Over 20 years ago my dad got me some CDs from the flea market with this album among them. I put the CD on having no clue what was on it. The moment this track started I fell into the rabbit hole, into the new world. 💜 I still have the same feeling when I hear this masterpiece.
On 4 December 2004 I met a woman in her own home. At one point in the evening she went to the computer to play music. I approached her with all the courage I could muster at the time, she was 4 years older than me. I asked her for a song so that I could give her a kiss. She didn't look up from the computer. After a few seconds she pressed play on a song, Angel by Massive Atack started playing, she got up from her chair, and we kissed. We spent the whole weekend together. Less than three years after that day, we got married. As we walked into the hall with all the guests, this was our song. Fortunately, we are still together with two children, we have overcome many battles, there is probably not as much passion today as there was on that 4th of December. But for me, and I'm sure for her too, every time we listen to this song, we are transported and find the happiness of that special moment. Thanks a million Massive Attack for making this song that has meant so much in my life. If you happen to read this, don't worry, I'll thank my wife personally for playing it 🤣🤣🤣🤣😅
Don't get me wrong I love your story, But... this song is a...I just commited a very bad act kinda song. My guess is your wife was Black Widow who changed her mind. You are lucky she loves you! Enjoy what days you have left sir!
I will never not get chills when that snare hits just before the distorted guitar part comes crashing in at the end of the “love you” line. Such an amazing opener to such a legendary album!
The video is about running away from your fears, the longer you run away from them the greater they become until you reach to a point from where you can no longer run as if there is no land left for you to run on and there it is your greatest fears stood there right in front of you, and then you realize that these fears are just an illusion and that you confront them head on and then they are frighten of you at the moment you start chasing them.

And now that I'm older, more settled with a family, I still seek its wisdom. The highest comment discusses fear, which when re-watching the vieo, is now clear to me. Our fears change over time, though dependent on our preveiling situations, some are still common as time passes. I've always been angry/short tempered, and, it's gotten worse. So what I actually fear now, is myself. Not the fear of missing out, fear of failing, fear of a lack of knowledge, fear of the truth, fear of losing friends, etc, but my own actions.
I never heard of this guy, '99 kid and raised by 70's parents I know a lot of old music but I guess I'm still finding gems from this era in particular. I literally got chills listening to this.

