You did a great job. :) I agree, I love this episode. I rank it slightly below The Eleventh Hour as far as Doctors' introductory episodes go but it's still very high on my list.
You really think Matt Smith's story was the best? I thought it started out brilliantly with series 5, but it was a complete mess by S6x08, aka Let's Kill Hitler. There's so many plot holes and unnecessary convolutions, so little of it actually makes sense.
Yeah, lots of great lines/scenes in this one. The entire bedroom scene is gold for instance (and Neve 'Madame Vastra' McIntosh got to briefly use her real accent) as is everything in the alley (fun fact: the tramp in the alley was played by the husband - well widower I guess, sadly - of Lis Sladen, who played Sarah Jane). For some 12 took a while to grow on them but I dug him from the start.
i believe that the reason why the doctor doesn't really have all his memories is because of what happened back in 7x07 when he matt said take all my memories and when he regenerated his mind got a reset and it just takes him a bit longer for all of his memories to return unlike with previous regenerations where he kept his memories.
The initial outline of the concept back in 1966 (the first regeneration) compared the process, for the Doctor, to a VERY bad LSD trip. The post-regeneration trauma is basically a horrific drugs comedown. They still kind of stick to that, even today. You do get that vibe in post-regeneration episodes.
I don't think this is a spoiler, but Jodie is given a great line in her first episode which I think sums up regeneration amazingly well. Shayla - you'll get there eventually to here it!
@Mark Guerrero Pertwee spent some episodes in the hospital trying to rearrange his marbles. Tom Baker had weird stuff going on. Peter Davison went comatose and required a special room in the TARDIS to make it through the process.

What I love the most about Smith's reappearance in this episode is that's it almost like if Matt Smith is breaking the fourth wall and reassuring the fans that they shouldn't cling on to him forever and they should embrace Capaldi as their new Doctor. Which makes sense, cause for a lot of people, Smith was their first doctor. Doctor Who got a major exposure in the United States during Smith's run.

To answer your question on why he doesn't remember things. I theorize it's connected to the regenerations. Think about it when 9 became 10 he had Rose on board and the regeneration wasn't explosive. 10 ended up comatose 10s was explosive cause he was alone. No need to suck in his metaphorical gut. 11 had no major issues. 11 hasd Clara around and didn't destroy his tardis. Memory issues. TL:DR Regeneration is a high energy process that needs an pressure valve. Hold it in you cause stress cracks that have to heal. Let it out and it's literally... The bomb.
It's hard to not fall in love with every New Who Doctor, they are all fantastic. But 12...is THE Doctor. I also love how Moffat knew that the Smith > Capaldi transition was going to be difficult for many, so he wrote in that final part as not only another goodbye for Clara but for us as well.
NOW WE'RE ONTO MY DOCTOR. Season 8 is my favourite. I know it's not the best but I just adore it. LOADS of Character development, beautiful visuals and dark storylines? lovely
SPOILERS I love it. I really got into the production hype, build up and production for s8 so have a particular love for the costumes, scripts, direction etc. I even saw the score performed by an orchestra event. During the Death in Heaven suite they projected scenes from 8x11 8x12 and the little boy next to me was crying and shaking from fear. The "don't cremate me" line is truly the darkest thing I've seen on doctor who and I still can't believe they went there. Also I know KTM is trash but that argument at the ends gives me chills. There's real darkness, conflict, deceit and resolution in this series and it's fucking amazing. (Rant over)
@@Kevin-pq3sq season 5 is fantastic! For some reason I hated Matt Smith when I was younger (probably still upset about 10?) But I've gone back over the years and now appreciate it. S5 is probably the best series like objectively I just love the tonally confused s8 for some reason
When the Doctor asks Clara to see him and she looks at his face it always makes me think of the film Hook with Robin Williams, specifically the line from Pockets. Pockets: "Oh, there you are Peter!"
