Came back a day later to see if i had any crashes after watching this video. I DID NOT! Actually so shocked, not a single crash since doing these settings, thank you so much!
These solutions all worked for me, thank you so much. I was getting so frustrated with Vegas constantly crashing or getting stuck in "not responding limbo" when all I had done was just open the program itself. Now it actually runs and I can finish editing my videos. ; w ;
THANK YOU!!! I was losing the will to live having upgraded to Vegas 18 (always crashing). Now got it working - thanks to your vid. Didn't even need to disable the clip thumbnails (which I find useful). Cheers - you're a legend!
OMG! I fricking love you! You saved my nervs and my vegas runs much faster right now. The video preview is much smoother and vegas is no longer crashing! Thank you so much!
To say this tutorial was a life saver would be an understatement. Vegas user from the very beginning. Sonic Foundry beginning. Have never had a completely satisfactory experience, but always thought they were just one version or build away from perfection. Always frustrated with GPU acceleration. It was a lot faster, especially renders, if you could just keep it running long enough to finish without crashing. So most of the time I just left it off. Just updated to Vegas 18 couple weeks ago, then a new PC build. 12 core AMD, 64GB, nVidia RTX2060, 2TB m.2 SSDs. Lightening fast, GPU unbelievable. 6 layer multicam editing at Best/Full resolution previews. But.... after a few days and more elaborate projects it started crashing. I started disabling the GPU. Running Preview Half quality res. Turning off all thumbnails on timeline. It got so bad it would barely load. Under tremendous pressure to finish a job with a drop dead deadline I went looking for answers. Then I found this video. WTF? Why did someone on creative cow not tell me about the "Open CL/GL interop" 8 years ago? Seriously? As for the RAM setting, I had played with that but always assumed it was just for RAM preview, never guessed it improved other functions like thumbnail generation. From the experiments I made it sometimes increasing the RAM appeared to make matters even worse. Other advice I was getting always started with turning OFF GPU acceleration. So to wrap this up. I followed all your direction except timeline thumbnails. Sorry I need them, lost without them. But it doesn't matter, because this rig now can play at full resolution, while building thumbnails on the timeline. Something it had never done before. thanks! big thumbs up! subscribed. joined.
bro I was editing 1.5 hours of raw footage, and was getting fed up with the lag, and this video helped insanely much. It will probably improve my experience on shorter heavier edited videos aswell, as someone who uses vegas multiple times a week this is just so nice
I just bought the Vegas Pro 18 software and thank you so much for this video. These yours great videos will help a lot in making my channel videos. Keep up good work Josh.
Yes, thank you for this! I upgraded to 18 today, and like 17, it crashed all the time, which really impacts my workflow negatively. This fixed it though, thanks!
Yes! Thank you for showing AND explaining what we are doing by changing a setting. Others just show do this, this and that, and I have no idea what I've really changed.
I have tried out every solution for crash when previewing on external monitor, and nothing has worked until I randomly found this video and followed your steps - Thanks a lot! 💪
Thank you very much for fixing my problem. I went to another video and they said to set one of the SO4 options to false, but that doesn't exist on my copy of MS17. I had my render crash at 88% twice already. You deserve a medal for this!
A decade of problems with vegas, over 14 hours on this last project. You solved my problem. These are the most underrated vegas videos out there. Nothing else worked.
Lifesaver! Working on over 30 videos for a client and literally have been making a few edits, saving, crashing, reopening...saved me a lot of hassle. Sucks that Magix doesn't provide this info, but thank you for being a hero!
Wow. This video is a life saver. Using Movie Studio 17. Platinum and would constantly freeze on playbacks or even skimming through the video. Thank you so much!!
You should also add one more thing... Click on the help menu, and run the driver update utility. This will install the best recommended driver for VEGAS on your system, though it currently only works for Nvidia cards. For AMD cards, make sure you install the Enterprise driver, not the game drivers they give you by default. I just helped a user on the forums fix their issue this way, one click on the driver update utility, and their problems were gone.
That is a good method and could definitely go in this video. I have it in the More Cool New Things video but that one won't get as much attention as this one.
As someone who struggled with Vegas 14 crashing, I was a little disappointed when Vegas 18 carried on doing the same thing...but this has helped so much, thanks man!! *Edit - Forgot to mention how brilliant that thumbnail choice is
Thank you very much! You have help me to be able to open a file that I have been trying to open for 2 hours and the computers always freeze, after doing all the steps the files are load up without any problems. You save me all the work I put into this project. Thank you. 😃🤗 Subscribed! 😉
Same here Vegas pro 18, if i tick them all i get is OFF & AUTO (OFF), If i untick them it shows my NVIDIA card. I also only have one OpenCL/GL Interop, not the one for Intel.
Thanks for the video. As one of the few people who actually bought it, it just makes me mad how the make like $ 500 off of something that does not really work for anybody. I refuse to understand how the developers sleep at night 😄
This is great, I've seen so many different suggestions but this was the first I've seen of OpenCL or legacy decoding. I'm actually able to edit without spamming ctrl+S and crossing my fingers every time I pause or undo anything
I am sooooo glad I discovered you. Already a huge fan. I hope these particular changes also help Vegas 18 work with MVI files from my Canon DSLR, which have never ever been a problem before.
Thank you! This helped a ton. Now just have to remember where to find it when I want to use HEVC ;-). One interesting thing when I did this was that the hardware decoder to use (in File I/O) was grayed out and set to Intel, not my graphics card.
about to stomp on this program till I saw this video thanks, you are the man, never had a program crash so much, and believe me I am use to programs crashing, but this!!! 3 times in about 3 minutes, after a clean install, man thank you.
man ... you're great ... I watched tons of videos and tried to solve the problem of freezing in render on vegas 18 .... only your solution solved the problem. Please fix the title add freeze because people don't know it helps for that too. Thanks a lot my man!
So I've been experiencing lag with HEVC videos recorded with RADEON ReLIVE for eternity now. After watching so many things, all of these solutions used to fix the issues for me, including the So4 solution, but nothing would do the trick on Vegas 18. What I did was disable legacy HEVC decoding and the videos stopped lagging! Amen!

