      You might already know this now but as well as a new doctor, there is a new showrunner Steven Moffat, who penned this episode and had written The empty child/The doctor dances two parter, the girl in the fireplace, blink and the silence in the library/forrest of the dead two parter.

      Well done. The best, most reaction-worthy episodes in season 5, imho, are 1, 4, 5, 7, 9, 10, 11, 12 and 13. The others--2, 3, 6 and 8--are not bad, but the ones I listed are essential. You are going to love this season.

    Matt Smith has an incredible skill of encapsulating the ancient age of a Time Lord and the youthful excitement of a child within one person. He's a delight.

    And refer to them by their numbers OR by the actor's name. Either way, we'll know WHO you're referring to, but for ease as the numbers keep adding up, the actor seems to have become the most convenient shorthand in fandom.

    The three-season thing isn't so much a rule, as it is a pattern. It's partially Pat Troughton's fault. He took over from Hartnell as the second incarnation of the Doctor, and over three years was pretty much worked into the ground. After him, Pertwee lasted for five years then Tom Baker for seven. But early after taking the role, Peter Davison, the fifth Doctor, met with Troughton in a parking lot and was advised to go for three years then bail. So, he did. And since then, sometimes by accident but often on purpose it's kind of become this thing. There's no reason why actors necessarily have to move on after three years, but the notion is in place and they tend to hew to it as a model. More or less.

    • @Mrazmatmahmood
      @Mrazmatmahmood 5 лет назад +2

      Yep, it's got kinda annoyingly predicable at this point. I wish at some point we get a Doctor who stays for a longer period of time.

    • @Nigel_A15
      @Nigel_A15 5 лет назад +5

      I read this somewhere and I couldn't find it. I knew it came down to the second Doctor. And Tennant is close to Davison (obviously), so he was certainly done after 3 seasons. Personally I could have dealt with 4-5 seasons of Ten and Eleven, I would have liked to see more of Nine as well but he was supposed to just introduce a new generation to Who and there definitely was no chance of him lasting longer (that's a can of worms).

      Agreed. Somehow, partly by accident and partly by design, the production team on Who in the mid 60s created in my opinion the best single "engine" for telling stories there has ever been. You can change the supporting cast and the show just trundles on. You can change the _star_ and still, on it rolls. Every week you can change the genre, the location and the time period to any place and time in the universe, 'Doctor Who' just takes it all in its stride.

    And, of course, you're right - the show feels entirely different. Moffat's dialogue is certainly a lot faster than RTDs was - perhaps thanks to Moff's background in sitcom writing. The budget's also bigger and there's more of a emphasis on plotting rather than before - in every way it's a new show. You said it was too early to characterise the Doctor for you - I won't say think spoilery, but I think the one phrase that for me sums him up better than any other and it's from that wonderful scene between him and Amy in the Tardis:
    "Amy Pond, there’s something you better understand about me ’cause it’s important. And one day your life may depend on it.
    I am definitely a mad man with a box."

Even the 1960s movie Doctor Who, whom I personally think is the 10th Doctor's doddering old human-hybrid hand-clone after he builds a TARDIS from scratch many decades after being dropped in the Tyler-verse.

      Selina Merritt Totally agree. Mine is Matt Smith, but most of the other doctors have something to offer to the character. I love 10 and 12 as well. (I’m not including Classic Who in this discussion, it would be a blog, lol) Binge watching does heighten the effects, so do take a break if you need one. It’s so hard to lose a doctor and companions too. It’s can get quite emotional. BTW, Doctors can stay as long as they like but 3 is about the average. It’s a had role to play, burn out is a big factor.

    You’re awesome ! Your reaction to End of Time was so emotional, and I had exactly the same kind of feelings going into series 5 / Matt Smith for the first time as you had here.
    What I would say is :
    - It *is* a different show. Take it as a different take on the age old myth of The Doctor. Series 1-4 were Russel T Davies’ take, series 5-10 are Steven Moffat’s. But both those guys were lifelong fans of the show and, both in their own ways, they really GET what Doctor Who is about.
    - Steven Moffat is an amazing writer. While some fans, including me, might prefer the Russel T Davies era a bit more, come on, you gotta hand it to Moffat : he is crazy talented. His episodes form series 1-4 are absolute classics and his era as showrunner is epic, full of bigger-than-life plots and huge emotions. Knowing that you like Sherlock, you’re gonna LOVE it.
    - Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi are AMAZING as the Doctor. While Tennant is my favorite for sentimental reason, I think Smith and Capaldi might actually embody the character even better than him. It is so hard to play a character who can be young (childlike) and old (900 years old) at the same time, but they do it perfectly ! So wise, old, sad, joyful and kind. As The Doctor should always be !

So, this Matt Smith's hand is younger and it's still Tennant's hand proventing him from doing stupid things.

Tennant decided to leave on a high note (Most Doctors, even going all the way back to the second Doctor Patrick Troughton don't last more than 3 seasons... it is not a hard rule but it's exhausting, they get typecast, etc).
