I recently decided to revisit Buffy and I've just gotten past the first appearance of Spike. Such a great villain. Magnanimous and cheeky without being overwhelming. And a lot of that is a testament to how good James is.
That’s awesome! I just got to the first appearance of spike on my like 6th or seventh full series watch. Every time I forget that he was supposed to be offed early and forgotten. His performance even from the beginning was amazing. Hence why he was kept around. As a teen I was on angels side for being the one for Buffy and sort of the “better man” but as an 35 year old adult now I see Spike was the better man for her. Spike was a bad guy trying to do good. That’s some loyalty and power if you really think about it. He tried and tried to keep doing good things even though deep down he was a monster. Being older now makes me appreciate the value in someone who keeps trying after all the failures, even catastrophic ones like Spike had. He literally tried to rape buffy and he STILL tried to make it better. Angel is too Edward for me now. I loved him in Angel and liked the love he and Cordelia developed. She was a better fit for him.
Yup. But I didn't like the fact that when he got a soul they diluted his ability to fight as well as he did when he was a baddie. All the other baddies had to do was give him one punch or fling him across the room and he was out for the rest of the fight scene 🙄
His laughter is still amazing! Had the biggest crush on Spike back in those days especially because of his laughter.... And the cheekbones.... And the six pack.... And the head tilts. Best vampire ever! 🤩
Agree 100%. I liked him from his first appearance,he was a handsome vampire and that accent is sexy. He was my favorite character along with Druscilla. Glad Joss kept him on the show.

Warning: spoilers below. I took that remark to mean that Blucas was abbed into love scenes within three episodes of being introduced and had the abs for it already. As I remember it, it wasn't so much that Whedon wanted to play with the idea of Riley (Blucas' character) and then quickly and dismissively write him off the show (he lasted 31 episodes): it was that the fans hated how boy scout pure Riley was (as written). From a narrative standpoint, I think Buffy and Angel as starcrossed lovers who are seemingly perfect for each other (a Slayer burdened by her destiny and a vampire with a soul burdened with the need to make amends for his past) remained so strongly on people's minds even after Angel left. So while it makes some kind of sense that Buffy would get involved with another vampire and it gives Spike a reason for being there and sticking around, it still felt a little weird that it was Spike. It's also why putting Angel and Cordy together didn't feel quite right.

@@Whalewraith True but that means new actors so no certainty of the chemistry, especially as most TV is really poorly written now. “Please don’t Marc Blucas me” 😂 Omg, please have him on, it’ll be so interesting to me, because I actually liked the character and many people don’t have nice things to say about him or his character. So i’d Love to know how he handled that
It's interesting that he said that, because when Blucas had that scene I thought that was exactly the kind of shape I wanted to get into (didn't succeed). Spike was a great character, but I wouldn't want to be that skinny.
(Spoiler Alert) I shipped Briley the most. I liked Angel in the beginning but he just kept finding reasons to not be with Buffy. Like how he said she deserved to be with someone who could take her into the light. She literally doesn't care that much. Them being outside in the sun together really isn't that important. They also can't have sex together, but he LITERALLY BECAME HUMAN in the spin off series Angel, and they were able to have a happy relationship. However, he decides to rewind time so that he doesn't become human so he can keep protecting people. You don't need to be a vampire to protect people. Have you met the character's Gunn, Wesley, Fred, Cordelia, Giles, Willow, RILEY!, etc. And let's come back to the light thing. He literally had a ring that made it possible for him to be able to be in sunlight, so he could take Buffy into the light (like he said) but he destroys it! So I do not ship Bangel. As for Spike, I just never shipped it. Something about it seems off. Spike always treated her horrible, but he didn't have a soul then so I guess it's forgivable. Idk, Spuffy wasn't it. As for Riley, he did have some Jealousy issues about Buffy being stronger than him. He also had that whole bloodletting addiction. However, he voiced how he felt in the end and allowed Buffy a say in the decision for the future of their relationship, instead of running away to L.A. Did I mention how irritating Angel was when he found out Buffy had a new boyfriend, so he decided to beat him up? in conclusion, (out of Spike, Angel, and Riley) Riley was the best guy Buffy ever got with.

