this song was played at my sons funeral service. Jacob Raul Hernandez. I was the one brought it to his attention and we found it in his music collection after his death. I will always cherish this song and it will always remind me of him. I love you very much my beautiful lad and one day I will see you again. forever and ever your loving father, Dean. x

I ain't too sure that these are actually the real mother-fuckin' lyrics? I mean, it takes a helluva imagination to go from 'Highlight Of The Day' (which, btw, I've been singing for the past 25 years or so) to 'Nine Night Of Matter' which according to this are the correct words? I ain't buyin' it an' I ain't havin' it! Gonna Wiki it!

Had quite the surreal moment with this song. I used to live in Florida. There was a park with a little beach I used to go to if my shift got me out early enough. Pandora was my traveling partner. One day got to this place with about 40 minutes to spare. So I chilled its was nine inch nails artist radio. As the sun finally started to set this song came on. I've never seen something fit into a moment as perfectly as this song did.

I think it's probably about the definition of love itself". "Love, love is a verb, love is a doing word" - "teardrop on the fire, fearless on my breath". Love being a conscious struggle etc., instead of an emotion like infatuation. A lot of pain involved and all that. Probably depends on the listener, since each of us interprets things differently.

_Fraser wrote the song's lyrics. While recording the song on May 29th, 1997, she found out that her once-close friend, Jeff Buckley had drowned. "That was so weird ... I'd got letters out and I was thinking about him. That song's kind of about him - that's how it feels to me anyway."_

As a man who -eventually- married a beautiful woman who I never thought I could win and having 5 children and soon to be 8 grandchildren I fully understand your explanation / interpretation. We have been married 35 years and 1 day as I write this. I had to be "fearless on my breath" when I was 17 :-)

I've been watching House again, and had to listen to the theme song since I've never actually heard it in full before. As soon as the vocals hit, I thought "Is that Liz Frasier from the Cocteau Twins?" Turns out I was right! I got into CT a year-and-a-half ago, and I love them. I thought this song was very reminiscent f their stuff.

I hate how people are arguing about the meaning of the songs lyrics rather than appreciating what an amazing song it is. Liz Frasier is an amazing singer and songwriter, the voice of an angel. I think she never had a predetermined meaning for these lyrics and simply wrote what came to her after massive attack gave her the track. All time classic tune, beautiful.

I don't know if has been posted here already or not, but the song is about being in love with someone who cannot hear it, due to death. It's hard when you lose someone you love, which is what the lyricist Elizabeth Fraser was feeling when she lost her good friend Jeff Buckley. This is what I believe is the analysis of the song.

This song is not about an abortion! If you’re going to put this on youtube do a modicum of research and get to know the person who wrote the song. Elizabeth Fraser (that’s her name) has spoken about the song in various interviews.

Actually... song is not about abortion, but a love of a mother to her unborn yet child.
Creator of song said that find this state paradoxical and fascinating:
loving someone despite not yet meeting that person.

The last dance lead me to this song sung by Jose Gonzalez's (done very well), then a sugg from that version lead me here. Both very well done & diff point of views on the meaning of song. I'd recommend the jose version as well🙏✌

This song is not about abortion. She was waiting near a river as they were searching for her ex-lovers body....who died in a water rafting incident. She was crying over the fire as they waited till morning to restart the search. She had had cross words with him before he died...and so her crying into the fire are the most faithful statements of how she really felt about him. See wikipedia

final line - He was tumbling in the tow (of the boat on the Mississipi River that unexpectedly washed over Jeff causing him to drown) Definitely not about abortion. This is a song to life and it's bravery. I like to alternate "fearless on my breath" with "feel the summer, pray" and the last line before the outro "teardrop on the fire, fade in summer, pray", RIP Scotty aka Jeff. But each to their own and whatever cranks your tractor. Black flowers live forever (or I bloody well hope so!)

"Fraser wrote the song's lyrics, inspired by the works of French philosopher Gaston Bachelard". Wikipedia.
So, stop writing bullshit about it. It is not about her (dead) friend.

"Nine-Night, also known as Dead Yard, is a funerary tradition originating in Africa ... It is an extended wake that lasts for several days, with roots in African religious tradition. During this time, friends and family come together to the home of the deceased. They share their condolences and memories while singing hymns and eating food together."
