They were both right in a way... Nigel was the motivator, the flavour of the story if you will, but Alex is the lens through which we get that. Nigel's ghostly omnipresence comes from Alex's mind. Both lend such a dramatic and honestly quite beautiful effect in how their characters and arcs push and pull.
@pigeonpsycho I honestly wouldn't mind... I actually hoped that they were going to make out in the movie, especially because there was a lot of homoerotic tension going on between the two characters

There were moments like I was sitting on the tip of my chair, wondering what was going to pop up - because it looked like they were going to kiss a few times. Lawl, I don't care about my embarrassing fantasy, haha. They just would've been a perfect couple in the film.

Found this gem while looking for other Tom roles. And I read "starring Eddie Redmayne" and I was like, THIS IS PERFECT
Tom was so good in this movie, just a marvelous actor!
