Ricky Karcher had the wildest debut in MLB history. It was wild in two ways: his complete absence of command, as well as the high stakes situation he was thrust into for the Cincinnati Reds, facing off against the Kansas City Royals on June 12, 2023.
That Reds Royals June 12 2023 matchup was already memorable before Karcher showed up. Salvador Perez hit a late homer to force extras, but TJ Friedl scored in the top of the 10th to put Karcher in a save situation. A real one, mind you, not any of that Wes Littleton Save silliness.
Karcher faced Bobby Witt Jr., Michael Massey, Edward Olivares, and Maikel Garcia in that order. You'll have to watch this episode of Baseball Bits, a Foolish Baseball production, to see if Ricky Karcher can record a Ricky Karcher save in the Ricky Karcher game.

Am I the only one who thought that cat was about to go in the microwave?
what's the price difference of having an ad in front of the video instead of the middle or end? cause I got irrationally annoyed
Factor fucking sucks. Get a better sponsor.
Factor is awesome, I'm not sponsored just love it. Used code for a discount, worth it. No I am not a Factor bot, promise. I am a Mariners fan, keep that in mind lol.
Don't you know it's supposed to be 2:02 cooking time?
Curt Casali should have been credited with the first positional player save in MLB history for that performance
He should get at least half. Maybe he and Ricky can arrange for split custody of the Save. Like Ricky can have it on weekends.
@@FoolishBaseball as long as Ricky promises not to try and teach little Save how to throw a fastball
@@FoolishBaseballevery other weekend
In any case, Stevie Wilkerson already did it in 2019.
@@FoolishBaseball Curt can have the save for one game out of every series. Any day game following a night game, for sure. That sounds about right.
I’m interpreting this as a backdoor baseball bits about Curt Casali, my favorite backup catcher
that’s right
Tomas nido is a far superior backup
@@FoolishBaseball giants are undefeated since we got him back. Coincidence? I think not!
@@masonseymour2455 you got that right!… I was overjoyed when the Giants signed Curt. We desperately needed a legitimate catcher for our guys to throw to.
@@masonseymour2455 Make that undefeated with 4 W in a row !
Is this the greatest catching performance of all-time?
Yep, the catcher should have got credit for the save.
Maybe for a single inning!
Not that I can name a better performance off the top, but would’ve liked to see more picked / blocked sliders in the dirt, in addition to those fastball saves. Ricky was too in command of the slider to make that happen.
Eh, his framing job on those high fastballs could have been better. Gotta be able to steal a strike every now and then!
Mishandling the transfer on the double steal has to count for something negatively though. Still an absolute masterclass
It’s like in little league where a kid can’t throw strikes and the parents are screaming not to swing but the batters get themselves out anyway
As an ump this is miles too relatable
Just when I thought my Sunday couldn't get any better...
It’s not even noon what could have made your Sunday so good before this lol
pregame Baseball Bits before the Sunday afternoon slate

Oh yes! The OOTP youtuber Foolish Bailey finally dropped one of these side hustle videos on his second channel! 😁
My real focus is rebuilding the A’s
@@FoolishBaseball I fear succeeding in that would need Ricky Karcher hitting John Fischer in the noggin
@@vojtechnovacek7776in the words of Lloyd Christmas, so you're telling me there's a chance!?!
I remember Bengals/Sam Hubbard guy being in that spot for all three games of the series. Absolute legend
He was loving (and hating) every pitch
Dude watched baseball like it was a football game
I could imagine him being a guy from Cincy living in KC really wanting to see as much of his favorite team as possible while they were in town.
Is it actually Hubbard?
NO WAY YOU MADE A VIDEO ABOUT MY KING RICKY KARCHER I WAS AT THAT GAME.
it was definitely a game of all time to be at
We found Bengals Guy!
It also can't be overlooked that this game was a part of their 12 game win streak
My brother and I are convinced he was baked out of his mind, figuring he wouldn’t get in, so probs took a gummy to enjoy the time in the bullpen. Then boom… “Karcher you’re going in” “to what?” “The game.” “What game?”
He was absolutely baked if not tripping balls
Great Reds content, Bailey
wow hello major league baseball
Wassup MLB
@@MLB Shh… Bruh..Keep it down. I am trying to watch baseball. I can’t hear it over your ruckus…
"Locked down the save" was pretty generous. 😂
I’m a generous man
I know it probably doesn't mean anything, but I sincerely thank you for keeping your sponsor and not having it be gambling related. The absolute invasion of the sportsbook companies is overwhelming and everybody seems to be jumping on that bandwagon but you.
This one inning still gets talked about occasionally on reds radio. It's legendary.
When a pitcher is that wild with a 99 mph fastball, it must be really tough for even seasoned MLB hitters to be ready to square up actual strikes. I’m sure they’d much rather face a difficult pitcher they know is gonna live in and around the zone.
As a Royals fan, losing to a pitcher that literally cannot find the strikezone is the most 2023 Royals thing to ever 2023.
