Keith has a song called “ Don’t Close Your Eyes” that is a must listen. I hope you can listen to it. His voice is one of the most unforgettable in country. He passed way too young, and the industry was devastated.
Absolutely the best
One of his best “Don’t close your eyes”
Definitely listen to Don't Close Your Eyes
That one gets me every time😢
One of the best if not the best country voice of all time. The what ifs…… he became a legend in such a short time.
May 9, 1989. The day that a legend died. Despite only putting out 2 albums, he is still one of the most influential artists in country music. Everything he did was pure gold
He really was one of the best of all time...
@@twylawarner the voice 😢
I can't help but wonder how different country music would be had we not lost him so early in his career. But if wishes were all it took, then Patsy and Hank would've lived to be old country stars, and Keith would be one of the old guys now.
@@MatthewvMayosadly, probably not much different if at all. The powers that be would have gone the direction that Nashville has been going either way.
💯
Pronounced "WIT-lee". Great reaction. His twang is 100% part of who he was.
I was laughing every time he said it. 😂😂 but cant say much I do the same ctap and still laugh about it when I am corrected. Lol I suck at pronounciation though. Lol
The twang was real in that he was from Kentucky I believe. And your right the last name was Whitley.
@@matthewdrake4385 exactly. It was in his entire being.
Something I think is interesting, Keith, Sturgill Simpson, Chris Stapleton and Tyler Childers are all from within a 4 county area in KY. You should listen to Tyler Childers doing Hard Times
Jessie, I had no idea about that fact. Let’s not forget a few other artists from Kentucky as well. Ricky Skaggs, Loretta Lynn, The Judds and I think Crystal Gayle were all from there.
Keith was a Prodigy. Started touring as a musician too young for his youthful mind to handle what he was exposed to. Painfully shy, Keith turned to alcohol. Keith was The Voice of country music in only 3 albums! Beyond amazing musician, Singer and Songwriter. Gone too soon. “No Stranger to the Rain”….a song of his life. Love and miss you Keith.
It was a sad day in Country Music when he left this world. He was married to Lorrie Morgan (another country artist worth checking out). My favorite songs of Keith's are I Am No Stranger to the Rain and Miami, My Amy.
One of best most iconic voices ever. RIP Keith ❤
Alison did the song for a tribute album for Keith. It is very different than Keith's but still stunning. I could never say which i like best because I love them both. Be forewarned. Once you hear Alison's voice you may become addicted. It is the voice of an angel.
Also, pay attention for songs written by Paul Overstreet. He has many beautiful love songs.
Paul was a talent in his own right, and his son, Chord also has some pretty impressive chops.
Agreed
Allison's voice is like an angels.
Definitely giving a vote up for Alison Krauss and Paul Overstreet. Paul has been a songwriter for so long, and has such a gift for conveying emotion. Loved it when he started singing his own songs. Mark Nesler is another often overlooked singer/songwriter. He wrote Tim McGraw's "Just To See You Smile".
@@caretaker158 Paul has such an easy going voice. Very relaxing.
Both are good and deserve a listen. There’s a tragic story concerning Keith Whitley, he was married to country singer Lori Morgan he suffered from alcoholism finally dying from alcohol poisoning in May of 89. Upon hearing of his friend’s death country singer Vince Gill began writing some lyrics then put them away.A few years later after his brother died he came back to finish the song Go Rest High on that Mountain
That’s amazing I never new he started that song about Keith Whitley
Go rest high on a mountain is also one. of the best county songs of all time
Keith was a wonderful talent in the country music in the 80's. He was the husband of country singer Lori Morgan. But he had demons and died at age 34 of acute alcohol poisoning. His death left a void that was hard to fill. I loved his gorgeous baritone. At the time he died, I was an alcoholic myself and his death should have been a cautionary tale for me, but it wasn't. Vince Gill, who was Keith's friend, penned "Go Rest High On That Mountain" after his death. The first verse was about Keith and the second was about his brother when he died. The song is super emotional and has probably been played at as many funerals as "Amazing Grace." Glad you took the time to appreciate a talent that left us far too soon.
Keith Whitley was pure country and had an unmistakable voice. A country classic.
His song Don't Close Your Eyes is beautiful!! And his song Tell Lori I Love Her!! RIP Keith Whitley. BTW his name is pronounced like Whitney/Whitley!!❤
My first concert was Keith opening for The Judds. It’s impossible to imagine the direction country music would have gone had he not died so young. Despite only putting out 2 albums there are so many artists today that credit Keith as one of their influences.
Keith Is in my top 5 male country artist.great hits left this world way to soon..RIP!his blue grass roots go way back..
