Hey Splatty noticed you changed the way you made your titles recently. Not sure if you did it to get more views but personally I'd appreciate if you also include the name of the game in the title. It makes it hard to look back on your past videos if I'm searching for a specific game.
Edit: You don't have to change your titling style to work with the algorhythm you can have a space and then add the title of the game there.
100% agreed. I don't like the new title changes. The turn to clickbaity is sad to see. I understand why it happens, but I respected Splattercat for not going clickbait. But... it's a business I guess.
@@JamesMowery I think he can still keep the new video titling style I just want him to include the actual game in the title so we know what game is being looked at.
Seconded - totally fine to stroke the algorithm, but better to keep the game name in if possible: "Yada yada algorithm candy - game name"
Its a light clickbait
Agree 100%
Clickbait titles get old fast, would like to stay subscribed.
Agreed. And their resurgence in the last few months is saddening.
This is basically They are Billions meets Creeper World. Creeper World is an amazing game if you need a Tower defense style RTS and you enjoy seeing a developer make incremental improvements as every game is released. One of my favorite chill RTS where time and resources isn't the challenge, the challenge is entirely your defence against a flowing sea of goo that is moving to swallow your base given the chance
I don't see the creeper world influence at all. This is literally just a TAB clone.
I generally play games while listening to your breakdowns of upcoming ones. Hilariously enough, I was playing TAB while watching this video. It truly is an economics game with a side of zombie killing. Thanks for putting this on my radar.
Way back when, it was Ground Control and the lkes who stood out by making real time strategy without economics. In others, it was the norm since Dune to have some sort of battlefield economy system. Attacking a players economy was often more important than destroying units.
Vampire Survivors and They Are Billions are on way different levels of implementation complexity; not too surprising that many didn't try clones on par with TAB. A moderately experienced dev can build the core loop of vampire survivors in a week with how good it is depending on how much pizazz, polish, and content gets added in. TAB could take months to get a core loop playable with minimal content and adding additional features and systems can be just as significant.
Also Vampire Survivors is pretty much its own genre, with its own rules.
They are Billions is a RTS thus needs to adhere to many quality of life improvements done in decades and rules established by big game changer RTS over the decades. I still praise They Are Billions' RTS qualities, like having the option to patrol without moving away from the path and patrol and chase enemies across the fabric of space and time. Meanwhile some RTS are having problems implementing CTRL+1 grouping.
I played Tempest Rising and I got fucking frustrated that you can't make your units be passive or aggressive, they were just standing around getting buttfucked needing my direct commands...
i would disagree on the months for a playable core loop, but a lot more goes into making something people would play a second round of, and more to make it robust enough to survive procgen'd maps.
@@BigHalfSteps not really, it's just a top down shooter, ultimately. TAB RTS is as different from normal RTS as VS is from normal top down shooters
Well, "They are billions" required one to play in a *very* specific way to be successful and I guess many people (myself included) just don't like it when their freedom is taken from them.
I wouldn't say that is true. There were definitely ways to min/max for the best success but that is true for every game. You weren't ever really forced one way or the other.
Love the artstyle here. And glad RTS is being kept alive as a genre. Edit: To the team. Please put this on GOG.
This isn't RTS really.
I think the reason "The are billions" did not start a genre, is that there is too little way to diversify from the base formula.
Vampire Survivors meanwhile allows a lot of modification form the baseline.
Clones suffer from a inverted uncanny valley effect: If they have to little difference to the original, they come across as pale immitation. If they have too much difference, they might loose what makes the original work.
TaB simply doesn't leave a lot of room to diversify the formula. VS does.
It did to a lesser extent. There are several so called clones that are somewhat promising.
Game looks promising but the graphics especially spaceship antfarm graphics are just fucking mud. This would give me headaches for days. Needs a little more work on that area.
youtube is considering this game as starcraft rofl
My ocd was going nuts because the belts weren’t facing the direction they were going. Like it’s a small thing in a game that looks good but my god my brain just can’t focus on anything other then that
This is what happens with contractors, they build belts 90 degrees off to require the longest belts possible to inflate costs
I'm glad it's not just me, it was really bugging me
I normally only watch on my TV but this was so good i had to hop the pc and comment. We need more of this!!!! I'm not a huge fan of the classic graphics but this is what i want to play. Thanks for featuring.
