Dwight, you may never read this. But as a kid growing up watching you play was magical. Even though mistakes were made, it doesn’t devalue what you accomplished. I love you doc.
In 1984 and 1985 Dwight Gooden was better than The Franchise Tom Seaver ever was. But Dwight wasn't grounded as Tom was and Dwight lost his way from the sudden success. Plus once Dwight physically matured in his 20's and his body muscled up, he was never quite the same again because he lost the flexibility in his delivery that gave his fastball that premier velocity. Add to this the well-intentioned but detrimental handling of Dwight by pitching coach Mel Stottlemeyer in the latter's attempt to preserve Dwight's arm and career by getting him to throw less pitches and to evolve from a power pitcher to more of a finesse pitcher.
1983,84,85,86,87,88. We're for me some of the most exciting and enjoyable baseball I've ever seen. I'm so thankful that I can watch whole games on RUclips. Baseball, for me, just isn't the same. I don't enjoy watching today's game. The way it's presented and even the new player attitudes. For me, those were the days my friend!
Happy 59th birthday to Dwight Doc Gooden. 11 16. We will remember how we stayed home when the mound was yours. I would love a dollar for every time an announcer would say you were 19. Here we sre 40 years later Enjoy your day
The Mets have just announced that they will retire number 16 for Doc along with number 18 for Darryl Strawberry at two separate points during the 2024 season.
I know it’s not the most popular content on my channel but there are lots of fans who haven’t had a chance to see them because they aren’t in the NY/SNY area.
I was at the parade and do recall the murmurs amongst the fans about Doc not being there. But what a few years we had back then. In my view 85 was the most exciting year of them all even though we got bumped out by the Cardinals. Of course the 86 post season was as intense as it gets!
Dwight looks great in this!.I just watched the old Doc and Darryl documentary and he looked terrible with his sunken checks..Really hope he made his final jump to sobriety. He deserves it!
As a lifelong Giants fan, there were few pitchers I really wanted to see pitch against my giants, but despite the fact that it would probably mean they lose the game, I always wanted to see Gooden at candlestick, and never was lucky enough to. He was magical.
I saw Gooden at Candlestick twice in his prime, they weren't his best games. I believe took a loss and can't remember for sure the second time I saw him the result.
Wow, the 80's eh . What a decade. I remember back then it seemed it was Gooden and Clemens . When I watched sportscast in the evening and he the story was that Gooden wasnt at the parade - as a 16 yr old - i knew it was a drug problem
They go on about Shea in the 70's after the Seaver trade but showing clips from thw Wilpon-zee era in the 80's - the apple in the top hat, bleacher seating in left field etc.. Clubhouse celebration footage was from winning NL East, not the Series.
My favorite player until he broke my heart with drugs. That was a sobering, iconoclastic experience. Dwight could’ve been the greatest pitcher that ever played the game if he had stayed the course. It just sucks. No other way to say it.
The documentary gives the impression that drug use was the only reason Gooden did not have the career he seemed to be destined for. Injuries and overwork at a young age were just as important.
I was about to say the same. The Mets overworked Doc Gooden , as this RUclips video ruclips.net/video/Z1-vTxAUQTk/видео.html documents. Sure, no one should party to excess, but, then, Mickey Mantle hit the ball in the middle out of the park over 500 times.
Yeah okay overworked? Bullshit! Was it being overworked that made him miss the world series parade because he couldn't stop drinking and doing drugs at local bars? He could have done it all,,,but he had a problem and it wasn't being overworked!
Doc had a self esteem issue, the lack of self confidence is most likely what drove him to continue to use cocaine. I've heard that the drug gives you self confidence. He needed a therapist, that could've probably helped him kick the habit while he was still in his prime.
@@MrBmick79 For a guy that talented hiring a shrink to keep him straight would've paid dividends the stadium was sold out on the days he pitched. He was putting up Bob Gibson numbers at 20 years old..
I can't prove this, but history is on my side. A lot of "he could have been" this or that, a 300 game winner, a Hall of Famer, talk inevitability comes up with Gooden's name, and understandably so. However, disagree if you wish, I love the guy, but the high probability, under any circumstances, substances or not, of him topping or duplicating 1985... wasn't going to happen. Not sure exact number, but along with 24 wins, two to four times he went 9 innings, no earned runs, and didn't get the win. The guy ended up with 194 wins. 1985 was an A plus pitching performance, lightning doesn't strike twice. You can't be more dominant.
none of their players were interesting enough?!? and then they show dave KINGMAN!! who has had more with homeruns with a lower batting average than dave kingman?!?

Epic games I echo your thoughts. He kinda broke my teenage heart, but with time comes understanding.... still my hero.

Docs 85 season will never be done again
Good job. I ate slept drank baseball back then and he was my idol. I got a chance to meet him at the ‘97 ESPYS. What an honor.
I never knew how humble Doc is. I should have known it. When you have a cannon attached to your shoulder, you know your the man.
Doc will always be the man !

From a Montréal Expos fan! Thank you DOC! Merci❤

Doc Gooden is the best pitcher l ever watched chop down trees. ❤
Love this...love when you upload sny specials

Saw him Pitch live vs Cubs in 1986. Mets won 7-6 in extras. Gooden got a ND.
A truly great pitcher and OG 🐐 🧡⚾️💙

he was doing blow
It was such a small window but it felt so epic.
This brings back some great memories!
I would gladly donate a kidney just to hang out with Dwight Gooden for a day.
I would not go that far
Dwight looks great in this!.I just watched the old Doc and Darryl documentary and he looked terrible with his sunken checks..Really hope he made his final jump to sobriety. He deserves it!
Not a met fan but one of my favorites. I watched his no hitter pitch for pitch in 96.
My late father was a big Mets fan🧡🤍💙. Rest In Peace daddy ❤.

Great Video 💪🏾💯
One Hall of Fame pitcher once said that he would rather have Dwights future than his own career.
I think seaver said he wish he had his curve
28:25 exactly Ron. It was Dwight Gooden’s year.
I've met Dwight Gooden , Good man😊

He's not the first , I thought he was going to be great as well, I was disappointed he would have won 300 games no problem
@@christophernickerson8225
Easily
@@MaximusWolfe I agree brother, a lot of players would have had better stats including Darryl strawberry
Did an interview with vlad saying he was in queensbridge projects getting high watching the parade on tv that he was supposed to be present for
@@laphonz He went on VLAD????? dammm
What a tragedy. That's all I can say.
If Doc is not the best, he's definitely one of the best of the best. Whoever made this documentary is very far from the best 🖕🏿

Yea. Mel and Davey both
I disagree. They worked pitchers harder in the 50s and 60s. Cocaine, and alcohol, are literal poison on the body.
💯 anyone who witnessed the Mets at that time knows the truth.

can you imagine if the front office would've been able to take care of their investment? A sports shrink would've definitely kept him grounded.

Doc should of won the 1984 cy young award. Ratcliff should not have won’t it. Can’t convince me other wise
Ratliff??? lol

Should have titled it the Great Doctor.
Keith Hernandez was a G
Keith should have been in the HOF a long time ago.
Why does a 18 year old need to strike out 300 hitters in A ball
none of their players were interesting enough?!? and then they show dave KINGMAN!! who has had more with homeruns with a lower batting average than dave kingman?!?
Nobody could hit that curvebal. He would have been a HOFer.
KH moralizing is rich

He was excellent for a few seasons but certainly does not deserve to have his number retired. It cheapens the honor.
Not true. He is excellent
Strongly disagree
