I have spent an embarrassing amount of money on crochet hooks. I have used the least expensive hooks, vintage hooks from thrift stores, purchased custom hooks and the fancy Furls hooks, and Clover Amour. Of all the crochet hooks I own, Clover Amour is my very absolute favorite. The steel hooks have pastel handles; the aluminum hooks have basic rainbow colors for their handles; and the plastic hooks have bright and neon color handles. I own all the Clover Amour sets, and I love them so much. I do use my other hooks, occasionally. But then I go back to my Clover Amour hooks and everything is suddenly right with the world. They’re absolutely perfectly designed.
I love the Pryms because I have long fingers. Looking at my hands while chrocheting today, I also realised that I hold the grip in the palm of my hand but have my index finger basically next to the tip to guide the yarn. I am forever fascinated by the endless variations of holding the hook and the thread!😁
I think it all depends on how you hold your hook. As a pencil gripper with small hands, I don't care for many hooks that are promoted on social media and I really dislike plastic hooks. I'm glad there are so many choices available for everyone no matter your skill, grip style and financial status.
As a rule, I'm not a lover of plastic hooks either, but the Clovers are really good. I think the reason for them being plastic is because they would be a little heavy if they were metal.
@@JayCee_64 ... I have, and while they glide well like the Amour, I prefer the grip of the Amour because I have arthritis. The grip is much better on the Amour than the Soft Touch for me. I can use both though.
I own both of these hooks. For me, the Prym was a game changer. I have large hands and these work best for me. My hand is so relaxed when using the Prym.
Thanks for the review! I've been thinking about trying the clover amour so it will stay on my list. I own Prym hooks and love them. The pointy tip really makes a difference when working on baskets or this evening working the brim of a cotton baseball cap with very tight stitches. I was using my Susan Bates aluminum and about to bust a blister in my palm. Switched to Prym and WOW, easily slides into those tight stitches and no more pain with the soft grip. Yay!
I've tried many hooks and I just got the Prym and I like it. I have bigger hands and I've switched up my grip from knife to pencil and it seems likey tension is more consistent. Who knew! There are so many ways to hold your hook and hold your yarn, so whatever works. Thank you for doing this comparison.
Thanks. I do beadwork and tulip needles are the best and I have their smaller crochet hook set which is very nice for jewelry making but was undecided on what larger set to get for yarn work. I strongly favor the Tulip brand.
Jada, I kept avoiding buying the big clover or more hooks, thinking I would not like them. Well, I took the plunge, and I absolutely love them. They are light and comfortable on my hand and they glide through the yarn. And make me happy.
I just stumbled upon this video and happy I did. I just purchased a new hook promoted by a channel quite expensive and I think I now know what’s going on. First I hold my hook as you do. I crochet very tight just my preference. The neck is longer I have had to take a break past few days because my wrist is hurting. I have been crocheting since I was 11 and have never had this issue. Thank you for this video.
Also my experience with. Good for me with multiple strands, thick yarns, multiple, loops. But also like the Clovers. My favorites in smaller sizes 4.4 to 6.5 are the tulips
Thank you, Jayda and Mr InStitches ☺❣ Never had Clovers but I do have a couple of Pryms and I have liked to crochet with them, even the big projects 😊.
I agree 100%. I wish I would have watched this before I bought a couple Pryms. I also found the pryms to be a bit scratchy with the yarn I was using. Clover Amour is my winner too.
I prefer the Clover amour, as well. I do have a Prym and when you talked about using your thumb to control the yarn, I realize I use my index finger to do that. Interesting how differently we all crochet, isn't it. 😺
I tore a tendon in my index finger 1 1/2 years ago. I was making 4 Christmas Afghans & had just started on the 4th Afghan when this happened. I 'was' a pencil grip crocheter & because I had a splint on my finger, I had to switch to an Ergonomic Hook. I found the Prym Hooks at Michael’s which I actually tested in the store before buying it because I had to switch to a knife grip due to the splint. I was able to finish the Afghan & bought 2 sets off of Amazon. I personally love the long neck with the deep & pointy hook head. They do squeak a little & I think you didn't experience the sqeaking because you used a large hook with finer yarn. I now use the knife grip to crochet & these are my go to hooks. I've never tried the Clover Amour Hooks but you've peak my curiosity now.
I tried the Prym hooks earlier this year and returned them because they made my hands hurt. I am like you, I use my thumb on where the yarn lays in order to control tension. Have a great weekend!
Thanks for the evaluation. I switch between types of hooks depending on the stickyness of the yarn and the project. As I have longer fingers the Pym are fine for me but I totally get that they would be too long for petite hands. I am going to pay more attention on how I move my hands while crocheting based on your comments.
