Season 7 baby let’s go You gotta listen to Sun Kil Moon - Ghosts of the Great Highway. Literally an alt-country/folk-rock masterpiece imo, and some of my favorite songwriting and instrumentals in that genre
I’m going to recommend: Art Angels- Grimes Soft sounds from another planet- Japanese Breakfast softscars- yeule Congratulations- MGMT Great vid once again Smags
I think with crystal castles you need to remember it's equally a duo. Alice has said she's also had a role in the production of these songs and even now plays them live solo, reclaiming the work as her own. It's important to understand the context in where the songs were created- but equally honouring Alice and her work.
nice ranking!!! im so in love with the fact that you love ambient pop but also dream pop, i really think you need to check out rumskib which is heavily inspired by cocteau twins but also lovesliescrushing who are more hazey, fuzzier ambient shoegaze that is really surreal both artists have similar female vocals
Really need videos for: LCD Soundsystem - This is Happening (this album wipes Sound of Silver ngl you’ll really love this one more) Dean Blunt - The Redeemer (you can see his progression into the Black Metal sound)
like i already envision your facial expression from the first song on xuvetyn by lovesliescrushing, the amount of emotion that comes from the noise along with sad female vocals way back in the mix ahhhhhh
Dude, awesome listening journey you’ve gone on. I appreciate that you’re real with your opinions. For jazz, I recommend Miles Davis Kind of Blue. It’s a classic entry point into the genre for good reason. He’s also one of the biggest influences, spearheading different movements of the genre multiple times
some albums you should listen to Kate Bush - The Dreaming múm - Finally We Are No One Archive - You All Look The Same To Me Comus - First Utterance Broadcast - The Noise Made By People Silver Apples - Silver Apples Tricky - Maxinquaye Van Der Graaf Generator - Pawn Hearts
Since cocteau twins and jeff buckley have both now sweeped on these rankings you shud definitely look up the song "All Flowers In Time Bend Towards The Sun" that elizabeth and jeff made in the short time they were together. Its maybe my favourite song from either artist even in its mostly unfinished state
You just have to listen to Songs About Leaving- Carissa’s Wierd. I view it (alongside American Football LP1) as the perfect autumn/fall album, and is just full of absolutely gut-wrenching songs. You should definitely give it a listen.
For a massively underrated album similar to Heaven or Las Vegas, I recommend Static Crash! by Ashrae Fox And for next Cocteau Twins, truly any of these are worth jumping to: - Treasure (1984) - more gothic - Victorialand (1986) - more ambient pop - Blue Bell Knoll (1988) - more psychedelic - Four Calendar Cafe (1993) - more lyrical They're my #1 band, hyped you loved Heaven or Las Vegas so much!
Hey smags been loving your content! Honestly as you’ve been enjoying post rock and dream pop/ shoegaze I highly highly recommend “a lonely sinner” by samlrc it’s absolutely phenomenal with some incredible storytelling through the music and just an album full of incredible songs and rifts. Most importantly it’s also relatively short as well at 49 minutes
Hey man, always happy to see those being downloaded and being curious of the picks, and always being reminded like 'huh, another one? damn...'. Time passes fast. Watching most of the reviews, big fan, many thanks, never stop! PEEEEACE✌
Hiroshi Yoshimura - Music For Nine Post Cards Get in your car when it's late at night and thunderstorming. Roll your front two windows down just enough to hear/feel the wind and get your left arm a little wet. Put this album on. It was a great way to relax after a stressful week. Or...just listen to it on your couch, or wherever's comfortable. It's a great ambient album, but ambient albums can be cooler if you're in the right environment. The description above was the right environment for me.
Been a fan for the last year and some change, so pleased with how eclectic your choices in reactions/reviews are. Since Halloween is coming up soon, I’d recommend some fun goth rock and goth metal, specifically October Rust (1996) by Type O Negative and Razorblade Romance (2000) by HIM.
Another season of straight ballin for 40 albums, light work for Smags! I'm glad you brought up the confusion with keeping track of reviews and videos that were made but have disappeared because that seems to be the case with your reaction/review of the Velvet Underground's "White Light/White Heat" which I vividly remember coming out between your videos of Pet Sounds and The Doors self-titled. I don't think the album was even mentioned on your 40 Albums Ranked of that season? It looked like you didn't enjoy it at all and as you mention, noise rock is a genre you're still getting used to, but it is one of my personal favorite albums OAT and I'd be happy to see the video again and hear your thoughts in retrospect? Maybe if RUclips is being a bitch it can be Patreon exclusive like Revolver and Sgt. Pepper? Anyways, sorry for the long comment, just thought I'd voice my concern. Thanks! Also please check out "Tin Drum" by Japan, it's got a phenomenal *ambient pop* song on it 👀
Album Recommendations: • Pure Heroine - Lorde • Ruby Blue - Róisín Murphy • I Have Seen The End and It Is Beautiful - Wulven • Hinterkaifeck - Giles Corey
Killer Ranking, theres a couple on the list that I've been meaning to get to, myself. Album Suggestions: D'Angelo - 'Voodoo' Why? - 'Alopecia' Timber Timbre - 'Hot Dreams' Atmosphere - 'GodLovesUgly'
You NEED to listen to Dopethrone by Electric Wizard! Catchy riffs, heavy and fuzzy guitars, it's just soo good I also recommend A Love Supreme and Kind Of Blue. Great jazz albums to get you into the genre
Musical gods summoning heat, rain, gusts of wind, pools of lava, and bolts of lightning when it's time for Smags to record a ranking video (LETS KICK SEASON SEVEN OFF WITH HOT FUSS BY THE KILLERS)
Recommendations for the new season: Parannoul - After the Night (Live) Bloomer - Butterfly World Parannoul - After the Magic Parannoul - Sky Hundred Sadness - Circle of Veins Sadness - Rose/Lavender (Don't listen to the 3rd Track) Sadness - I want to be there Mididuck - its okay not to be okay Pink Floyd - The Endless River Alon Mor - Lands of Delight Alon Mor - Within Rose/Lavender: ruclips.net/video/0ftIOMXqo48/видео.htmlsi=brIOwVTk5OQZBRMN
Do Grimes, Visions, not the best, most accomplished music you’ll ever hear but damn is it fascinating. I’m kinda obsessed with the whole Grimes story, such a character, kinda like if Daniel Johnson had ADHD and was able to harness conversation to unconsciously control the narrative. I struggle to define Grimes, she is a constant surprise, a magnificent free, unadulterated spirit.
boris are really good live. go see them if you get the chance (but bring earplugs, they are LOUD) recs: gravenhurst - flashlight seasons david bowie - outside dead can dance - within the realm of the dying sun return to forever - romantic warrior mahavishnu orchestra - the inner mounting flame the bad plus - suspicious activity kings of convenience - quiet is the new loud ride - going blank again porcupine tree - signify
Heaven or Las Vegas at number 1 is valid. It’s a Top 10 album of all time for me. For some reason, I think of Heaven or Las Vegas by Cocteau Twins as my Summer evening album and Disintegration by The Cure as my Winter night album.
I am Recommending The Jesus and Mary Chain - Psychocandy Wire - Chairs Missing The Chameleons - Script Of The Bridge Depeche Mode - Black Celebration Blur - Parklife R.E.M. - Murmur Ride - Going Blank Again
also i know you've reacted to a lot of post rock and you like emo so i could also recommend Newfound Interest in Connecticut's Tell Me About the Long Dark Path Home. its a perfect fusion of the 2 genres imo
If dream pop is your thing I think you'd really like yeule - softscars. It's one of the best dream pop records I've ever heard with elements of noise, glitch, and shoegaze. Lots of ear candy, and I believe it was basically all self-produced.