You have such wonderful reactions. When you laugh, when you cry, it's so genuine. To relive these episodes through your eyes is just, as 9 would say, fantastic :)
It’s nice seeing so many people commenting about how they’re excited for 12. He’s generally I think underrated and I love seeing all the love he’s getting in the comments. It’s puts a smile on my face :)
Also I’m so glad s8 is getting better hype now, i recall it being a little polarizing probably bc of a combination bitterness/mourning period as the first season after Matt left. It’s got so many interesting concepts and Jenna and Peter are legit legendary together
I loved the moment when Clara hangs up the exterior Tardis phone from the previous episode turning out to be the after the Doctor's call to 'Future Clara' - bittersweet. You were so upset & confused by the quickness of Matt's transformation to Peter, now you know how Clara felt going into this episode. That's why it was done this way! Best moment - the Doctor discovering he is Scottish so he can be angry and blame the British! Attack eyebrows
Capadli's run is absolutely one of my favourites. I think his entire arc is a really amazing one from start to finish, and it's one I struggled with at first in Season 8 but it grew on me as it continued and now I can't look back on it without loving it
I have a different obsession with each doctor, & in terms of acting I love 11th's and 12th's. I hope this next adventure with Capaldi's doctor is as fun and enlightening for you as it was for me :) [edit] I believe they did the Matt Smith phone call to help people move on from such heartbreak. So glad you smiled for it.
Those opening credits were actually fan made that the producers found on youtube and decided to make the intro to the show. The homeless man that The Doctor talks to is played by the husband of Elisabeth Sladen a.k.a. Sarah Jane.
"I have mighty eyebrows." Yes, Shayla, you do! I'm glad you know. They are awesome. I always like the way you speed through all your thoughts at the end of the video. For season 7, I think it has some good standalone episodes but there just aren't as many "eventful" episodes as other seasons. Also, I 100% believe you have a theory box.
When this episode aired in the UK they had screenings at the cinema. At the moment where we hear Matt’s voice the audience GASPED and fell deadly silent
Long time fan of the show here, seen up to the fourth doctor (so far, still going) of classic, and all new who. I honestly believe Peter capaldi will forever be my favorite doctor. He's absolutely brilliant. I hope you enjoy what's to come!!! Love these videos and being able to experience someone else's first viewing!
I knew the Matt Smith cameo would be another stab to the heart for you. It was for me. I think they brought him back to remind the audience that, despite the outward change, the Doctor is still the Doctor.
In my opinion, 12 is MY Doctor, for real ♥ I believe his time as the Doctor was the more ground-breaking (and dark, yes, as you can clearly see in this first episode, he has quite a dark personality), but he develops the character of the Doctor A LOT more than previous regenerations, in my opinion at least.
I love seeing you fangirl over Smith! I don't mind the long rambling! Capaldi... He's amazing. I can't wait for this! Fun Fact: Capaldi was actually offered the role back in '94, for the Film that starred Paul McGann, but turned it down because he was afraid of "messing it up". He's been a Whovian since at LEAST The Second Doctor and the oldest Doctor to date, coming after Smith, who was the youngest! I REALLY hope you like him! He's my second favorite Doctor! -"Ren".
Matt Smith was my favourite Doctor right from The Eleventh Hour. My dad brought me up on classic who along side new who as it was coming out so I always found regeneration cool and new doctors always excited me because every doctor brings something new to the table and every doctor is great in their own way and change is the nature of the show, a new Doctor wasn't sad for me it was exciting, I've never been one of those people to get torn up about them leaving because I'm always excited to go on the next new adventure just like the Doctor. For me though 11 will always be my Doctor, funnily enough I was 11 when his first series came on and 9 years later it's still my favourite series of Doctor Who. Matt just seemed to connect with a piece of my soul, there was so much of my energetic geeky self there right down to the flapping hands (I even wanted his hair for a time). And the the Tardis team of 11, Amy and Rory will also always be my favourite. I love Rory too again because I see all my self conciousnes and lack of confidence there and it's so inspiring to to see him grow and be become the brave bold hero. 11 was the confident wild nerd inside me that the people closest to me saw and Rory was the shy guy that showed to everyone else. That being said Peter is great and completely different entirely which is really what makes him so great. So new adventure let's go
When it comes to getting to know a new Doctor, there are two things you should do. Firstly, keep an open mind; they're the character we know and love completely re-imagined! Secondly, ask the question. The first question. The oldest question in the universe, hidden in plain sight. Doctor Who?
