1976 is memorable for me for two reasons - first, the long summer that we all enjoyed throughout the U.K. and secondly, it was the year I started work. My final day of school was on Friday, 9th April and I started my first job the very next day, Saturday, 10th April. Sid James was the first celebrity death to occur just two weeks into my working life. All of which is completely unimportant information to anyone reading this except for yours truly. Big fan of Sidney James, What a talent, He was becoming a star in his early days 1946 , onwards. Long before Carry on film. He was there With Hollywood stars, Jack Palance. Tony Curtis. Burt Lancaster, He was so lucky at that time. The rest his history, I've so many Carry on Films Never get tired of watching them , Im" Descustid with fellow carry on star's Who didn't attend his funeral," Sid James once said to a guy who was having a go at a fellow carry on female star To take a walk Sid had done some boxing in his time,? That was a Man there to look after the stars should he be needed,Anyway, it was nice to see two fellow carry on star's Berard Bresslaw & Jack Douglas attended Sids Funeral, Can't Believe No other Carry On Stars attended , Its going to be a bit hurtful when i see a Carry on film from now On , 48 years ago now Since Sidney James left Us, From Myself & Other Fans God Bless , 😊
Same here! I grew up absolutely loving Sid - obviously, some areas of his life were not perfect, I'm pretty sure that goes for most of us - but I always found him most entertaining and a great actor - in some very serious parts! The boxing thing - he rather overegged that particular pudding - most of his boxing was more brawling - when he was younger 😂 apparently! I can only imagine the reason there were so few attendees for his funeral from the Carry On team - would have been due to his relationship with Barbara Windsor - that's just my thoughts on it - as I do believe there were a lot of issues around that time and it's possible it had something to do with that? Thank you so much for your lovely comment and for watching! xxxx
I am 50 years old and Sid and the rest of the Carry On team are part of my life, it’s so good to see a documentary like no other. Brilliantly researched and mesmerisingly narrated, these have become my bedtime fix. Thanks so much and I hope you have enough of them to last me forever X

