I had sole custody of my daughter for 4 years before her mother finally started to get her shit together. She's not fully better, she will never be the girl I fell in love with so long ago again. And when I hear this song that line in the verse makes me think of her the way she is now, so different from that girl I fell in love with 18 years ago, and I'm still right here, not much has changed except my outlook and drive on and in life. It makes me sad to think about, but things change, can never go back, and honestly never would. I found the woman I needed, and we have 3 sons now, my daughter will actually be 14 in 2 days, and her mother has 2 sons with a 3rd on the way now. The thing I like most about Johnny Cash's cover of this song is that it almost sounds like he's simply talking. Like he's walking through memory lane and seeing all the the things he's done that hurt either himself, others, or both.

2018 has been an awful year. I lost so many friends, family, my dad passed in February, even my dog died. I'm working a dead end job, and walked out after the girl I had been seeing told me she didn't have feelings anymore. Spent some time in jail after I took charges for a friend who betrayed me. My mom chose her man over me. I had to start taking substances just to keep my sanity. I've never been so alone in my life..

I’m a recovering alcoholic/addict, I almost lost my best friend and lover because of my pain. We are now on a 1 year break while I work on my recovery. She has stuck by my side and always believed I could change. This song hits close to home because I always wanted to do better, now that I’m free I’ve never been so grateful to have a love like her.

My father had a heart attack on Dec 11, 2014 and several weeks later on Jan 8 he passed away and we buried him today on Jan 15, 2015. This was one of the songs I played at his funeral. Listening to this song it made me regret so much that we weren't closer and that we could never express our feelings and emotions to each other properly and now that he's gone I will never have that opportunity ever again. And one more regret that I will never forgive myself is that the night that he went to the hospital because of difficulty of breathing and later doctors found out that it was a heart attack, I was there with him as he was conscious and speaking and getting treatment. It was 4am and I was tired and I never thought his condition was so serious. Instead of staying with him and talking to him for longer, I stayed only for a little while and left to go home. That was the last time that he was able to speak as he had a heart operation that morning to save him and after being placed in a medically induced coma for over a week, when he finally woke up he had tubes in his mouth and all he was able to do was nod or write a few words when he was strong enough. Now I just can't get over how I wasted the last chance I ever had to talk to my dad before he died. There's so many things that I wish I could go back and change and now its too late. The only thing I can do now is to live with my mistakes and to do my best to not repeat the past from now on.
My deepest sympathies, i'm sure your father was a great man. Don't live on regrets continue on with your life my friend and then when your time comes you'll have another chance to speak to him. -Chase
Hang in there, we have all gone through this and it hurts, but with time you will go on and carry on your dad's legacy, always remember that you can always talk to him cause he is still next to you and hears you. Do not be so hard on yourself because he knows that you were there when he needed you. Yes I'm happy that I was able to spend time with him before he past away, but like I said in my orginal post, I'm just kicking myself for not staying longer that day that he first went to the hospital and was still able to speak. I guess I was fooled because he was talking and very alert and didn't seem to be in such a serious condition that he actually was and missed my last opportunity to ever speak with him again while he was alive in this world. :( That's one regret that I will have a difficult time getting over if ever.
Who cares if this is a cover? Music is more about the lyrics and instruments, it's the passion. I have listened to the original, and to this version. I choose this version. You can hear the passion in Johnny's voice, the pain, the hurt. Something that seems to be lost in music today. I think the difference between this version and the original is that this one encapsulates a lifetime of regret and sorrow, but Cash is definitely more resigned to that fact and seems to be hoping for redemption and forgiveness after he dies whereas the NIN version has so much raw, visceral emotion- especially in the chorus- that it's painful and heartbreaking to listen to. Both are fantastic, both are completely different from one another, and both performances have so much pain in them that comes through in each respective version. Neither one is better than the other, they might as well be two completely different songs 🤷♀️

Kelley McMahan my grandmother passed away 3 years ago from cancer....I never got to say goodbye because I was too much of a coward to see her in that state...I hope no one else will have to live with that guilt but I know they will...and I can't help them...because the guilt continues to make me feel terrible I've thought of suicide multiple times but I realize there's no point to it...
I think this is the best cover ever done. Not of this song, of all songs. Neither the original or this one are better than the other, but they carry vastly different meanings based on where Trent and Johnny were at the time they recorded it. And each one is deep and beautiful. I also love that Trent was super skeptical about it, but couldn't bring himself to say no to a legend like Johnny Cash, and this was the result.