Thank you, Jayda, great video. I’ve tried many brands including all types of the Clovers, Tulip Etimo, Furls, Prym, etc, as well as non ergonomics. Any of the Clovers are still my faves with the Amour winning first place. I don’t use the Prym a whole lot. I find the neck too long for comfort and the hook too long, causing me to have to pull or twist to release the yarn. Just an FYI -An excellent ergonomic hook is the Hobby Lobby brand with the swirly color soft handle. The handle sometimes feels slightly sticky but I find that it helps when working with #5 or #6 heavy weight yarn. It helps give some extra hold to pull yarn through on complex stitches. Love you, Jayda, you’re one of the best teachers out there! I learned to crochet by RUclips and if I wanted to really understand and see a stitch or project, I have to come to Jayda. ❤️🥰
This is such an interesting comment to me. It just proves and supports the idea that hooks are very personal. I can't use the Clover Amour ones mentioned here because of the short neck. You stated the neck was too long on the Prym. I'm thinking I may need to try them now. I wasn't as impressed with Furls as everyone seemed to be on one of my groups. I bought a couple, but am not able to justify the price to buy more. Thanks for posting. I love to read other's opinions.
@@elainewheeler3572 Hi, I was just notified of your response. True, these comments are very helpful and hooks are very personal. I also didn’t like Furls because of the fat handle and weight - the balance seemed off to me. I gave mine away. You may like the Prym. They have enough grip and are smooth. Good luck!
I have one Prym, size H. I find I place my thumb on the white part and don't have a problem reaching the stitches. I like it but have never tried a Clover. It's very interesting what different people like.
The prym you are using is one of my all time favorites, but I realized through watching your videos why lol. I choke up on the hook, about an inch of the bottom hangs out of my hand, I control my loops with my thumb too. BUT the reason I love it is because it doesn't kill my hands (RA and CT), your video made me realize it's because I roll the hook with my ring and pinky fingers rather than my thumb, which is probably what helps so much with the pain, in additionto the lighter weight than my original metal hooks! I was watching trying to decide if I wanted to invest in the amours, still not sure lol. But the drag on prym drives me a little nuts, Susan bates soft ergos are another favorite but too sharp and split anything that's not a single strand, at least for me. Maybe I'll just bite the bullet finally lol.
Agreed. My hands are small and I found the Amour is much better for me. I love the thumb grip so much I bought every size available and donated my metal ones. I'm hoping they'll make some of the smaller hooks in the same material soon. I would replace every hook I have and would be happy to rebuy them even if they broke due to thinness. I love how the yarn glides on the hook. It's so smooth my crocheting feels faster than with metal hooks. The Prym feels awkward in my hand. Hope it helps. 🐑
I like that the Pyrm is longer. I like the clover amores just wish that they were longer overall. I have both and I use both, but I am a pencil grip. Thanks for sharing. Hope you’re having a great day.❤
Love my Clover Amour. I have two sets and all of the larger plastic ones as well. I don’t really consider the smaller sizes a true inline hook like the Susan Bates but they work well for me. I always try different hooks with different yarns and stitches and then decide which works best for me. They can vary a lot. Thanks for a great review Jayda.😊
I like Prym, so far every product I've used, including the knitting needles. For my style of working, there is minimal adjustment. But I think ergo hooks are like comfortable shoes, one person's ideal is horrible for someone else. Glad a yarn shop had a variety to try, Addi are great but take 10 to 20 stitches to adjust. Clover tends to not work very well for me.
Hi Jayda! I have 18 of the Clover Amour hooks and absolutely love them! I use a pencil grip. I have seen the Prym hooks, but am really not interested in trying any other hooks. I do appreciate your comparison video, though.
I understand your concern, but as a person with rather large hands, I like the longer neck, and the larger hook generally. I loved the Clover hooks at first, but then I got a Prym and discovered that it felt better for me. I found that the tension in my right arm and shoulder, that I had always felt with the smaller hooks was much lessened. I have both, since there are certain sized hooks in each set that you can’t get, and I just get the other brand where that size is missing.
