What a good video analyzing different pitch counts. There’s so much information here that I’m probably gonna have to watch it a few times. Keep crushing it Bailey!!!
This reminds me of the Corey Seager dilemma Corey swings at quite a lot of first pitches, one of the highest in baseball. Pitchers know this, but they also know the disadvantages of starting off 1-0 to a hitter like Seager. What follows is a pick-your-poison and is why good first ball hitters often end up drawing a lot of walks.
13:22 THANK YOU!!!!! Although, I would also argue that a single with a runner on 1st is still more valuable than a walk considering the 31.8% of base runners on first that took extra base(s) on a single in 2023. The only time that the value of singles and walks is truly moot is when the bases are empty.
In situations with fewer than two outs and a runner on first, roughly 12% of PAs end in a double play. If we subtract the 35% of at bats that end in a K, BB, or HR (since you can only hit into a double play on a ball in play) that number goes up to 18%. And it turns out that the double play subtracts roughly twice as many expected runs as 1st and 3rd situations add, which is why the single and walk are roughly equal in value in that situation.
The cutter is a great 'out' pitch. Because it has very little movement, and is only slightly slower than a fastball, hitters swing expecting it to be above where it actually ends up, and arriving before it actually does. You could also compare it to the slider, where it has much less drop and more velocity. It's almost like a 'neutral' pitch that surprises hitters because they are used to four seamers and sliders with movement. I think baseball novices would be able to hit the cutter much more frequently than other pitch types, but for pros it throws them off. Similar to a changeup with barely any movement.
What I’m currently loving about this video (besides everything, since it’s an extra banger even for a Baseball Bits video) is that as a royals fan the Julio/Paul Dejong conversation is hilarious to me because Julio has a 102 OPS+ and his team is chasing the Royals who recently acquired Dejong who has hit well for us and has raised his OPS+ to 100 (135 for us actually). Is Julio the better player, more valuable and contributing more overall even during his worst offensive season so far? Absolutely. But right now their OPS+ is pretty much the same. Anyways. God I love Foolish Baseball videos, my Royals, baseball (and the Mariners. I actually have rooted for them too since I was 10).

I remember David Ortiz being one of the first guys I saw regularly have the green light to swing on 3-0, and he would rake. I realize he didn’t play entirely in pitch tracking era, but I’d be interested to see his stats. I swear I’m not just talking about the ball he hit out of the Tokyo Dome.
If LeMahieu never swings 3-0 then he's probably at a disadvantage because pitchers will only throw him strikes 3-0. It's interesting how players need to balance their strenghts with predictability.
"I could play in the big leagues today if the pitchers weren't allowed to trick me" That's funny considering when the curveball was invented some people were incensed by the deceptive nature of it and didn't think it was in the spirit of the game. How times have changed.
Great delivery. Im kinda new to baseball and this video couldve been pretty basic and still get the point across. But you have solid comedic writing in you which made the vid 10x better. Plus the 16-bit gaming era editing, dope video all around, had to subscribe.
The pie graph is interesting, but does it count 2-2 as an even count or a pitcher's count? Is 3-2 a hitter's count or an even count? The AVG/OBP/SLG table shows 2-2 and 3-2 as obvious pitcher's counts, but it also shows 1-1 and 2-1 as pitcher's counts (below average batting average)! It looks like all 2-strike counts are pitcher's counts, and all 1-strike counts are pitcher's counts except 3-1. The only hitter's count is one in which there are no strikes (or it's 3-1).
Bailey, I'll have you know I was alive in 1988. I was 3 years old. I remember the Kirk Gibson at bat like a highlight. I'm lying about the highlight but not the being alive in 88.
