Editing this was quite difficult. I tried to get as much as I could because all of it was fantastic. Now, the clock is striking Twelve's!
You did a great job. :) I agree, I love this episode. I rank it slightly below The Eleventh Hour as far as Doctors' introductory episodes go but it's still very high on my list.
You really think Matt Smith's story was the best? I thought it started out brilliantly with series 5, but it was a complete mess by S6x08, aka Let's Kill Hitler. There's so many plot holes and unnecessary convolutions, so little of it actually makes sense.
Yeah, lots of great lines/scenes in this one. The entire bedroom scene is gold for instance (and Neve 'Madame Vastra' McIntosh got to briefly use her real accent) as is everything in the alley (fun fact: the tramp in the alley was played by the husband - well widower I guess, sadly - of Lis Sladen, who played Sarah Jane).
For some 12 took a while to grow on them but I dug him from the start.
"I don't get it."
i believe that the reason why the doctor doesn't really have all his memories is because of what happened back in 7x07 when he matt said take all my memories and when he regenerated his mind got a reset and it just takes him a bit longer for all of his memories to return unlike with previous regenerations where he kept his memories.
Remember when Tennant spent most of his first episode in a coma? Most Doctors react... poorly to Regenerating.
And Eleven's mouth went weird.
The initial outline of the concept back in 1966 (the first regeneration) compared the process, for the Doctor, to a VERY bad LSD trip. The post-regeneration trauma is basically a horrific drugs comedown. They still kind of stick to that, even today. You do get that vibe in post-regeneration episodes.
I don't think this is a spoiler, but Jodie is given a great line in her first episode which I think sums up regeneration amazingly well. Shayla - you'll get there eventually to here it!
The_Judge_ Jodie’s shit and doesn’t count as a doctor. He died in twice upon a time for good.
@Mark Guerrero
Pertwee spent some episodes in the hospital trying to rearrange his marbles. Tom Baker had weird stuff going on. Peter Davison went comatose and required a special room in the TARDIS to make it through the process.
Shayla - "You can't show Matt Smith, it would be like showing David Tennant in the 11th hour"
Me - "They did show David Tennant in the 11th hour and you freaked out back then too 😂"
I FORGOT OMG.
Wait they did ?
@@jadiegotshot7597 yeah its on the roof when the Atraxi show Doctors 1-10 before 11 steps through the viewer and says "Hello, im the Doctor. Basically run."
The homeless man was played by Elizabeth Sladen's husband, really lovely appearance. At this point she had passed away a few years prior so it was really sweet.
In case people do not know, Elisabeth Sladen was Sarah Jane Smith. :)
I didn't know that =O
Awe :,)
Stick with him, some people take a little time to adjust to Peter. He has an arc, and becomes amazing. He is truly a gifted actor.
Yep, 12's arc is fantastic. I didn't really like him at first, but he developed into my favorite.
green31OSU I had just a hard time picking between and 11 and 12, I guess just because they’re so different. I enjoy watching both of them. I had to do a test which I don’t want to mention here because I’m not sure if it’s a spoiler. 11 is still in the top spot, but Peter is so great, a super close second. I enjoy Tennant too, I just prefer a doctor who’s a little more alien.
Absolutely agree. I fell in love with 12 starting with his first Christmas special.
Vanessa McNamara yep best actor to play the doctor for me ... unfortunately his successor doesn’t share the same level of quality
In my opinion, she never will. Tom Baker and Davison are my classic Doctors, and Capaldi and Smith are my new Doctors
"dont look in that mirror. It's absolutely furious." lol.
There are many good quotes in this episode, but this is my favorite.
I personally like “I hate being wrong in public. Everybody forget that happened.”
@@crystald.6902 A good one too.
Another one : Doors, boring, not me.
Hah!
That's just mad isn't it
Season 8 is when Clara grew on me like a fungus. Her chemistry with 12 is phenomenal.
Yeah, the character of Clara really finds her niche with 12, perfectly.
@David Blyth Thats your opinion... and thank you for letting the world know....
David Blyth that was the point of her character though? That’s why her and the doctors chemistry worked so well together
You nailed it.
_Well, it's all right up until the eyebrows. Then it just goes haywire. Look at the eyebrows. These are attack eyebrows._
Hysterical ...