Yes he sang with my husband's cousin Ralph Stanley
Back in the early 90's Keith was one of my favorites especially for his heartfelt love songs. He was unapologetically country and knew how to touch your heart. I miss him.
Both are equally amazing and both versions should be celebrated.
My all time favorite country artist. His story is so tragic and he died way too young. Please do more Whitley.
"Don't Close Your Eyes" is one of the best songs all time. RIP Keith, we will always miss you. ❤
Several years back a country DJ mixed the two versions together so it sounds like a duet. IMO thats the best version.
21 years ago my beautiful bride walked down the aisle to this song. Such a beautiful song.
I was a little kid in McDonalds in Tyler Texas and a tour bus was outside. We went in and I was standing there at the counter beside Lorrie Morgan. It was 2 or 3 weeks after Keith died. You could tell she was having a tough time. I still said hi and she could tell that I knew who she was. This was early days of CMT and they were super famous for that era. Keith was one of my heroes when I was a kid.
Love this guy .....beautiful voice i was so crushed when he died back when
It doesn't matter who does a cover of one of his songs...its not possible to be better than him...his voice fits each of his songs perfectly. I hate hearing someone else singing one of his songs....weird pet peeve. Keith's hometown is half an hour from me. He's still remembered, revered and I don't think that will ever change. He is deeply missed. And yes, we have a ton of "twang" here! 😅
The late great Keith Whitley. The savior of 80s country.
Keith was such an amazing artist. He only recorded 3 studio albums while he was alive. One of which was released a few months after his death. Then 2 more albums were released with outtakes and recordings that were never released years after his death. Still with only 5 albums of original content, he made into the Country Music Hall of Fame. I believe there is only one artist to have made such an impact is such a short period of time. And that would be what many consider the greatest singer/songwriter ever Hank Williams. Who's single was in 1946 and he died January 1st, 1953.
You don’t have to chose between the 2 versions! It’s been remixed with both sing together and is incredible!
You can’t forget “Miami my Amy” look at his history dating way back ! It will blow your mind.
The lyricism in this is a big part of what brought me to country music. It’s still one of my favorites. Country music and his wife, Lorrie Morgan…another great in country, lost so much when he passed way too soon.
Keith was taken from us too soon. He was what classic country was. It’s Whit Lee. He was a legend!
It even became a monster pop hit for Irishman Ronan Keating who has had a great solo career after being with boyband Boyzone.
They used his version for the soundtrack for the movie Notting Hill
Funny, I forgot about the Boyzone version. discovered that fact a number of years after watching Ronan as a judge on X-Factor Australia. Since I loved Keith Whitley's song, I had to check out Boyzone's version. While Ronan sang the song beautifully and is certainly easy on the eyes especially to young girls/women back then, I preferred Keith Whitley's version simply because the song was ''believable''. I have seen more recent videos of Ronan performing the song that are really good though because he's a man singing this song and not a boy. Believable. That may be weird to some people, just my opinion. :)
His motorcycle is now on display at the Country Music Hall of Fame. Lorrie donated it years ago. I have seen it when I visited Nashville.
I was young when he passed but still loved his music then and now! Definitely check out the Alison Krause version and also the mix made with them both. Don't Close Your Eyes, Til a Tear Becomes a Rose (with Lorrie Morgan), No Stranger to the Rain, and Brotherly Love (with Earl Thomas Conley). Many others to choose from. Thanks for the reaction!
The mix of the two is just incredible. Whoever put that together did an amazing job
I was about 7 years old when he passed. He was my first crush and I was devastated. I could not be consoled
Keith's version is beautiful and a timeless classic, HOWEVER... Allison Kraus's cover takes it to a whole other level!! It just hits you different. Her voice is beautifully haunting!!🥰 Definitely check it out. Great reaction! Peace and light...💞
Ever heard the version where someone mashed them as a duet that never happened? 👍🏻
The two versions are equal, but yet differebecause of the voices...
They're nowhere near equal! Keith's version is the penultimate version, the epitome of a great song. If Allison had done it first, it would have been "meh..." at best, dislike it at worst, whereas Keith's version, I loved from the very first time I heard it.
@@josiahrobinson6135 🙄 Whatever dude. Music, art and most things in life are subjective. You are entitled to feel how you feel and so am I. One question though... who is "they're"??? I only mentioned Allison's TRIBUTE to Keith cover.🙅♀
Seems to me you are a troll looking to spread negativity. I will have absolutely no part in that.