This song takes me back, reminds me of what life was like as a kid. Everything, even the mundane and mediocre were interesting and exciting. Life was simple, world felt so small and yet so enormous at the same time, as if everything was a mystery to be discovered. Now as an adult, most things are dull and uninteresting, the feeling of adventure is gone and so is the enthusiasm provided by blissful ignorance of a child. As a kid life was like a page from a story book, now it feels like a statistic report. Sometimes I wonder is it just me, the fact that my life changed at some point or the fact that world has changed a lot? would I be as happy as I was in the past if I was a kid right now? don't know. Sorry for the long post, sometimes emotions pile up and you gotta let them out.
Honestly mate I don't think you would be as happy a kid today as back then. I was going through the same feelings as you a few months ago then I had an epiphany and now trying everything I know how to put the enjoyment back in life. Our life experience, thoughts and wisdom is what the world needs us for right now.
@@ec4020 You are right. Life has changed for multitude of reasons and not for the better I'd say. Things were simple back then, less was more. Now everything is overexposed to the point of barely having any value. Most things now feel so hollow.
Agreed and Desagreed. I suppose time and age make us feel exhausted, weary, and bored. And there's also the "internet era" that puts information, knowledge, food, merchandise and entertainment within an arm's reach making us believe that we have seen, listend and tried it all when in fact screen (bad) experiences are a big lie. I read somewhere that when we are kids, our innerself is like a shiny cristal ball that gets dust and dirt as we grow up... Some ideas to get rid of the dust: 1) Talk with kids (no to kids) and let them teach you to see (again) how wonderful the world is; 2) make a long walking tour with family or good friends to appreciate Nature; 3) set up on a sabbatical year (some months would be just as good) living in a very different country (3rd-world one?, not risky, Christian & Spanish-speaking perhaps); 4) spend some time in a religious monastery (no need to be religious just a respectful person yourself)... other ideas to help you to wipe the dust off your cristal ball?
Finally, after what seems a lifetime of listening to this song, I got to hear it live in Bristol in August at the Massive Attack concert... it was an EPIC moment, the rain was pouring down on us, the sound system was booming, and it was like a religious experience.
this track still lives deep within my heart, the rawness and emotion behind such a phenomenal track and also the ability to be able to move you and inspire you is such an effect. Massive Attack will forever be my favorite trip hop artist hands down!
+Bacon your comment is racist. if you try not to help someone or ignore something to not look racist you are racist. if your actions are dependent on physical appearance you are racist. its not just black/white/yellow/red thing, race is a loose and informal biological term meaning group of individuals of a species with similar physical characteristics. like a race of tall people or blond people or brown-eyed people. it has no meaning because everything can be a division line for grouping someone in a race.
sakatababa wow. I type my little sarcastic comment and you type a paragraph long attempt at some philosophical bullshit 😂😂😂😂. Keep up the good work, bubbs.
old is the new young - i am 60 in october and it was all punks mods and NWOBHM when i was a kid and massive attack make maybe the best music i have ever heard
this is one of my favorite songs ive ever heard. and the video makes me cry and fills me with strength. how many of our fears are just created by our mind? we really have nothing to fear.
24 years ago i was in basic - we were starting for the "long march" (30k with some 30kg ballast - in Switzerland, read: lots of hight-difference to master) during endurance-week. fellow soldier had a portable radio added to his luggage (bless this dude) and he was plaing mezzanine on "repeat after last track". waiting for the command to start, angel was running. let's just say - i heard this song several times that night and morning, and i learned to love it. gave good rythm to walk by. thanks massive attack, with your "musical support" i was able to end that march successfully! and during the next day "outside" i even gotten me the album myself. it's just too good.
Bought this album in 98 when it came out. Anytime I hear someone say 90s music sucks I give them a death stare. Massive attack was way a head of its time. Brilliant music.
+Fryderyk Jaron It's a cover. They used the music from an opening theme in a game called Vampire the masquerade: bloodlines. I love the game and the song
You are correct. I went down in the comment section and found out it was the opposite. Vtm:B Actually sampled this song for their game. Not the other way around.Either way I love both versions.
I have a little vault in my heart dedicated to "best songs ever", and this has been in it for many many years. I can't begin to describe how much I love this masterpiece.
The more you run away from fear, the more will come. Face your fear, the more you face it, the more will retreat and Angel will always at your side to help conquer fear.
This is the song and video that I need to show my daughter to prepare her for what she needs to know about life. I wish it had been made when I was her age.
@@lisahenry1560 Let's say everyone's got good thoughts and bad thoughts, experiences we make, that echo through our minds the rest of our lives. Everything we do is connected, if ever so slightly. Some experiences just make us who we are, others need to be put in their place lest they overwhelm us.
Such an intense, buildup, like all the worlds ends, are coming together, and this is the moment of action! In the midst of life and death, love, and war, peace and despair.... here we are....... My angel is here for this.
You are my angel Come from way above To bring me love (To bring me love) Her eyes She's on the dark side Neutralize Every man in sight Love you, love you, love you Love you, love you, love you Love you, love you, love you... You are my angel Come from way above Love you, love you, love you Love you, love you, love you Love you, love you, love you...
this song is immortal. I've listened to it as nauseum and yet I've never once seen the music video until now; it's always been beyond visuals for me. as cliché as it is to say, you don't just listen to this song, you experience it. however that may be
This song is like don't run away from your fears face them because most likely those fears aren't so scary after all or who you're afraid of isn't so scary as they've made you seriously perceive and feel. You've just exerted all that energy and tired yourself out causing yourself so much stress, fear, and anxiety, and for what exactly?. You'll try to fight it oh yes and try every way to avoid it but you can't until you stop being afraid of it or who you're afraid of, and when you do those fears will subside and dissolve away. All those guys are like a reflection of his fears and then when he stops running and realises his fears aren't as scary as they seemed he then starts chasing them away instead.
This is not music, this is not a music video, it does not come from a "band" or a "group". This is poetry, poetry that is lyrical, sound and visual in its perfection, it was not made it was created, nay molded from raw story telling genius by artists that serve to restore faith in the label. This is a universe of sensual bewilderment in a mere 5:25 epoch. Ensnared by this masterpiece, time stands still. The perfect meaning of story.
You are my angel Come from way above to bring me love Her eyes, she's on the dark side Neutralize every man in sight To love you, love you, love you You are my angel Come from way above To love you, love you, love you
It's like in a dream. If somebody is chasing you, try to stop, turn around and go right at them. And you'll become the one who are they running from. Works every time.
+davidtheguitarman Paranoia more directly. I think more generally, it describes how fears harrass us, making us stray from our purpose until we turn and face them. D.R.
The last few seconds of this video starting with when he stops to turn around, faces the crowd and the silent interaction between them is fascinating. Better acting in those few moments than most theatrical films 🎥
Yes. It's almost not acting, contrary to actors most often exaggerating certain aspects to pronounce their roles. (Which is not to say that I don't enjoy films as well.) I think the slow motion effect also plays a lot into this, in combination with the slow rhythms of the music. The forming of a feeling, or a thought, from mostly simple things. The crowd is like a part of the protagonist, they're all the little impressions and memories he gets from his own correlations with everything on his "journey" (moving, running, returning, repeating, rethinking, learning, changing, coherence and contradiction in the same move, echoes of thoughts and of the past/present, things we don't always realise that they had an influence on us or became part of us, as well as the influence we might have on other people, and at the same time we're all disconnected, singular, but some feel it more than others).
@@werewindwolf I'm very shocked of this videoclip. I think, that it's more deep. It's all about panic attacks and fears. Last scene shows when he look in eyes of fears and drive them away!
This style of trip hop has this innate ability to draw in goths/metalheads, club kids/ravers, hip hop fans, hippies/new agers, and more. These songs never feel dated and still make it into the playlists of 20 year olds, even now. Why do we not hear more music like this? If local clubs and bars had dark trip hop dance parties they would get such a huge turnout with such an interesting cross section of people from various subcultures, all connected by the music.
I wish other trip hop songs were more like this too. Not that they aren't as good, but this has a certain flavor to it that makes it so unique. I absolutely love it.
Morcheeba: howling, hooverphonics: strickly out of phase, garbage : struck of luck, Tricky: overcome(this one)... There is plenty of trip hop band but like everything good it's not having the favor of mainstream media.
Seventy year old woman here who still and always will love this track and this band. Maybe this for music to play at my funeral. Can you imaging how scandalized the funeral directors and guests would be! Yep. This will be the ONE on a long loop! What a magnificent send off!

