River is such a great character. Her entire time line is so messed up. We met her at her death, then somewhere in the middle, then her parents, then her birth, her growth, after her death, over n over. So damn messed up, in the best possible way.
@@middleeastmusics6570because at the time months before Day Of The Doctor we had no idea The War Doctor existed, he was mainly created due to Christopher Eccleston declining to return for the 50th anniversary so Steven Moffat had to create a bridge incarnation in between 8 and 9 and came up with one who renounced being a doctor to become The Warrior
AlexGlushkov I have head canon that it was during when the Doctor was dying in Let’s Kill Hitler, as she ends up saying “Oh I’m sure she knows...” and stops talking when she notices he’s dead
John Hurt’s appearance was as big a shock on first airing as it was for you. He was persuaded to take the role by his wife. When he got cancer he was too weak to do film, but could do audio plays, so he did twelve episodes of Big Finish which are simply excellent.
River will always be my favorite. There are parts of her story that I felt were told very weakly, but the concept of her entire life and relationship was so novel and mind-boggling that it was inspiring. She's a muse of mine.
There are a couple minisodes with River that would not be spoilers for you. They are called First Night and Last Night, but I don’t think you can get it anywhere but on the box set. Looking forward to the next ones. I’m glad you love River. One of my favorites!
eleven please see my other two replies. The box set dvds have them, I know that for sure. I’m not sure you can find them anywhere else. I hope that helps.
Perfect ending for a tremendous season! Absolutely loved your reaction, and I could hardly wait to see it! :) one of my favorite parts of this episode was when they showed all the Doctors. The ending was a whopping shocker, but it was a very good one. :-)
@David Blyth that's okay. I seem to like things that are thought of as horrible. It's just my opinion. If everybody liked the same things in the world, it would be a very boring place. Have a good rest of the weekend. :-)
I honestly feel that the opening was a bad choice for this episode. It removed the entire mystery immediately(at least for me) and made the end of the episode very obvious(that she'd jump in).
The John Hurt appearance was the best part of the episode. An interesting twist on the Doctor that leaves us wanting more. I love the schedule of your next few Who reactions. Excited to check them all out,
There's a classic 4th Doctor episode called City of Death in which the doctor travels through various times and encounters the same villian stuck in different eras. An accident "splinters" the character in multiple pieces and scatters him through time. You can bet Stephen Moffat took note and it is the inspiration for this arc.
SURPRIIIISE!!! :D I have no idea how they managed to keep that plot twist a secret, but they did. You can imagine the amount of freaking out that went on after this episode aired. On to the 50th!
Great stuff! Love the revelation of Clara as the impossible girl. I actually love The Crimson Horror, I don't know if others do but the whole thing so cool and different and the mother/daughter duo is wonderful to watch. Both those actresses killed it. Very excited for the next couple of days and you reactions.
I....I'm quite speechless, actually. Seeing you so excited makes me infinitely more excited as well! I cannot even articulate how much I am looking forward to this next week. Some of the best Doctor Who I've ever seen. It'll take you on a journey, and I wish you all the best and, well, the best of luck! What else to say but "Geronimo"?
This was a great episode. Probably my favorite thing that Moffat introduced into the canon of Doctor Who is the idea of The Doctor being an aspiration. He chose the name as a promise and an ideal to live up to. And I love that so much.
Ah! This episode through all the 50th anniversary stuff and Time of the Doctor is my favorite stretch of content. So excited you've gotten to this point! 💙💙
This really is the best Doctor who reaction channel. I have loved watching Shayla become such a big fan of who. Its always fun to re watch an episode through someone else
Great lineup for the upcoming reactions! Cant wait to see them! I really LOVE your reactions to River, she will always have a special place in my heart. Keep up the great work you have so many more great reactions to come! Till the next episode! Peace out girl scout!!
Your face when this episode ended was the same as all of us lol. I'm glad you're doing An adventure in Space and Time too, David Bradley was great in it.
To give you some info: classic who contains doctors 1-8. New who contains doctor 9-13 (and the war doctor, John hurt) John hurt was in between 8 and 9 but introduced in this episode.
Some really great little clips of the past Doctors in this. And the first time we've ever seen the moment the Doctor left Gallifrey back in the Beginning. And the Introduction of John Hurt as The War Doctor.
You may get completely different opinions from everyone else but here is a suggested list of stories to look for to give you a broad overview of each doctor. For the first Doctor, William Hartnell, I would suggest Dalek invasion of Earth. For the second doctor, Patrick troughton, Tomb of the Cybermen. For the Third Doctor, Jon Pertwee, Terror of the autons, which incidentally is the first appearance of the master. For the fourth doctor, Tom Baker, pyramids of Mars, which includes Sarah Jane Smith who you will remember from school reunions. For the fifth doctor, Peter Davidson, the caves of androzani. For the sixth doctor, Colin Baker, Vengeance on varos. For the 7th doctor, Sylvester McCoy, remembrance of the Daleks.
I joined watching these reactions a little while ago but haven't commented yet. I just wanted to say how much I'm enjoying them! I'm an old Whovian who has long enjoyed the show and watched them all from the beginning in Nov '63 'til last New Year's special Se11Ep11. Yeah, I really love the show. But watching you react is like watching the episode again for the first time; the things you say and feel are pretty much the way I reacted when I saw them the first time, too. I may not make a lot of comments, but I'll be watching and I wanted to say really enjoy your work.
