WHY Climate Responsive?
In the metropolis of Mumbai where there is constant urban growth and an uprise of development, electricity and energy resources’ consumption has shot off the charts for quite some time. At the same time, the architecture in the city hasn’t undergone any significant changes since many years and has become stagnant.
In the current scenario, the methods and means used to design buildings overlap with the key features/architectural elements used 150-200 years ago for the purpose of light, heat and ventilation. Some of these structural elements; doors, windows, verandahs, etc, were used conventionally for protecting themselves from the external climatic challenges put forth by the region. Conventionally the architecture in practice made use of the natural materials to protect themselves from the climatic challenges such as heat and intense humidity. All this was done without the use of modern day technologies such as electricity and fuel based engines. Still, the architecture thrived and survived generations. The architectural elements used to ward off the climatic problems in those times were designed for a different issue at hand because there was no vast or dense urban growth due to lesser population and migration. However, in the current scenario where there is dense urban growth in Bombay, the compact and vertical growth has lead to the formation of certain heat pockets throughout the city which in turn cause serious heat spikes and climatic issues for the residents as well as the structures in this city. To solve such problems the dependency on the extensive usage of Air Conditioners has hampered the total energy and power consumption of the entire city. The architecture which was intended to adhere to the climatic challenges faced by Mumbai has in turn only led to the immense uprise of power consumption.
In this case, when conventional climate responsive elements do not serve the optimum and desired purpose, the dependence on mechanical systems and energy resources is paramount.
This is done so as to obtain and maintain the desired conditions inside the structure.
Hence, there be a need for a Climate Responsive and Performative Design System.