This channel was a new find for me today, absolutely love it! Been a fan since of Michael since the Smallville days and this podcast is just as enjoyable. Now the only problem is going back and watch all the stuff I've missed
I do like how Spike was to originally represent evil in the show, because Joss always wanted that essence, but that he put a chip in Spike's head once his character was going to be around a lot longer, and then eventually a soul. Spike's popularity meant he could no longer be an evil presence if he was to be a multi-season character and one of the gang.
To me, Spike and Faith were the best representations of what being good or evil means - a thousand choices made every day, each one part of your own character and each one a chance to be the person you wish you'd had in your own life. A good person shouldn't get a pass when they make bad decisions and a bad person shouldn't have the good decisions they make ignored.
@@kartaan i'd like for him to have remained "evil" or dark in a tolerable ambiguous way, but i guess it was too much to ask for a mainstream show in that era.
@@mbengaful But I think that's how those characters are... Don't you agree that the only way to be evil/dark in an ambiguous way to show the characters making choices to not follow through on those impulses. Too often "good" characters are portrayed as never having dark impulses, at all - and that's just not a reality. Of course all things are not the same and one person's "dark impulse" might be laughable to others. But well-rounded people/characters have, you know, thoughts - determining which of those thoughts are actionable is key - that's how their societal world will judge them as good or evil.
to be honest I hated that chip plot plus I had to wait ALL the way until S7 for it to be removed., It was so hard seeing Spike get his butt kicked all the time.
I watched Dragon Ball Evolution solely because he was Piccolo. Only saw commercials of Dragon Ball Z and never had an interest in watching the show. After 30 I finally did watch Dragon Ball and fell in love. I hope he plays Piccolo again but in a better adaption.
At first, when the love story between Buffy & Spike began I did not like it. That didn’t last long. I thought they were brilliant together, and ended up preferring Spike n Buffy. Incredible show. Great character arch’s for all of the main characters.
Spike was my favorite character after Seth Green left. Spike brought this edge to the show that it needed to add to this darkness that Buffy always had. At times, it leaned too much into the comedy or the romance, and Spike added all those possibilities.

