This song hit me between the eyes TWICE. First time I heard it was as part of a TV ad for the video game *_Gears of War,_* and I was so blown away with it I had to go find it. When I found the Gary Jules cover I didn't know it was a cover. I'd thought it was their composition and I was like boy did he nail the overall feel of the lyrics. Then about 15 years later I find out that it was written by Curt Smith and Roland Orizabal, and I felt embarrassed. I was in my late 20s when Tears for Fears hit it big in the U.S., and I had no idea "Mad World" was their composition -- because it never got any airplay in the U.S. where I lived. When I found that out I was REALLY floored, and listened to their version. It was more frenetic and tense, which wouldn't be out of place for a "mad world;" but I felt like the Jules/Matthews version really nailed the dark mood of the lyrics, and that version has always stuck with me. It's haunting, sad, and beautiful all at once -- and it really reaches deep down into my heart and soul.

I find it sad because nobody knows about the original song, which is much more upbeat and makes you want to dance yet have an episodic cry. "One could perceive the original video in many ways, but I perceive Curt as being the mind and Roland being the face/body of someone who lives with depression/anxiety. Curt reflects on his own feelings and anxieties from behind the walls, while Roland dances and plays outside for the world to see"
It should be like that, since it sounds way better than the original. The tempo and whole integration with the lyrics just fits much better together. No wonder it sits in top 5-10 of the saddest song by many respected tops.
It really is a very mad world. People killing each other for glory and power and money. Kids being angry because their parents won'r get them some expensive shit they want while children their age in other countries are soldiers, or starving, or they don't even have families or maybe all three and more. People talk shit about my generation (im 17) while we came to this world and all we see around us is injustice and people being unfair and cruel. Sometimes when im sad, i immagine that i've got a secret island and i can visit it whenever i want. I stay there for a couple of months living in peace in a house very close to the ocean that i built out of bamboo. It has a little net between 2 palm trees and when it's a sunny day i lay there lookin to the ocean. Then i come back to "Earth" and realize how sad i am again.

After all, people really go on to your nerves or they don't care about you. So, they don't really deserve respect. The world is mad. Nobody truly cares about you in out of you. You have the duty to take care of yourself. Whatever went wrong in the past, never mind. Don't care about people. If they come too close to you and you feel annoyed or uncomfortable, you have to prevent it by not letting them get too close. Do what is morally justified and very appropriate. Anything else isn't much of importance.

Sometimes when im sad, i immagine that i've got a secret island and i can visit it whenever i want. I stay there for a couple of months living in peace in a house very close to the ocean that i built out of bamboo. It has a little net between 2 palm trees and when it's a sunny day i lay there lookin to the ocean. Then i come back to "Earth" and realize how sad i am again.

me too when I'm depressed or just sad I imagine a world without me. I venture off into a world with no people. where I can do anything as I please. I'm gald someone else understands. the same things I just said pops up in a anime called erased. the story has beutiful storylines and anything can happen when you least expect it. the anime is heart touching and very sad but it always makes you think. it kinda challenges you to foreshadow what's gonna happen next. I hope everyone has a great day and feels safe and happy around loved ones
