    Alexi Laiho, frontman and guitarist for melodic death metal band Children of Bodom, took us through his sparse, but powerful, setup before the band’s Nashville show at the Exit/In. A combination of ESP guitars, Marshall amps, and a few Boss pedals help create Laiho’s lightning-fast leads and bone-rattling rhythms.
    Laiho tours with a trio of his signature ESP Custom Shop models. “Greeny” and “Scythe,” are both tuned a whole step down from standard and house a single EMG HZ F-H2 passive humbucker and an EMG MM-04 gain boost. The boost is almost always on and is controlled with a simple switch near the volume knob.
    “Pinky” is the third ESP that Laiho takes on the road and is tuned to B-F#-B-E-G#-C#. All the guitars are strung with Laiho’s signature set from DR Strings (.010-.056).

    I wonder if all the people criticizing this guy's English (too many "you know") realize he's from Finland and fluently conversing in a foreign language... and I wonder how many of those can speak themselves out of a paper bag in any other language besides their own...

      so right dude. I can't speak any Finnish so the fact that he tell us his setup in English alone is very good. if people can't get past a few too many 'you knows' then they should go watch something else. I'm just happy to hear about a fantastic guitarist's kit.

    I always knew Alexi was one of the top notch players but i had no idea his rig is THAT small. An Amp, 3 pedals and a guitar with 1 pickup. It takes huge balls to play with gear like this and he is doing it perfectly, while doing the lead vocals as well. My respect for this guy has risen to the sky!

      thats how rumors get started. For the record, it has been well documented that his "rig" was def not small. Some people say he actually used the weight of his "rig" to hold those arrow guitars upright in all those interviews where he would be sitting on a stool but not using his hands to hold the guitar while answering a question.

If it weren't for Alexi, I might never know the wonders of Suomi perkele. I now know it to be one of the most Metal countries in the world. Thanks to COB I eventually discovered Korpiklaani, Finntroll, Ensiferum, Rotten Sound, Nightwish, Apocalyptica, Lordi, Wintersun, Moonsorrow. Less gain and more volume is really the secret to good tone. With too much gain you lose definition and attack. Unfortunately low gain doesn't sound good by yourself or in low volume situations. You really need to crank an amp up no matter if it's a Marshall style or Mesa style amp. The volume fills up the sound and gives you the saturation and sustain that you lack by turning the gain down below 12 o'clock. Treble pickup only also sounds better when you have a full band behind you.

    • @graxjpg
      @graxjpg 6 лет назад

      lecorsaire I would have to agree. Blowing out the preamp on any amp that doesn't have a 100lbs primary transformer is going to flatten all the dynamics that are being created by the combination of the nuances of playing and the gain structure of the amp.

    Man that is a setup I can work with. Loved it. Very simple and straight forward. No high end bullshit, no expensive pedalboards you tapdance on it. His guitar has only ONE pickup, for crying out loud! PERFECT for him. I go crazy sometimes with those 4..5.. knobs guitars, 5 way switches and humbucker with coil split. Man..
    A good guitar, good amp and 3 pedals.

    Another boozehound escapes old age and heads to the dive bar in the sky. I almost died as a drunk when I was in my twenties, and I could have avoided a lot of traumatizing and terrible shit if I didn’t end up sticking around. When my family is gone I’m buying 10,000 gallons of Steel Reserve and drinking until my guts melt like this young hero! RIP Alexi!
