Wildchild will live forever in our hearts!! He fucking rocked and was a super nice guy too. I got my boys (10 and 12) listening to Bodom now and they are loving it.
This gear video is pure gold for many of us that chased his tone! A huge influence to an entire generation of metal musicians is an understatement. Forever in our hearts, the original Wild Child!
Great Video, Ola, and thanks for keeping the Legacy alive! Nice to hear you appreciating the Bodom Tracks. To me Alexi and COB is probably what Dime and Pantera means to you. Well prepared and performed!
His black and pink LTD is something I am still chasing all these years. I saw him with one in a Zzounds magazine I used to get back in 2007 and that's what lead me to look up Alexi. CoB immediately became a favorite of mine.
Great tone, hellacious guitar.. Alexi would be stoked! It’s a shame we lost him so soon, would have been so cool to see him on your show man. I also didn’t listen to bodom much growing up, but have recently developed a huge amount of respect and appreciation for his music in recent years. Got to see them live back in 2008 on gigantour at merryweather post pavilion with JFAC, in flames, and megadeth.. extremely grateful for that experience
Absolute chills! Thank you so much for this video Ola I’ll always remember getting my mind blown by this exact tone shaking the whole theatre I was in when Alexi’s sound tech walked his guitar out on stage just prior to their set starting to test chug open C for 10 secs. I never thought I’d quite hear it the same again.
I'm currently rebuilding a BC Rich Avenge using The Halo of Blood EMG pickup that also comes with the active preamp can't wait to get it done and noodle with it
I’m a 54 year thrash semi crappy guitarist who like yourself didn’t listen to them early on, but I’m really glad that I did hear them before I moved on because. The guy was good and had a good time doing what he loved. I happy I can hear it all now. Allways learning new riff etc and boy, was he full of them ! thrash on all. It’s worth the listen. Love ur stuff as well mr.ola. Keep it up. Thanks for all ur work my brother. Peace
RIP Alexi. I wish I got to see him live before he passed. He was always one of my favorites since middle school but I was never big on going to concerts until after the pandemic ended.
Alexi has been my number one inspiration since I discovered Bodom 17 years ago. I finally worked my way up to mastering the solo to Kissing The Shadows earlier this year, definitely the peak of my journey as a guitarist. Incredible that he wrote and recorded that (as well as countless other masterpieces) at such a young age. RIP Wildchild.
I was aware of COB and Alexi as a teen, I really liked his work in the Finnish super group The Local Band and listened to the album “Hexed”… but that was basically it. Until he passed it caught me by surprise like I’m sure everyone else did… dove into their earlier works, it was right up my alley, especially if I was younger lol… it’s a damn shame I didn’t get into them earlier… R.I.P. He did nail it. I would have been curious to hear a side by side of perhaps a stock LTD Arrow or something. He really nailed the COb tone, I wonder how much was in that booster he had installed? Cool show.
You really nailed Alexi's tone! Damn that is sooooo chunky. Your play style and the tone in the intro made me remember of the final solo of Hatebreeder. I'm still get goose bumps when I listen to it. That's a great tribute to a great guitarist gone too soon! Well done Ola.
I remember a few years ago during your live chats heavily recommending COB and you kept saying how they were too “happy” of a sound for you, glad you came around!!! Alexi was a legend of a shredder…
thank you so much for this video Ola. Alexi was my personal hero along with chuck schuldiner. Ever since his passing its never been the same, just like with chuck and dimebag. RIP alexi and all the legends that left us
Good call on getting the Alexi MM-04 booster installed, the midboost is essential for the Alexi sound. Don't be afraid to try different settings with the dipswitches. If I recall correctly, one of his techs mentioned online that he changed the settings around over the years to match different pickups and the 2+4 settings listed in the manual are old.
Aw man, _yeess_ I waited for that one! You really nailed it on this video. Thank you Ola! I'm getting goosebumps when hearing that exact tone. Alexi was the guy who made me want to pick up the guitar.
Great to see you liking COB more. You nailed that tone and playing. By the way, one of the rig run down videos I watched, very simple rig and Alexi told that he had chorus pedal always on interestingly.
When you were talking about od1 and od2 being the same, you might have been thinking about the Joe satriani signature jvm. That was something he requested for his model.