Thank God for this year.
The offense picked up toward the end of 2023 but they were really disappointing for most of the year
honestly i'd have just tried to give him the yips by making it really obvious i wasn't gonna swing at anything.
@@oldfrendWhen I was in youth league ball I'd always wait for a strike because I had a better chance of walking on 4 pitches than I did of getting a base hit by swinging earlier
@@psymarThis is also my strategy when playing online in MLB The Show 🫠
This is INSANE bro. And he has a 0.3 bWAR just in one game 😂
Baseball Reference WAR has a WPA element for relievers. So he’s getting extra points for being clutch.
For a good reliever, that could mean upwards of 20 WAR in a full season, which is absurd especially given Karcher's, uh, arsenal
0.299 of that should be credited to the catcher lol
Definition of "I don't care how fast you threw ball 4."
He could throw it pretty fast tbf
Finally an upload on the second channel!!!
I do this as a hobby. OOTP is my passion.
@@FoolishBaseball While I'm playing OOTP and setting my sunday lineups, you drop a video. What a vibe. :)
Bengals guy is so relatable especially being by himself
That Curt Casali impression was amazing. It was like Curt was in the room with you.
You wouldn’t guess it from his rugged exterior, but that’s his voice
@FoolishBaseball as a reds fan remember watching this game and thinking how great was to have Curts veterans presence behind dish . I love the Jim Day interview and how the club was so supportive of Ricky.
I remember watching this live. Greatest final inning of baseball and subsequent post-game interview I’ve ever witnessed! As a Reds fan, I’ll never forget the name of Ricky “Wild Thing” Karcher!

As an MGMT fan, this was the highlight of youtibe today
Bailey confirmed MGMT stan
Little Dark Age my fav by them but Congratulations is also a classic
@@FoolishBaseballDid you like Loss of Life?
This wasn't a save this was a full on rescue operation
You got that backwards: Mitch Williams' "Wild Thing" nickname came from the movie, not the other way around.
This was such a trip to watch live. This whole series tbh. It was during our win streak last year I think so we were all already on edge and both marched and the Hubbard jersey guy just made the situation feel so surreal
"Yes bailey" we all say in unison
yes
You always find these amazing and interesting niche scenarios to show us and talk about, thank you Bailey!
Thanks for the kind words!
2:55 the Rapp Snitches Knishes riff caught me so off guard lmfao, glad to learn Bailey has good taste in music
Thanks for making an exclusive video for Sal Frelick, Mr.Bailey
Who’s gonna tell him?
Every Reds fan knows exactly where they were for the Ricky Karcher game
At least he can say he has a MLB appearance. Most guys in the system never come even remotely close accomplishing that dream of theirs. Like 15% of draft picks actually play a major league game and like 1% of those will play 100. And he got the save.
I can’t believe Bailey was going to eat that cat. Thank god for Factor meals.
Shoutout to Bengals Guy for being consistently wrong but sticking to his guns, and shoutout to Curt Casali for preventing anybody from getting seriously injured
There is a crazy game ending similar to this from May 2, 2009 between KC and Minnesota. Long story short, it involves RA Dickey pitching in extra innings, but being forced to only throw two-seam fastballs because Joe Mauer (who had been out the first month of the season with a back injury) had never caught him before. There are multiple walks, a hit batter, and eventually Dickey gets out of the inning when Tony Pena Jr grounds out on a one-handed swing----yes, a one-handed swing. There's a video clip still on RUclips of it. He had come in as a late inning defensive replacement, but injured himself and was forced to swing with one hand completely off the bat. It was the craziest thing ever.
I watched this game live! As a reds fan it was absolutely terrifying but man was it electric
have you ever considered that Karcher must've really hated Casali and wanted him to dig every pitch?
No but now I am considering that
I never thought the legend of Ricky Karcher would be the topic of a video.
This day is forever etched into Reds lore. We love him!
94 MPH "change up" is wild lol.
Just came across this channel and it’s very nearly like having a Jon Bois who only covers baseball and doesn’t do 7-hour documentaries but posts more than a few times a year. Really well done on all of the ones I’ve watched so far!
Babe wake up, new Reds Baseball Bits just dropped.
Reds are hot in the Foolish Universe right now
Just so you know idk why, i haven't gotten any of your videos as a recommendation or in my homepage for at least a year or two. I always have to search you up by name.
But hey much love for the content
This being a crucial win in the reds 2023 12 game win streak is the icing on the cake
I think the fact that MLB’s official RUclips channel always comments on your videos speaks volumes on the quality of your content
Interviewer: 'what is the strike zone?'
Karcher: 'i don't know man'.
0:44 “I like when food tastes good” who doesn’t? 💀
the MGMT level titles, subtle, tasteful
This reminds me of a quote about former Brooklyn Dodgers pitcher Rex Barney. "If the strike zone were high and outside, Rex Barney would be in The Hall of Fame."
