- That two very famous actors could have starred in the show? The seminal cult-hit television phenomenon, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, brought horror to the mainstream during its time on the air. It made a star out of its titular protagonist, Buffy, played by Sarah Michell Gellar, and also skyrocketed many of its other cast members to stardom. However, two mainstream Hollywood actors could have starred in the show. Katy Holmes, who starred in Dawson’s Creek, was an early favorite to play the role of Buffy ahead of Sarah Michell Gellar. None other than Ryan Reynolds of Deadpool fame was also in the running to play Xander in the show. Reynolds, however, turned down the role and has been quoted as saying, “I loved that show and I love Joss Whedon, but my biggest concern was that I didn’t want to play a guy in High School.”

Ryan Reynolds would probably like to retract that statement about Joss in light of events since then. I don't think Reynolds would've made for a good Xander. Xander is not supposed to be a sex symbol. That's Angel, that's Riley, that's Spike. When Nicholas Brendan began gaining muscle Joss told him to stop working out and gain some extra pounds. I think Ryan Reynolds dodged a bullet because while Nicholas Bredan was playing Xander, Ryan Reynolds landed some great guest character roles and starred in some movies that helped lead to bigger roles earlier on in his career that would eventually lead him to where he is today.
He would have been great as Riley.
Theres not a lot of actors id say would be on par with the original, but i could defintely see Ryan pulling off Xander really well.

The only criticism I had against Sarah was that she was too short. Otherwise, she was perfect.
I don't know how Katie would have done, but I think she was too passive. I doubt that she could have been convincing as an action hero.
As for Ryan, he would have stolen the show. They would have just renamed it Xander the Vampire Slayer's Best Friend. 😄
I'm glad Nicholas got the part. He was perfect as Xander. A brave "loser" who always tried to make peace.

Zander was perfect he could be the but if the joke or the hero. No other acter could have done what he did people forget that Nicholas Brandon had second billing from the beginning I saw him in wonton want. A forgettable movie except for Nick's acting. You never know if it is real or in his head. Much like Buffy for that matter but the last scene at the kitchen table was inspired Oscar worthy
