    My buddies and I used to fish strictly for pike (for many years). The best lures for us were spinnerbaits (not the inline type), spoons (daredevle or knockoffs), and the husky jerk (HJ-14). All worked great. But the husky jerk was the most dependable of them all. That pause and suspension like you said, was irresistible. We'd even test the husky jerk out in a fish tank before using, to make sure it suspended perfectly. If it tended to rise up at all, we'd use something called Suspendots by Storm, little lead stickers that you could add onto the bait to weigh it down ever so slightly. I can't wait to get back into fishing again.

      Same thing here, big spinners and jerk baits for 99% of fish.

      To stop Suspendots to fall off, I 5min-epoxy coat them. Did that to the StikePro Busterjerks.

      I’ve also exclusively fished for pike for a handful of years now, and once ya know how to properly work a spoon nothing beats it. They hit as it as it slowly falls every time and it’s so satisfying.

      Just started pike fishing and its so weird i always get the opposite, the go after the pause. Its like the pause gets them interested but the go triggers that bite, either way I feel like I've finally perfected my spoon jigging. Feels good to catch fish consistently.

    All great lures. I've been switching out all my treble hooks for doubles on my lures. They're easier to remove, faster to remove, and less damaging to the fish. And I've noticed no reduction in the number of fish I catch.

    Big spinner baits, with a paddle tail or mister twister thread on the hook. Beefs up the spinner even more, put a big blade on it for that extra vibration. Pike crush it!!

    Great video. I have caught my largest pike on spinners in Canada. Good numbers on Williams Wablers and little Cleos. Often I go to them when the bite is slow, and they seem to deliver... I agree that the jerk baits are the most fun to fish; especially since the strike almost always comes on the pause! They are much more versatile that top water baits, but have the same excitement!
    Thanks

    Well, like I told you today, I haven't fished in a long, long, long time myself (like 35 years) BUT when my dad took me out in the old days for me it was always the good old red devil. I bought my kids one when they were small and I bought my grandson one (painted with a Canada flag) when we took him camping with us. I always cast and tried to see how far I could send that thing. Funniest time was out with my dad and there was a circle of about 5 boats in an open area near a marsh. Everyone was fishing along the edges of the marsh and well, I was casting into the middle of them all. Lo and behold I caught a desent sized pike and that fish dragged my lure around all over the place and my line got tangled in with the lines out of at least three of the boats. My dad was a hollerin' telling everyone to reel in their lines and trying to help me at the same time bring that pike in but that fish got away. It musta been bigger than I thought at the time cause he was pretty mad at all of them. Looking back at it in my memory I though it was hilarious and one of those memories to treasure as he laughed about it afterwards as well. Yup. Red devil all the way dude. It's got my vote.

    Great video man! I have to agree with your top choice, I just caught 2 pike yesterday on a fire tiger pattern Rapala Husky Jerk bait. At least it looked like that one, mine has 3 treble hooks and it suspends but slowly floats if I leave it sit for awhile. Like you said, perfect for cruising the tops of weed beds and not getting hung up. I got some 8" bull dawgs to try this year, I haven't been able to fish them much yet. Hoping they produce a monster! God bless you, tight lines!

    It's so funny, the biggest one I ever caught was on a tiny crappie jig! I've thrown and had success with bigger baits (spoons, rapalas, top water baits) but these predators tend to break the whole bigger baits means bigger fish. They'll eat anything lol n that day my lunker I got was after a lil appetizer not interested in the big meal.

  • @bushleague3472
    @bushleague3472 Год назад

    Top 3 for me would be spoons, spinnerbaits, and dead baits. I switch out the treble for a single on my spoons, and use various plastic trailers to alter the action, speed, and running depth. I dont pack Canadian Wigglers all year, but in early spring I've always got a couple. They suck around weeds, but over shallow rocks they are great. Something about that brass lip smacking off the bottom seems to set pike off, and for whatever reason they rarely seem to snag on rocks, unlike most other lures.

    • @rodbelding9523
      @rodbelding9523 7 месяцев назад

      Yeah honestly dead baiting for pike works better than anything else. Pike are more or less bottom feeders half the time, I never really realized that until I started catching them on cut bait when I was catfishing.

    • @bushleague3472
      @bushleague3472 7 месяцев назад

      Interesting, dead baits seem to work best for me early, when they are concentrated around spawning locations. Once they scatter I have better results covering more water with lures. I drift my bait under a float, and periodically work the float like a topwater to get their attention. Also had good luck flatlining the bait, no float or sinker, like a very slow jerk bait, maybe even letting it sit several minuets between twitches. I find using a float improves my hookup percentage though.

