    I live in Manitoba. We used to have massive pike in some spots in the southern basin of lake Winnipeg, especially in the 70’s. We used red devil spoons, and brought in some whoppers. They were so big in one area, we used to avoid it.

      Exactly, gold 3/4 Cleo or similar . Agressive reel, stop ,for second . Beats anything on sunny day hands down.

      i agree 100 percent. the 3/4 ounce little cleo is my favorite pike lure. i figure i have caught 6000 pike and i use the little cleo most of the time. my favorite is the silver/orange one but i really don't think it matters.

  • @Cannibal_Actual
    @Cannibal_Actual 6 лет назад +3

    Yes I agree with everyone of your picks, another honorable mention that works for me as a last ditch to get some fish in is a 5" zoom fluke. One of the best colors for me, I know it sounds funny because nothing in nature is this color, bubble gum pink. I even pulled big walleyes off Devils Lake with those while pike fishing.

    • @nemo5335
      @nemo5335 6 лет назад

      well, i don't think we're entirely sure as to what fish actually see, so a lot of lures in strange colors may look quite different to their eyes. add the refraction off the water and it gets even more complicated. i have really good luck on purple heavy flake and bright chartreuse worms, and that's another one that has no natural analogue.

    Hey, listen..... I really appreciate your telling the sizes of those baits. I live way out in the country and I only get to a large city about 3-4 times a year. So, I order a lot of stuff through the mail. Its hard for me to tell the sizes of things. Your telling me its a #5 or whatever takes the guess work out of it. THANK YOU!!

    I'm just getting back into fishing. I used to fish exclusively for pike (the bass up in NY don't get big). I recall 3 lures were pretty much mainstays for me: Spoons (Daredevil or knockoff versions), Spinnerbaits (not the Inline type) and the Rapala Husky Jerk. The Husky Jerk was so deadly. They couldn't resist. We used to put Suspend Dots on the lure, testing it in an aquarium to make sure it suspended perfectly. We'd replace the treble hooks with the Gamakatsu brand treble. Good times.

    My most productive lure by far has been the storm 6" Wild-eye Live Pike. I've tried other swim baits with much less success, but the biggest pike I've hooked (a really big one lost at boat side) was with a micro-dawg. The storm pike casts like a rocket and is idiot proof (which helps in my case).
    For some reason, I have not had success with the Dardevle spoons or other spoons. The only spoon I've had success with is the 1oz Mepps Syclops spoon and I tend to catch more bass than pike; although I do catch pike with it. I think that my spoon technique maybe of a bit off for pike. Next trip I will experiment with letting the Dardevle spoons fall to the bottom and near bottom more and jerking/cranking it up and letting it fall more erratically.
    I've also had times when the pike are hitting spinners so much that there doesn't seem to be any reason to switch up to another bait.
    I've had some success with jerk baits, but for me the swim baits are so much easier to cast and fish that jerk baits and crank baits are at the end of the queue for me. They are just too much work; although, I will try them a little just to mix it up a little for fun.

    • @KurtHBenner
      @KurtHBenner  8 лет назад +3

      +Bill Jackson - Same as I would any other pike lure. I use 14lb mono to a 12in wire leader (I use titanium - less kinks). I buy the leaders that use the cross-lok snap as I feel it is stronger and I want to be quick to change lures if I need to. I attach the lure right to the snap. Good luck on your trip - heading up to Northern Manitoba myself in about 6 weeks. Looks like an early ice-out so depending on when you go the Pike may already be heading to some slightly deeper water if the cabbage starts to spring up early.

    I can not believe the success I have had this summer in Northwestern Wisconsin throwing a 3 Foot depth Squarebill. The Pike just hammer them. The brand does not matter, dirt cheap or high dollar. They smack them all. I have actually had monster open the split rings and loose the fish. All of a sudden My lure comes flying back at me with no hooks. Crazy year. I have fishes this lake every weekend in open water season for 14 years and the have never hit this hard. I cast in the Whitest Squarebill I can find. Bass like it too but I have to use a wire leader to hang onto the lure.