John Hurt's War Doctor was originally going to be Christopher Eccelstons' incarnation of the character. so all the stuff in the upcoming episodes with him, should be the 9th Doc's
@Matthew McIntyre And if it had been Eccleston then the continuity would have been screwed as the Doctor is portrayed as being newly regenerated in Rose--when he looks in a mirror while Rose is making coffee his comments indicate that very clearly. The simplest solution, continuity-wise, would have been to write a Time War story featuring the 8th Doctor but apparently McGann was not thought to be a big enough 'name' so they went eventually settled on the story and cast that we saw.
The daughter in the Crimson Horror is actually Diana Rigg's real daughter. They are also together in a beautiful BBC show called "Detectorists" which is a little known gem of a show.
The mysteries of the impossible girl are revealed. Love the call backs to classic Who in this episode and the reveal of the late Sir John Hurt to actually do some justice to the story of the Time War after 7 seasons of talking around the subject.
For "The Night Of The Doctor" , as the Doctor will say himself, it's not the one you're expecting! Also recommended is the 1996 made-for-TV movie "Doctor Who", which was intended to reboot the series at that time.
“You know what these are? The wrong hands!” I love that episode. As a side note I always found it funny with all the steampunk technology and Babbage like computers, one of the main characters was named Ada. I’ve always assumed that was intentional. Ada Lovelace (Who makes an appearance in a later season) was the first computer programmer and lived around that time. Although Charles Babbage never completed his computers, she was able to demonstrate what they were capable of.
The concept of someone being "fractured through time," like what happened to Clara, was used in Classic Who as well - but in that case, it was part of a plot to steal the Mona Lisa (well, six Mona Lisas).
More from a Whostorian: The woman entering the Tardis with Doctor #1 at the beginning of the episode is Susan , The Doctor's granddaughter. She was his first companion as we see. He is 450 by the time of a 2nd Doctor episode where he mtions his age.
One of my favourite things about this episode is the sense of fun on show in "And Introducing..." before the name "John Hurt", who at that point had been acting for over 50 years - but hey, he's new to Who, right ? ;-). And I love the TARDIS tomb and the Doctor's space-time worldline being his tombstone. Nothing seems more fitting for arguably the universe's most complicated space-time event.
Interesting fact: John Hurt's War Doctor was a last minute retcon, because the end of Name of the Doctor was supposed to feature the return of Christopher Eccleston as the Ninth Doctor, but due to Eccleston choosing not to return, they chose to get John Hurt to play a new character to take over for what was supposed to be Eccleston's storyline in The 50th anniversary special.
It wasn't really last minute, because Moffat surely knew that Eccleston would be hesitant to return. He wrote the part for him, true, but it was clear that getting him back would be a hard sell.
Oh shit here we go! 😍😁🥰 I’d forgot Miss Emma Peel was in the Crimson Horror episode. So many good episodes and minisodes and Docudramas to come before my birthday on the 28th, a great way to to count down the days.
Ok so you’re getting to the 50th anniversary time period where Doctor Who was very much the talk of world. It was like all the hype around the force awakens. Special promos, special trailers, news interviews, one off documentaries, specials shows etc. it was a year of great hype all culminating in the 50th anniversary special and the Christmas specials.
Flaw in this episode: The man in the control room at the start shouldn't have called the time machine a Tardis. That name was coined by Susan after she and the First Doctor ran away. Great reaction, looking forward to the next two.
@Matthew McIntyre All these conversations took place AFTER 1 & Susan's departure, which means the name caught on. If I'm Quixotic, then Susan is my Dulcinea and I'll support her honor with my last breath. :)
If you’d like a basic dip into the pool of previous Doctors and all that came with it, RUclips still has available, “Doctor Who - the ultimate guide full documentary” . Full disclosure: it’s over 2 hours and has a smaller screen space with inferior sound but that’s put there to avoid any copyright infringement. You’ll at least get a bit of familiarity with all that came before the 2005 reboot. That’s IF you want to get some backstory before surging ahead into all the 50th anniversary fun.
Absolutely. I read that, to him, the most important thing about being cast was that it would mean he would be known as being "Doctor Who." He was so delighted just to be able to _be_ the Doctor. That puts a lot of things in perpective, when I think about it. Here's this guy, a Hollywood legend, and he doesn't care about the story, the script or anything else. All he cared about was "will I be able to call myself the Doctor? If I'm going to be the Doctor I'll do it!"
Had to delete my comment because someone replied with spoilers but I really enjoyed this reaction. :) You're the best, Shayla. Thank you for all your content. So excited for next week!
The late John Hurt, who played the doctor in one of his last roles. By the time you read this you’ve seen Day. I can’t wait to see your reaction to that. Oh, River...post library! That was awesome. If you want a quick look at the classic doctors watch RUclips’s Babelcolour’s tributes to each doctor, they will give you a great insight into each doctor. Before you go too much farther please watch the classic episode “Genesis of the Daleks” as it will be very helpful to a future episode. Could someone close please reboot Shayla? I think she crashed when she saw John Hurt.
Hah!