Looking at the Prym, it does look as if the fat bit might actually be intended to nestle into the palm of the hand. That would make the neck a lot less long than the way Jayda is holding it. 🤔
I also have knife grip and prefer tapered hooks, specifically the Clover tan metal hooks. I don't like the Prim hooks at all, they feel too long, grippy/squeaky. Hooks are such a personal thing, it's amazing how we each have very specific preferences for our hooks 😁
I have a cheap set of hooks from china, almost the same style as the Amour. I prefer the short tip and thumb rest, and I have big hands. Enjoy your videos, Thanks Jayda. Dan
I switched to a hook with a longer neck and I am much happier. I was constantly having issues with multiple stitches not fitting on the neck because it was too short. That said, I don't grip the hook at all (I have a modified way of holding the hook with my stomach), so it doesn't matter too much where the grip is. It did take some getting used to. Hooks are different for everyone. I am glad you clovers are still reigning supreme. -Masha
I have bigger hands and often use the prym..it can be a little squeaky on acrylic yarns. I also love my clover..sometimes I interchange them on a project, I like them both. I enjoyed your tutorial. Thank you Jayda.😊
I like the Prym hooks ok but I am not used to them either and I really prefer the metal hooks. I did get a set of clover amours and I like them. but I wish they were a little longer. I bought a couple of the Tulip hooks and I actually like them the best of the few expensive hooks that I have. I like the length of the Prym but I just always go back to metal hooks. Enjoyed the review.
Hi. I have small hands, use the pencil grip and my favorite hooks are the Clover Soft Touch hooks. I have several Prym hooks and haven't yet gotten used to the long neck, but plan to try with Tunisian and other yarns (thicker). I had the same thoughts as you...bigger hands, longer fingers, male crocheters, etc., would probably love them. I'm not giving up on the Pryms yet. Thanks for your review.
I have just one Prym hook. It was the only one I could find that was 3.0 mm, their size C. (Clover size C is 2.75 mm). I also found the length of the neck to be awkward for me. Because it is plastic, and relatively small compared to the 4.0 - 5.0 metal Amores I usually use, I felt like it might be fragile with my tight tension. I didn't break, however, and I like the design and the feel of the handle. If I could get used to the long neck, I think I'd like it OK.
If I try Tunisian again the Prym looks like it will be perfect. I didn't like the feel of the full tunisian hooks when I tried it before. Even kinda makes me *want* to give it another try. Otherwise, I love the Amours (though a *little* more length but not that much on the working end would be welcome, especially on the normal size hooks) and will probably stick with them.
I have bought them all. I have really large hands. I love the clover hooks for small projects, but they end up rubbing a spot in the palm of my hand raw on large projects. I have all the sizes in the Pryms, and they work great because they stick out just past the palm of my hand. The positive on the Pryms is also the negative. The raised part that has the size can also rub your skin raw. My Pryms are also in mm, but I have had them for a few years. A really excellent substitute is the Hobby Lobby brand. They look and feel the same but have no raised size and are less expensive. The only drawback is that I cannot see the size. LOL who am I kidding I can't see the size on any of them I would love to see something on Furls. I spent a lot of money on them and must have been doing something wrong because I couldn't finish a project with them. I'm constantly dropping stitches, but they are just so pretty.
It's funny, I prefer the longer necks so the Prym is the style I prefer. I've used the similarly shaped ones from Hobby Lobby. I've tried one kind of similar to the clover one but not the same. I did not like the shorter neck- my yarn kept bumping into where the grip started. Im weird lol.
I am a pencil grip and I love my Clover hooks. I like the thumb rest too. I think the Prym hooks are too long for me. They are great hooks for some people though. Thank you for sharing your review. 🧶💜🙏🏻
Not at all surprised with your opinions on these hooks. I completely agree about the hooks and hand size. I hold my yarn with my index finger as opposed to you using your thumb. And it definitely takes getting used to, having that extra stretch to reach. I had to build new muscle memory to adapt
I didn't realize my thumb moved around like that 😂 Here I thought I understood how I crocheted and it took getting a new hook to realize just how much work my poor thumb does!
I use Armour and Clover hooks and purchased the Prym set because people were saying how great it is. I did not like it because I also found it to be to far away from my work, no thumb rest and I couldn't get used to it. So now, it sits in my collection un-used.
It’s all about the hook shape for me. I only use the sharp edged in-line hooks unless I have no other choice. I have quite a few Prym hooks and really like them. I don’t turn my hook the same as you do, plus I’m a pencil gripper. To each our own definitely!☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️
Thank you for your review and comments. I changed hooks to what I now use after seeing a review on hooks and I have invested into the whole line of Amour hooks by Clover. I really like them and just got a couple of ergonomic Boye Large ( K L ) hooks and am very disappointed. I have been looking at the Dots hooks but I think I'd rather spend the same money on yarn and build up my inventory. Thank you again for the review.
