    These are all the right ways to handle fish, but I'd like to point out that beginning fishers may want to use a pair of simple work gloves to feel safer handling fish (preferably a durable thermoplastic type).

      Gloves will remove the slime coat off a fish and if you release it, fish might be in trouble. Best method is a wet hand and these techniques.

    You should show how to hold Pike or walleye. When I first caught a pike I had to have my cousin hold his body and tail while I held his bottom jaw open with pliers and used another pair of pliers to grab the hook. I'm a bit more experienced in handling teeth now but it's usually intimidating to first timers.

      late reply but yeah if you care about the fish and want other people to catch it its best to wet your hands so you don't rub off the slime coat
      Their slime coat is the first layer of defense for infections of all kinds much like our skin is
      If you're netting them in make sure your net is wet as well (which is usually always is if you're getting the fish out of water)

    How long can a fish be out of the water before you gotta worry about it suffocating?

    • @TheOhioDNR
      @TheOhioDNR  6 лет назад +1

      Generally, it depends on the species of fish and water temperatures. Sensitive species (i.e. trout) don’t handle air exposure as well as hardier species (i.e. catfishes). Air exposure is least detrimental to all fishes when water temperatures are cool (fish can be out of the water longer) but even short term air exposure (60 seconds) can result in significant mortality when water temperatures are warm.
      The general rule for handling fish is to keep them in water as much as you can (keep the fish in the water when removing the hook for example) and minimize air exposure as much as possible (take 1 picture instead of 5) if you’re planning on releasing a fish.

      @BigLiquidRichard 7 лет назад +3

      They dont have scales like normal fish that you would think of. Their scales are very small and smooth the body of the fish almost feels like skin instead of scaly. trout are very sensitive to begin with and when you handle them with dry hands it removes the protective slime off of their body and makes them much more susceptible to death even after release. its good practice to just make sure your hands are wet/ damp before grabbing any trout.

    Biggest fear is that it will be stuck far inside the fish's mouth. I remember fishing as a kid once and I couldn't get the hook out because so far in. I ended pulling out entrails of the fish. I was traumatized after that and stopped fishing all together.
    There is one thing to eat a fish for food (humanely kill it quick and painless). There is another to brutally murder a fish just to take out a hook.

      It you’re keeping it to cool definitely keep it hooked when you kill it then remove when it’s dead

      Yeah, I guess killing it instead of leaving the hook (which will slowly kill it) is the probably the best way, worst case scenario.

    I’m thinking what if I just kill the fish first and then get it out from the fish hook

      What’s the point of removing the hook if it’s dead. (Unless you’re keeping to cook.)

    why not with a dry hand?

      During catch and release, use wet hands to reduce the risk of rubbing too much of the slime layer off. Adversely, when touched with dry hands, the natural coating is likely to rub off the fish leaving them exposed disease.

    Isn’t he holding the fish wrong right off the bat? I’ve heard hanging a fish like that can stretch out their spines an kill them eventually?

    Dont lie. Who else is scared as fuck of being stung trying to hold a fish?
