    I love how poetic the conclusion to Clara's "Impossible Girl" storyline. The Doctor treats her like a mystery, an object, rather than an actual human being, despite being constantly proven wrong and called out on it (seeing Clara's past, "she's an ordinary girl", "I'm not a ghost", "I don't know what you're talking about", etc), and, since we see the story from his viewpoint, we see her the same way and ignore all the clues to the contrary. She's just too good to be true, the perfect companion. On the first glance that is. I won't go into Clara's personality now, but it's a great topic to discuss later on, in view of all the "she has no personality" criticisms. But in this episode, Clara starts to believe this narrative as well - "I was born to save the Doctor" - and is consequently proven wrong, just like the Doctor so many times in earlier episodes: she doesn't die in the time stream because her life doesn't revolve around the Doctor. She's created her echoes, made the ultimate sacrifice out of her own free will, and her reward is to live, be herself, not just a replacement or a mystery. It's very poetic and, simply put, beautiful writing.

    Moffat is known for comedy before DW, but no one has made me cry as much as him, when he pours on the feels.
    * The Girl in the Fireplace
    * Silence in the Library + Forest of the Dead
    * The Beast Below
    * The Pandorica Opens + The Big Bang
    * A Good Man Goes to War
    * The Wedding of River Song
    * The Angels Take Manhattan
    * The Snowmen
    * The Name of the Doctor
    * The Day of the Doctor
    * The Time of the Doctor
    * The Husbands of River Song
    All of these (written by him), and probably others have scenes that tug very hard on our heartstrings.
    It takes a lot of smarts to come-up with comedy that works. These episodes show us what he can do when he wants to make us sad.

    One of the HUGE moments in this episode is that we see the first ever footage of the Doctor from a time *before* he began his adventures in "An Unearthly Child" in 1963. We get to see the very moment that he actually stole the TARDIS with Susan, and it even answered one of the age-old fan questions... what does a TARDIS look like when the Chameleon Circuit is shut off and it's in it's natural state? (This was, of course, before it broke and got stuck as a Police Box, also in "An Unearthly Child".) A great way to kick off the Fiftieth Anniversary!

      If you ever listen to the Big Finish story The Beginning, you actually hear this exact moment from Susan's point of view. Steven Moffat actually communicated with Big Finish regarding the fact that the Doctor talks to "someone" before stealing another TARDIS. Susan never learns that it was one of the Claras and, confused, is escorted by her grandfather to the other TARDIS. It's woven in very well.

    20:02 I wonder if the reason Clara knew which Tardis was the Doctor's was because the Tardis knew HER? Remember, we know that the Tardis is conscious and that she has trouble with tenses; odds are good that the Tardis recognized Clara, and even that the two of them formed a plan to get the Doctor into his Tardis. This is my new favorite headcanon: that Clara didn't pick the Tardis for the Doctor, but that the Tardis had a major role to play in it as well.

    • @themasterofterriblecgi5498
      @themasterofterriblecgi5498 2 года назад +3

      That also makes sense with the line in the Doctor's Wife when Idris/the Tardis tells the doctor she chose him, not the other way around. There should be a whole short story about the interactions between Clara and the TARDIS that lead up to that moment.

      Long before this episode, I always had pictured the Ninth Doctor as the PTSD regeneration, having gone through so much in the Time War that it took him a whole regeneration to work through the trauma of what had happened and he’d been forced to do. The repressed regeneration actually makes more sense, and it is just a crying shame that John Hurt is no longer with us to flesh out some more of his part in the Time War. Can but hold out hope that McGann is given a chance to do so for his part in the run up to his regeneration

      I have an advise about what to watch before "The Time of the Doctor. It would be wonderful if she rewatch "The Wedding of River Song" (6th Season finale), specially Dorium Maldovar speechs, at 10;00-11:31 and 44:00-end. In these parts, Dorium speaks about the prophecies concerning the "fall of the eleven" and it is very interesting to see how they are fulfilled.

    And as usual the finale hits all the all right emotional spots. I enjoyed it even more this time round. And I adored the looks of bafflement and wonder and love in the reaction - especially when they were showing those wee references and clips that can't really mean quite as much to New Whovians as they do to old farts like me who were there in the beginning. Thank you again for the reactions and for the chance to relive albeit vicariously the first time round.

    I finally crumbled and invested in your Patreon to watch the full-length version of this, synced-up with the episode. I really enjoyed it, and I'm so pleased you liked it and were satisfied with how the multiple Claras all tied up. I can't wait for your reaction to the 50th.
    Obviously some of the value of the cliffhanger depends on how big a star you consider John Hurt to be, I suspect... In the UK probably much more so than the US, perhaps?

    • @blueboxman5517
      @blueboxman5517 7 лет назад +1

      Paul Hayes I think it's a shame that audiences here in the U.S. generally only knew John Hurt from a few roles, such as Kane in Alien & Joseph Merrick in The Elephant Man. He had so many other great roles in film & TV that American audiences aren't familiar with. And what a great voice..."like honey & acid".

  • @Nairat
    @Nairat 6 лет назад +3

    I liked John Hurt being the War Doctor, even if it messed up with the amount of lives the Doctor has lived. It would've been interesting with Christopher Eccleston as the War Doctor, but then it wouldn't have had as much effect of keeping him a secret if we already knew him.
    The way I see it, is like this:
    War Doctor (John): War Veteran, tired and battle-weary. Wants things to end and having lost his sense of self, who he is.
    9th Doctor (Chris): War Veteran, trying to find himself again, trying to be who he was. The Doctor. But still, there's that anger and tiredness of war still residing in him that hasn't faded.
    10th Doctor (David): The one who regrets. Having come to terms with what he's done, he accepts what has happened and is coping with everything, trying to move on, but still has his dark moments.
    11th Doctor (Matt): The one who forgets. He's let go of his past, focusing on the present, moving forward, and more concerned with what is to come, like his own death and the death of those he cares about who he has left.
    12th Doctor (Peter): The old man, tired of living for others, but too kind to let go. The one whose past has come back around to haunt him again and again, and the long term effects on his psyche from everything.

    The problem I had with Clara this season is that the whole "Impossible Girl" arc made her out to be this enigma rather than a true legit companion, which for me at-least got in the way of her character. For that reason, this finale really helped me with her in that the sole purpose of her appearing across all his faces is trying to save him. Quite touching :)

    • @Kasino80
      @Kasino80 7 лет назад +1

      Patrick Fisher which is where I lost any interest in the character. After the impossible girl story arc she was incredibly boring.

    • @Kasino80
      @Kasino80 7 лет назад +1

      fancynancypigs no, I liked both Donna and Rose and Martha, but Clara was just incredibly annoying from the get go, and once the impossible girl was done, annoying was the only thing left. She overstayed her welcome and Moffat didn't have the faintest idea what to do with her. The Danny Pink story line was completely out of left field and was botched from the beginning.

    That was such a shocking ending - for a start I was a big John Hurt fan, but I hadn't heard that he'd be in the 50th special, so I really wasn't expecting to see him at all. That and the screen caption really made this standout. As for working out who the figure that Clara didn't recongise might have been? I think I may have gone through the Valeyard and then the Dream Lord before I realised it must have been the one who pushed the button on the Time Lords.