This game looks like fun, but those conveyor belts going sideways is annoying me to no end.
You had me at factorio x they are billions.
You can see the TAB gameplay influence heavily. The graphics honesty remind me of civ 2 test of time. The hero mechanic is homm3. There's a lot going on here. Ambitious is how I'd describe. Hopefully devs can deliver because it looks really fun.
There's definitely a Creeper World element to this and I wouldn't be surprised if this is a spiritual successor to the series.
@@cmcrisp42 Yea no. Nothing like creeper world at all.
I read that as From Glory to God at first
Please put the game title in the thumbnail mate.
Oh man, this looks so cool. Aesthetically it's as if taken straight out of the early 00s (edit: probably even before that, but that'd be before my time :D), and I've been meaning to play TRB for like a year now, but never felt much of a pull to make it happen. Will definitely be watching this one.
Earlier than that, my friend. The graphics, animation and pacing are distinctly late 8-bit to early 16-bit quality, placing it squarely in the '80s.
Yea I played games in the early 00's. I want to play games in 2024. I want my graphics card to actually turn on when I launch a game. There is something to be said for aesthetic design and choice but this whole 8bit nonsense is getting old fast and its just lazy at this point.
@@rekrn12345 That's ok. You've got to figure out what you like, and that can shift from time to time, too. I get into old-school-looking games often but after a while can't even look at one... until I can again 😅But yeah the aesthetic styles do tend to get overused after a while, sometimes it's just budget limitations, sometimes people get too lazy (similarly to gameplay which is almost copy-paste in many cases).
"There's a million billion Vampire Survivors knockoffs... I guess cause they're easier to make"
As someone developing one of those "horde survivor" games I feel offended. But yeah they're easier to make LMAO
But not THAT much easier, it's like 1.5 years of dev versus 4-5 and as a solo dev there isn't much you can do to see through a 4-5 year dev cycle.
I am ridiculously excited for Age of Darkness 1.0.
They finally added unit formations!
Bad game ughh
They just released a beta build with more commanders, features, and a working lab. It's worth a revisit.
Cool concept but as someone who was there when Pong, Space Invaders, Asteroids, Personal PCs and the like first came out and Arcades still weren't a thing.
I have no desire to be taken back to those graphics.
This game may be cool if all you have access to is a potato PC but as someone sitting here with a rig I invested over 3k into, it's like why?
Anyway thanks Splat for the heads up on this one.
God Bless...
Yeah, as a fellow survivor of the graphical dark days, these 'pixel-art' and 'retro-gaming' poseurs are a bit of a slap in the face, similar to how people with perfect vision wearing fake glasses is to people with poor eyesight.
Still, if it's some sort of legit limitation keeping the graphics simple (budget, file size, dev's technical skill, etc.), then I won't really begrudge it. I may strongly prefer more refined visuals, but so long as I can easily tell what's going on, it ain't a deal-breaker. This game has a little way to go on that front, though.
Side note: Arcades, as we know them today, were a thing before your parents were born. The only difference is the amusement machines that dominated them evolved--from manual and mechanical to electro-mechanical to electronic and finally CPU-based.
@@ItsMrAssholeToYou True but the arcades you speak of were normally affiliated with gambling as well. I was speaking more the the Video Game Arcades that used to be in every mall and sometimes as stand alone very early on.
Since my parents were born in or around WWII and those arcades you speak of were from the 20's and 30's then technically you're correct.
You are 100% right. There is something to be said for aesthetic choice and design. At this point its just lazy and annoying. The tools exist for free for people to make games with graphics that exist in the current century. I am kinda over this laziness at this point.
We all wanted to see the cyborgs, I wonder if the spaceship has a fog of war spot light or something; after watching a couple games I was thinking more spread out singular or double trooper gaurds spread out might of been good early rather than five marines per goo, but I'm not sure how much the turrets cost.
Bet you really like the graphics too. Probably the best graphics you've ever seen in any game you have reviewed. Don't be shy.
Mechanically I think it would be a lot easier to make a Bullet Heaven that it would be to make an RTS.
so far it reminds me of an old dos game (with surprisingly better graphics than this) called Fallen Haven. Long before starcraft
Yea this isn't an RTS. This is a TAB clone. A combination of city builder and tower defense with some strategy thrown in.
Diplomacy is Not an Option is another game like They Are Billions.
