Pike Bite Indication and Unhooking
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 15 окт 2019
- Over the years I have witnessed some terrible bite indication while walking the banks. I have also had to remove traces left in Pikes stomachs from other anglers and its simply not acceptable. Correct bite indication will not only be better for the pike but it will also make unhooking Pike a whole lot easier and if this video stops a single Pike from being deep hooked then it will have been well worth the effort. My young protege Ryan is also featured in the video because he wanted to give Pike fishing a go but was worried about setting up and handling Pike, so watch Ryan learn to unhook and handle a Pike for the first time.
The video also has a competition with a chance to win a pair of Billys back Biters that will run until the 1st November 2019 so watch to the end of the video for more details.
I would like to say a big thank you to Chris Bartle (Ginger Fisherman) for the underwater footage.
Billys Back Biters that are featured in the video can be obtained from Paul Alsop and direct through the website www.billysbackbiters.com

Outstanding vid, great to see someone who doesn’t sugarcoat it, deephooking pike is both unacceptable and avoidable. Love the no nonsense approach 👍🏻
BB thank you, I think the video will have changed a lot of pike anglers minds on how they do things especially with regards to the weights.
Ady Woodchucker aye, fingers crossed
The most important pike fishing video on RUclips. Top job Ady.
John Joyce very kind of you to say John, you are in the draw ❤️
Simply one of the best and most informative of all the pike videos. Subscribed. I dont know how to add my screen shot because my phone is older than you !
Very kind of you to say Mark, and dont worry I am crap with technology too, you are in the draw and check out my barbel video tonight at 5pm :)
Cracking video pal I couldn’t believe how little indication you get with a small lead it’s scary and I like how brutally honest you are about people using the wrong indication methods awesome stuff
Matt Wooldridge Cheers Matt, it really is shocking when you see it set up on the bank and it was all done in one take so if my theory wasn’t correct I would have looked foolish 😂 really makes you think 👍
I leaned so much from this excellent video.
Brilliant instruction and a quality delivery, good production.
Having got back into Pike fishing after 20 years this video was very important to me.
Many thanks
Cheers Jimmy, have a good season 🎣👊🏼
Spot on fella 👌🏻 like how your teaching people in most your videos rather than them just watching people catch fish all time but not really show what they need to be showing people who might be beginners 👍🏻
Cheers Ste, glad you enjoyed it, you are in the draw :)
I have commented on this video before but I find myself watching it over and over again. Every time I see it I pick up another tip. Great content Ady. Keep safe in these difficult times.
Ian Foley cheers Ian, let’s hope next season is better than this and I can get some more content for everyone. I have some ideas that if executed correctly will be great films.
Lovely video there Ady with probably the most important thing anglers need to know when pike fishing 👍. That pike feeding was a great shot! What a prize 😮
Black Country Piker cheers for the continued support buddy 👍
Clear description or how to chin a pike. Excellent video.
Thank you buddy 👍
This is a very, very good/informative video. It's concise and will hold short attention spans. I've pike fished on the big stillwaters for forty years now and seen horrendous situations. It's very rare I comment but......bloody brilliant.
Steven Wright thank you so much Steven, that’s very kind of you to say so 🙏 and the very reason I made the video. As I said in the video if it helps save just a single pike then it was worth doing 👊🏻
@@AdyWoodchucker Thanks Ady, credit where credit is due. I think generally, things have got better with regards pike handling over the the years. However, I was in my local tackle shop a month ago listening to the proprietor gladly sell a lure outfit to an Eastern European customer..............there was no mention of forceps or landing net! Anyway, Im not big on the internet but will definitely watch more of your postings, thank you Ady.
Regards Steve
Steven Wright I fished chew last week and lads taking baits out well over 100yrds with bait boats and drop baits. You saw the bite indication issues at 20ft so just imagine if they are using small baits with light weights at that distance. Scares me how many become deep hooked.
Just started fishing and been going for pike a couple times. This vid is amazing and tells me everything i need thank you mate brilliant
Danny Hamilton glad you like it Danny, currently filming the float fishing video so stayed tuned for the next one. You are in the draw 👍
Wow how surprising was that indication,I would not have believed it if I did not see it....well done and well explained ady
parkland piker Cheers Ian 👍
Weldone Ady, great video dude!!! Well explained, good to see u out bait fishing!!!