Just listened to this while lying on my bed, crying more and more with every word, every guitar tune. I know there's light in the end, I just don't know if I have the strenght to leave past behind and focus on the present.
The trick isn't to leave the past behind. It's to understand how that past made you who you are now. Some of the best things that ever happened to me were horrible, or incredibly painful at the time. From every loss there is a lesson. Learn that lesson. Make peace with it. Only then can you truly accept yourself, and move forward.

Well I full heartedly agree (they're drama queens) I wouldn't call it pathetic to be hurt. I was dumped by a girl I loved, dearly.I was crushed, this was Sunday. We had been dating for nearly a year, we had been intimate, we were close. She got me in ways no one else did. I was hurt, I was torn and for a little bit I had no idea what to do. Very quickly I pulled myself together because, well I deserve better. But I get it, I do. These people are hurting, and they think they are experiencing the worst pain of their life. In the moment, it just seems that way. Especially if your so close, I can see these people doing that, but in many respects I agree, they need to MOVE ON. But DO NOT go trashing people if you have no idea what they're going through. Have some respect about how you go about saying something like this, be understanding rather than judgmental, you know? :-)
I've been through that exact thing as well! But I never had ANY desire to go and broadcast my sob story to the world, or say "My pain is massive" because that is pathetic, although I have only been through things everyone goes through, I have seen people shrug off the most drastic horrible things ever, rape... Murder, even SEEING family die, and they are able to put it behind them eventually and not ONCE did they try and make anyone feel sorry for them. REAL heroes, instead we've got people here crying about break ups... Probably the most cliche thing ever.
While I agree that some teenagers are overly dramatic about things, you can't really tell someone that they shouldn't be sad or be upset because someone else has had it worse. That's like saying you shouldn't be happy because other people have it better. I have struggled with a lot in my life, probably more than the average person, and I always fought with myself about complaining and reaching out for help because I believed that if other people had it worse then what did I have to complain about? I just receded inside of myself; I almost died, I almost ended myself. Maybe if I had complained someone would've helped me when I really needed it. Sometimes people just need a kind word directed their way, sometimes they just need to hear that it's going to be okay, sometimes they post comments because they don't have anyone to talk to in real life and hearing that other people have gone through it can make you feel better. Even people who post specifically for attention, what do you think is causing them to cry out for that kind of attention? Something is wrong in their daily life, their life isn't perfect, that would cause them to act out for attention like that. Pity them but don't hate them.

My father had a heart attack on Dec 11, 2014 and several weeks later on Jan 8 he passed away and we buried him today on Jan 15, 2015. This was one of the songs I played at his funeral.
Listening to this song it made me regret so much that we weren't closer and that we could never express our feelings and emotions to each other properly and now that he's gone I will never have that opportunity ever again.
And one more regret that I will never forgive myself is that the night that he went to the hospital because of difficulty of breathing and later doctors found out that it was a heart attack, I was there with him as he was conscious and speaking and getting treatment. It was 4am and I was tired and I never thought his condition was so serious. Instead of staying with him and talking to him for longer, I stayed only for a little while and left to go home.
That was the last time that he was able to speak as he had a heart operation that morning to save him and after being placed in a medically induced coma for over a week, when he finally woke up he had tubes in his mouth and all he was able to do was nod or write a few words when he was strong enough.
Now I just can't get over how I wasted the last chance I ever had to talk to my dad before he died. There's so many things that I wish I could go back and change and now its too late. The only thing I can do now is to live with my mistakes and to do my best to not repeat the past from now on.
My deepest sympathies, i'm sure your father was a great man. Don't live on regrets continue on with your life my friend and then when your time comes you'll have another chance to speak to him.