“I’m Scottish I can complain about things!”
;)
Yes Peter Capaldi is Scottish, and they let him keep his accent :-)
Oh, Missy, Missy, Missy. You are in for a rollercoaster of a ride
I think the music in Capaldi's run is the best in the series.
Murray Gold is simply amazing during this time.
Dont be silly Brooks. ALL doctors have amazing music.
I love that they kept the Sad Man In A Box theme. Bill’s TARDIS intro uses it to glorious effect.
did you know that the mask he ripped off was matt smith face because the original mask was damaged
Foreshadowing a bit lol
Yeah, they explained it in Doctor Who Extra that they already had a mold of 11's face for his Old Age makeup and they slapped that on 12. Such a cool and symbolic scene 😅
HAH!
I actually noticed it the first time i saw the episode. I was like "was that matt smith mask? These cheeky bastard."
That Matt Smith cameo at the end really got me the first time. i think it was partly because his regeneration was so abrupt they felt he needed a little more time to say goodbye.
I hope you like Peter Capaldi, because while it may take a few episodes for him to really get going, he was an AMAZING Doctor.
“Next time make one that doesn’t roll”
Literally the next two Sonics are
-Sunglasses
-A squared screwdriver instead of a round one
What I love the most about Smith's reappearance in this episode is that's it almost like if Matt Smith is breaking the fourth wall and reassuring the fans that they shouldn't cling on to him forever and they should embrace Capaldi as their new Doctor. Which makes sense, cause for a lot of people, Smith was their first doctor. Doctor Who got a major exposure in the United States during Smith's run.
Oooo I like that.
Here's to 12's run! Gonna be pretty fun!
Edit: and one more goodbye to 11! Miss ya
takes longer to warm up to him though, wasnt till heaven scent i could appreciate him
I liked him toward the end of series 8 but it did take some time for sure
“Why did I choose this face”
I wonder.
@@JustSoShayla That face is also the face of a roman man who's family the Doctor rescued from the fires of Pompeii.
@@christopherallen3933 She knows
Welcome to the Capaldi era; possibly my favourite of the modern Doctors. One who started off so unsure of himself and his inherent goodness, and ironically became one of the most fiercely kind incarnations.
I adore Capaldi’s run. You’ve got some stellar episodes ahead.
As have you guys. I make it about 18 months before you get here though. Still, time flies like an arrow (and fruit flies like a banana ;).
Anon Ymes bananas are good ... why is there a gas mask kid punching a wall ... oh no
Since 11 was my absolute favorite Doctor, 12 took me quite some time to get on board with. He only gets better as his seasons go on! I am SO GLAD I didn't give up on him!
me too. I remember I had a break from doctor who after matt left, over 2 years! but then when it came on Netflix (uk) I watched it all from the start and decided to give Peter a go, didnt really like him first time, but now he's my second favourite doctor (after matt smith of course)
For me, it's the other way round. Capaldi won me over instantly, but Smith still hasn't.
@@SpectrumStorms Interesting. It's so cool to see how this show affects people differently. 😊
@SpankMeSanta
Funny you should say that, because I'm American. McCoy's my favorite doctor with Colin Baker and Capaldi just behind him.
I think most Whovians that gave Capaldi a chance were glad they did. I certainly was ...
Tennant was my hero, Smith was my friend, and Capaldi was my Doctor.
When the Doctor asks Clara to see him and she looks at his face it always makes me think of the film Hook with Robin Williams, specifically the line from Pockets.
Pockets: "Oh, there you are Peter!"
Ryan , brilliant! Lol
Awe I love that.
That part with Matt was filmed during his final episode; they had to splice the footage in with this episode.
Welcome to my absolute favourite era of the show!
Missy and the Doctor! It's a coming !
This era kinda sucked tbh
@@blueshark7385 there were ups and downs. I'll say that more than half are above average. at least its not as bad as the current era
@@MaDmOnStErQr Flatline and Mummy on the Orient Express were really good, Time Heist and Into the Dalek were decent, Deep Breath was meh, and the rest were utter garbage, and In the Forest of the Night was the most trashy pile of garbage that has ever been put on television
and that tyrannosaurus in deep breath is horrible, why is it that big? It's far too masssive with arms too big compared to its body, too many scales and roaring. This was 2014, we know more about them now
but still nothing is worse than seires 11 fanfiction gone wrong
They *did* show David Tennant's face in The Eleventh Hour - then had Smith walk right through it!