Peace and light...💞
LOL! Obviously, the "they're" refers to the two versions of the song. 😂😂😂
"You're free to feel however you want", but if you have a different opinion than me, you're " a troll looking to spread negativity. " LMAO! The 1⃣9⃣9⃣🐍 CobraCrew roasts each other better than that, but thanks for playing. Without Keith's version, there's never have been an Allison version. No puns intended, but for the record, I do like Allison's version. I just think that Keith's version is way, way, way better. You have yourself an EPIC night and an EPIC Independence Day!🤘🤘🤘
Keith had one of pure country voices ever. We had this song sang at our wedding. Keith had a demon called alcohol. He couldn't kick the habit and it killed him. If he had lived he would have dominated the charts. I saw him in Chattanooga Tn and he was kind to his fans and his concert was amazing. Such a sadness in his voice. RIP KEITH. You are loved and missed by your fans.
Ahhh....Keith Whitley (pronounced "wit" lee). I'm No Stranger To The Rain and Don't Close Your Eyes are equally great. His voice was unique and classic. He was gone way too soon.
Keith was in my mind vastly underated. He just had that classic, deep country voice with so much feeling. Great reaction!
Country is truly America's music. You don't find that anywhere else! BTW, it's Keith (Wit lee)! Happy to see younger people with open minds! Look at the world of music you have opened up for yourself!
You should do Alison's version too. Her voice is so pure. My and my husband danced to it at our wedding.
There is a version of this song, with Keith and Alison dubbed together into a duet.... Very well done video, even if it was not a collaboration of the two artists together, live... I have no idea if they ever crossed paths before Keith passed away, but the duet video proved that the two of them were vocal magic together... Best of both worlds...
I'm just glad you're giving it a chance.....lots of good music out there!! I can't believe you are Spanish?? You're English is better than mine, lol!! Sound like you were raised in Minnesota!!! All good though.....always explore new songs and different music genres!!
Keith got started in bluegrass singing for Ralph Stanley. Ralph Stanley and the Clinch Mountain Boy's were running late for a show. When they arrived to do the show Keith and Ricky Skaggs were on stage playing. Ralph gave them a job in his band.
I agree with the comments below regarding Keith! Listen to Don't Close Your Eyes and I'm No Stranger to The Rain. The second song is referenced in Vince Gill's Go Rest High on That Mountain. In it, he is referring to Keith, "You weren't afraid to face the devil. You were no stranger to the rain" R.I.P. Keith. We will see you on the other side!
I'm glad you decided to do this version first but I'd still recommend Alison Krauss's version. There's even a duet version with Whitley and Krauss.
I'm NO Stranger To The Rain...is one of his BEST songs!❤
He was one of the best singers in country music he had awesome voice loved his songs
The motorcycle is Keiths Harley Davidson which i think is still on display in his exhibit at the country music hall of fame.
kieth was my grands 2 cousin, met him once when i was little, i remember him being just a kind soul
One of the greatest voices to ever live. It's a shame he couldn't handle his demons gone entirely too soon. You have found a rabbit hole you should explore
I am glad you have the light about country music like your reactions
Country music is very heart touching music 🎶
Keith Whitley is a country music legend, Alison did this song as a tribute, Rip Keith.
Finally found someone watching Keith Whitley ❤️
A true legend, I have always loved and enjoyed his music. Gone too soon, and us southern girls love the ability to move us and speak to our hearts!
I miss country music from the 60s to the 80s. Especially the 80s there were so many good artists and bands. The 90s I noticed it going down the drain and it sucks today. Keith Whitley was very talented. Too bad he passed away in his 30s.
I get the debate as to which version to hear. Both are beautiful and pull on the heartstrings, but they are just enough different that they hit differently.
It just like which version of “I will always love you” to listen to. Very different (Whitney vs Dolly) but both are powerful in their own way.
Both versions are awesome, but this one i totally get the feels. It draws u in
It is always a pleasure listening to your reactions, they all seem to be fantastic! All my love to your loving wife 💖💖
OMG!! I love this song!!! He is amazing!!!! He died too soon! Dancing with your significant other and he sings it to you; I’m in love all over again!!!!
R.I.P. To a legend that was taken away too soon.
People say they don't like Country music Because they only hear the twang. But if you listen long enough to get past that, You will hear the beautiful music and lyrics. Sure there's some silly songs but country love songs are the best ever.
Pure country voice that kicked off the newer country feel of the 90s, even though he never made it, he influenced a ton of that era
Keith put out this record way before Allison and both versions are great. That Kentucky twang comes naturally as he was born in Ashland, Kentucky. He was a Kentucky bluegrass singer originally singing with the Great Bill Monro along with Marty Stuart.
He is from Sandyhook and he sang with Ralph Stanley. Not Bill Monroe.
