genius! Rest In Peace!
I love how Alexi says "delay thingy" 😆 Shows his tone comes from mostly just his play style.
R.I.P
Such a legend
RIP Alexi
RIP ALEXI "WILD CHILD" LAIHO .HE WAS THE MAN🤘🏻🖤
Love people who can make minimalism work.
3 pedals. One pickup.
Not what you'd expect from one of the top guitar players in the world, but there you go \m/
REST IN PEACE ALEXI! WE WILL MISS YOU!!!!
This guy was always so sorted about his stuff! R.I.P Alexi, we miss you a lot! 🖤
That was excruciating. "I'm here with Alexi Laiho, I'm going to ask him a bunch of questions and then talk over him whenever he tries to answer." I don't think he got to finish a single sentence!
How could anyone hate pinky?
Still need to spray pink bevels (like them more than the stripey things of alexi) on my new alexi-200 :D
So thankful for videos like this that exist. Never imagined Alexi would go off so quick. Loved him as a talent and as a personal inspiration. RIP wild child \m/
ok which band member did the old eye liner/nail polish prank while he was passed out.and the night before he had to do this classic!
Rest In Power Alexi
I like that he said drop B even though they tune to drop C.
Great respect, very nice person, im very sorry youre not here. You watchin us from somewhere and we know youre ok. Tnx for your playing and inspiration of us all.
Rest in piece
The interviewer tried to break the ice...Alexi is shy and awkward with interviews.
Edit: Was...shy.
R.I.P. Alexi. You're a hero!
Very humble dude. RIP 🙏
R.I.P Alexi
RIP WILDCHILD!
Man that is a setup I can work with. Loved it. Very simple and straight forward. No high end bullshit, no expensive pedalboards you tapdance on it. His guitar has only ONE pickup, for crying out loud! PERFECT for him. I go crazy sometimes with those 4..5.. knobs guitars, 5 way switches and humbucker with coil split. Man..
A good guitar, good amp and 3 pedals.
Another boozehound escapes old age and heads to the dive bar in the sky. I almost died as a drunk when I was in my twenties, and I could have avoided a lot of traumatizing and terrible shit if I didn’t end up sticking around. When my family is gone I’m buying 10,000 gallons of Steel Reserve and drinking until my guts melt like this young hero! RIP Alexi!
Alexi seems like a super down to earth dude. Really bummed I didn't get to see them last year when they went through my area.
Rest in peace, legend.
This interviewer always makes me cringe, no idea why.
+Arttu Hämäläinen Always interrupting when someone he is supposed to interview is talking...For the love of God,shut up once in a while!
+Jerry Should've chosen Rebecca Dirks for this one
+Jerry I've only seen him in this one, and I was trying to be... forgiving. But yeah, I was definitely like "dude, just LET HIM TALK and ramble and say whatever he feels is important to say, damn!"
+Jerry Same haha, I thought 3:16 - 3:35 was cringey, just because I don't know why he was laughing to himself so much.
+Jerry maybe never use the word cringe again and you'll be good
"you know, you know, you know, i don't know, you know" -Alexi Laiho
hahaha He reminds me of James Root.. he's another "You Know" Guy
+Jukkis Pekkis typically non native english speakers use the "you know" phrase to have time to think about how to say things right...best example Marco Minneman
+Slears Some American guys do it too, e.g. Zakk Wylde, hard to get more American than that. And Jim Root is American too.
Gus G. (Greek) is another famous "you know" addict.
+Linh Nguyen (KaWylde Guitarist) Lucas Mann is another "you know" addict but I don't if he is American
+Linh Nguyen (KaWylde Guitarist) Look up a clip called Bootsy Collins basic funk formula, the guy is carpet bombing us with "you knows"
I'm not a huge bodom fan but this guy has killer riffs and ideas. His playing is excellent and sad he died so young. Rip
Rest in Peace Legend !!!😥😥
That guy doesn't look healthy. Did he donate some blood before the interview?
Don't worry, he's gonna look healthier when he is on stage!
Randy Marsh its the lack of alcohol in his veins
Nah he's just Finnish
Randy Marsh - Tey tuk r jerbs!!!!!
Finnish + Too much alcohol = extremely pale skin
Alexi qas the BEST FINNISH GUITARIST/FRONTMAN EVER!!!! Dude spoke 2or 3 different languages and him and Roope played Vivaldis 4Seasons on their guitars!! Alexi truly was a Guitar Master!!
Let Alexi talking and STOP talking for him or interrupt him !!!!
+Korneo54 agreed,
Korneo54 yeah but how will you act if you meet one of your favorite guitarists.
Korneo54 Agreed it was rude
This is how I wish to remember him. Healthy :-) been sad all week. Sigh. RIP sir you did extremely well for such a short life. Smooch 😥😪
"Same configuration as far as pickup and electronics?" ...lets look.... ... a knob.. a pickup..yep ;0
TY Alexi, You Rule 🤘🏼🌎❤️🌎☠️
