- More than 10,000 people named Bob have entered the world of sports. Today, there are only nine. Bobs are special people, and in losing them to retirement, we stand to lose more than we might imagine.
P.S. This is the 1930s high school basketball game Jon was talking about, at the 6:38 mark: • The H. V. Porter Films...

"But he was a Bob. He played a note in this symphony. He mattered."
That was unexpectedly motivational.
I teared up a little
When you see a Bob, you help a Bob.
DUDE. the second I scrolled down to the comments and started to read your comment, the guy in the vid literally just started saying the exact same one... I'm scared.
That was the tear jerker
I read this right as he said this, damn.
jon: i'm doing a video about athletes named bob...
me: okay.
jon: it's 42 minutes long
me: i'm listening
jon: and it's part 1
me: i'll clear my schedule
Less bobs and more pedros and javiers. Baseball sucks nowadays.
d h baseball always sucked
d h Other than Pedro Martinez. He’s a god. Everyone else sucks
Plus I'll read and reply to comments below the video
As a Rob, I gotta give it a go, right?
I bet Bob Cyclone had some good stories, I also bet he loved to talk about how he used to be a professional boxer lol
or laundry room Master
This thought is oddly affecting for me. Each Bob touched upon in this project had hundreds, maybe thousands of stories to tell, and we were lucky enough to hear just one.
"Player B tried this reckless maneuver known as 'doing something'"
I laughed WAY more than he probably intended when reading the line.
Whoa dude, he so *reckless*
He'd be off my team if I was the coach. Can't have such a maverick ruining the team chemistry
That was a dangerous game he played
Thank god jons back. I don’t even know what this video is about but I know I’ll love it
Edit: apparently it’s about bob
bob gibson deserves his own shrine labeled the real hall of fame..the fact this god has to settle for the same honor as lesser players is absurd...hes what movies are made about..hes a superhero in sports lol...1.09 era?...and 28 complete games..this dude cant be for real
@Kyle Dunnell I felt much like you just a few months ago. You're in for some trying times.
@Kyle Dunnell Enjoy it while it lasts
hey I know that guy. Bob.
He doesnt really leave. His videos are like an hour long? You think he can do this every week?
Hey everybody, quick story about Bob Cousy in Blue Chips. I got work as a production assistant for an upcoming documentary on the NBA 75th season. We had to interview Bob Cousy, currently in his 90s. He told a ton of stories but he talked about the free throws in blue chips while we were setting up.
According to Bob, he hit 21 in a row between all of the takes. Now i can't confirm it for a fact, but he was very self deferential and humble, not one to brag. So personally I believe him.
that’s amazing man thanks for sharing that story. also awesome you got to work on that i bet it was a great experience
Thats pretty rad
@@famweefood7073You might say it’s Pretty Good.
Thank you for asking. I'd say that's a memory you'll treasure
It sucks having to wait for more Jon Bois. But then Jon delivers these 40+ minutes epics and I can't help but cry in gratitude for the wonders of divine sports writing.
Thank you, Jon. Thank you, SB Nation. Thank you, God.
Agreed
Thank you Bob
Thank you Jon Bob
That third "thank you" was redundant. You already thanked God.
Bring back pretty good
Me: There is no way I'm watching 42 minutes of Bobs
Me 42 Minutes later: I really want to see part 2
I love how he exclusively refers to every bob as "Bob" and never by just their last name. Like when he describes Bob Fitzsimmons vs. Jack Johnson he says "Bob vs. Johnson" instead of "Fitzsimmoms vs. Johnson." It adds yet another layer to the Bob unity
I'm commenting on this to remind you to rewatch the long form Dorktowns and Chart Parties
@@toilet_cleaner_man lol, thank you. Scorigami and History of the Falcons are already in my watch later playlist 😎
I would’ve loved to see a video about the famous Jack’s in history, for obvious reasons. Like “Bob,” most people called “Jack” aren’t Jack on the their birth certificate. Usually “Jo(h)nathan” but instead of John, some go by Jack. Not me, though. The name on my birth certificate is Jack.
People apparently think this is so uncommon I’ve received three separate first paychecks at jobs made out to Jo(h)nathan. I couldn’t cash them, because that’s not me.
Maybe I’m biased (lol) but I feel like I would like the name Jack even if it wasn’t my own. I feel like a special snowflake, in a world of John’s and occasionally James’ masquerading as Jacks? I’m

So I was rewatching this video today, and decided to look up Bob Gibson to see some of what he's been up to since baseball. I found out that he literally died two days ago, on October 2nd, 2020. Rest in peace to one of the greatest pitchers who has ever lived.

One of Bob Cyclone's losses was to Larry Boardman whom had just two fights before going up against him. Larry would then go on to have a 45-10-1 career record, defeat multiple lightweight champions in his career, and peak as the #2 lightweight contender in the world.
Man, I kinda wonder if we might also be in a Larry Emergency
@@jonathannathan1754 quite possibly, it's definitely the same category of once-common-name-turned-comedic. I haven't looked too deeply so the only Larry I'm aware of is Bird, which is a hell of a bar for any other big Larrys in sports to pass.