Jay Sborz also had a very wild and disastrous debut as his only MLB appearance
Incredible humor in this one, thanks for a great start to the day!
I love that you can get nearly drilled in the face and it’s called a strike on a technicality
Been watching for years, never commented before, but this was great- my favourite baseball bits yet.
Thanks!
Already Monday morning where I am and a mountain of a challenge waiting for me at work.
Thanks to this inspirational video, now I have a solid game plan.
Foolish! Can’t wait for the Luis Gil Baseball Bits!!!!!
The Royals may have been my team but mad respect to the Reds catcher for saving those potential wild pitches.
3 inning saves are my favorite stat in baseball
I’ve tried commenting to get JomBoy to do a breakdown of this outing, but this is MUCH better
The Ricky Karcher experience was Legendary
whoever ran the sponsorblock segments on this video did a great job
The guy likes food
Whatever my Royals did this offseason to improve scouting, they have been successful thus far.
Love the MGMT titles for chapters! Unbelievable how aligned this channel is to my interests lol😂
14:08 Casual Caleb Boushley sighting
Never thought I’d see a video on the only MLB player I’ve got to sign a baseball, Curt Casali
he got the save and was literally unhittable, and he got sent down to AAA for it.
I send and recieve several texts that read "new baseball bits dropped" every time this man posts a video. Excitement!
Please do a video on Daniel Palencia’s MLB debut!!! It was much crazier than this (July 4, 2023 cubs vs brewers)
Loving the little dark age references. Me and Michael is the greatest homoromantic song ever written right next to James.
Originally the song was Me and My Girl but they changed it because they thought it was boring and cheesy
Caleb Boushley mentioned‼️
Brock Stewart’s first career save in 2023 was also a Littleton save in a game that was already over
The MGMT references were the cherry on top of this vid
I’m from cincy and watched this random game live. I’ll never forget the reds twitter post with more likes than the OP saying, “watch karcher was a lot of fun! Pls god never let him pitch again tho”😭
I know it happens now and then, but I'm always stunned when a guy can dot and slider on the corner (even though the point of the pitch is movement), but can't though a fastball in the same area code. Makes you wonder if Chuck Knoblach ever considered spinning it from second base.
Actually… Karcher was released from the Dbacks on June 16, 2024. He pitched 22 innings in Reno, allowed around 30 walks and posted an 8+ ERA.
I got to see Karcher pitch a few weeks ago when the Aces visited the Aviators, pretty cool to see a Baseball Bits about him!
The reds legend Ricky Karcher. I am glad someone made a video on this.
This is an all-timer. Up there with the Not Happy JV vid.
"...and that's the origin story of how Curt Casali became FIFA's top goaltender."
What I find crazy is that he somehow got called up in the first place.
He had an ERA over 9 in AAA. It's not unusual to see guys who perform well in AA jump to the majors and bypass AAA altogether, but a pitcher who does that poorly in AAA should probably be stuck down in A. It's crazy he made it to AAA and even crazier he got called up for 1 MLB appearance.
Guess his slider really left an impression.
This is why starting pitchers being able to pitch 6 innings is huge
My baseball playing days ended at the junior varsity level because the coach only gave me the start to catch our wild fireballer. I got beat all to heck blocking those bouncers.
One of the best parts of the Reds win streak last yer
It’s time to make a video on Stuart Fairchild being one of the most “sneaky fast” players in the mlb today, he’s the only righty in the 95th percentile of sprint speed in the first 5 feet. How is Fairchild getting those first 5 feet quicker then even speedy left handed hitters like De la Cruz, Nolan Jones, and Jaren Duran
An important thing to mention about Wellemeyer's debut save is it was in the 17th inning. Granted, he had a 2 run cushion. But later that same month he entered in the 15th inning of a 0-0 game and pitched 2 innings as the Cubs won 1-0 in 16.
Casali still wakes up in cold sweats over this one.
The Karcher game was an instant legend for Reds fans. Love that it got a video!
I waited til Monday to watch this so I could treat myself to a 15 min break from work
I had Reds moneyline this game as the last leg of a parlay that paid like $300 watching Karcher pitch had me physically ill I still can’t believe they won
The pixel art at the start of the first chapter made me realize that the pixel art on this channel has improved a ton over the past year. The ruddy cheeks look especially good and realistic.
This is why I love Foolish Baseball. You could give me 10,000 guesses what his next video will be about and not once would I ever guess the pride of Walter State Community College Ricky Karchar
watching it live, i remember thinking Casali should've won the gold glove just from this outing alone
John Lannan had my favorite debut. Ejected two batters into his career
Glad we finally have a video immortalizing the greatness of Casali, expecting the hour-long Luke Maile cover piece any day now🙏🏼
That man’s fastball should be considered a deadly weapon and he should have to fill out some paperwork to own and possess a baseball.
Curt Casali died of a heart attack every time Ricky karcher threw a fastball. May he rest in peace 🫡
He’s with Wade Boggs now
Went to high school with Michael Massey. Had some classes together. Great guy