❤️Thanks for your endless love and support you have constantly shown me. I can’t appreciate the unconditional love I have gotten from fans, which for this very reason has got me giving a more sensational entertainment. I’m forever grateful. Where are you watching from?
I'm still amazed at how different his native accent is compared to his Spike accent.
I think the most beautiful chemistry and understanding of love between two characters was Buffy and Spike. Honestly the one to ones they have and the support and trust they eventually have in each other was so wonderful to watch.
I'd love to see Angel and Spike back in a quality mini series.
Too expensive. Vampires don't age. Actors do. De-aging CG would cost a fortune for two actors in a TV show.
@@davidsanders5652 could be a soft reboot. Rather see that than a new Buffy.
@@Whalewraith True but that means new actors so no certainty of the chemistry, especially as most TV is really poorly written now. Plus Buffy was Fox I think, therefore it's now Disney so Angel could still be white but Spike would have to be a black woman... totally new dynamic. I'm sure she would be Angel's former slave, etc, etc..
@@davidsanders5652 pretty sure a new Buffy would be played by a person of colour. I really don't know whats happening to shows these days. Probably why I'm still invested in things that came out a long time ago.
@@Whalewraith I agree.
As a Brit hearing him speak naturally blows my mind.
I met him at comic con recently and even though I knew he's from Texas and he wouldn't have a British accent, it still felt weird hearing him speak in his normal voice.
His accent fooled me for many series. It took a couple of wonky vowel sounds for me to realise he was faking it.
@@theradgegadgie6352 I know what you mean. I occasionally questioned it, but only for a split second.
Yeah James was older than the whole Cast Seriously at that Time! He is a Really good Actor Sincerely He Blew Spike out of Left field with his Portrayal of the Vamp with that Style look Billy Idol!! Anyways Spike of Buffy and Angel is a Classic Natural National Treasure I'm glad He is not Spike I would like to meet Marsters Someday and Ask?! Can you and Angel Just be Friends! IDW Comics actually resumes there Hilarious Odd Couple in the Angel Season 11 - 12 Continued Story Arcs! James is really cool dude I think he might have been Typecast anyways he's Great!! Hoping you can interview Drusilla aka Juliet Landau Someday ?!
Can't believe he's already coming up to 60 years old.
I love how non-creepy and nice/professional this guy seems even with a topic like that
❤️Thanks for your endless love and support you have constantly shown me. I can’t appreciate the unconditional love I have gotten from fans, which for this very reason has got me giving a more sensational entertainment. I’m forever grateful. Where are you watching from?
the song about underage michelle tratchenberg’s feet was really professional
Yeah I just read about that 😕
@@bethsemane69930 I a so disappointed right now. He seemed like such a nice and non creepy guy.
the replies??? people talk like "growth" is not a concept???
I still have a crush on Sarah Michelle Gellar all these years later
I’ve seen him in person 2019 comic con such a nice down to earth guy he’s been my fav actor since I was a kid I even got a great birthday wish from him yesterday so if he sees my comment thank u James
I adored Spike he was absolutely one of if not my favorite character. Very underrated actor and Character
Sure Buffy's cute and all but Alyson Hannigan was the one I was in love with.
Dark willow....mmmmmmmm
@@promnightdumpsterbaby9553 Vampire Willow was hotter, IMO.
@@patrickmccurry1563 “Hands! Hands!”
Yeah, Willow was always more my interest on the show. Buffy was just so traditionally hot girl.
Faith Lehane, oh boy, and Anya Cristina Emmanuella Jenkins (Harris). What can I say, I love a bad girl turning good.
“Please don’t Marc Blucas me” 😂
Omg, please have him on, it’ll be so interesting to me, because I actually liked the character and many people don’t have nice things to say about him or his character.
@@HariSeldon913 Spike looked good with a shirt off I thought
@@kdizzle901 And that's why a forum where people with different opinions can have a civil discussion is great. Imagine how boring things would be if everyone had the same opinion about everything.
@@HariSeldon913 I mean compared to my skinny ass he looked good and Riley looked good and Angel looked good even Xander looked decent not nearly as good as the first 3 but I wish I looked that good lol I mean yea Riley was in the best shape for sure
I really like James refreshing transparency.
I had a crush on Buffy. Who didn't?
I kind of got the idea that S.M.G. thought the same of Marsters as he did of her, her interactions with David B. seem a lot more tender than S.M.G.'s friendship with Marsters. I am only hypothesizing I think S.M.G. liked being the Maria to David B.'s Tony (West Side Story) reference for those who don't know.
@SGilbert im sure it went BOTH ways. Didnt you hear what James said?
James Marsters was a very awesome guest.
“She was like a kid sister to me” Leave it to James to give a heartwarming answer to a creepy question.
Spike and Buffy were incredibly hot together!
It was terrible
@@KiaraWilliamsX dont speak for everyone Spuffy hater. I'm glad they both had trials because perfect relationships are boring. But they both learned from their mistakes thats what matters in the end. I loved Buffy/Angel too but sadly Angel has that curse
That scene where Spike and Buffy fight and have sex at the same time... I was just a teenager and it made my hormones boiling!
It's weird hearing James marsters without the accent
I'm English, so for me it's weird hearing him _with_ an accent!
And still gorgeous to boot with cheek bones that could cut 💎 💜
Who didn't have a crush on Sarah? She was tv's sweetheart at the time..
I had the biggest crush on Allyson, she was so adorable as Willow.
I was watching Season 1 of Smallville Michael, and I gotta say..
The whole Lex pleading with Clark to be honest with him was so heart breaking for two good friends.. Really set up the show.
That show didn't work without you or Tom.
Team Anya.. she was far more interesting ;)
Omg it’s so weird to hear his natural laughter! I love it’s, he’s adorable 🥰
It’s so weird hearing his natural accent when I’m used to hearing him with a British accent in buffy
Right now I’m almost done with Season 4 and it has been great so far.
I can't believe he's not british. I actually just started watching the show and loved it
James calling Sarah his kid sister is so cute
So weird to hear him without an accent.
He's a great guy and great actor he was great on Buffy, Angel and Torchwood...
I can honestly say I had a crush on SMG and Buffy . Yes I know they are different people but Sarah is so cute and such a great person it's kinda hard to tell them apart .
I got to meet James a couple of years ago. Really lovely guy.
Love James, he does the reading for the audiobook version of Dresden Files.
I CRIED SO MUCH IN THE END OF BUFFY, WHEN SHE SAID I LOVE U 2 HIM. LIKE FINALLY. EVERYONE WATCHING THE SHOW COULD TELL SHE FELL FOR HIM. AND I WAS SO DAMN HAPPY THAT LAST SEASON OF ANGEL WHEN HE CAME BACK. IT WAS MY FAVE SEASON BECAUSE OF SPIKE BEING BROUGHT BACK. THAT EPISODE IN SEASON 5 OF BUFFY. I THINK EPISODE 4 WHERE HE WAKES UP FROM THAT FIRST DREAM HE HAD OF HER... HE SAID "OH GOD, NO". REALIZING HE LIKE HER. WAS A GAME CHANGER. I WAS LIKE HE FRICKING LIKE HER. HEY ALL THOSE TIMES SHE KICKED HIS ASS, HE WAS BOUND TO CATCH FEELINGS.
Best character arc in the series.
Put him in a movie! He will make it a blockbuster! Also I always wanted to be as gorgeous as Buffy but yeah if he's that much older I get it.
Gosh, every time I've had the opportunity to meet JM, I've always chickened out because I think he's just so much nicer and cooler than I imagine him to be. I even watched every single episode of Star Trek twice, just so I could have something else besides Spike to talk about if I ever met him. Could never do it.
I agree with everything he said about the show and buffy and spike! I'm glad he thinks that.
I agree with James -- on a professional level. I mean, it ultimately worked really well, but looking at it from before it happened, it would have seemed *stupid* .
what wouldve seemed stupid?
Spike trying and failing to kill Buffy over and over again, would have been an awesome remake of the Roadrunner cartoon.
This channel was a new find for me today, absolutely love it! Been a fan since of Michael since the Smallville days and this podcast is just as enjoyable. Now the only problem is going back and watch all the stuff I've missed
James is the best! Spike is my favorite character.
@@kartaan yes Spike and Faith are my 2 top fav charcters! ANd then Giles