Thanks so much for this, the bits that were the same even fixed my Sony Vegas Movie Studio 18 that crashes frequently during playback. Been trying to fix this for a long time.
It's worth noting some users are reporting that after applying these fixes, they are getting errors with some projects not opening, VEGAS is asking for an internet connection even though one exists. I'm not sure which change triggered it, but one of them did, as when the user reversed these suggested changes, the bug went away.
Only recently purchase VP18 and was having all sorts of issues when testing Video FX with VP18 constantly freezing, going unresponsive. I applied the settings here and have not had any troubles since. I did not apply the Video setting as I edit a lot of 10 Bit videos. Cheers
In preferences -> File I/O -> Hardware decoder to use: I don´t have an option to chose a graphic card I have only OFF and Auto (Off) there even that in -> Video tab I clicked the GPU acelerator to use Nvidea . Thank you for help

And Pro 18 still will not render anything. Nothing at all. I should mention that Vegas Pro 14, which is on the same machine, works fine. Can you suggest any further steps. Thanks so much for all your help so far.
Wow that's crazy that they're not being rendered. Thanks for this. Not sure on step 3 though most people on other videos say disable gpu and 70% ram works for them . I'll try both either way the step 1 and 2 are very useful
I'm running Vegas Pro 18 as well. i7 7700k 4.5ghz with GTX 1080 GPU with 32GB ram. 18 was crashing on me every ten minutes. I follow your steps and 18 hasn't crashed in the past three hours. Thanks for the hint with the shift key when hitting options. I hit it too late when clicking on preferences. It drove me crazy to the point where I rendered 20 minute projects in 2 minute steps and joining the pieces together afterwards which is a major PITA. I fumbled around with CPU core blocking, turning GPU acceleration off(!) and everything else I could find on the web. Project is rendering again now and I shiver with anticipation...
A friend followed your suggestion to check the Enable legacy AVC decoding and Enable legacy HEVC decoding. Later he discovered that his VP18 could not read or edit 4k all-i video files from my Canon EOS R camera. He spent a week trying to figure out what was wrong before someone on the Vegas Pro Forum told him to uncheck those settings.
Sounds like those are 10 bit files. Means he needs to uncheck the AVC option and it will read them again. I explain that could possibly be a side effect.
the way you say "you could totally BREAK VEGAS" makes it so tempting
I just recently upgraded to Vegas Pro 18 and this helped a lot. I experienced my first crash and did these settings now its running perfectly!
Most in-depth tutorial on this subject I've watched. Concise and informative, exactly what I needed.

Since first checking in with you, I've done the following 7 things, trying to get Vegas Pro 18 to do any render at all:
1) Did latest Windows 10 update
2) Did Vegas Pro 18 factory reset
3) Did NVIDIA driver update
4) Enabled legacy AVC and HEVC decoding in File I/O
5) Set GPU acceleration processing to "NVIDIA" (also tried turning it OFF)
6) Dedicated a third of available Dynamic RAM
7) Set both Open CL/GL interops to "FALSE"
And --- after all that --- attempted to render several very short, basically unedited MP4s to the factory default project settings.