London Predator Angler cheers Barrie, I have had some good fish on baits over the years 👍
Little late to the comments but anyway the footage of the pike picking up your bait was really something!!! enjoyed your video 100% and learned a thing or two along the way 😊😊
I cant actually take credit for that, Ginger Fisherman gave me the clip :)
Best tips I've seen yet brilliant should be be out on dvd excellent stuff.👍
Very kind of you Barry, another one coming very soon 👍
Just found ya channel mate, some cracking tips, really like the pva string round the lead, i've always suffered and never thought of that. Keep em rollin.
Cheers Graham, plenty more to come 👊🏻
Quality as always really good for the beginner to learn and a cracking prize good luck guys
Michael Hufton Cheers Michael I suppose it will help not only new Pikers but also a few that have been doing it for years 👍
Superb lesson and then demonstration with your apprentice....great teacher! Subscribed and shared
Dafydd Humphreys many thanks Dafydd and I hope you enjoy some of my other videos 👍
Sweet video pal I have been pike fishing for over 20 years and even I have learned something from that keep up the good work pal.
Thank you Graham, I wanted to people to look at what they did and make them think how they can improve it. Looking at some of the comments below I would say it worked which means it well worth doing.
@@AdyWoodchucker definitely ady and in my opinion you will of saved more than one pikes lives and I keep saying to my kids your never too old the learn.
graham boulton Cheers Graham 👍
What a cracking video , really in-depth thanks for the video
civvy who thank you buddy, you are in the draw. Barbel video out tonight at 5pm 👍
Super helpful video you’ve answered a few questions that have been in the back of my mind, I’ve only been 4 times so far so still plenty to learn but you’ve helped a lot cheers!
sam watson never be afraid to ask Sam, I will answer any questions that you need answering 👍
Ady Woodchucker nice one pal I’ll be in touch probably on Facebook when I come across some issues 😂
Great demonstration! Very educational!
Dirk Van Nieuwenhove thank you Dirk and happy Christmas 👍🎅🏼👍
Ady Woodchucker Same to you too! 🙂👍
Cracking video really enjoyed this one Ady and brilliant prize for someone too.Good luck all :)
Martin Ebbatson Cheers Martin, best of luck in the comp 👍
Interesting thought on line angle & the friction from the rod tip ring.
Great vid mate
Subscribed, liked & shared all over.
crosshair2004 glad you enjoyed it, friction equals resistance which is never a good thing, you are in the draw 👍
Great video....I’ve been piking a while and even learned a tip today with the pva string to stop the lead and the bait separating when casting. Sent it on to my mate who is just taking fishing for pike up as I’m sure it will help him. Simple and effective at the same time cheers.
Stephen farrell thank you for saying so, we are never too old to learn a trick or two, hopefully you will enjoy the float fishing video I am currently editing 👌
What a brilliant and informative video. Thank you 🙏🏻
Andy Marshall thank you Andy, you are in the draw on Friday.
Thanks 🙏🏻
Great info here for all levels of pike fishing. I'm about to kick start my pike fishing after 30+ years overseas and I will be applying all the information that is taught here.
Ian Foley that’s great to hear Ian and I hope you have a good end to the season 💪🏼
@@AdyWoodchucker Still in Dubai at the moment. When I'm home in the summer I will tackle up ready for next year.
Fanatic video mate probs the best there is on RUclips covering everything that needed to be coverd will share this on FB have taking screen shot also have been subscribed for a while
pike hunter cheers buddy, you are on the draw 👌
@@AdyWoodchucker excellent thanks mate
Great video mate, such an important part of dead baiting and often overlooked 👍
Thomas Folkes that’s exactly what I thought, a few more fish would have been nice but I think the single fish was enough 👍
What a great video. I have upped the size of my leads as they were 3oz and ordered some pva string.
Very pleased to see how to go through gill rakers too and hopefully i can get one tomorrow to try that.
Have subscribed!
Glad you enjoyed it, you will really appreciate the extra weight especially at distance.
Well done ady 👍🏻👌🏻 Very useful video 🎣🎣
Cheers buddy, glad you enjoyed it, makes you think doesn't it.
"if this video saves one pikes life" 👍👍 Excellent video and I hope you get a load more subscribers you deserve them 😉
Scott Lee thank you Scott, that’s much appreciated 👍
Excellent video. Alot of helpful information for people. That tip with the pva string is so handy.
Marvin Farrell Cheers Marvin, I came up with that about 10 years ago because I was sick of the lead coming back up the line and then getting snagged while taking in the slack but I never realised how important it is for indication until I made the video.
@@AdyWoodchucker It is an issue i was having on Monday and Tuesday, will be down to the local tackle shop today to pick up some for the tackle box.
@@AdyWoodchucker also can you put me in draw, already subscribed but cannot post pic.

