  • I have been asked by Andrew Wilkins who is one of the bailiffs for Doncaster and District Angling Association to make a quick video on how to handle Pike safely so here it is. This was actually made on the boat and the fish is handled on a wet carpet rather than the usual unhooking mat because I do not usually bring them in the boat but it will help you understand the sharp toothy part of the Pike and how to lift them safely.

    I love Pike, it's such a beautiful fish. I always release everything over 3kg, and eat everything under. Beautiful to catch and cook once you learn the art of handling and cooking them! Big Pikes are super important for the local ecosystem as well, they keep the lake/pond/river healthy.
    Love from Finland

      I couldn’t eat one, the take, the fight a d the release is why I go fishing for. I am told that it’s a nice meat but very boney.

      @@AdyWoodchucker I think there is nothing wrong with eating pikes from sustainable population and within the "right" size range :) It's always local, organic, free range and suffers a lot less than your average chicken/pig/cow from your local supermarket. I guess the relationship with nature is pretty different between where I live and Ireland! I also think that fish populations here are quite a bit larger and can sustain constant loss of fish for food. 👍🏻

    thanks man, these bigger sized pike are not easy task to handle out of a kayak, especially without a net lol.

      I have literally hand landed 1000’s of pike over the years on the boat but I still couldn’t fish without a net just in case a fish of a lifetime came along.

      @@AdyWoodchucker It is certainly a disadvantage without a proper net, especially in a kayak for both the health of the pike and myself lol. My kayak isn't really design for fishing but it gets the job done.. Where are you fishing out of, is that a northern English accent? Im in Northern Minnesota and have had some decent pike in my life but i know there are bigger to be had, and the net would be a necessity for that!

    Nice video! Does it hurt the fish when you touch the gill (red part)?

    • @AdyWoodchucker
      @AdyWoodchucker  Год назад

      Not at all, it’s the white part that they gills attach to that is like a razor blade.

    Why dont people wear cut resistant gloves to land the fish?

    • @AdyWoodchucker
      @AdyWoodchucker  15 дней назад

      @@v1tam1ns personally I prefer to feel the hooks with my fingers when chinning pike because at least I know where they are. If you have gloves you can get the points stuck in the glove and then you are in trouble.

      Like a hymen! 😮 😂. So true that the membranes get damaged far too often. Especially on jacks when as they’re so thin. Apparently they don’t heal either.