Why was John Hurt being the war doctor was so shocking? I'm too young to know lol

@Just Jay is it the 50th?
The moment the Doctor told River his name for real was off screen. I think I can say that, so that you wouldn't wait for that.
AlexGlushkov I have head canon that it was during when the Doctor was dying in Let’s Kill Hitler, as she ends up saying “Oh I’m sure she knows...” and stops talking when she notices he’s dead
Wayne Sasuta my head canon is that she first reads it on the side of the Doctors cot in a good man goes to war
ObiWan, that’s another strong possibility
Wasn't it in the season 6 Finale, The Wedding of River Song, at the ceremony, right before rebooting time (again).
Doug Cowell nah that’s when he says “look into my eye” but lies about it
That wasn't just Diana Rigg, but her actual daughter playing her daughter as well.
Nice.
Oh cool!
John Hurt’s appearance was as big a shock on first airing as it was for you. He was persuaded to take the role by his wife. When he got cancer he was too weak to do film, but could do audio plays, so he did twelve episodes of Big Finish which are simply excellent.

Mikko Kivisto Yes, I forgot about that one. I’m pretty sure you can find that one on RUclips. I don’t think it’s on Amazon.

eleven please see my other two replies. The box set dvds have them, I know that for sure. I’m not sure you can find them anywhere else. I hope that helps.
The Paternoster gang are great ( Vastra, Jenny and strax)

The late John Hurt, who played the doctor in one of his last roles. By the time you read this you’ve seen Day. I can’t wait to see your reaction to that. Oh, River...post library! That was awesome. If you want a quick look at the classic doctors watch RUclips’s Babelcolour’s tributes to each doctor, they will give you a great insight into each doctor. Before you go too much farther please watch the classic episode “Genesis of the Daleks” as it will be very helpful to a future episode. EDIT - here’s a link to babelcolours tribute to the second doctor ruclips.net/video/1Xm26StUZVY/видео.html
There's apparently a comic or book that has clara meet one of her "Shards".
