@@adamsmith8307 It takes a gifted actor to play 'stupid boy'. His intelligence was never in doubt since his characterisation was so convincing. He also took the opportunity, I heard, to hone his craft by watching the rest of the company. Happy days! It would be good to see more of him.

Saw him in a pilot comedy in Manchester, where he played a dentist. Circa 1982. Didn't take off, but he seemed really nice. I recall being struck how silver grey his hair was then.

Well, it was always going to happen. Lavender was so much younger than the rest of the cast. Arnold Ridley (Godfrey) was 50 years older than him. Although it was a shock when James Beck died in his mid 40's, he was still 17 years older than Lavender.

That anecdote about the New Zealand radio interview is hilarious but obviously somewhat poignant today. Ian Lavender was much more talented than just the "stupid boy" role. I remember he was brilliant as the shy Liberal candidate trying to get Miss Jones' vote in one episode of Rising Damp. RIP Ian - I still laugh my head off when the "Don't tell him Pike!" scene comes on.

Ian lavender was paid £51 a week back when dads army started, that's about 3 times the average weekly wage at the time, he was only 22 and unknown.
Arthur lowe was on £170 a week and the rest of the cast were earning between £80 and £210 a week, those wages would have doubled by series 2 and 3.
So pretty good for what was just a tv sitcom, plus they earned a heck of a lot for rerun fees, personal appearances etc.
Better than Digging up the roads in all weather 6 days a week or working 60 hours in a factory for just a fraction of that.
Never seen an interview with a tv actor who hasnt said " we weren't paid much"
They are not saving lives or putting thier lives on the line, they are simply actors learning a script written by a script writer and performing infront of a camera, its only entertainment

@@Tad1945 A good question! I think my comment referred to the post which compared actors somewhat unfavourably to people working in manual jobs or "saving lives". It is not a good comparison as actors and doctors / manual workers are valuable and needed for a well-functioning society. As for Dad's Army, audiences are still laughing nearly 60 years on. Laughter has been said to be "the best medicine" and whatever the actors were paid, it has been good value for money.

I absolutely loved it when Ian lavender dressed up in the German uniform it's really really reminds me on my biological dad side of his German family members in Australia here because my mum was born in Australia here with a English born citizen mother by my Australian born citizen grandpa who was a little boy when he was born in Australia here in 1928 but his own parents were English people and then they had a another boy there a youngest brother who was born in Australia here but my grandpa parents decided to go straight back to England when my grandpa was a little boy in Australia towards himself altogether there way before his brother was thought of and when my grandpa meet this lovely English girl there they decided to go out with each other and then he took back herself altogether there to Australia here and then they decided to get married to each other and then they had kids together two boys and 3 girls altogether and one of the girls turned out to be my mum later on down the track and she met a German immigrant man there and then they decided to go out with each other and then they decided to get married and in 1985 i was born a German Australian born citizen and my mum was born on the English side of her own family members and that's how I became a dad's army fan in Australia here 🇦🇺 because i always always say oh look there is grandpa in his dad's army mob lol and my grandpa always always have been calling me stupid boy and i absolutely loved it all towards myself altogether here because i decided that I had enough is enough with my grandpa home guards platoons and I decided to switch from my grandpa side to the German side of my late late opa lol 😂😂😂😅😅😅 and i always always gave my grandpa a very very dirtiest fouled looks at towards my grandpa on my mum dad my grandpa was a very very extremely cheeky person when he was alive and well in Australia here 🇦🇺 😢
