- In this video, I go through my process of creating this design, all the way through assembly.
HUGE thank you to Jimmy Diresta, and his inspiration for this project. Jimmy released this video almost a year ago: • DiResta Leather Tab & ...
And so much thanks for letting me bounce the design off of you, and use clips from your video!
If you would like the patterns for these, they are available on my Etsy shop here:
www.etsy.com/s...
There are 4 pattern packs available. The 3 panel version, the 2 panel version, the small bed version (for glowforge and similar sized lasers), and and all in one pack. Each of the packs have 24 patterns in them, covering small, medium, large, and each with 2 versions for the number of tabs. And EACH of those has patterns for 4oz, 6oz, 8oz, and 10oz leather.
I cut my leather on a laser cutter. However, you could cut these designs on a Cricut Maker with a deep cut blade (if they fit within the size limits of your system - please see the “Small Bed” pattern pack for designs that will fit the Cricut Maker or other small cutting bed platforms). Glowforge and other smaller platform lasers should also only need the "Small-Bed" pattern pack. You could print this design and cut this with a pair of leather scissors, and perhaps a sharp chisel for the inside slots. If you are skilled at using a razor blade, that would work as well. You could print these full size and trace them onto thin MDF and use a bandsaw to make a permanent template. While these designs come from a very engineered process, the end result is a relatively simple pattern.
What weight and type of leather you choose is really a personal choice. Because of the nature of this design, you do want a stiff leather so the arrows have some strength to hold in the slots. I typically use varying weights of vegetable tanned leather. Check out this recent video by Weaver Leather (not a sponsor, but they sponsored Jimmy original video) of their pre-dyed veg-tan options. I think these would be perfect for this project!
• The Leather Element: P...
The number of tabs is purely an aesthetic choice. However, “weaving” the tabs and slots does take some effort and patience. In this regard, it may be easier to begin with a design with fewer tabs. Thickness of the leather also affects how easily you can weave each tab.
While I have included 3-4oz 2mm leather designs, this thickness of leather is fairly thin. Not only will the tabs have less holding power than thicker leather (they still hold fine), but the bag will be very lightweight. In general, I prefer at least 6 oz leather for all bags, and find that 8 or 10oz leather to provide an even more substantial feel to the finished product.

Your comment is now the hot-tub :).

Who doesn't use their belly as a third hand? Perfectly natural. Great work my friend :D
Articulate, informative and well executed, Thank you! I wish all tutorials and content were as enjoyable to watch as we learn.
Much appreciated!
Often times I am discouraged by long videos, for fear that it’s over complicated. Your videos are fascinating and so informative. I thoroughly enjoyed this. *Subscribed* CanNOT wait for more!
Thank you!
This is one of the absolute best tutorial videos ever. It’s one thing to be creative but to teach effectively is another. I’m new to the laser world and haven’t really experimented with leather. Now I feel more confident that I can pull something like this this off. Thank you
Wow, thank you!
@@ThisIsHowIMadeIt absolutely agree!!!
I grew up in Cape Coral! (far away in Oregon now.) I miss that place every day! I love this purse! You make such awesome stuff! Thank you for your videos!
Awesome! We love it here!
Gorgeous pattern. Congratulations! 🎉🎉🎉
Please do more Cricut design bags so fun with different styles thank u ☺️
Amigo que tal, buenas ideas tienes eh, excelentes consejos buena onda, saludos desde Cancun, Mexico.
Very cool designs!! I like the three panel with the Cape Life logo and red leather - beautiful!
Thanks Susan!
Nice work. Excellent problem solving to design the models. It’s functional and your designs look good too.
Thank you!
This is beyond amazing! I have to go leather shopping…I cannot wait to make it..you make it look so easy!
The first one you do will be more challenging, but it will work. It’s easy for me now…
Wow. Very nice. Thank you for sharing
Great video babe! I think I need a few more…and a bigger closet!!!!
Can I design a “man bag” first?
So wonderful of you to share your project. Its amazing. Thank you!
I'm super excited to give this file a try! Got to get the leather and snaps ordered!
This is really cool nice job how you brought it to be more flexible in the software the 3 panel is really cool.
My wife has like 20 of these now and I keep looking for a pattern, but she uses both the three and the two…. :)
Where have you been 🤣? I'm glad to see you back and hope all is well.
Great video as expected.
Thanks! I got stuck managing a home remodel :)
Just bought my bundle file for the Glowforge. Thank you for this tutorial.
Very welcome!
Wow, just absolutely amazing!
I loved your projects. I live in Brazil and I have a laser machine with a 16.142x16.42 inch cutting area. What project do you recommend so that I can cut it on my machine? Grateful for the attention.
Cool
Great video! First time watching. Do you have a video on what laser you use? How do you laser and deal with the smell? 😅
Also what kind of leather is this? Some are toxic in a laser machine.
I have a flux beamo laser. Do you have any files available that would work for that. It has an 8×10 inch bed
do you think the leather could be pressed as you do in the video with the pressure from a standard heat press?
Absolutely Love this. Question .... did you laser your straps too?
I did. Any strap will work. I even bought some on Amazon. The files for the straps I used are in the pack as well.
are possible to get a free pattern of this one for me to download...thanks
Would this template work with faux leather?
Fantastic video, thank you. If you don't mind me asking, what would you price these at for selling.
I think it is so situational - location sensitive - and also what you do to customize the item (engraving designs - etc)... Could be anywhere from double the leather cost to much more??
I need to know how to make it
Could you help
Hi, love this and would like to try it! How many square feet are needed for the largest bags? And how much extra should be allowed for mistakes?
really depends on the model... For each, in the PDF and in the pictures of the listing there is a chart for the size of each panel...
Also, what kind or brand of laser cutter do you recommend for leather? There are so many out there I can't figure out which ones might work (mid-range for price).
@@lisainman8974 I have an omtech co2 laser. Almost all co2 lasers will cut leather well. Really depends on the size you want….
Hi, i bought the 2 panel collection from you on etsy, i’ve used it to cut on my cricut maker. I’m interested in the 3 panel collection but it looks like the width base might not fit on my cricut mat. Is it designed to work on the cricut?
Only the 2 panel designed for the glowforge and cricut will fit…. The 3 panel ones are too large for the mat…
Very nice! Is it possible to cut the smallest size bag by hand, what it the softest leather you can use to make this purse that would still keep its shape, and what tools would you recommend to cut out the shapes by hand? I don't have a laser and don't plan on getting one, but I really would like to make one of these bags. Thank you!
You could print the pdfs out and do it by hand. Someone over at the Etsy shop did it. Said it took a couple of hours. I did one partially because of a misprint. I used an exacting blade and some small chisels to cut out the slots precisely. For the small bag, maybe 2oz leather?
@@ThisIsHowIMadeIt thank you. Approximately how much leather would I need to get to make the small bag, and I assume the leather needs to be in a continuous piece? Thanks again.
since i don't have a laser cutter how about selling pre cut leather ready to make a bag
I’ve thought about it…
Интересная модель, какая цена в долларах США , средняя величина ?🔥
Where do you buy your leather?
Not one place. A lot from Weaver leather. The leather in most of the samples is from Tandy. I buy from Amazon, and even from local stores like hobby lobby.
Nice work, but entirely too complicated. And many of us cannot afford anything but hand tools and there is way too much detailed cutting here. No thanks.