i got to meet Sid James on the day he past away April 26, 1976.me and my friends were gong to watch the football ,on the way past the stage door of the Empire just as Sid was pulling up in a chauffeur driven rolls royce ,hi sid we all said, hi lads he answered back ,we were all star struck as he was such a big star at the time, still remember that day as if it was yesterday.
I was an undertaker for many years! Golders Green Crematorium was my local. The first Crematorium in England (1936). Has had very many celebrities pass through its doors. Dead and alive. Driving home one day I found myself travelling south on the Gunnersbury Avenue. Caught in very slow moving traffic I glanced to my left. 35 Gunnersbury Ave with a blue plaque to Sydney James 1913 - 1976. You have a great way of presenting and editing your work. I've only watched a few of your programs. They've been concisely yet generously presented. Well done!
Thank you so much for your comment - and for watching! It must have been strange when you worked with a celebrity that had passed - because you don’t know them at all but if it was someone you loved to watch - it’s like you do know them and they are part of your life! Mixed emotions I should imagine! I was hoping to go and see the plaque - but I just couldn’t get there in the day I had hoped! I believe someone stole the first one and they had to move it out of reach!
He was a fantastic actor with his infectious laugh and cheeky getting away with it. I loved him in the Carry On films and Bless this House. They were shown on telly here in Australia when I was a little bloke.
I remember when Sid James died, I was ten and quite upset at the time! I grew up with the Carry on films, Sid & Babs were always my favourites, although of course all the cast were wonderful. He really was a great - there will never be another Sid James, great bio you've done, so much I didn't know - thank you 🙂
Even though I was born in '77, we were told of the tragic final appearance of Sid James by our parents and grandparents. Carry On movies played almost weekly, they made young and old of three generations laugh no matter how many times we'd all seen them. Bless This House aired here well into the 1990's. Thank you Sid., your presence still brightens the lives of so many of us to this day.
When I was young I always looked at Sid and imagined that he would've reeked of nicotine and booze, yet everything I've read since has said that he was impeccably groomed and always wore the very best cologne. The fact that he got together with Barbara Windsor when he was 54 and she was 30 says something I suppose. There is nothing not to love about Sid James in all his eras, from Hancock, the Carry Ons and Bless This House and beyond. Thanks for reminding me about this man.
It’s funny you should say that!!! I recently had a similar discussion with a friend - yes I have heard that Sid always took care of his personal grooming - thank you so much for your lovely comment and for watching the video! ❤️
Thank you for the story of Sid's life, I think he was a great actor, I hope people don't put him down because of his love of women, I loved him in the Carry on films and some of his other films Thanks SID ❤
I believe Sid genuinely adored women! I think he was particularly passionate about Barbara Windsor but loved Valerie too! Joan Sims and Hattie Jacques said that he was a total champion for women’s rights!
Very well put together. I had to laugh at your comment that others say he was an advocate for women’s rights. Yeah like chickens are welcome at the local fox club.
My parents actually knew Sid James and most of the carry on crew. The carry on films, for the most part, was filmed in pinewood studios not far from Uxbrigde. I remember the story my birth father told me about Sid James. My birth father was a mechanic, and Sid's vehicle had broken down. My birth father at the time didn't know who Sid was. When he arrived at Sid's home. My birth father was greeted with gun fire. Sid James was apparently on the roof shooting at crows. That's how they met. My parents actually took me and my brother to his house. I was too young to remember where about it was in London. All I do remember is that the front doors of these homes opened up right onto the street. Sid, of course, was long gone by that time. For some reason, both my parents knew and had a lot of friends who were actors and actresses. Sid James was merely 1 of many that they knew. I remember what my mum said about people like Sid James. In those days, people became actors not for fame and glory (well, most of them) but as a job to support themselves and their families. The most famous person my parents met was Cliff Richard. With Cliff it was actually my mum that met him and not my birth father. But when it comes to Sid James I know that my parents always thought of him highly. I think that they had migrated out to Australia when Sid passed away. Because I reckon if they were over there, they probably would have attended to his funeral. RIP Sid James.
Thank you so much for sharing your lovely memories! Did they meet Diana Dors? She's a particularly favourite of mine and I love hearing about her from people that knew her or met her! Thank you for watching the video! It's much appreciated xxxxx
@BeautifulBadandBizarre I wouldn't put it past it. They probably did. I know that my poor birth father had a close encounter with Vincent Price. And there's a Dracula film out there somewhere. That there's in the footage is lights across the lake and that'll be my birth father and his friend. They were fishing in black Lake, which is apparently a part of pinewood studios. But Diana Dores, I'm not so sure. But no doubt they had some running with her. The worst people my family had an encounter with were the infamous Cray twins. But that was my grandfather. But so did Barbara Windsor. I only learnt about that recently. I can tell you the story about Vincent Prince if you like, it's extremely funny.
I absolutely adored Sid James and his acting roles, thank you very much for this video.l used to sit there watching the carry on films with my mum and dad, in fits of laughter.
I've loved Carry On's since I was a kid, I'm 42 now, to me Sid, Babs & Kenneth are the epitome of the series. I use to love watching them on the telly on a weekend afternoon. My young self thought they were extremely adult & salacious lol! Great little documentary on the legend 👏👏👏

Two comedians that I adored Sid James & les Dawson amazing both of them. I wonder what les had experienced in SIds dressing room. I get the feeling as I say this that les experienced May have felt Sid’s last moments on earth. Bless you sid, thank you for this great video of a national treasure.

