Thanks for posting the sound clip.I must have been 18 when I saw the BBC serialisation of Man of Straw on TV (BBC 2?).I don't think I watched all the episodes but it obviously made a big impression on me, to have remembered it all these years.
Thanks for preserving this tantalising fragment of (IMHO) one of the finest TV series ever, with Jacobi at his very best. Every so often, I search the interweb to see if someone - oh please, someone! - has released the series on DVD. It introduced me to the very civilised German practice of the " zweites Frühstück".
I also remember this on Australian ABC TV in the early 1970s. and, like Toranaboy634, it's stayed in my head since then. Also on here as Preussens Gloria. It would be great if it was made available.
I haven't heard that march outside my head since it was broadcast in Australia when I was about 12 years old. It is a truly memorable piece. Thank heavens for the interweb thingie. Now I know what it's called.
Wonderful, So extremely grateful. I had previously practically downloading all of spotify's lot and others but without success. It was the original reason for recording the clip in the first place ! any thanks again.
I would so love to see that series again! It was shown twice in New Zealand, and I've been looking in vain for it in video and DVD stores for many years. Derek Jacobi seemed quite flattered when I told him in 1976 that his Hessling, unlike the one in the novel, was a character one could sympathize with.
I feel that this TV series was remarkable and it should have been made into a classic. Derick JACOBI was at one of his best. If the BBC has a copy, as Mr. REDBURN states, every effort should be made to resurrect it. Please, please try harder to have BBC search their archives. The BBC surely must have realised what a historical gem they had produced. Has Mr. Jacobi been canvassed to see if he has a copy.
The march is called Prussian Glory (Preußens Gloria) and can be found on several RUclips videos. Here for example: I watched all of this series when it was broadcast - it was an important part of my education. I would love to see it again.
I thought this was brilliant when I saw it at the time. The BBC's archive database says it has a copy, but it may just be VHS quality with time code burnt into picture. I am certain they have not tried to release it on DVD. There may also be contractual issues that some of the actors have specified that it cannot be shown again.

Thanks for posting. 1972! Aaaargh! That long ago? Never repeated as far as I know! Seem to remember quite explicit scenes! Scarred me for life!

Me too! I'd even forgotten Jacobi starred in it!

British Film Institute have confirmed they have 6 VHS tapes of the series.

Is it worth writing to the BBC to find out if the series is at least still in their archives? was disappointed it is not available.
RUclips wouldn't let me post the URL but if you do a search within youtube on "Prussian Glory" you'll find several examples.
Is this all that's left?
It all exists at the BBC. The original tapes were donated to the BFI in the 1990's after they were digitised.