The undulating, vibrating in the background and the lazy vocals do exactly that for me. Like heavy and cumbersome, like a sickness. Love is a sickness.
When I was younger, my mother and stepfather would go out for a car ride to smoke a ''bomb'', and we discovered this song on a DVD that we had in the car, we ''traveled'' a lot! Hail from Brazil!
... I will NEVER forget hearing this while watching "Snatch"...that part when he's narrating about "how they burned up his trailer-- with his mom in it"....and the slow-mo fire, and a slow push in on Brad Pitt's face illuminated by the glow of the fire.... he's all dirty & sooty from trying vainly to go into the inferno and pull his mom out.....his friends holding him back from what would be surely suicide... Good song for that part of the movie.
1:46 I love how it goes from “love you love you love you love you” to “love me love me love me love me” slowly without us realizing it

Facts
Hell yeah.. I’m randomly watching the movie Snatch on Netflix right now, and this beat started playing..so grimey

WOOOW. AWSOME CONCEPT. a man is scared so he runs from his fears. but then he realises he can confront them so when he does, his fears flea from him.

Chris Watson He's black. Leave him alone. That's racist.
+Bacon
your comment is racist. if you try not to help someone or ignore something to not look racist you are racist.
if your actions are dependent on physical appearance you are racist. its not just black/white/yellow/red thing, race is a loose and informal biological term meaning group of individuals of a species with similar physical characteristics. like a race of tall people or blond people or brown-eyed people. it has no meaning because everything can be a division line for grouping someone in a race.

You are correct. I went down in the comment section and found out it was the opposite. Vtm:B Actually sampled this song for their game. Not the other way around.Either way I love both versions.

20 years after, i still think this song is sent from the future. this sound is unique.
Moral of the song: You run away from problems, they will increase. If you run towards them to fix them, the problems will run away
That is what the video conveys, but what about the song?
@@PalashChanda-m2o fire
I'm running away from this comment but in my dreams. It feels like I'm sleep-typing a response that nobody will read. ✌️

It's like in a dream. If somebody is chasing you, try to stop, turn around and go right at them. And you'll become the one who are they running from. Works every time.
This video describes paranoia. Feeling chased. But if you are the one to chase the chaser, he runs away.
+davidtheguitarman Paranoia more directly. I think more generally, it describes how fears harrass us, making us stray from our purpose until we turn and face them. D.R.
+Hasfast thats right , its about fear ...

two pop culture things I love
The last few seconds of this video starting with when he stops to turn around, faces the crowd and the silent interaction between them is fascinating. Better acting in those few moments than most theatrical films 🎥
Yes. It's almost not acting, contrary to actors most often exaggerating certain aspects to pronounce their roles. (Which is not to say that I don't enjoy films as well.)
I think the slow motion effect also plays a lot into this, in combination with the slow rhythms of the music.
Yeah great Facial expressions and body language
@@werewindwolf I'm very shocked of this videoclip. I think, that it's more deep. It's all about panic attacks and fears. Last scene shows when he look in eyes of fears and drive them away!
Also, mushroom was probably tired as shit and winded from running through the whole video..lol
I heard it on Burn Notice s7e6, came here to hear the full song, really great sound, I'm in my 60s. Now I have to hear more by these guys.
Morcheeba: howling, hooverphonics: strickly out of phase, garbage : struck of luck, Tricky: overcome(this one)... There is plenty of trip hop band but like everything good it's not having the favor of mainstream media.