Lol at Kareem Abdul Ja Bob
Don't forget hockey greats such as Wayne Bobsky.
Also, no mention of Bob Nobobski, who just ended his NBA-career ("National Bob Association") after 21 years at at the Dallas Bobmicks.
Most of those will be in the next part I'm sure. Bob Ruth was overrated.
Don't forget about Michael JorBob
Throughout his life, absolutely nothing and nobody on the planet Earth could stop Bob Gibson.
So they moved he Earth itself.
And that didn't work either.
Rest in Power, Bob.
That's such a badass quote too. I would've never known about Bob Gibson had it not been for Jon, and when he passed that sting hit hard, now knowing what an absolute beast he was.
Remember kids.
If you see any weird baseball outlier statistic, it belongs to Jeff Francouer.
Except 1968.
Those are all Bob Gibson.
Kids still learn about baseball?
2005’s Carlos Silva and his 0.4301 walks/9 begs to differ
jawknives beg not begs
@@rm5surf3r39 shut up
I’d argue Pedro Martinez’s 2000 was an even bigger statistical outlier. He had an ERA of 1.74 pitching in the AL East during the height of the steroid era. His ERA+ that year was 291, on a scale where 100 is average. Meaning, Pedro was almost 3 times better that season than the average pitcher. For reference, the only pitcher to ever record a higher ERA+ was Tim Keefe way back in his rookie year of 1880 when baseball was a completely different game.
I don't know why but that moment at 36:10 where you mention Gibson not having to pitch to the MVP because he WAS the MVP gets me so good, brilliant vid John.
facts
I had to pause the video because I was laughing so hard.
RIP Bob Gibson 1935-2020
Thank you for giving us the greatest season in the history of baseball.
Pedro Martinez 1999 to 2000.
That has legitimate argument for being the greatest along with Gibson.
Remember that Pedro Martinez was throwing up earned run average of 1.6 in an era where the second-best was 3.7, and The League average was five.
Gibson had an excellent season, but he didn't beat the next best pitcher in his League by two runs.
@@paysonfox88 I think there's a difference between the best season by a pitcher in a relative sense versus an objective one. Pedro had the best season compared to everyone else in the league by a greater margin than Bob Gibson. But Bob's underlying stats were still better so I'd say he had the greatest objective season by a pitcher
The fact that he almost died just a few years into his life and turned it into an incredibly fulfilling career in professional sports and an 85 year life is a beautiful distillation of his life, RIP you legend.
@@kadinallan2436 But a relative sense is the only way to judge players from different eras. In a vacuum, yes, Bob Gibson's 1968 season was the best ever, or at least the best in the live ball era (1920-present). But there's a big difference between 1968 and 1999.
"What have we learned? Absolutely Nothing. Less than nothing. That's just the way I like it."

“He was a Bob. He played a note in this symphony. He mattered.” I though that was an awesome way to honor Bob Cyclone.
Jon's lines are absolutely chilling. "Throughout his entire life absolutely nothing and nobody on Earth could stop Bob Gibson, so they moved the Earth itself. And that didn't work, either." Just, damn. Damn. Half way through the vid I was trying to control my laughter and by the end I'm scared.
Imagine this being your job... Jon you are truly living the life.
Let’s be honest though. Not many people have the patience to collect all this data, as well as create the graphics.
@@lakedubois8109 I think there are a lot of people capable of doing those things. But Jon has the power to deliver the story inside the data to us in a groundbreaking, powerful way. He just delivers. Like Gibson did.
Ville Lahti you have a point. Maybe it’s just the fact that I personally can’t see myself doing it haha. You’re right though. Jon has a compelling way of pulling you in like no one I’ve seen before on YT
Most of this job is just looking through incredibly dry lists of statistics. Jon's ability to turn the dry numbers of athletes I've never heard of in sports I'm not a big fan of into compelling narratives is unparalleled.

David Castillo That is a golden comment
I can't explain why, but the part where Jon says that if someone goes by Bob, it's a safe bet that someone really loves them deeply moved me. Something about it just seems so poignant.

The video is entertaining regardless, even in absence of Bob cyclone. Details and tangents like that are why it's truly great.

This reminds me of looking at Google maps at the continent scale then slowly zooming down to some random area and continuing to zoom until you're looking at a neighbourhood you've never seen before. One thing that I appreciate about this video is that it's honest in how you can't really look at the history of men's sports in America, or look at America in general, without the presence of racism pervading it.
this is true, it is also important to consider that the racial issues in the USA are very unique to our great nation, and it’s effectively up to us to prove that the ethnostate is not the ideal living situation. nations like south africa have done great things. but still, do not solve american issues.