And it was Ricky Skaggs
It doesn’t matter the music. Country, jazz, blues, hip hop. It’s all about people like you seem to be my friend. A genuine down to earth kind of guy! Luv u. Keep doing what you’re doing!!!
Love him he was gone way to soon! 😢😢😢
Keith was married to Lorrie Morgan, a beautiful singer in her own right. After he died, she recorded “a picture of me without you” sooooo gorgeous!!!
FYI the pronunciation is Witt-ly. Talented guy who made quite a few hits before he passed at this age. He was married to Lorrie Morgan at the time. An awesome, beautiful country singer. My fav by her is 'Something is red'.
I'm so happy that you finally did Keith Whitley!
Paul & Don are 2 of the BEST writers in Nashville - Keith died way too soon - yet he is still love these days!!!
There is version where both Keith Whitley and Alison Kraus sing it together. Both are mashed together since Keith had already passed away. That is the version I like best
Paul Overstreet is a rabbithole to go down, all by himself. Hugely successful singer/ Song writer. Many, many hits written for others as well as for himself.
Sebs, check out his wife singing. Her name is Lori Morgan and everything she did was great also. She also wrote a book about her marriage to Keith..... heartbreaking story. I would love to see you and Aly reaction to her song Something in red. Love you guys and your reactions.
if you want to hear Keith singing about himself and his struggle with alcohol listen to his song I never go Around Mirrors
There is a video with Keith and Allison singing this together. Someone did a fantastic job of putting it together.
Keith was such a fantastic singer and songwriter, miss him.
Don't close your eyes, Ten feet Away, Miami, My Amy, No Stranger to The Rain, All of his songs are amazing ❤
Must listen to I'm No Stranger To The Rain. Vince Gill wrote and sang Go Rest High on That Mountain when Keith passed away
So smooth!!❤❤
Keith Whitley, Conway Twitty, and Charley Pride were my Pops 3 favorite country artists. I heard alot of older country growing up and still love all of it to this day!
Both are great versions are great. ❤
Though it was never officially released there is a duet version of allison Krauss and Keith whitley singing this song as a duet on RUclips i had downloaded it via Napster or limewire years ago
You did the right version, in my opinion. Not taking anything away from Allison, it’s just not the original. Keith is one of my all time favorite artists. ALL time! Ten Feet Away is my favorite of his. Followed by Tell Lorrie I Love Her, for obvious reasons. 😂 I don’t think he’d disappoint you, no matter the song you listen to. His voice is music on its own! Anything sung in that voice is pure heaven!
Sadly, this talented man died at age 34. So sad. Alisons version is also beautiful. Like all the versions of Sound of silence, hers is beautiful & the same, yet different.
New to your channel here but from what I've seen so far...you seem like a good man.
Vince Gill's version of "Go Rest High on that Mountain" was for Keith - check out that video.
That Twag is pure Eastern KY! Love it. Whitley is pronounced with a short I, like bit or fit.
Allison sings like an angel but no one touches Keith Whitley. His voice is like home. Please do Don't Close Your Eyes. Beautiful. His voice is like Randy Travis to me. Both voices r like butter.
Way back when I was in-between marriages, I made more than 1 woman melt by playing this song for them.
I cry every time I hear this!!!
I love both versions of this song, I guess it just comes down to whether you want to be the one saying it or the one hearing it.
So true
Love this song and absolutely prefer it to the Krauss version. We had the Whitley song play during our wedding during the unity sand.
Morgan Wallen has a song on his new album called "Keith Whitley", and it references several of Keith Whitley's songs in the lyrics. Keith Whitley fans can find the songs in those lyrics.
Keith was great. I'm no stranger to the rain. R.I.P
Real country music can't beat the emotion , the musicianship, the stories
Much love to you too
Hit but with a W in front -- whit (like smarts) whit-lee. :) No other voice like Keith's! A man on the edge of Mega-Superstardom in Country music, making the jump over from Bluegrass. May 9th, 1989 - Keith overdosed on alcohol and left this earthly life. I do love Allison Krauss, who also has a huge Bluegrass background, and sure do appreciate her version but Keith done it 1st and the version I learned. Keith's range is ridiculous also. Be Safe
Allison Kraus is amazing!!!
Thanks Sebs for sharing your first reaction to Keith Whitley's When You Say Nothing at All, the best version, in my opinion. Allison Krause is great, so I don't want to take anything away from her.
Love his song " homecoming 63 "
you never hated country. you had just never listened to it. a song about a guy mowing his lawn and thinking about his life can bring you to tears. it is the heart and soul of the country.
One of the best love songs ever sang. That's the way love goes.