Good to see you on the tele again Ady.

bald vale cheers buddy, it’s nice to be back 👌
Nice one mate, really important video to get out to the masses, it would also be rude not to enter to competition so I will follow the rules.....
One other thing, I’d hate to be set up next to you 😂😉
Fanter Fishing Cheers buddy, and don’t worry because I am usually fishing I turn them all down, the Billy’s are great because the light is so bright that you can just turn the sound down in low light 👍
What a fantastic video I'm new to pike fishing and this is by far the best video I've seen on RUclips Great tips thank you so much
That’s very nice of you to say so, more pike fishing coming up later in the year for pike. 🎣👊🏻
@@AdyWoodchucker can you recommend a good beginner bite alarms please?
@@sweeneyTodd-de4by for rear drop offs I have used them all and Billy’s back biters are as good as they get.
@@AdyWoodchucker ok sound how about front alarms? You on Facebook
Yes buddy, Ady Woodchucker 😉
This is fantastic information
Glad you enjoyed it 👍
Great video Ady. 😎
Importance of a suitable sized lead explained perfectly. 👏🏻👏🏻
I only use front alarms (with rear drop off arm) but I always have the alarm tight to an eye to avoid line skip. I also leave the bobbin 3-4" below the spool so I get 3 or 4 beeps before it pings off. (Unlike drop off alarms which, as you explained, need to be tight to the spool. 😉)
Very good educational video. Keep up the good work mate. 😎
Scott Kelly Cheers Scott, I am glad you liked the video please have a look at the rest and happy new year 👍
Really good video helping to learn a lot, hope to get the alarms and get some use while its still season!
Marcus Chapman cheers Marcus, best of luck in the competition 👌
Absolute class video 👍👌👌🎣
Harvey Beardsworth thank you so much, the float faint video will be out very shortly 😎
No problem byyy far the most in depth pike video I've seen can't wait for next video 👍
Good video Ady with some excellent advice for newcomers. Would second your comments about the PAC and attending regional meetings especially for those with little experience of pike. Subscribed.
Liam Curtin Cheers Liam, the meetings are great and I have made some great lads when I have done talks and attended them. You are in the draw buddy 👍

Daniel Wine Cheers buddy and happy new year 🎉🍾🎉
Great video for a beginner like me, thanks 👍
Glad you enjoyed it Anthony, tight lines and enjoy your piking.
Great tip on the heavy lead weights! I’ll be trying that this winter. Have been using 1-2oz weights because of shallow water but had lots of bites and missed them all
Dirk Van Nieuwenhove you will be amazed how positive the bites will be compared to the 1-2oz weights. The problem with lighter weights is that pike pick them up and move around with them so you may as well go for an in-line lead but you will get lots of drop backs so beware.
Ady Woodchucker I purchased a wooden handmade drop-back indicator without an alarm (needs to be positioned on the steel bar of the actual beeper) but my front bait indicator has an alarm on on it. I usually fish with two rods: one on the bottom and one more actively with a float (either pencil with the weight on the bottom or pear-shaped floats as light as possible so 10-15g leadweights for active drift fishing) because I fish 2-4’ deep peat bog drains. Kind of spreading the options, trying to see what works. But I did pick up a lot of good tips from your video that I really need to try to up my hook ratio! Thanks for sharing!
Dirk Van Nieuwenhove my pleasure, glad you enjoyed it 😉
Yeah I upped to 4oz and it really pays off.
Great educational video lads 👌