Thanks for your kind words. Yes I'm happy that I was able to spend time with him before he past away, but like I said in my orginal post, I'm just kicking myself for not staying longer that day that he first went to the hospital and was still able to speak.
I guess I was fooled because he was talking and very alert and didn't seem to be in such a serious condition that he actually was and missed my last opportunity to ever speak with him again while he was alive in this world. :(
That's one regret that I will have a difficult time getting over if ever.

I think the difference between this version and the original is that this one encapsulates a lifetime of regret and sorrow, but Cash is definitely more resigned to that fact and seems to be hoping for redemption and forgiveness after he dies whereas the NIN version has so much raw, visceral emotion- especially in the chorus- that it's painful and heartbreaking to listen to. Both are fantastic, both are completely different from one another, and both performances have so much pain in them that comes through in each respective version. Neither one is better than the other, they might as well be two completely different songs 🤷♀️

Kelley McMahan my grandmother passed away 3 years ago from cancer....I never got to say goodbye because I was too much of a coward to see her in that state...I hope no one else will have to live with that guilt but I know they will...and I can't help them...because the guilt continues to make me feel terrible I've thought of suicide multiple times but I realize there's no point to it...

I think this is the best cover ever done. Not of this song, of all songs. Neither the original or this one are better than the other, but they carry vastly different meanings based on where Trent and Johnny were at the time they recorded it. And each one is deep and beautiful. I also love that Trent was super skeptical about it, but couldn't bring himself to say no to a legend like Johnny Cash, and this was the result.

Well I full heartedly agree (they're drama queens) I wouldn't call it pathetic to be hurt. I was dumped by a girl I loved, dearly.I was crushed, this was Sunday. We had been dating for nearly a year, we had been intimate, we were close. She got me in ways no one else did. I was hurt, I was torn and for a little bit I had no idea what to do. Very quickly I pulled myself together because, well I deserve better. But I get it, I do. These people are hurting, and they think they are experiencing the worst pain of their life. In the moment, it just seems that way. Especially if your so close, I can see these people doing that, but in many respects I agree, they need to MOVE ON. But DO NOT go trashing people if you have no idea what they're going through. Have some respect about how you go about saying something like this, be understanding rather than judgmental, you know? :-)
I've been through that exact thing as well! But I never had ANY desire to go and broadcast my sob story to the world, or say "My pain is massive" because that is pathetic, although I have only been through things everyone goes through, I have seen people shrug off the most drastic horrible things ever, rape... Murder, even SEEING family die, and they are able to put it behind them eventually and not ONCE did they try and make anyone feel sorry for them. REAL heroes, instead we've got people here crying about break ups... Probably the most cliche thing ever.

While I agree that some teenagers are overly dramatic about things, you can't really tell someone that they shouldn't be sad or be upset because someone else has had it worse. That's like saying you shouldn't be happy because other people have it better.
I have struggled with a lot in my life, probably more than the average person, and I always fought with myself about complaining and reaching out for help because I believed that if other people had it worse then what did I have to complain about? I just receded inside of myself; I almost died, I almost ended myself. Maybe if I had complained someone would've helped me when I really needed it. Sometimes people just need a kind word directed their way, sometimes they just need to hear that it's going to be okay, sometimes they post comments because they don't have anyone to talk to in real life and hearing that other people have gone through it can make you feel better.
Even people who post specifically for attention, what do you think is causing them to cry out for that kind of attention? Something is wrong in their daily life, their life isn't perfect, that would cause them to act out for attention like that. Pity them but don't hate them.

Most of these comments have one thing in common, this song makes one reflect on their lives, music has the power to recall memories, hopefully it helps us to put our lives in proper perspective.