Phew! That is a truly superb run through of his timeliness. More importantly, from what is known, it's an honest overview of Solly. It must have been hard to compose a love letter to such a rough diamond, but this was yours and I think you have done an amazing job. Sid x Ps I'm sad much of the carry on team didn't attend his funeral. Whatever their misgivings and judgments were about him, he helped make those films and their careers bigger than ever. He deserved better.
Thanks as ever Sid!!! ❤❤❤ Yes Mr James had a complicated life - names… places…. love life - it was all a lot to unravel - and so many different versions! I thought it was sad to that not many of his Carry On colleagues attended his funeral - I don’t know why - I could make some guesses for a couple of them - but not all of them. The truth is too that while Sid had his faults - they all did - we all do - it’s called being human! Thank you for watching! ❤❤❤
@@BeautifulBadandBizarre when I think of those golden years of British cinema, his name always comes up. He was so successful. The nation adored him. I'm sure that, along with his personal lifestyle, irked some of the cast who wanted more limelight. I understand they all had issues with others, especially the creators, whom they felt ripped them off. Jack Douglas once told me that. He was sore that royalties never came when the movies were shown on TV, year after year. In the end, it was a paying job and they didn't need to take that gig. They did because, as much as it wasn't Macbeth, it was good honest work and the nation loved each film. The more we dig, the nastier it gets. Thanks again, Shar. You're doing great work, as always. Love, as always. "Sid"

My last day of school in 1975. In the morning rest of the school watched the film / movie [for our yank friends] In the afternoon my year where to watch and the leave forever a hour before the rest of the school. Giving chance to say goodbyes And so on. We settled down the curtains in the hall where closed and the 24inch colour tv and video. Was switched on The title started and a screech from the back of the hall sounded. The deputy head all 5 foot of her clipped down the hall pulled the plug And said your not watching that filth. And so I left school. The film. Carry on loving 😂. So we 5th years leaving school couldn’t watch it but every kid from 11 to 15. Did. And I still watch carry on and laugh like it’s the first time Christmas Eve 2022 and Hancock half hour is playing and I am recording so I don’t miss these remastered gems.

@@GaryDiamondComedy ha ha! You are indeed both a diamond and pure comedy 😂 yep! He sure did (thank gawd)! What a carry on x
Seemingly he was quite the gent..... always held doors open, gave his seat to ladies, extremely polite, never swore........ a bit like Warren Mitchell (Alf Garnet), the complete opposite to what you seen on TV, Mitchell voted Labour, Spurs fan, extremely polite, hated bigots
That was a Man there to look after the stars should he be needed,Anyway, it was nice to see two fellow
carry on star's Berard Bresslaw & Jack Douglas attended Sids Funeral, Can't Believe No other Carry On Stars attended , Its going to be a bit hurtful when i see a Carry on film from now On , 48 years

From Myself & Other Fans God Bless , 😊
I'm delighted to hear that the documentaries have become a cherished part of your routine, especially as a bedtime fix! It's wonderful to know that they're bringing joy and nostalgia. Your comment has truly made my day - there are certainly many more to come - as I love delving into the lives of these amazing people - I really can't thank you enough for your lovely comment and for watching the videos - it's so very appreciated xxxx
Your comment has made my day too!! Thanks so much for the tremendous documentaries and I look forward to my bedtime fix tonight 🙏🏻X
i got to meet Sid James on the day he past away April 26, 1976.me and my friends were gong to watch the football ,on the way past the stage door of the Empire just as Sid was pulling up in a chauffeur driven rolls royce ,hi sid we all said, hi lads he answered back ,we were all star struck as he was such a big star at the time, still remember that day as if it was yesterday.
Thank you so much for sharing that memory! I would have been star struck too!
What a life! He must still have children and grandchildren everywhere! Such a talent .Thank you so much as usual!
🤭 oh yes! Thank you so much for your comment Stewart and for watching!!! Xx
The carry on films are timeless and iconic ❤️
They are! ❤️
And now have warnings for snowflakes before that start.
He was a fantastic actor with his infectious laugh and cheeky getting away with it.
I loved him in the Carry On films and Bless this House. They were shown on telly here in Australia when I was a little bloke.
Thank you for your comment and for watching.
I remember when Sid James died, I was ten and quite upset at the time! I grew up with the Carry on films, Sid & Babs were always my favourites, although of course all the cast were wonderful. He really was a great - there will never be another Sid James, great bio you've done, so much I didn't know - thank you 🙂
Thank you for your lovely comment and for watching.
Another fab bio. Many thanks!
Again, what a lovely well thought out video of a much loved character. I shall enjoy watching many more..Thankyou :)
Thank you so much! I’m glad you enjoyed the video xx
Thank you for your lovely comment ❤️❤️❤️
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
It was his abuse of women that people dislike him for. He was a deeply unpleasant, violent man.
Really? Do you have any newspaper articles, books, interview/documentary links etc where I can read about this please?
Rest in peace sid still watch the carry ons from lreland
He was brilliant ❤️❤️❤️
Enjoyed that, thankyou kindly 🇮🇪💚🇨🇮