The Doctor usually is a pretty static character in that he pretty much doesn’t change much or at all but Twelve I call “The Dynamic Doctor “ because he has an arc through his seasons . The Doctor was not suppose to live on after Eleven so Twelve this season is rediscovering himself and the kind of Doctor and person he is . He doesn’t start off the most likable but you warm to him as he rediscovers his warmth . This was a strong premeire episode , Capaldi owns it and has good chemistry with Jenna Coleman .
Also I just loved this Tardis interior. It's msy favourite, last season they had the same set and design, but it was a bit bare and cold, changing the lights to orange warming it up and adding the bookshelfs and all the other little things that just perfect this Tardis and next season then add one more change that just makes it utterly perfect.
Peter is my 2nd fav doctor next to DT of course. For me Peter embodies the Doctor as a character (i.e. a being inside who has multiple bodies) where as MS was just another regeneration as he was "the man who forgets" - he didn't really carry his past lives with him where as PC deffinatly does. Also Clara is one of my fav companions.
Matt has stated that Patrick Troughton was an inspiration for his take and you can see it but it's subtle IMO. With 12 though they really incorporate previous incarnations (sometimes quite explicitly - 4 is quoted more than once) and i've no doubt that Peter's intense fandom and experience of earlier Doctors really facilitated that (he's the first nuWho Doctor "aware" for the entire history of the show).
@@kivimik Broadly agreed though I think some of what's arguably from 6 could also be from early 1 for instance (and his S8 costume in particular is more 1 than anyone else) so for me 1, 3 and 4 are the primary influences (particularly vocally, more than once Peter C seems to be very consciously referencing Tom Baker).
You'll probably really enjoy the Twelfth Doctor's run if you were a big fan of the storytelling during Eleven's, since it's the same showrunner and lead writer, Moffat.
13:52 Oh if only this was the one time you cry during this Doctors reign... BUT, it's not so get ready... Oh and 15:43 It's Missy, hee hee, can't wait for this plot to play out. Your gonna get strangely hooked on this character.
all the doctors are confused after their regeneration, since Matt spent most of his healing his body and destroying the daleks, meaning his change was almost instant so he had no time to get used to it! Theres also the fact this is the start of a new cycle, and since this happens so rarely they arent any rules about additional confusion!
David Blyth I dare to think that your criticisms of Clara are that of projections of your own personality faults. To call people who like her character as devoid of critical faculties is quite arrogant and disrespectful to the reactors and commenters, and very control freakish I might add, since any one with a different opinion to you must be an idiot and completely wrong, and believing you are the correct one. Your opinion is your own and entitled to express it, just don’t be so rude to people who have other opinions than that of you.
Just when you thought you got past the regeneration...............SURPRISE!!!!!! He got you AGAIN!!!!!!! All in all, a decent introduction to the newest Doctor (for you , anyhow)! ENJOY!!!
Peter Capaldi’s Doctor really goes deeply into the motivations behind why he does what he does and how it affects him emotionally. He has some brilliant speeches about how he would go crazy if he looked back on all the things he’s done. Is he really a good man?
I love the 12th Doctor because he brings back some of the feeling of the classic Doctors... often serious, sometimes a bit dark, but with a humorous side. Very 1st and 3rd with a touch of 4th, to me at least.
You know what I just realized.. Matt Smith said "help him"... To Clara... After Clara said "help him" to the time lords... She had to learn her own lesson.
I love his accent. "Its just a phone call clara." I love love love 12th. He is still clueless but without every girl around him wanting to kiss him so thats so refreshing coming out of the two pretty boys we had(sorry eccleston). Even clara now has new dynamic with the doctor since she no longer fancy him.
