Len Thompson is the king. Go 5 Diamonds
Hard to go wrong with the 5 of D!
Y'all hear that drag sounded like the drag from the Barbie fishing pole didn't it !
Hmm. Okay. Never fishing one of those before. Lol
You used two different brands of spoons, one has a silver back and the other brass, both have different actions. IMO most days the variation in action from one brand to another, even just switching sizes, is more important than the color. More significant, if your fishing a Len Thompson against a Lucky Strike the color is irrelevant, the LT will win 8 times out of 10. And most of all... Love to see that old Mitchell getting used, I have the identical setup and it still catches a ton of fish.
Fish a 3/4 oz brass Len Thompson against a gold Williams W60 Wabler and things would get interesting, IMO the LT wins more days than not, but some days that wide, slow Williams wobble is dynamite.
Thanks for your insights. The 5 of diamonds did win. But it was close. In just one day of course anything g can happen. Still it as a fun test.
I've got both color spoons, and I've NEVER caught a fish on the yellow one, but the red-and-white stripe Dardevle is one of my best lures.
The daredevil is a classic because it catches fish. The five of diamonds, in my experience, and many others who have commented, is one of the best. You should think about giving it another chance.
@@fishingrelaunched4864 I'll definitely give it another chance, as I just started fishing again after at least 15 years off. So far I've only caught one fish, and it was on a red and white Dardevle! 🙂
@@tenrec Best of luck to you. Spoons in general are good for Pike but attract other fish for sure too.
@@fishingrelaunched4864 The last fish I caught when I stopped fishing 15 years ago was a nice pickerel on the Dardevle. Last week I caught (of all things) a bullhead catfish on it!
Love you gear, the old Mitchell spinning reel. I have one also and they are awesome. More of a sport using them.
Yes that Mitchell is very old. Was my father’s. They are made to last!
Have caught many pike, and bass, and even a 47” musky and a walleye on the 5 o diamonds over the years at Nipissing. The thing catches everything! I never take it off my medium heavy baitcaster when I’m fishing there. Money!
Even use it in heavy weeds. Just replace the treble with a single Siwash hook. Comes right through and gets ‘em.
For sure! Good tip on the single hook! Oh I know the 5 of D is deadly. See my earlier video- one lure catches all fish. It features it. I even catch a catfish with it.
Before it starts I’m going to guess the 5 diamonds. I’ve always had a ton of bites on red/yellow color schemes that I predict that will be the winner.
We’ll done. 5 of D is one of my all time favourites too.
The red and yellow panther Martin seems to outfish everything else, everything seems to like that color.
Before I even saw what you were testing I said, red devil spoon.
It’s one I should fish more!
Color doesn't matter. The finish of the back is what affects results.
My experience is five of diamonds outfishes any other color combination
Definitely one of the time tested best!
You need to up your net game sir😬. I’d start by locking it in at it’s very longest point, will give you max length for those solo netting jobs. Was that an old Mitchell 300 reel I saw you with?
That was a sloppy net job. Thanks for the tip. Yes my father’s old Mitchell 300. So durable. They last and last.
Next time try two different fishing lures the lem Thompson gold and orange and the one with white and green
Not a bad idea. Two spoons from the same maker but different colours. Thanks for the suggestion.
Great video thank you!
Thanks very much!.
either way they all work. ol school lures. red/yellow red/white they all catch. y the been here for decades. all pretty much same. throw in a lil cleo spoon n compare. us sconnie fisherman know spoons for pike
Most definitely spoons are great pike catchers and any given day one can outperform the other.
should get a kayak style net if you're fishing alone, much easier to handle one handed.
Thanks for the tip.
Panther Martin OG #2!
Good lure!
Old and reliable!
Always Dave!
Idk why but if i geg an ugly stik i always put a shimano reel on it lol
Lol. They go together like bacon and eggs!
@@fishingrelaunched4864 yeah and both pretty awesome for the price point. Shimano makes awesome reels
Over yhe last60 years of fishing in Canada I have come to the conclusion that a Len Thompson black and yellow outfishes the red and yellow 5 of diamonds.
Interesting. I may have to do a fishing challenge on that one.
5 of diamonds
That could be a very good guess!
what size spoons?
Were you using a swivel? What type of line? Thanks!
I prefer to use a 40 lb fluorocarbon leader, about 18” long, tied to 20 to 30 lb braid. I think it’s a more disguised presentation than a wire leader.
What do you use for a leader setup when targeting pike with spoons?
I usually tie on a 30 or 40 lb test fluorocarbon leader onto 20 lb braid. I’ll tie a snap/swivel onto the flouro. The flouro is less visible to the fish than a wire leader. A 30-40 lb leader will handle most pike’s teeth but even heavier line if expecting big pike or musky.
I thought that was carpet in the back of the boat at first and almost cringed to death imagining it.
Lol. Glad you survived.
Five a diamond
Good guess!
Before I watch this I’m calling 5 of diamonds
I guessing that’s a good call. 👍
Daredevil
A great lure!
You are not using original Eppinger's Dardevle spoons. These are cheap knock-offs that do not have the same action or finish. Also, you will generally not catch big pike with such a small spoons (big lure for big fish). The fact that you caught pike on them is a testament to the fact that pike will hit just about anything. I remember reading a story in Boy's Life Magazine back in the 70s where someone caught one on a treble hook soldered to a brass door hinge. My All Time Best lure is the 1.5 oz red & white Eppinger Dardevle with a nickel finish.
Wait… so what you’re saying is the devil is in the details? But seriously, thanks for watching my very unscientific experiment. The 5 of diamonds was not a knockoff. It’s a genuine Len Thompson.
@@fishingrelaunched4864 Eppinger makes a red on yellow Five of Diamonds pattern, too. Try the real Eppingers...you won't be disappointed. How they shape the spoon makes all the difference, gives them a very chaotic wobble. I've always gone with the red with white stripe on nickel or pure metal nickel or brass. Since you're in CA, can you recommend a good place to get barbless hooks?
@fishingrelaunched4864 , yeah, it was a made in Canada Len Thompson, but not a made in USA Eppinger Daredevle. Just ain't the same
5 of diamonds all the way. not close.
Good guess. My favourite spoon!
Wondering where you live to fish this lake?
This is Georgian Bay, Ontario. Part of Lake Huron. Parry Sound region.
DO MAKE 5 DIAMONDS IN 12 IN ????????????
Not if 5 of D goes that big? Anyone else know?
I think a Len Thonpson #4 is the largest available.
South channel?
In and around there.
@@fishingrelaunched4864, atta boy. Great stuff 👌