Buffy & Spike were my fav couple. Spike was so hot♥️
Angel was my favourite, but I did prefer Buffy with spike for some reason. Angel was suited more to cordie in the show Angel.
I watched Dragon Ball Evolution solely because he was Piccolo. Only saw commercials of Dragon Ball Z and never had an interest in watching the show. After 30 I finally did watch Dragon Ball and fell in love. I hope he plays Piccolo again but in a better adaption.
underrated actor, great in anything i seen him in...
I think Spike was as iconic as Lex
YES ME TOO
At first, when the love story between Buffy & Spike began I did not like it. That didn’t last long. I thought they were brilliant together, and ended up preferring Spike n Buffy. Incredible show. Great character arch’s for all of the main characters.
Love this guy, and Spike was awesome!
I would so love to meet him. Loved him on Buffy and flash

@@XOChristianaNicole Exactly. I hate it when people twist things to create their own narrative, and then go ahead and believe it 🤦♂️
Maybe because James got in a relationship with a 19yo when the show ended and he was 43 and she later became his wife. Maybe that is why he asks?

Spike with dark hair and an American accent will never be right 😂
" Sarah is like My kid sister" 🥰🥰🥰
Spike was my favorite character after Seth Green left. Spike brought this edge to the show that it needed to add to this darkness that Buffy always had. At times, it leaned too much into the comedy or the romance, and Spike added all those possibilities.