I may have mentioned this before but they're all still out there-*9 and Rose, *10 and Rose, *10 and Martha, *10 and Donna, *11 and Amy, *11 with Amy and Rory, *11 and Clara. You just haven't seen/read/experienced all of their adventures yet...
What is really annoying is when your browsing online any you find a spoiler for the next episode of Doctor Who, yet even when i see the spoiler I cry inside, but seeing 11 on the phone with Clara really brought tears out for me.
Notably, with Nine into Ten, and Eleven into Twelve, just the actors were leaving, however with Ten into Eleven, it was a change in showrunner too, which is why there was no characters who stayed around for the transition, it was a fresh start.
Series 8 was good with Peter but series 9 made me fall in love with him. The two-parters gave them more time to tell the story, and Peter Capaldi REALLY gets to show his range as an actor. Plus some killer speeches.
I think Moffett it was really good the only problem I have with him it is too confusing sometimes I think he does a lot of good beginnings but the ending is always not so good from me Season 6 season 9 size those I have no problem with him
@@chuckyfranze289 Hell Bent is a masterpiece and any alternative possibilities for an ending I've heard have been certifiably crap. The Season 6 finale was messy though I'll give you that, but Moffat hadn't worked out how to balance Sherlock and Doctor Who at that point.
The woman in the shop who gave Clara the Doctor's number is brought up in "Deep Breath". The Twelfth Doctor remarks it seems as if someone is trying to bring the Doctor and Clara together. The episode "Death in Heaven" reveals it was the Master (as Missy) who gave the number to Clara.
Editing this was quite difficult. I tried to get as much as I could because all of it was fantastic. Now, the clock is striking Twelve's!

10s was explosive cause he was alone.
The bomb.
Or it's just "however the screenwriters want it this time" ;)
As I said. Theory
@@tycol322 But 11 did explode... he directed it at the Dalek ship
They *did* show David Tennant's face in The Eleventh Hour - then had Smith walk right through it!
"Hello. I'm The Doctor. Basically, run!"
ajivins1 well hello the Delgado master a pleasure to see you here sir
@@quietdemon8138 Pardon?
@@quietdemon8138 I have many names...
It's hard to not fall in love with every New Who Doctor, they are all fantastic.
But 12...is THE Doctor.
I also love how Moffat knew that the Smith > Capaldi transition was going to be difficult for many, so he wrote in that final part as not only another goodbye for Clara but for us as well.
and Matt Smith's regeneration speech is basically his goodbye to the fans, not just Clara.
NOW WE'RE ONTO MY DOCTOR. Season 8 is my favourite. I know it's not the best but I just adore it. LOADS of Character development, beautiful visuals and dark storylines? lovely
I think season 8 is much stronger than season 9. It's actually one of my favourite seasons.
SPOILERS
I love it. (Rant over)
This season is underrated but for me season 5 was the best. Although we all have different favourite seasons
@@Kevin-pq3sq season 5 is fantastic! For some reason I hated Matt Smith when I was younger (probably still upset about 10?) But I've gone back over the years and now appreciate it. S5 is probably the best series like objectively I just love the tonally confused s8 for some reason
Season 10 is my favourite capaldi series...
When the Doctor asks Clara to see him and she looks at his face it always makes me think of the film Hook with Robin Williams, specifically the line from Pockets.
Pockets: "Oh, there you are Peter!"
Ryan , brilliant! Lol
Awe I love that.
That part with Matt was filmed during his final episode; they had to splice the footage in with this episode.
You have such wonderful reactions. When you laugh, when you cry, it's so genuine. To relive these episodes through your eyes is just, as 9 would say, fantastic :)
12 was my Doctor!
Tennant was my hero, Smith was my friend, and Capaldi was my Doctor.
*English ;).
(we Scots are British - well, most of us would claim so anyway - but we're _definitely_ not English)
The mask Peter pulls off in the one scene was a mask of Matt Smith!
My Doctor! I'm so absolutely, fantastically, amazingly excited! You'll love him.
#12FOREVER
Sarah Jane.