"Hello. I'm The Doctor. Basically, run!"
ajivins1 well hello the Delgado master a pleasure to see you here sir
@@quietdemon8138 Pardon?
@@quietdemon8138 I have many names...
Also I’m so glad s8 is getting better hype now, i recall it being a little polarizing probably bc of a combination bitterness/mourning period as the first season after Matt left. It’s got so many interesting concepts and Jenna and Peter are legit legendary together
Those opening credits were actually fan made that the producers found on youtube and decided to make the intro to the show. The homeless man that The Doctor talks to is played by the husband of Elisabeth Sladen a.k.a. Sarah Jane.
It was based on a fan-made title sequence but redone.
clara and eleven were cute as hell together. but clara and twelve are like actual soul mates. their journey and development together is just absolutely stunning
:)
12 and Clara = one of my favourite Doctor/Companion pairings.
:)
Hooray for Peter Capaldi! My second favourite Doctor after Patrick Troughton (2rd Doctor).
The rubber head he pulls off is actually of Matt, like a butterfly coming out and spreading its wings.
To answer your question on why he doesn't remember things. I theorize it's connected to the regenerations. Think about it when 9 became 10 he had Rose on board and the regeneration wasn't explosive. 10 ended up comatose
10s was explosive cause he was alone. No need to suck in his metaphorical gut. 11 had no major issues.
11 hasd Clara around and didn't destroy his tardis. Memory issues.
TL:DR Regeneration is a high energy process that needs an pressure valve. Hold it in you cause stress cracks that have to heal. Let it out and it's literally... The bomb.
Or it's just "however the screenwriters want it this time" ;)
As I said. Theory
@@tycol322 But 11 did explode... he directed it at the Dalek ship
I still miss Matt, however Peter shines too, Enjoy :D
Ps. Overarching story in last season was fallback to 11th hour, impossible girl and Great intelligence
I really like how Clara is developed better with this Doctor.
@David Blyth trolling through the comments that are positive towards Clara is not a good look bruv
David Blyth insufferable? Lol, lighten up. There is more effort put into her character development this season. Good or bad we learn more about her and she becomes more 3 dimensional.
isaacc7 I agree with you, but I think all aspects of her character were there to see in season 7 already, it’s just people said they didn’t like Clara in season 7 cause she had no character development; how could she have had character development when she had only been with us for half a season?
Love Clara and the doctor though, they’re my faves
Clara didn't really work with eleven because she was basically his rebound girl, like Martha was for ten. for twelve, on the other hand, she was "the first face he ever saw" so the connection was much stronger
@@provisionalhypothesis I dont think anyone is stopping them from speaking, theres just as much Clara-lovers as there are haters. I just think people need to be less aggressive with how they express their opinions as "facts"
I knew the Matt Smith cameo would be another stab to the heart for you. It was for me. I think they brought him back to remind the audience that, despite the outward change, the Doctor is still the Doctor.
I'm so excited! 12 is my absolute favorite. Imho he has the best character development/personal journey of all the new who doctors. Also his relationship with Clara - my favorite duo ever.
Ps. It's Missy time! Yay!
plus Clara gets along with 12 more than Matt, they click better. Matt and Amy and Rory, and Clara and 12.
12 was my Doctor!
The homeless guy in the alley (Brian Miller) was Elizabeth Sladen's (Sarah Jane Smith's) Husband. Fun Fact.
I think you'll love this season. Ten is my favorite Doctor, but Clara is my favorite companion, and this season is a big part of why that is.
Capadli's run is absolutely one of my favourites. I think his entire arc is a really amazing one from start to finish, and it's one I struggled with at first in Season 8 but it grew on me as it continued and now I can't look back on it without loving it
Peter Capaldi’s Doctor really goes deeply into the motivations behind why he does what he does and how it affects him emotionally. He has some brilliant speeches about how he would go crazy if he looked back on all the things he’s done. Is he really a good man?
Maybe let her see that for herself
It’s nice seeing so many people commenting about how they’re excited for 12. He’s generally I think underrated and I love seeing all the love he’s getting in the comments. It’s puts a smile on my face :)
I love the 12th Doctor because he brings back some of the feeling of the classic Doctors... often serious, sometimes a bit dark, but with a humorous side. Very 1st and 3rd with a touch of 4th, to me at least.