  • @evanwatkinson5541
    @evanwatkinson5541 Год назад

    i personally love using bigger buck tails and musky lures latter in the summer. I cought a 45 inch pike in lake of the woods a week ago. I really don't know what to use in the spring though

    • @bushleague3472
      @bushleague3472 Год назад

      Real early I do best with big dead baits under a float, in back bays with a mud bottom and cattail shore. As the water warms I move to rocky shallow flats, and I mean really shallow... enough that the winter ice has carved the rocks up into bars and troughs, which is the best cover until the weeds come in. The fish are scattered so covering more ground with a Wiggler or spoon will out produce bait.
      My favorite is when the water warms up just enough to wet wade. You can cover a lot of ground from shore, the weeds are just starting to come in, and any time you start snagging a little of that first weedy peach fuzz, you can bet there are some decent pike concentrated around it.
      One day last spring I spent the day wade fishing several km of shoreline with only limited luck, about mid afternoon I started getting a little bit of weeds on my hook. I slowed down and started trying different lures, when I tried a 5/8 oz blue and silver Len Thompson things took right off, I ended up catching almost a dozen pike between 36 and 42" in just a couple hours, all in less than 100 yards of shoreline.

    Good list almost mirrors mine. But my largest pike a 47 came on a # 5 Mepp’s. Red/white blade and white dressed tail.
    The double bladed Mepp’s #5 are awesome as well.
    You can made your spoons more weed less buy changing hook to a single and you can put a small twister on or fly. Just trim them down so the spoon runs correctly.
    Mann’s Minus -1 5/8oz 3 1/4 inch casts well runs shallow and displaces a lot of water the fish key in on it.
    Colors white Yellow and Firetiger are what works why pike attack from below and what’s the color of the prey there attacking belly’s whitefish white, Walleye’s yellow, perch Firetiger.
    On your Swim bait on the weighted hook paint them Red on the lead weight.

    • @bushleague3472
      @bushleague3472 Год назад

      That bit about dressing your spoons with plastic is a great tip. Probably my favorite candidate is a 3/4 oz Williams spoon, with a single hook and a 3" Mr Twister it runs true, a 4" twister will overload it a bit and make it plane towards the surface... but you can work it shallow and slow with lots of twitches to good effect. If you use a 4" double tail it will plane on the surface like a topwater. Deadly if you drag it across weedbeds and let it flutter down into the pockets.

    My favourite lake is about 150 miles north of Lake Superior. I use a white Rapala and catch giant pike walleye and whitefish. The main pray for these large fish is small whitefish. My girlfriend tried every lure I have (I have lots of lures) and nothing catches them like the white Rapala.

    I've caught a lot of pike on crankbaits specifically ones that rattle really loud

      Spinners and lipless crank baits destroy pike. Specifically rattle traps that really vibrate. The only lake around me that has pike is a 107 acre flood control reservoir that gets overfished a lot during hard water season. Managed to catch two 30 inch 6 pounders the last two times I’ve been their on rattle traps, the key is to fish them hard and fast to really get them to vibrate and attract pike.

    In my opinion, a pike minnow lure works pretty well, the pike hammer it, so do musky

      Yeah, I've had my best paddle tail pike action on a big 7 incher. Also, oddly, big pike and 'eyes often hit a smallish (3 inch, I think) bluegill swim shad. Dunno what it is about that swim shad, but it'll catch anything that can eat it.

    Kinda weird, but my PB is on a chartreuse yamasenko 5”, I don’t know why but I’ve been slaying with that. Downside is that you have to replace the plastic every 2-3 fish

      My best lure is the #5 mepps red and white, I go to gander bay out of swaton vt. And 8 to 10 lb pike are no problem. I have been going there for 33 years in a row as of this year,

    If youre still active how do you feel about little cleo spoons mine I got is half bright light blue and half glow in the dark. Id appreciate you're opinion. I'm great with trout but this summe I'm going for pike and bass and it's new territory but i have some knowledge. I picked up a panther sonic wpinner and a few different colored mepps aglias in various sizes and also got a few feog lures of various sizes amd kinds, one spnner frog that makes it look like it swims and splashes, one super realistic one, one big realisistic popping frog, and one small popping frog. Mostly just want opinjons on the color choice ofnmy cleo and chances of cafching bass or pike woth the aglias or cleos. Thank you in advance if you get to me 🙏

    Eppinger Red & White Dardevle 1.5 oz nickel is my "stranded on a desert island" lure. I've caught just about every freshwater species on it: largemouth, walleye, Northerns, and even perch! Make sure you use the real Eppingers and not cheap imitations -- they don't have the same action. They can be cast, trolled, and even jigged.

    I appreciate your knowledge, but as a novice myself, I had a really hard time keeping track of what you were saying. You said the names of the lures very quickly, not always distinctly. I found them later in your notes but had to map them back to the video to understand which ones were which.