    Pretty close to my results, especially at the top. Lately my top lures have been the bigger and chunkier Rapala X-Rap Jointed Shad and Husky Jerk, but I've also done great on the 12cm X-Raps. Swimbaits are also effective, and can be worked through cover if rigged properly, which can be huge casting right along reeds.

    My top 3 would be spoons, spinner baits, and F18 size Rapala's. For spoons I like 3/4 oz Len Thompsons in orange and yellow patterns, and 3/4 Williams spoons in gold and silver. I switch out the trebles for singles, and often add various plastic trailers to change the running speed/ depth, or even get them to plane on top. IMO nothing can touch spoons for versatility, durrability, and consistency but spinnerbaits are pretty close.

Id have two or three in the tackle box. Try Devils Lake or Lake Sakakawea monster pikes there and no Passport needed. I also custom paint blank jerk baits specifically for the lake I fish. • @KurtHBenner
      @KurtHBenner  5 лет назад +1

      Thanks for the question. Pike are hunting voracious eaters. You'll know quickly if they are in a lake. That said, they prefer cool water that will produce a lot of vegetation in the summer. Usually pike will head to shallow areas of a lake after ice-out to warm themselves but head to deeper colder water in late June as the vegetation grows and wait in the weeds to catch prey. I would also search pike lakes in your area on google and see if that will guide you. Good Luck!

    I have a 5 dressed, and a Johnson silver minnow,how would the minnow fare

    • @KurtHBenner
      @KurtHBenner  4 года назад

      The silver minnow will do well in early or late season Pike fishing and will perform much better than the dressed #5 spinner in the late season as the silver minnow is weedless and will get through the cabbage with ease. Here's a tip: add a white twister tail to the silver minnow. It makes the lure even more appealing to a hungry Pike.

    What are the best lures for open deep water

    • @KurtHBenner
      @KurtHBenner  8 лет назад +1

      Define deep... Northern Pike go deep looking for cooler water in the summer. But they also look for cabbage (weeds) to hide in waiting for bait fish to swim by, so open water may be more difficult to catch them. I don't think I've ever gone deeper than 25ft however I've heard of pike as deep as 40-50ft deep. As far as lures, I'd use big spoons that will drop quickly to the depth you want. Kastmasters or 5 of Diamonds would be my first choice. If you have weeds then use the Johnson silver minnow (weedless) - size would be in the 1 1/2oz. If you are looking for Lake Trout then same lures but bigger. Good Luck!!

    I was hoping to learn here lol storms are garbage, frogs are for weeds... rappala dare devils and poppers are in everyone's tackle box, those storm lures are garbage lol. Only sure way was the mepps with buck tail absolutely the best sure fire way to land pike.

    Nice video however you will need a lot of those to go fishing in Wisconsin for Northern pike since they are always in very weeded areas, so snagging will become a major factor here, I would put my #1 lure as a frog that has the hook protector over it for Wisconsin Pike fishing!

    • @SeasonsAndSloan
      @SeasonsAndSloan 7 лет назад

      Milla Whatever •Well, for fishing like in heavy cover it may be the number one lure, but even in Wisconsin I'd feel better off using a jerk bait adjacent to weedline to draw northerns out of the vegetation, more hookups

    Hello. When you refer to #'s for the Daredevele's, I cannot cross reference those numbers anywhere. They are only listed by weights. I bought a fishing collection consisting of many spoons (Daredevele's)... new in the package.. 2/5oz (8 of them), 3/4oz (12 of them) and 1oz (2 of them). I usually focus on walleye and panfish for eating and bass for sport. I never used the spoons because I rarely do Pike fishing (Intentionally). A friend of mine bought a house on a lake with a decent Pike population, so I'm trying to figure out what weight/ size to use. It's southern Wisconsin, so the pike probably wont be much larger than 36" if we're lucky. That's my guess anyway... Haven't spoke to any other fishermen on the lake yet. What size would you start with... by weight? I'm guessing the 3/4oz.. I cant figure what I'd ever use the 2/5 oz ones for. Thanks!

    Box standard lures not a patch on my home made lures and spinner baits.. Put it this way when I leave my home to go on holiday my lures get locked in a safe. A true master angler uses lures evolved over generations not 5 lures bought in any sports outlet or found in any old tackle box. The 5 best lures you could ever use are those created through experience..
