Churchill Radio Broadcast 14 July 1940
From The Authors Archives; A 72 year old Recording.
July 14, 1940
(BBC Broadcast)
During the last fortnight the British Navy, in addition to blockading what is left of the German Fleet and chasing the Italian Fleet, has had imposed upon it the sad duty of putting effectually out of action for the duration of the war the capital ships of the French Navy. These, under the Armistice terms, signed in the railway coach at Compiegne, would have been placed within the power of Nazi Germany. The transference of these ships to Hitler would have endangered the security of both Great Britain and the United States. We therefore had no choice but to act as we did, and to act forthwith. Our painful task i...

London Broadcasting launched at 06.00 on Monday 8.10.1973 exactly as in this recording (which matches my own off air recording). It was the first UK Independent Local Radio (ILR) station and, because it was to provide news to all the other ILR stations (as Independent Radio News, IRN) it had to go on the air first. Like Capital Radio, until early 1975, it had to use a temporary frequency (which for LBC was 719 kHz) and omnidirectional transmitter site, which was strung up by the Independent Broadcasting Authority (IBA) between the towers of Lots Road power station. After early 1975, it moved to a permanent directional transmitter site at Saffron Green, next to the A1(M) near Borehamwood, on 1152 kHz (261 m). Its original temporary wavelength (417 m) gave it a good range despite its relatively low effective radiated power (erp). The permanent frequency had a much smaller reach, but covered the intended London area adequately. Programming was essentially news, chat and phone-ins, 24 hours a day (the first 24 hour station in the UK). Interestingly, in anticipation of the expected competition from LBC, the BBC started its hourly Radio 4 news bulletins in 1972, along with a selection of Radio 4 jingles at various stages during the day.

Also in 1972, BBC Radio 2 pushed their start time Mondays to Saturdays from 5.30am to 5.00am to try and capture the early breakfast listeners and also to try and look like a 24 hour station, as in 1972 Radio 2 was only off air from 2.02am to 5.00am most days, apart from Sunday.
