LBC LONDON BROADCASTING COMPANY First transmission.
(with numerous technical errors re levels and sound gaps etc and hiss levels)
The I.B.A. "encouraged" LBC to change from their compact-cassette players to conventional Cart machines.
London Broadcasting launched at 06.00 on Monday 8.10.1973 exactly as in this recording (which matches my own off air recording).
It was the first UK Independent Local Radio (ILR) station and, because it was to provide news to all the other ILR stations (as Independent Radio News, IRN) it had to go on the air first.
Like Capital Radio, until early 1975, it had to use a temporary frequency (which for LBC was 719 kHz) and omnidirectional transmitter site, which was strung up by the Independent Broadcasting Authority (IBA) between the towers of Lots Road power station. After early 1975, it moved to a permanent directional transmitter site at Saffron Green, next to the A1(M) near Borehamwood, on 1152 kHz (261 m). Its original temporary wavelength (417 m) gave it a good range despite its relatively low effective radiated power (erp). The permanent frequency had a much smaller reach, but covered the intended London area adequately.
Programming was essentially news, chat and phone-ins, 24 hours a day (the first 24 hour station in the UK).
Interestingly, in anticipation of the expected competition from LBC, the BBC started its hourly Radio 4 news bulletins in 1972, along with a selection of Radio 4 jingles at various stages during the day.
Also in 1972, BBC Radio 2 pushed their start time Mondays to Saturdays from 5.30am to 5.00am to try and capture the early breakfast listeners and also to try and look like a 24 hour station, as in 1972 Radio 2 was only off air from 2.02am to 5.00am most days, apart from Sunday.
@@johnking5174fast forward now to 2024 and they dont start broadcasting live until 6am Saturday and Sunday
@@craigr9881 Radio 2 abandoned overnight live presentation some years ago. When they axed the midnight show, there was massive backlash, and as usual with the BBC, they relented and offered a three hour live show hosted mostly by OJ Borg. However from 3am until 6.30am, the Radio 2 schedule is repeats with hourly live news summaries.
Much better then, much slower then with no real media personalities with attitude problems, as off now.
Fabulous upload, and an important slice of radio history in the UK. Thank you for sharing, even if it was a long time ago! 🙂👍Paul.
Cool. Nice to hear this again.
I came here to hear if LBC were still talking about Brexit in 1973 :)
Happy 50th Birthday to LBC!
Thank You.
Please tell me what an off-air recording is?
And was this broadcast on the radio in 1973 or not?
Remember hearing the start of LBC and about a week later the start of Capital Radio. Still prefer the BBC though. Much more varied programming and no bloody annoying commercials.
when is the advertisment for "birds eye frozen food" trying to find it for a school assignment
Love it when the presenter says boxing "is a totally disgusting sport, so keep it brief!"
Totally accurate but somehow you aren't allowed to say that on radio now, since the "sport" has been somehow normalised in the intervening 50 years.
Did I.R.N. start one week later when Capital started?
No. IRN started when LBC went on the air on 8.10.1973, because IRN supplied LBC (and later other independent stations) with their news service. Capital Radio started 8 days later on 15.10.1973.
@@robinparker3540 Yes of course you ae correct. We [Here in The New Forest] had to wait until 1980 for the start of Two Counties Radio] Which was very news based including the 6 minute news reports at 1 and 6 P.M. When did I.R.N.stop providing news fof I.L.R? Also do any smaller I.L.R. stations take the two minute SKY bullitins? Many thanks.
@@garrysimpson1395 I'm sorry, I don't know! If you look up IRN on Wikipedia, it has a complicated history. Regarding Sky, I observe that many stations now seem to take the Sky News.
@@robinparker3540 Many thanks. It is just a pity that so much of Independent Local and National stations is just Angry talk radio now.
Not surprised the early version did not last long going by that. Flat and boring.
Put screen to black and listen to it with no other distractions, imagining it's 1973, and it's good then.