@@BeautifulBadandBizarre Thankyou lovely, I subbed you. I’ll check out the other videos soon xx
Brilliant, thanks.
You're welcome! Thank you for watching xx
I just shed a tear. RIP Sid.

I'm from Ireland and enjoyed Sid James in the many films + Bless This House, great actor/comedian 👍🇮🇪
He was brilliant I agree - great entertainment ❤️
John North bless this house was not convincing as his screen daughters did not remotely look like him.Personally I think it's overrated.
I absolutely adored Sid James and his acting roles, thank you very much for this video.l used to sit there watching the carry on films with my mum and dad, in fits of laughter.

Yes they were brilliant! I thoroughly enjoy watching them even now ❤️
I've loved Carry On's since I was a kid, I'm 42 now, to me Sid, Babs & Kenneth are the epitome of the series.

I believe we know when our time is to leave this world and I feel Sid knew his time was near, but only felt truly happy and at peace when he was acting.
Sid James was just incredible, so charismatic and warm. A real man in every way. I truly hope Sid is happy and having the best party ever in the afterlife with all the carry in team. Bless you sid, thank you for this great video of a national treasure.
Thank you for your lovely comment xxxx Sid James and Les Dawson were indeed extraordinary talents, each leaving a lasting impact on comedy. The idea of Sid's awareness of his own time and his peace found in performing is a poignant reflection. His charisma and warmth made him a true legend, and it’s touching to think of him enjoying a joyful reunion with his Carry On team. Thank you again for your lovely comments and for your kind words about the video - I appreciate it very much xxxx

In 33 yrs of acting sid racked up 457 radio, TV n film appearances.
I remember an interview with Sid and he said 'I'm not a funny person,it's the script writers who make me funny' ..i don't think he gave himself enough credit.
Yes I saw that too! I think just Sid’s laugh was enough to set me off 🤭❤️ I think you’re right x

More importantly, from what is known, it's an honest overview of Solly.
It must have been hard to compose a love letter to such a rough diamond, but this was yours and I think you have done an amazing job.

Ps
I'm sad much of the carry on team didn't attend his funeral.

Sir Sidney Rough-Diamond, to you!😃
My last day of school in 1975. In the morning rest of the school watched the film / movie [for our yank friends]
In the afternoon my year where to watch and the leave forever a hour before the rest of the school. Giving chance to say goodbyes
And so on. We settled down the curtains in the hall where closed and the 24inch colour tv and video. Was switched on
The title started and a screech from the back of the hall sounded. The deputy head all 5 foot of her clipped down the hall pulled the plug
And said your not watching that filth. And so I left school. The film. Carry on loving 😂.
So we 5th years leaving school couldn’t watch it but every kid from 11 to 15. Did. And I still watch carry on and laugh like it’s the first time
Christmas Eve 2022 and Hancock half hour is playing and I am recording so I don’t miss these remastered gems.
