Handling Pike

- I have been asked by Andrew Wilkins who is one of the bailiffs for Doncaster and District Angling Association to make a quick video on how to handle Pike safely so here it is. This was actually made on the boat and the fish is handled on a wet carpet rather than the usual unhooking mat because I do not usually bring them in the boat but it will help you understand the sharp toothy part of the Pike and how to lift them safely.

I love Pike, it's such a beautiful fish. I always release everything over 3kg, and eat everything under. Beautiful to catch and cook once you learn the art of handling and cooking them! Big Pikes are super important for the local ecosystem as well, they keep the lake/pond/river healthy.
Love from Finland
I couldn’t eat one, the take, the fight a d the release is why I go fishing for. I am told that it’s a nice meat but very boney.
@@AdyWoodchucker I think there is nothing wrong with eating pikes from sustainable population and within the "right" size range :) It's always local, organic, free range and suffers a lot less than your average chicken/pig/cow from your local supermarket. I guess the relationship with nature is pretty different between where I live and Ireland! I also think that fish populations here are quite a bit larger and can sustain constant loss of fish for food. 👍🏻
@@sendaaja8809 I am in Sweden in a few weeks for a sales meeting at CWC headquarters so hopefully I will manage to get out with the guys, I have missed Sweden ❤️
I said to myself “Every time I release a pike they splash water back and hit me in the face. I wonder this one didn’t……oh…….there it is.”
I think its just their way of saying goodbye :)
Thank you for this video, I’m new to fishing and haven’t been fishing by myself yet due to not being confident handling pike. I’m gonna go for the first time today
Glad you enjoyed it, how did the fishing go?
Been fishing pike alot lately and caught my first big one yesterday, so this is going to be very good to know for future reference

Glad you enjoyed it Steve
Beautiful fish , she got her own back with the tail splash 😃
james.chester. Cheers, it’s a small price to pay but to be honest the weather was shocking so I was already soaked to the skin.
thanks man, these bigger sized pike are not easy task to handle out of a kayak, especially without a net lol.
I have literally hand landed 1000’s of pike over the years on the boat but I still couldn’t fish without a net just in case a fish of a lifetime came along.
@@AdyWoodchucker It is certainly a disadvantage without a proper net, especially in a kayak for both the health of the pike and myself lol. My kayak isn't really design for fishing but it gets the job done.. Where are you fishing out of, is that a northern English accent? Im in Northern Minnesota and have had some decent pike in my life but i know there are bigger to be had, and the net would be a necessity for that!
@@NitroBoarder17 yes I am in Wakefield which is in West Yorkshire, gods country :)
nice vidéo
Bekedfishing Thank you 👍
Nice video! Does it hurt the fish when you touch the gill (red part)?
Not at all, it’s the white part that they gills attach to that is like a razor blade.
@@AdyWoodchucker thanks !
Why dont people wear cut resistant gloves to land the fish?
@@v1tam1ns personally I prefer to feel the hooks with my fingers when chinning pike because at least I know where they are. If you have gloves you can get the points stuck in the glove and then you are in trouble.
Which model Hummingbird did u change to mate??
Aidy # 80 Hi Aidy, I went with the Helix 10 gen3 and it’s amazing, it will definitely put fish in the boat this season
Nice one... side imaging looks to be a real game changer
Aidy # 80 some of the shots I have taken so far look amazing, have a look
On my insta or Facebook page 😉
The less handling the better.
🙄 Ady can thee please clarify to thee masses tiss thumb on thee jaw of bone not thee membrain , as thee membrain twill popp like a hymen tiff thee fish shakes , tagged plenty of fish twere Freddy thee thumb has popped through ..!!!👍👍
I always run my thumb along the membrane and then hold the jaw.
Like a hymen! 😮 😂. So true that the membranes get damaged far too often. Especially on jacks when as they’re so thin. Apparently they don’t heal either.
Thanks so much. Now I know why I was bleeding like crazy today. 😂🩸
I’m a bass slayer. I rarely catch pike. I caught a nice one today and wanted a photo…did it all wrong. Ouch.
Watch them fingers 🤣
