Alexi Laiho, frontman and guitarist for melodic death metal band Children of Bodom, took us through his sparse, but powerful, setup before the band’s Nashville show at the Exit/In. A combination of ESP guitars, Marshall amps, and a few Boss pedals help create Laiho’s lightning-fast leads and bone-rattling rhythms.
Laiho tours with a trio of his signature ESP Custom Shop models. “Greeny” and “Scythe,” are both tuned a whole step down from standard and house a single EMG HZ F-H2 passive humbucker and an EMG MM-04 gain boost. The boost is almost always on and is controlled with a simple switch near the volume knob.
“Pinky” is the third ESP that Laiho takes on the road and is tuned to B-F#-B-E-G#-C#. All the guitars are strung with Laiho’s signature set from DR Strings (.010-.056).

I always knew Alexi was one of the top notch players but i had no idea his rig is THAT small. An Amp, 3 pedals and a guitar with 1 pickup. It takes huge balls to play with gear like this and he is doing it perfectly, while doing the lead vocals as well. My respect for this guy has risen to the sky!

thats how rumors get started. For the record, it has been well documented that his "rig" was def not small. Some people say he actually used the weight of his "rig" to hold those arrow guitars upright in all those interviews where he would be sitting on a stool but not using his hands to hold the guitar while answering a question.

It's often simpler than you'd think. I don't know where the idea comes from that players use or hide behind a lot of gear, even though a bunch of them might have a lot of stuff, it's not always all turned on. I mean, at the end of the day, it's always a guitar into an amplifier and a speaker.

I feel like many Finnish people may not even realize how integral bands like Children of Bodom were for putting Finland on the map for much of the world. If it weren't for Alexi, I might never know the wonders of Suomi perkele. I now know it to be one of the most Metal countries in the world. Thanks to COB I eventually discovered Korpiklaani, Finntroll, Ensiferum, Rotten Sound, Nightwish, Apocalyptica, Lordi, Wintersun, Moonsorrow. I don't hesitate to say that I digged Bodom's sound the most out of all of them. RIP Alexi!!!

All his tone is from his fingers, that's what makes a great guitar player!Single pickup, marshall, rock'n roll! Simple as that! Not hiding behind tones of processors or all that digital shit. Respect Alexi!

Yes Perry is a spaz. I love it. I find his genuine enthusiasm and ADHD totally endearing and likeable. He is so passionate and excited about this stuff he can't contain it. The interruptions are worth it in my book. I think the other PG interviewers are great as well.