That is true
As much as I LOVE Tennant and adore Smith, here comes Capaldi who brings us THE doctor! And Missy, boy! you are in for a whirlwind of speculation and excitement. Looking forward to experience it again through your reactions
Welcome to the Capaldi era. This is going to be fun!
My Doctor! I'm so absolutely, fantastically, amazingly excited! You'll love him.
#12FOREVER
The Doctor usually is a pretty static character in that he pretty much doesn’t change much or at all but Twelve I call “The Dynamic Doctor “ because he has an arc through his seasons .
The Doctor was not suppose to live on after Eleven so Twelve this season is rediscovering himself and the kind of Doctor and person he is . He doesn’t start off the most likable but you warm to him as he rediscovers his warmth .
This was a strong premeire episode , Capaldi owns it and has good chemistry with Jenna Coleman .
NOW WE'RE ONTO MY DOCTOR. Season 8 is my favourite. I know it's not the best but I just adore it. LOADS of Character development, beautiful visuals and dark storylines? lovely
I think season 8 is much stronger than season 9. It's actually one of my favourite seasons.
SPOILERS
I love it. I really got into the production hype, build up and production for s8 so have a particular love for the costumes, scripts, direction etc. I even saw the score performed by an orchestra event. During the Death in Heaven suite they projected scenes from 8x11 8x12 and the little boy next to me was crying and shaking from fear. The "don't cremate me" line is truly the darkest thing I've seen on doctor who and I still can't believe they went there. Also I know KTM is trash but that argument at the ends gives me chills. There's real darkness, conflict, deceit and resolution in this series and it's fucking amazing. (Rant over)
This season is underrated but for me season 5 was the best. Although we all have different favourite seasons
@@Kevin-pq3sq season 5 is fantastic! For some reason I hated Matt Smith when I was younger (probably still upset about 10?) But I've gone back over the years and now appreciate it. S5 is probably the best series like objectively I just love the tonally confused s8 for some reason
Season 10 is my favourite capaldi series...
One of the doctors past companions Romana was also called Fred so names can change
I have a different obsession with each doctor, & in terms of acting I love 11th's and 12th's. I hope this next adventure with Capaldi's doctor is as fun and enlightening for you as it was for me :) [edit] I believe they did the Matt Smith phone call to help people move on from such heartbreak. So glad you smiled for it.
Peter is my 2nd fav doctor next to DT of course. For me Peter embodies the Doctor as a character (i.e. a being inside who has multiple bodies) where as MS was just another regeneration as he was "the man who forgets" - he didn't really carry his past lives with him where as PC deffinatly does. Also Clara is one of my fav companions.
Matt has stated that Patrick Troughton was an inspiration for his take and you can see it but it's subtle IMO. With 12 though they really incorporate previous incarnations (sometimes quite explicitly - 4 is quoted more than once) and i've no doubt that Peter's intense fandom and experience of earlier Doctors really facilitated that (he's the first nuWho Doctor "aware" for the entire history of the show).
@@anonymes2884 Peter I think has a little of 3 and 4, a dash of 6 and pinch of 7.
@@kivimik Broadly agreed though I think some of what's arguably from 6 could also be from early 1 for instance (and his S8 costume in particular is more 1 than anyone else) so for me 1, 3 and 4 are the primary influences (particularly vocally, more than once Peter C seems to be very consciously referencing Tom Baker).
It's very true, I think it's the only TV show that after each new Doctor/Regeneration it's like watching a new programme.
Nearly
You know what I just realized.. Matt Smith said "help him"... To Clara... After Clara said "help him" to the time lords... She had to learn her own lesson.
In my opinion, 12 is MY Doctor, for real ♥ I believe his time as the Doctor was the more ground-breaking (and dark, yes, as you can clearly see in this first episode, he has quite a dark personality), but he develops the character of the Doctor A LOT more than previous regenerations, in my opinion at least.
Spot on 👍
Long time fan of the show here, seen up to the fourth doctor (so far, still going) of classic, and all new who. I honestly believe Peter capaldi will forever be my favorite doctor. He's absolutely brilliant. I hope you enjoy what's to come!!! Love these videos and being able to experience someone else's first viewing!