I have both. I’m a pencil grip, I guess you’d say lol I call it chopstick bc it starts off pencil grip but evolves into what holding a chopstick looks like lol. I’m a die hard clover fan and I have all the hooks including the BIG ones. I have a couple of prym hood and they’re not bad but the longer throat/hook part is a little too long. But not uncomfortable
I have not used any of my many other hooks ever since I got the Clover Amours. I bought one to try, then quickly went to Amazon to buy them all. FYI- I am 72, been crocheting since I was 10, and have arthritis. I doubt I’ll be buying any more new hooks unless I lose one, and if I did it would definitely be another Amour.
I find these hook reviews fascinating. Havent gone to the trouble of a meta analysis, but it would be interesting to check whether if you like the Clovers you wont like the Pryms. For me, i love my Pryms - i do bobble and front/back post stitches and appreciate the length. I like the glide and how the hook really grabs, altho i have small hands i appreciate how the end of the hook extends past the back of my hand, and the white color because i work with dark yarns.
Funny, but it really depends on the project and my mood when I start the project as to which hook I use. I love my Prym hooks, but some projects just call for a metal hook, and others really beg for a bamboo hook. I can't even say that I always use tapered or inline, because it depends on what the yarn tells me when I start working with it.
I am a knife grip, but I control the loops with my index finger and leave my thumb on the thumb deck. I wonder if that would make Prym more comfortable for me. Thanks for the thoughtful review, Jayda!
Hmmm. I alternate between grips, which I find helpful for aches/fatigue. However, I have found that where i hold the hook is the most important. I hold it close to the hook head and so sadly decided a while ago the Pryms were not for me. The other thing I cannot stand is stamped print under my thumb. Drives me nuts and is very uncomfortable.
For me to big , to long , tooo Expensive, I'm happy with the set i have , no wonder people have pain in arms with Prim ,,, no thanks , i agree with you Jayda !!
I have both and, while I prefer my Clover hooks for pretty much the same reasons you do, one thing I do like about the Prym hooks is that having my hand further away from my work (I don't use my thumb on the yarn the way you do) makes my tension a bit looser than normal. I tend to crochet tight, so the Prym hooks are good for when I want the work to be a bit looser. Also, my Pryms are sized by mm, not letters. I don't know why they're different from yours in that regard. I'm in the US, so it doesn't make much sense.
I had a set of the smaller Prym hooks and I'm afraid I can't recommend them 😕 the handles have a silicone covering that goes sticky over time, even with regular cleaning. I'm slowly replacing with the Clover hooks, I like to have the thumb grip
I have a knife grip and I use Knitter's Pride "Waves" hooks (aluminum with ergonomic grip) and I also have a set of Knitter's Pride "Zing" hooks (aluminum). I've never tried Clover hooks, but I've heard really good things about them. I might buy one or two and give them a whirl. I'm curious, Jayda: Does Mama InStitches still use the Tulip hooks?
I bought Prym ergonomic 6mm and it has a lot of drag. I love the shape of it but I have to put in more effort with my hands and it slows me down. I have arthritis and the metal ones are noticeably easier to work for me. They slide better and faster in the yarn. If only it came in aluminum. I've also noticed it has very strong static elec.
Prym is my favorite hook. Unfortunately when my dog was a puppy, she liked them too. I’ve had to replace my H and J a few times. Downside, the set doesn’t come with an I 5.5 hook. Don’t know why.
Interesting that I'm in Australia and my 6mm Prym ergonomic hook has 6mm embossed in the handle so they must make them different for the different countries? I like them but I have larger hands and hold pencil grip so that might make a difference as well. I also find that there are some yarns that work better than others on my Prym hooks so do tend to reach for the clovers before the Pryms
I've tried other hooks byt go back to the metal hooks, the plastic seems to make my stitches too loose and makes my crochet looser the more rows i work so blankets are not straight and top and bottom do not match up - the bottom seems bigger the handles do not bother my hands and most times i for it and go back to the aluminum hooks like the Susan Bates even on the bigger hooks
I have one Prym and a bunch of Clover hooks. The Prym I have is a size G. I don't notice any issues going from a Prym to a Clover. I also have some Tulip ergonomic hooks that I like. I like any of these three better than the cheap Amazon hooks that I got in a set. I like the ergonomic grip better than the metal hooks. I purchased a fancy Ophire jewel hook and I really don't like it.
Wow. Now I understand why my wrist hurts after using the Pyrm hook. I knew the long shaft was the reason, but trying to stretch & turn does it. Can't use with my small hands.