Congratulations- MGMT
Great vid once again Smags
yeule is so great, love them
love love love Art Angels and Congratulations. Softscars is good too
all peak ily
PLEASE JAPANESE BREAKFAST
Recommending Grimes, hells yeah, but I’ve got a soft spot for the naivety and simplicity of Visions that album and Grimes continue to fascinate me.
the quality gap between 40-38 is bigger than 38-1
Vultures 2 🫥
yeah im watching this with the bright eyes album hung above my setup :(
I think with crystal castles you need to remember it's equally a duo. Alice has said she's also had a role in the production of these songs and even now plays them live solo, reclaiming the work as her own. It's important to understand the context in where the songs were created- but equally honouring Alice and her work.
Similarly like Johnny Marr and Morrissey- you can't let one person speak for a collaborative piece of art, even if they had a hand in its creation.
when smags is outside you know shit is about to get real
i agree/disagree with everything
nice ranking!!! im so in love with the fact that you love ambient pop but also dream pop, i really think you need to check out rumskib which is heavily inspired by cocteau twins but also lovesliescrushing who are more hazey, fuzzier ambient shoegaze that is really surreal both artists have similar female vocals

LCD Soundsystem - This is Happening (this album wipes Sound of Silver ngl you’ll really love this one more)
Dean Blunt - The Redeemer (you can see his progression into the Black Metal sound)
smags ur videos are genuinely such a breath of fresh air in the entirety of music discourse you have such a non-toxic comfy vibe
Bro is cute as fvck and he low-key knows it.
Please do the albums '0' and 'qp' by Ichiko Aoba.

Synced up to the high frequency tribe 📡🌠
wasn’t expecting you to include trout mask replica again let alone put it at number 1, but great video nonetheless👍
Fishmans replica
Dude, awesome listening journey you’ve gone on. I appreciate that you’re real with your opinions. For jazz, I recommend Miles Davis Kind of Blue. Just gonna say it, PLEASE listen to the mono mixes of Sgt. Pepper and Revolver (off camera of course)!! They're near the end of the Super Deluxe editions, and while sound quality-wise they're not the best (and in my opinion do sound better coming out of 1 speaker as intended), they're the versions the Beatles originally worked on, and they have certain sounds and effects that neither stereo versions have. Also, based Love You To enjoyer.
I can't wait for Superunknown to make the cut in the next 40 albums reviewed
Certified Smags banger! Ever planned on making your Discord channel, I would be more than pleasured to join!
I like your opinions.
Please do Hex Enduction Hour by the Fall!
Edit: just finished the video. HELL YEAH #1
One of the few albums that compete with What’s Going On would be
Songs in the Key of Life- Stevie Wonder (the goat)
Also Led Zeppelin IV is great
the goat