12 definitely has a character arc throughout his era, which was something I loved. As for Missy...you’ll see.
When it comes to getting to know a new Doctor, there are two things you should do. Firstly, keep an open mind; they're the character we know and love completely re-imagined! Secondly, ask the question. The first question. The oldest question in the universe, hidden in plain sight. Doctor Who?
"I have mighty eyebrows." Yes, Shayla, you do! I'm glad you know. They are awesome.
I always like the way you speed through all your thoughts at the end of the video. For season 7, I think it has some good standalone episodes but there just aren't as many "eventful" episodes as other seasons. Also, I 100% believe you have a theory box.
I may have a theory box and mighty eyebrows. It's just who I am.
That cameo at end, oh boy. It was nice for the transition but mean was it gut wrenching at the time.
09:58 That actor is the husband of the late Elisabeth Sladen ( Sarah Jane Smith )
They brought Matt Smith to talk to the viewers who were mad at that time that their favorite young charming Doctor was replaced by an old dude. And the dialogue was all about telling the fans " i know you're upset, but trust me, i'm still the Doctor, you'll love me too ". It was a nice move toward the fans but it was unfair for Peter Capaldi to have his first episode shadowed by a second goodbye session with Matt Smith ^^'
12 arc is incredible, love this doctor, love all the finals, all the arcs, the next 3 seasons are going to be incredible
Just when you thought you got past the regeneration...............SURPRISE!!!!!! He got you AGAIN!!!!!!! All in all, a decent introduction to the newest Doctor (for you , anyhow)! ENJOY!!!
The specific music of Twelve it is called "A good man?". That is the question. By the way, the music is amazing. Murray Gold is amazing.
In my opinion, Capaldi is one of my favourite Doctors because he is a mix of past doctors before the show came back. And I love that.
Notably, with Nine into Ten, and Eleven into Twelve, just the actors were leaving, however with Ten into Eleven, it was a change in showrunner too, which is why there was no characters who stayed around for the transition, it was a fresh start.
You'll probably really enjoy the Twelfth Doctor's run if you were a big fan of the storytelling during Eleven's, since it's the same showrunner and lead writer, Moffat.
River didn't tell the Doctor that he will meet her again. She told him to say goodbye as if he was going to meet her again, as if there will be more for them. Because, you know, he hates endings. And she probably does too.
that time when your having a lovely day and then The Eleventh Doctor calls to see how you are
11:30 that's one of those moments when you don't know when to laugh😂 or cry😭
When writers change they left no one behind. Russel T Davies left and Matt smith had a fresh beginning. Right now Steven Moffat is still writing so thats why you have your connection.
Here comes Clara and 12! It's gonna be great. Clara is 12's best companion. Clara as a character blossoms
David Blyth I dare to think that your criticisms of Clara are that of projections of your own personality faults.
To call people who like her character as devoid of critical faculties is quite arrogant and disrespectful to the reactors and commenters, and very control freakish I might add, since any one with a different opinion to you must be an idiot and completely wrong, and believing you are the correct one.
Your opinion is your own and entitled to express it, just don’t be so rude to people who have other opinions than that of you.
They brought Matt Smith in to kind of let new fans (that started watching with Eleven) know that it’s okay for the Doctor to change because he’s still the Doctor.
Welcome to my absolute favourite doctor
I loved the moment when Clara hangs up the exterior Tardis phone from the previous episode turning out to be the after the Doctor's call to 'Future Clara' - bittersweet.
You were so upset & confused by the quickness of Matt's transformation to Peter, now you know how Clara felt going into this episode. That's why it was done this way!
Best moment - the Doctor discovering he is Scottish so he can be angry and blame the British! Attack eyebrows
*English ;).
(we Scots are British - well, most of us would claim so anyway - but we're _definitely_ not English)
I think a lot of people were apprehensive about Peter being the 12th Doctor when he was first cast, and it seemed like much more of a jarring change than when 10 changed to 11, I think adding 11 at the end was a way of reassuring the audience that everything was going to be fine. 11 was saying it to Clara, but really he was saying it to the audience. It was very respectful to the fanbase in a way.
The “miss ya” just absolutely slams me all the way to the swimming pool.