I just bought a Prym 3.5mm at Michael's 2 weeks ago. Total impulse purchase. I've been using Addi Colors hooks now for close to 10 years. I only use a different brand if I need something larger than a 6mm which is really rare. I HATED the Prym hook. As you noted only the letter size is on the hook not the actual measurement. It was not comfortable in my hand. I crochet knife-hold not pencil-hold. But the worst was the plastic shaft. I tried it with Plymouth Encore which is 70% acrylic/30% wool. The yarn stuck to the hook but also the hook was incredible rough. It felt like I was pulling the yarn over sandpaper. I won't even give it away it was that bad.
I've tried a few different ergonomic crochet hooks and I have never found one better that the Amoré hooks. Not even the popular Tulip hooks, I don't like them. So, I just quit looking and use the Amoré.
I have spent an embarrassing amount of money on crochet hooks. I have used the least expensive hooks, vintage hooks from thrift stores, purchased custom hooks and the fancy Furls hooks, and Clover Amour.

But the drag on prym drives me a little nuts, Susan bates soft ergos are another favorite but too sharp and split anything that's not a single strand, at least for me. Maybe I'll just bite the bullet finally lol.
I have both and love my clover hooks and for the same reasons you gave
Hope you’re having a great day.❤
I was looking at the clover 8mm hook . Thanks !
I work very close to the yarn as you do and LOVE the amour. I'm still keeping an eye on the bigger amour hooks definitely want to try those too😀😀
Love my Clover Amour.
I have tried the clover and I do like them a lot but don’t have many. I have been so interested in the prym.
I have a cheap set of hooks from china, almost the same style as the Amour. I prefer the short tip and thumb rest, and I have big hands. Enjoy your videos, Thanks Jayda. Dan
I like them both depending on what yarn I’m using and what I’m making v
I still prefer all things Clover Amour. The Prym hook is nice, but it would take a learning curve for me. Thanks for your review! 💜
I love prym and clover my favorites! Im a knife holder
I use both hooks. I have large hands and I like using Prymm when using 2 stands of worsted weight yarn. The longer neck helps.
I am a pencil grip, and the Clover hooks are my favorite!
Thank you this helps me decide I definitely will stay with my clover hooks and not waste money on prom it will not work for me
Nothing has unseated my Clovers so far, but it's certainly fun to try new hooks!
LOL who am I kidding I can't see the size on any of them
I would love to see something on Furls. I spent a lot of money on them and must have been doing something wrong because I couldn't finish a project with them. I'm constantly dropping stitches, but they are just so pretty.
I really love both! Unfortunately have broken *2* Prym while doing Amigurumi, so use my metal shaft hooks for that lol.
❤❤❤I love my Prym hooks...😊😊😊
It's funny, I prefer the longer necks so the Prym is the style I prefer. I've used the similarly shaped ones from Hobby Lobby. I've tried one kind of similar to the clover one but not the same. I did not like the shorter neck- my yarn kept bumping into where the grip started. Im weird lol.
Thx Jayda!! 😉
Thank you for watching Mary 😊
@@JaydaInStitches I had the same exact realization when i started using longer hooks. Its so funny.
Great comparison, thank you!
Tried Clovers about 6 months ago. Only hooks I use now. Used Joann's 50 percent off coupons which helped with the price. ❤
I like both types. It just depends on the project. Also, I have rather large hands for a woman. (thanks, Pop) The Prym hooks just seem to work for me.
Fiber can definitely change how my hooks feel in my hand too!
I am a knife grip, but I control the loops with my index finger and leave my thumb on the thumb deck. I wonder if that would make Prym more comfortable for me. Thanks for the thoughtful review, Jayda!
the Prym is more for pencil holders and for those with long fingers from experience, that is why the neck is much longer than the clover.
I'm in the US, so it doesn't make much sense.
well that's odd, isn't it! I'd have preferred the MM vs the letter 😊
Every day. They're her go-to!
I would miss the thumb deck too, which is too bad because I love the idea of a longer hook than the 4-6mm amours are. Thx for the helpful insights. 🧶💜
I generally prefer aluminum shafts too, much smoother!
The Prym hooks come in your choice of either letter sizes or mm sizes
Thank you ❤
I like Pryms
If it was me, I'd take the green hook back and get my money back. Clover...the best.
I like Clover better, pencil grip here. Thanks for the review.
I found my new hooks duo hook from hobbii or Amazon under teamoy for 2mm to 6mm and topincn for .8mm to 2.75 mm. I like clover amour
I love my clovers too and I’m a pencil gripper
I love my clover hooks ❤the best
Love clover
me too!
I've tried a few different ergonomic crochet hooks and I have never found one better that the Amoré hooks. Not even the popular Tulip hooks, I don't like them. So, I just quit looking and use the Amoré.