One of my favorite guitarist.. his playing, songwriting, stage presence and authenticity was so inspirational! Great video, and awesome to hear Ola is checking out and enjoying more CoB tracks!!🤟🔥
12+ years ago I was lucky enough to play a $6000 ESP white Alexi model with the grim reaper scythe inlays through a marshall series similar to this one with separate knobs for each channel, this was when Alexi was still playing through a Lee Jackson rack amp or something. the guitar back then might have had some kind of boost or onboard preamp because it was hitting the marshall with lots of gain without having any pedals, the EMG was passive.
Welll .... I must say, after listening with my studio headphones (after Steel Panthers new release) , i t was a pleasure watching this video!! Greet s from Hellgium! (the country in between Holland and France, Germany and England) Lest we forget, Alexi
Got the same guitar, plus the Scythe. Installed the preamp in them both as well. Dialed in just a hint, only to get a bit extra clarity in solos, as the pickups already sounds badass on their own!
I sold my JVM for A Bogner Ecstasy. It was a good choice. But if I was to rebuy a head, it would be a JVM. Channel 3 orange and red were the most amazing saturated goodness, especially with my Les Paul. Underrated metal amp that can do every style. But the Bogner takes the gain staging options and the cutting clarity to a new level. Great vid, Ola. I'm watching you all the time again, and totally diggin' your channel. The OG! And "Needled" is definitely my fav Bodom tune! Memories...of the good ol days...
Seen many covers of COB songs by different guitar players all over youtube but there's that one distinct rusted-tone that Alexi has which I have rarely heard other people have been able to make on their guitars.
Thanks for this video. Alexi was, and is, a national treasure for metal music. Great to see this done and demonstrated. Had one of those preamps installed in a guitar, you can find a good setting, if u mess around with it. Think there's couple videos showing how they affect. It's always a taste thing, anyways.
Hell yea! You opened with Hatecrew Deathroll. That’s one of my warm-up songs, and I also didn’t listen to them back in the day. I just remember when it came out back in the day, I watched Alexi’s Guitar World lessons on it. He was an incredible guitarist!
Damn Ola...you really nailed the tone in that intro. Alexi is one of my guitar hero's and I will miss hearing new music from him. At least he put out a lot of quality music that I can still listen to. He will live on forever in the great music he wrote. RIP Alexi
Awesome video, Ola! It would be sick to see you do one on his preamp setup that he used most of his career too (Lee Jackson GP1000), or even the early guitar setup (Jackson with J50BC pickup and JE1000 gainboost) and maybe see how they compare with this. Love your content man, happy finnish independence day to you.
A lot of his gear, including that white guitar from the thumbnail as well as his amps and pedals were on display in my hometown a month or two ago. Was really cool to see!
you definitely nailed it! obviously you said it is set to his settings but i swear there are a ton of videos with him shredding and nailing those riffs with less gain. obviously he was a master!

Ola I did the same mod to my Alexi model. Except for I did the mod so long ago back in 09 I think. That preamp boost was not really available to the US market so I had to figure out how to order something from Japan. I was never able to afford the real deal ESP but now I think I’m going to have to buy one. Thanks for this video. Any videos about Alexi always bring my spirits up. He was my guitar hero from about the age of 10
RIP Alexi. I was lucky enough to see them twice in a small-ish setting. His guitar tone is INSANE. I actually cannot believe that it's just EMGHZ into a JVM(more or less). It's in the hands, man.
That pre-amp boost does A LOT as Ola says - it’s not really any different than putting an overdrive before the amp like many metal guitarists do, just slightly different. Damn near every good driven guitar tone out there has *something* in between the guitar & amp pushing things - even Brian May of Queen
To be fair you can't really go wrong with a boosted HZ into a JVM, it's just a good combo. Although the JVM is a fairly late development in Alexi's career, he was using some fancy vintage rackmount stuff before that.
The HZ are quite nice an affordable pus, and theres to much gatekeeper mojo around boutique PUs. The HZ have a nice, not oversaturated distorted tones, but instead of emgs actives a usable cleantone. They handle distortion very good. But dont put to much focus on the pus. The cab is more interesting. Celestion greenback. Has more influence than the pickups on the whole sound.
Been sleeping on this one, it was time! hope you enjoy the video! Also Happy Birthday Finland!
Would love to see a cover of “hold your tongue” great song
I dig the video. I’m really impressed with that Marshall