Brilliant video mate and I'm defo going with heavier leads from now on , I do you use back drop off indicators with front alarms. But that really surprised me the amount of movement with 2oz leads.very informative video for sure. I'm not sure how to add screenshot thou but it's done lol. Only one thing I can be critical about is that you carried the fish back to the water by hand and not in net. But honestly mate I really enjoyed that vid cheers
Brendan Jordan thank you for the feedback buddy, it makes you think doesn’t it 👍 you are in the draw 👍
Great stuff based on clear common sense.
Thank you Tony I am glad you enjoyed it 👍
Great video and very helpful. I've been lure fishing for a while now but I'm gathering "stuff" to give deadbaiting a go. Soon be ready, just need a couple of drop back alarms. Not sure where to put the screenshot though.
Tony B hi Tony, first of all thank you for subscribing to the channel. Like you I was a lure angler first but after a couple of seasons I decided to get a bait setup and the results came pretty quickly. I tend to use bait when the rivers have no clarity because I would always lure fish if the conditions are right so get yourself the kit and get out and give it a go 👍 you are in the draw 👍
A good video but the one indication you left out was your eyes, i use back and front indication but the times I have been watching the tips and seen these go before anything else, it`s always worth watching.
Les Clark not with a 4oz lead you don’t, anything less you will see the top go first especially when your bait isn’t in a perfect line to your rods👍
I usually use a 2oz lead but think i will go up to a 3oz even for close work, good educational vid for beginners
william murray glad you enjoyed it William, it definitely makes you think doesn’t it 👍 and you are in the draw 👌
Very informative, I dont bait fish because im not that patient :P good to see you teaching the apprentice how to hold baby :P

Subscribed great video as I’m only starting out 👍
PIKER 15 Glad you enjoyed and don’t be afraid to ask any questions 👍
All good stuff, although I think two alarms is a bit overkill. Is there a reason for not float fishing at such short range?
Jorvik Angler patience my friend, float fishing is next 😉
That’s an amazing vid Ady especially for beginner pike anglers such as myself subscribed too late to win the alarms but liked shared and subscribed all the same thanks again
fishlegs100 thank you for the kind words buddy and I am glad you liked the video, have a look around and enjoy 👍
First I push the swivel end of the trace right through the tail so the bait's hanging from the trace by the tail. Then slide down to the hooks and connect the trace to the link swivel that way the bait won't come off.
Perfect for soft baits 👍
Very good video will be using heavy leads now, liked and shared and subscribed but haven't got a clue on where to put the photo.... Sorry! Keep up the good work

Hi Geoff and thank you for subscribing. Yes the handsome one is still catching a few nice ones and unfortunately me and Paul have gone our separate ways, I caught him going through my underwear drawer and that's just not acceptable :)
Hi I whuld like to fish a fast running water ( Tidal Thames ) how should I do it is it possible to hold bottom in such a fast running water ? Is using a float and constantly recasting my only option?
Karol Krasicki even tidal waters have areas or slacks that are out of the main flow and chances are this is where the pike will be, find the slacks and you will
Find the Pike.
@@AdyWoodchucker thank you hard to find any spot in the city to be honest Thames has very high and steep banks
The only fishing I'm doing at the moment is lures when the water is at highest level or while it's at the lowest level by going down the ladders which is risky
Karol Krasicki might be time to fish away from the city Karol, try get to the middle reaches for slower pace water.
Ady nice vid, and some real good key points in there. The underwater vids of fish feeding are really helpful, over the last few years there getting better and better gives us anglers a real look into bait presentation and feeding habits. And your lead weight insight is very helpful I'm deffo weighting up alitte from now on.
Great vid keep them comming.
I have fox front alarms and the fox rear drop indicators but never thought about rear alarms aswell.
danny weir cheers Danny, really glad you liked the video and I am glad it made you look at your own setup, hope it helps 👍
I love this fish, who doesn’t, I wonder how many people don’t fish for them due to lack of confidence- it’s why I don’t.
It really is a confidence thing, ideally go with someone who knows what they are doing if it still worries you and then give it a go.
@@AdyWoodchucker the river Ancholme near me use to be buzzing with Pike anglers, no more so it seems? But met a good lad there once who let me hold and return one of his catches. 👍🏻
@@BettySwollocks13 And that's how it all begins. The reason I have ran so many Pike helper days is purely down to the fact that I want to protect the Pike, anybody can catch one but handling them correctly is the key to the future. shud of filmed the pick up and the alarm as pike picked up to show the alarm work
Hi Dave, Glad you enjoyed the video. The strike time is a lot to do with the size of the baits used, as you can see from the video no matter the size of bait I never put a look further than halfway down the bait with gives you the extra seconds to strike and 99% of all my hooked fish are in the scissors.