It was based on a fan-made title sequence but redone.
I may have a theory box and mighty eyebrows. It's just who I am.
Spot on 👍
The homeless guy in the alley (Brian Miller) was Elizabeth Sladen's (Sarah Jane Smith's) Husband. Fun Fact.
-"Ren".
I think you'll love this season. Ten is my favorite Doctor, but Clara is my favorite companion, and this season is a big part of why that is.
also a few days late, but note how when Matt says "Miss ya" he looks directly into the camera, just think about that for a bit. :)
So new adventure let's go
Welcome to the Capaldi era. This is going to be fun!
you're going to LOVE capaldi's run :D
One of the doctors past companions Romana was also called Fred so names can change
@@anonymes2884 Peter I think has a little of 3 and 4, a dash of 6 and pinch of 7.
In my opinion, Capaldi is one of my favourite Doctors because he is a mix of past doctors before the show came back. And I love that.
You'll probably really enjoy the Twelfth Doctor's run if you were a big fan of the storytelling during Eleven's, since it's the same showrunner and lead writer, Moffat.
The mask 12 wore in the underground scene was a Matt smith mask
The main reason they had the scene with Matt Smith is it just wasn't a plea to Clara to accept the new Doctor but to us the viewer as well.
The specific music of Twelve it is called "A good man?". That is the question. By the way, the music is amazing. Murray Gold is amazing.
13:52 Oh if only this was the one time you cry during this Doctors reign... BUT, it's not so get ready... Oh and 15:43 It's Missy, hee hee, can't wait for this plot to play out. Your gonna get strangely hooked on this character.
"Don't look in that mirror, it's absolutely furious."
all the doctors are confused after their regeneration, since Matt spent most of his healing his body and destroying the daleks, meaning his change was almost instant so he had no time to get used to it! Theres also the fact this is the start of a new cycle, and since this happens so rarely they arent any rules about additional confusion!
Here comes Clara and 12! It's gonna be great. Clara is 12's best companion. Clara as a character blossoms
ENJOY!!!
12 definitely has a character arc throughout his era, which was something I loved. As for Missy...you’ll see.
Peter Capaldi’s Doctor really goes deeply into the motivations behind why he does what he does and how it affects him emotionally. He has some brilliant speeches about how he would go crazy if he looked back on all the things he’s done. Is he really a good man?
Maybe let her see that for herself
Your going to love this. Lol this doctor is.... He gets into heart, but in a different and more shocking way than the others.
My favorite Doctor ! Hooray ! I might have to watch the whole series again alongside your reactions
I liked Peter Capaldi is gets this kind of love from the fans if anyone doesn't know Peter Capaldi is a doctor who fan since he was a kid
Another lovely reaction and heartfelt. I am so glad you are reacting to Episode 4 'Listen' as it is one of my favourites of Nu Who full stop!
As I wrote a while back, Matt Smith is my favorite and Season 5 is still my fave. I love the arc of that season.
that time when your having a lovely day and then The Eleventh Doctor calls to see how you are
I was just like you one year ago i even thinked about stop watching the show but after one season oh my gosh how i love capaldi
I love the 12th Doctor because he brings back some of the feeling of the classic Doctors... often serious, sometimes a bit dark, but with a humorous side. Very 1st and 3rd with a touch of 4th, to me at least.
That is true
The mask he was wearing when he saved Clara was a Matt Smith mask. If you didn't notice.
Many people would say Matt or David is their favourite, but I don’t agree...
Say hello to my favourite Doctor, the 12th Doctor (Peter Capaldi)!
I still can't get over how obvious is was that Missy was an evil future version of Donna. That was quite the shock
"I'll just throw that in the theory box, I don't have a theory box." You just had a Tom Baker moment ^_^
After you catch up with the new series I hope you will try watching the classic series. The classic Doctors are pretty awesome too.
11:30 that's one of those moments when you don't know when to laugh😂 or cry😭
Love how people removed from The Discourse can see how damn good Moffat's era is.
17:15 "Not cool. I mean it was cool"
