To put a visual on how popular he was, Pedro Martinez made his Phillies debut on August 12th 2009. At the time, if you went to Citizens Bank Park you'd notice the most popular "shir-sey's at the time belonged to Chase Utley, Ryan Howard, and Jimmy Rollins. And outside of maybe Carlos Ruiz, it wasn't even close. I was at his Phillies home debut and there were a few Martinez jerseys here and there. Later in the month, I went to his second Phillies home start and by that point, Pedro Martinez "shir-seys" had taken the top spot over the aforementioned 3......AND IT WASN'T EVEN CLOSE!!! I'm absolutely grateful that I had the opportunity to watch him pitch in person. Even in his final season, Pedro was an absolute thrill and wonder to watch.
As a Red Sox fan, I didn’t watch Pedro until 2004, and he was great. I can imagine if Brayan Bello could become the next Pedro Martinez, since he’s getting pointers by the man himself
Pedro 2000 is the best season a pitcher has ever had and it's not even close. His ERA was less than half of the next best guy in the league. I don't know what more needs to be said.
Pedro & Randy Johnson were pitchers who made hitters think twice. As a Red Sox fan, the time Pedro pitched were our salad days in baseball. Boy, this time was glorious..
Cleveland made some great timed trades to drop players starting to decline (Baerga for Vizcaino and especially Jeff Kent), but they could never quite pull the trigger to get the top of the line starters available (Pedro and Randy Johnson just from the Expos). They did fleece Montreal for Grady Sizemore (would have been a great without unfortunate injuries) and Cliff Lee for Colon....but adding either Pedro or Randy to that 90s team likely would have put them over the top to a World Series win. All respect to them, but the Tribe's pitchers were Dennis Martinez, Orel Hershisher (feisty vets but not dominant), Charles Nagy, (solid) and Chad Ogea (those are the ones I remember and not digging too deep). They did try with Jack McDowell, but he was on the downslope and wouldn't pan out. What putting even Pedro into that lineup (considering Randy was still considered risky/wild even a few years after he went to Seattle - thanks to Nolan Ryan for his advice) would have been impressive. No real hate on the Cleveland front office as they hit more than they missed, and they wouldn't include Jaret Wright in the deal. The seeds of that John Hart front office, and basically the start of analytics, have definitely served the team with an extremely low payroll quite well. Just this year, for instance: Guardians: $1,897,960 per win Yankees: $5,686,946 per win Of course I'd like them to have more money to spend, but they don't and so over the last 30 years they have had to work smarter than teams with higher payrolls just out of necessity.
My all time favorite player and the best pitcher I've ever watched. He dominated everybody during the height of the steroid and live ball era. They all walked away shaking their heads.
It's remarkable how many dominant starters, some of the best ever, pitched through the "steroid era" while looking unbreakable, either in stretches or in great careers. Pedro, Randy Johnson, Clemons, Maddux, Glavine, Smoltz, Schiling. Competitors just find a way to rise to the top. At his peek, none were better than Pedro.
I was born in 83 so this time period was my wheelhouse for baseball. The best pitching Ive seen in my years watching was the 99 and 00 seasons from Pedro. He was borderline actually unhittable. What’s wild about Pedro is that while he was throwing absolute gas in his peak, by the time he went to the Mets he was barely throwing 85-86. Once in a while he’d ramp it up to 90-91, but his velo all but abandoned him by 2005 or so.