I love Missy, she’s behind this season’s narrative arc and she’s AMAZING.
I love his accent. "Its just a phone call clara." I love love love 12th. He is still clueless but without every girl around him wanting to kiss him so thats so refreshing coming out of the two pretty boys we had(sorry eccleston). Even clara now has new dynamic with the doctor since she no longer fancy him.
It's hard to not fall in love with every New Who Doctor, they are all fantastic.
But 12...is THE Doctor.
I also love how Moffat knew that the Smith > Capaldi transition was going to be difficult for many, so he wrote in that final part as not only another goodbye for Clara but for us as well.
and Matt Smith's regeneration speech is basically his goodbye to the fans, not just Clara.
As I wrote a while back, Matt Smith is my favorite and Season 5 is still my fave. I love the arc of that season.
The Twelfth Doctor changes more over his run than Ten of Eleven do. By the end of 2x01 and 11x01 those new Doctors were more-or-less set in their personalities, whereas Twelve's character development lasts for a while.
Ten changes a lot too. Remember "The Waters of Mars" and everything that led up to it?
Get ready for the rollercoasters of Capaldi... You’re going to love it
12 is my favourite Doctor. He has some of the best episodes! Enjoy.
The mask Peter pulls off in the one scene was a mask of Matt Smith!
You have such wonderful reactions. When you laugh, when you cry, it's so genuine. To relive these episodes through your eyes is just, as 9 would say, fantastic :)
Cant wait for 8x4. One of my favourite episodes. So glad these are coming out relatively quickly.
Wonderful reaction, as expected. Glad you enjoyed Capaldi's Doctor. BTW, I highly recommend you react to "Flatline". I believe it's ep9. Tiz my favorite of the series and it would be a blast to see it again with your reaction.
Did Shayla hint at a possible *Classic Who reactions* ? Yeeeesss!
Sounded a bit like that to me too ;). Though there are also a fair few minisodes (plus the '96 movie) that may be on the cards.
;)
you got the correct episode girl in the fire place is the other clockwork robot episode
"Don't look in that mirror, it's absolutely furious."
During death 11 was hallucinating the first face he saw to help him cope with the feeling of dying. Even if he has done this many times it still hurts. Why show matt smith again? Because closure for Clara.
Also even though he regenerates. The doctor is still a VERY old Madman with a Box.
The woman in the shop who gave Clara the Doctor's number is brought up in "Deep Breath". The Twelfth Doctor remarks it seems as if someone is trying to bring the Doctor and Clara together. The episode "Death in Heaven" reveals it was the Master (as Missy) who gave the number to Clara.
When you were waxing eloquent about Matt Smith in your intro I was like, "She's gonna lose it when he shows up..."
Was it completely gratuitous? Yes. Do I care? Not in the slightest. :P
So now you have met my second favorite Doctor. Peter Capaldi has a whole different energy but it really works. He's delightfully grumpy and Scottish. :D
As for who Missy is, well, spoilers.
I honestly could watch a while video of you just ranting and rambling. You discuss and talk about interesting things. Btw not sure if you noticed while watching or while you were editing this, but the face mask that Peter pulled off was the face of Matt. I was anticipating your reacting to that while watching it but not sure if you noticed it. Till the next awesome video! Peace out girl scout!!
P.S forgot to say... Welcome to Missy!!
Best edited out line. Jenny: ... "because I love her, ma'am. "
It took a while for me to warm up to Twelve. But his stories and his relationship with Clara were always amazing. Thank you for this video!
I can't wait to see Heaven Sent/Hell Bent because oh boy the story implications
Heaven sent but not hell bent.
@@Jimmy_Jones Bruh are you mad? Hell Bent is one of the best episodes there is
When this episode aired in the UK they had screenings at the cinema. At the moment where we hear Matt’s voice the audience GASPED and fell deadly silent
I hope you reacted to episodes "mummy in the orient express" and "flatline" both are my fav from 8th season
Flatline is phenomenal and Mummy On The Orient Express is another great episode.. I really liked season 8, although season 9, to me, is the best season of Nu Who.
I know most people do not agree, but I truly love episode 3, Robot Of Sherwood. Huge fan of the story line.
Yep :)
The main reason they had the scene with Matt Smith is it just wasn't a plea to Clara to accept the new Doctor but to us the viewer as well.