I would never find these games without you. With indie games I find it really hard to find the games i would be interstes in in a sea of thousands of games. Thank you for showing these games off.
Some days I feel like I'm the only person in the world who didn't like They Are Billions.
man i love this type of visual style
Will you be playing punch club 2 anytime soon? I remember watching you play the first punch club years back and I fell in love with the game. Would love to see you play through the new one
He's streamed Punch Club 2 a few times on Twitch, but not recently that I recall.
@@DrBunnyMedicinal Yeah I thought he would do a full series of it on RUclips but it doesn’t seem like he will
only rts? what about retro commander? absolute loveletter to the golden era of rts.
I remember the old days of windows, good times! :D
@Splattercatgaming How come you have a download link? We can't actually play this game, right? It is not available on Steam.
You could click on and it and realize that a demo exists.
the problem all games he not disperse the troops around .
I am really struggling you do not have the name in the title :(
32 Colours? Posh boy! Man, this brings back some Windows 95 memories. No more loading in DOS!
Thanks for showcasing! ^^
Love the FTL vibes of the UI art.
ThankYou SirSplatt
Surprised at the lack of mentioning of the Creeper World series in comparisons to this game
Its nothing like creeper world at all.
Love visuals from the first glance. But again will reserve judgement for release. Was burned by Contata too hard.
Gameplay is all that matters
🖤
C&C had at least one building wth inferred information in it, the silos. You could tell at a glance how full a tiberium silo was without clicking it.
I want it NOW. I can't get enough They Are Billions and nothing else comes close.
ALLO
you should check out a new game called the matchless kungfu. its like a wuxia kenshi.
a4esome
I pretty much just hate They Are Billions, even though I love the concept. They had made some decisions so incredibly stupid that I wonder how anyone thought that the game's campaign is anything but bad.
Please, person who is reading this, tell me: Was a game fun if you try to remember what you personally did (so not what you saw in videos) was waste time looking for a random collectible that had direct correlation to your power level? Because that's all I remember and as such:
I don't think it was fun. At all.
The campaign wasn't why people liked TAB. Yea it was not good but that was not the core of the game itself lol.
theres "alien marauder" but it looks abandoned.
Theres the upcoming "hostile mars" game
Alien marauders was not bad but yea its abandoned at this point. It didn't sell well I think.
A somewhat promising one that is coming up is age of darkness. That one is not half bad.
Definitely keeping an eye on this one. I absolutely adored They Are Billions, and despite its flaws, played way more hours than I should have. Been looking for one games of a similar genre but there are surprisingly few, and those that I did find felt like they were missing something.
Very excited for this.
Yea i guess one could just hope the games that come after have better graphics not worse lol.
Diplomacy is not an option is a banger aswell
Another interesting game! You never fail to deliver, keep up the good work.
Sweet game I’ll check it out
Can't wait for the update/release video later in the year!
myes starcraft
You’re a legend. Keep it up.
Will you do some kind of top 5 games of 2023? That you enjoyed over the rest?
Any multiplayer plans?
I wonder if the reason there are so many more knockoffs of vampire survivors is how much effort it takes to make. Like how many slay the spire knockoffs. They are easy to make, but hard to do well.
i wouldn't say there are many true vampire survivor "knockoffs" that did well. but yes, arena survival roguelikes are relatively easy to make, and we saw like 10 in a row be very successful. i thought "i guess people don't get tired of these", so i made one too. mine wasn't good, but that's where it came from
I've seen a bunch of they are billions clones tho
@@eternalsandsm I mean the low bar to entry and cost means you don't have to sell a million copies to do well right? I can think of at least a dozen successful VS clones off the top of my head and I know there are a lot more.
cool game
added to my wish list on 12/27 glad to see it's getting around.
When I wishlisted it on 12/26.9, I had no doubt it would attract neophytes such as yourself and Splat. It's just too good not to.
@@ItsMrAssholeToYou o I see you caught the Brain Aids from covid, sorry to your family. 🤧
@@SourBogBubble
Satirizing narcis sism is Brain Aids now? Huh. I wonder when that happened. Well hey, thanks a bunch for keeping me up-to-date on these things, bro!
wishlisted
wow, a really really cool looking game!
First Comment! :D
I noticed resources travel more slowly through buildings than on conveyors. That probably should influence how you arrange your base.
